Our lease on this one is almost up, wondering if we have any equity in it as a trade or best to just turn it in.

Hey y'all. I'm dying to get a new Focus but i'm afraid they'll laugh at me when I try to trade in my old one!

    Ft. Myers, FL
    2000 Ford Focus ZX3
    3dr
    Automatic, 2.0 L Ztec
    88000 miles
    Bright Malibu Blue
    Power Moonroof
Brakes are brand new, maybe 2 months old
2 new tires, about 2 months old, other 2 close to needing replacement.
The interior is in very good shape, nothing besides a few scratches around the A/C knobs. The A/C blows warm air and one of the power levels doesn't work.
The exterior has some problems. The roof is dull. Each side has some scratches from being keyed, but aren't too noticable. One centercap is missing. The front bumper has a crack by the foglight. The paint on the hood is peeling terribly and there are large rust spots. The rust isn't deep or flaking off.

So, I don't know if I should take it straight to the dealer to trade it in or cheaply paint the hood so it looks more presentable. I'd be happy if I got what I owe on it, which is about $2600. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Oh, I forgot to mention that it has been in two accidents. One front passenger side before I owned the car, and one to the rear. The rear damage wasn't bad and has been fixed.

    Indeed.

If I did all of the things he does for people on here and still had to put with the abuse that some posters, they know who they are, give sales people then I would just leave and not even bother.

But he proabably has a thicker skin then me.

    Terry or others,

I need a private party value for a 99 Chevy Prizm Sedan in Columbus, Ohio
    VIN 1Y1SK5282WZ439400
    122,000 miles
    4 cyl automatic
    Dark green exterior, gray interior.
Air bags; ABS; Cruise control; Power locks and windows.
    New tires and fuel pump.
Dent on rear bumper and cracked windshield.
Check engine light on, probably due to DPFE sensor.
    Otherwise a nice car.

I would appreciate any help with this one.

    Hey guys,

Missed out on the 2000 Dakota, but not too sad as I wasn't thrilled with the manual trans (in case wife need truck). I did however find a '96 that seems to fit the bill. Went and looked at it during lunch. They had just gotten it the day before. Here's the specs

    '96 Dakota SLT Club Cab v-6, 2-wd
Auto, 74.6 k miles, Green, Pwr Windows, locks, am/fm/cass, bedliner.
There's a major ding in the passenger side fender that encroches on the hood, but the hood opens and closes freely. The hood looks like someone was tap dancing on it and there are assorted dings along both sides. The drivers door has a rust spot on the bottom. The tires are hwy tires and would need to be changed in a few months. Otherwise, the paint looks fine and the interior could use a cleaning. Started right up and didn't hear any tapping (didn't get a chance to check fluids, climb under car, etc..)

The asking price was 3695. Hoping to do something by next week as my wife is starting to get annoyed with me hauling chainsaws, etc in our nice S70.

    Thanks,

    Peeter

There is likely no equity in your Odyssey inasmuch as a new '06 EX can be bought for less than $26,000.

Can't hurt to shop it though.

Terry, or steine, here's one and a half for ya...

Looking at possibly trading into a Subaru, as my automotive wanderlust strikes again...

What's it worth... in Wilmington, NC
2002 Honda Accord EX V6 Coupe
    yes, that's the V6/automatic...
    62000 miles (they're all mine)
gold exterior, tan leather interior, all the EX goodies
exterior is free of dents/dings/scratches, but rear bumper cover has been replaced and some minor work done to driver's door, in separate incidents.
interior is clean, leather looks good but perhaps aging a little fast
tires have 60-70% of the tread life remaining, brakes at least 80%
all scheduled maintenance completed per "severe" intervals in the Honda manual

Now for the fun part... whether it's a midlife crisis is a separate discussion, but I saw this one at a dealer (not Subie, mind you) and wonder what they're smokin... dare to enlighten me on the retail side and/or how much $$ he has in it?
    2004 Subaru Impreza WRX wagon
    5-speed
    55000 miles
    silver with black cloth interior
There are no options on Subies.
Looks good inside and out, nice deep rubber on the Fuzion HR1's. Brakes and maintenance a question mark until I have someone have a look-see.
He's asking $19,995 but other than Edmunds sayin a certified is worth $19,0 nothin else shows me more than $18,5 retail. What does he have in it, and should I hit him above or below $18k?

Thanx in advance on both ends...

A new post-doc has arrived at our lab... he's from Charleston, WV, with stops at Vanderbilt and Berkeley... and he's got this truck.

It's a 1999 Toyota Tacoma XCab SR5 TRD pickup truck.
    V6 5sp manual 4x4.
The color is maroon, but it's called "burgandy" -- with an "a" -- in automotive circles.
Power locks & windows, no remote, no roof.

