    Blackcoupe...

If you can find me cars like that...

Let's just say there's a hefty finder's fee for you!

I'm thinking that $11,000 to maybe $11,500 is the money on this car if its' overall in clean shape..

You're in line here. Ya know.. it seems like KBB.com is a touch more realistic on domestics...

    Uhh...

Running this lease till the end and paying the miles will probably be cheaper.

Right now, my guess is that you are tanked to the degree of roughly $4,000-4,500.

I would say that your car is worth $8,500 or so. MAYBE $9,000 but with some damage I think that is pushing it.

So, say you will have $4,000 in mileage charges.. Hmm... its' almost a toss-up.

Call your local dent doctor/dent wizard place and see if they cant touch it up for $200 or so with an airbrush.

You may also want to consider selling it privately..

Next time, please make sure you write your next lease for the miles you will need.. it will be much cheaper!

    ....... Go Vikings..!

Well if this little darlin' is clean (except for the miles.. just a "tinge" on the high side ) it should be a vehicle that will be in the -need- stage because of your area. I'm thinkin' mid $11's. specific color up north isn't as important as some of the s/states.

Maximize your value -- whether you trade, or retail, have this little dude detailed. I was in a Buick store on saturday, and a couple traded in a "filthy" 98