There ain't a spot of rust on it, it's not been smoked in, it's in really nice shape. Good tires, engine looks clean, 3k oil changes, the works. One owner.

These things bring stupid money anywhere.

    But here's the kicker.
    It has forty-four thousand miles.
There were twenty to thirty '99 V6 Tacos SR5 4x4 (TRD or not) at Manheim auctions last month, and the lowest mileage of any of these was in the 60s.... the highest was 240k, and the darned thing still pulled nearly $5.

After all this gushing, here comes the rub:
It has some light body damage... the hood is a little askew, the bumper pushed in no more than 1" on the passenger side, and the front qpanel on that side is slightly pushed out, with the wheel arch molding coming unglued at the front.

None of this is really noticable until you look for it, then it's obvious... it's no big deal, but done properly, it's $2,300 per the estimate he got today. Since the accident was his fault, he's already gotten dinged for it, and I'm thinking just have it done on the insurance nickel.

Now, how is he going to sell this thing? If it weren't for the paint work, he "should" see mid $13s and maybe $14 on this thing, 'cuz the 60k trucks are doing $12 at the auctions. These Tacos are nuts; the truck cost $23 new.
Used with low miles, you can't find them.

On the other hand, in the local market, imports don't exactly rule the roost, and 5speeds aren't all that popular. My advice is ebay and tap into the Chicago market that way... What do you guys think?

Take any real cash offer over $1,000, probably will see around $1500 in it current condition.

If everything were fixed, bumper, windshield, all repairs completed and maintenance up to date, along with a super detail, you could expect to see around $2,900 private party with a pretty quick and easy sale. You might be able to see a bit more once the car were fixed up as gas prices continue to rise.

$2,900 value less -windshield $250-bumper cover and repaint $500-check engine light repair $unknown and up to $700-unappeal factor due to the poor condition $priceless.

You have to face the fact that the cracked windshield and dented bumper are potential safety violations and the check engine light is an obvious emissions check violation.

The last one of those we took in a few months ago was identical to your turck but had 98,000 miles on it. It had a little bit of body damage but was on the rear bumber and tailgate.

We gave the guy 10,000 for it I think so yeah they bring stupid money. If you know imports and 5 speeds are weak in your area then I agree go for ebay but put it out for sale localy as well. It might bring a little bit less selling localy but a few hundred dollars less might not be worth the hassel of ebay.

    Hi everyone.

I currenly have a 1996 Toyota Camry (4 door sedan) that I would like to sell. Could you give me your opinions on what a fair asking price would be? I went on kbb.com and did a private party estimate and it gave me $3500.

It has 112,000 miles on it.
It is a four banger (haha, I learned that phrase here!) ;)
    All power
    remote start
    CD player
    cruise control
It is in immaculate condition inside
and the outside is in perfect condition.
It looks brand new, in and out.
    gold exterior, tan interior
Newish tires and brakes, all mainenance done
    It runs good too.
    I live in Dover, DE

What would you expect to see this car sell for?

    Thank you!!

He can get it fixed by his insurance co., minus the deductible, is that right? That would seem like a no-brainer (to me).

I second the fee-bay idea. Just spend a lot of time on the pics, constructing the listing, figuring out the reserve (if any), the BIN price (if any), etc. etc. etc. Of course, it's possible to wind up with a dead-beat Non Paying Bidder who wins the auction, but there are ways to try & avoid that--& even if that happens, you haven't lost much.

Well maintained, tires 50%, front brakes 50%, rear brakes are new, alternator is new, plugs and wires just replaced.
It will clean up nice for its age.

Please let me know what you think the private party value is. Edmunds TMV for clean condition says $5600, while KBB says $7300. Why is there such a difference and which pricing service tends to be more reliable?

    Thanks a lot!
  • british_roverbritish_rover Member Posts: 8,502
Man we got busy here it must be a miracle.

Ok so in Boston you are probably but not Definitely going to be hit with straight Galves so...

Straight Galves with mileage deduction since it should have about 53,000 miles not almost 73,000 is about 9,600 dollars. With fresh tires and brakes and a very clean car maybe someone would stretch to just over 10,000 but with gas the way it is now I doubt it.

Now about my tea I happen to like tea both hot and cold. I don't like coffee and never have. I will sometimes have it but I put a ton of cream and sugar in when I do. Coffee just does not agree with me. I get into my office in the morning and have a cup of English Breakfast tea with a little cream and a little sugar. On cold mornings I will have two cups.

Cross-posted in case the experts in here aren't in Purchasing Used Vehicles...

Pulled the carfax on that WRX that I looked at the other day, and found this as the first title record:

    12/09/2003 3,503 Auto Auction
    Sold at auction in Florida
    Listed as a manufacturer vehicle

Soooo what does this mean? It doesn't show any problem titles, but could this be an indicator that they've buried something? It's the NEXT record that is the first owner.

To put this on topic, it's more of a retail side...
    Wilmington NC
    2004 Subaru Impreza WRX wagon
    silver, 5-speed
    55346 miles
There aren't options on a Subie
Deep rubber, no telling on the brakes.... but it's a dealer sale...
Carfax is clean, but there is that record above that makes me wonder.
Dealer is asking 19,995 on it and I think he's smoking something. How much do you think he has in it, and where to hit him if at all?

Not an expert, but I did the used car Appraisal thing on edmunds & it came up with: Trade-in value $15419, deduct $1745 for the high miles, =$13789. PP $15623, Dealer retail $17123.

Personally, I'd look for one with way lower miles. Maybe from a private seller that has all the service records, etc. I'm not seeing any advantage to this one: way high price, & way high miles? It can't be the only WRX wagon out there.

This is a general question for our experts. I've been having a discussion with a guy who doen't see any down side to buying/driving salvage titled cars. I maintain that they take a HUGE hit in value and that the factory won't seriously entertain any warranty claims on a salvage car. As an example, how much of a hit would a salvage title make on his recently purchased 2002 BMW 325xi?
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,277
I've always heard that a good rule of thumb was to pay no more than 1/3 the book value for a car with a salvage title. I doubt you would find a seller willing to sell one at that price, though.

I believe there is a clause in the warranty that says it's not valid if the car has a salvage title--it should be in there with the other exclusions about racing and abuse. I remember reading a discussion a while back that suggested that BMW's intranet could detect a salvage title when the car was brought in for warranty service, but I'm not sure if this is true or not.

Perhaps the car's value to your friend didn't take a huge hit in value--but he may be in for a rude awakening in any number of ways:
    * The car doesn't look/drive right
    * It's difficult to obtain insurance on a salvage car
    * Parts on the car fail due to its involvement in an accident
    * Said parts are not covered under warranty due to its salvage status
    * He tries to sell it and no dealer will take it on trade
    * Worst of all, the car is in another serious collision and, due to poor repairs, does not perform as it should. Besides obvious the structural issues, it's not uncommon for rebuilders to just replace covers over the airbags instead of replacing the bag, and then tape over the SRS warning bulb.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Warranties automatically are void on salvage vehicles, also no bank will finance one.
Expect to pay from 1/4 to 1/2 book value for such a vehicle, depending on the car, year, etc.

Basically, stay away. I've seen a bunch of salvage cars that look great from 50 ft, but are nightmares up close.
Most of the time they are put back together on the cheap.
Iwouldn't own one, or drive one.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238

Looking for a real-world trade-in value - I have an offer from a dealer but it seems pretty low for this car. I have all the online values (kbb, edmunds, nada) but I realize they can be high. Just want to have a figure to compare the dealer's offer against, for a reality check. Details are:

    2001 Mazda Protege LX 2.0

How sure are you, because at 20K trade, that is like 7-8K more than they are selling them for as a CPO. Seems way too low and a crazy markup.

If you are looking at manheim did you veryfy the packages, this one is loaded with extra packages no with common models.

I agree, it looks like his last post was April 9th. :-( However, his profile shows last login as April 16th.

I still hope he is on the beach in Costa Rica.

I'm looking at a 2005 BMW 330ci with the performance package, cold weather package, and xenons. NO leather, NO automatic. It has 5500 miles and they are asking $40k for it. What do you think is a realistic offer?

    Thank you,

Considering the car retailed for around $45k new and only has 5500 miles plus (I presume?) a 100k CPO warranty.... I'd say $40k ain't bad. KBB shows $42k (and that's without taking into account the CPO).

I've got to laugh at Edmunds' pricing, though... The Performance Package only adds $200 to the value when you price out the car here. :confuse:

Well since it is a 2005 with 5,500 miles on it I bet it has a story.

Like the person that bought it originaly decided they wanted a 5 series after 3 months. Or maybe they wanted a different color. Taking that into account I bet they took it in trade and they stole it too. So I would find out how much a BMW warranty to 100,000 miles retails for, figure at least a 50% mark up on the warranty, just call up another BMW dealership ask fot the F&I guy and ask him what he will sell you the warranty for.

$40,000 even is the edmunds TMV CPO price, you got to know how edmunds breaks up the various option packages and just select the right things for it to work, so they are asking about TMV depending on how things change in your region and the color of the car since you did not say.

So depending on how things went when I talked with the people at the dealership I would offer between 35k and 36k plus the cost of the warranty. So say the F&I guy says the warranty will cost you $3,000 and you figure a minimum of 50% mark up you would ofer between 37k and 38k.
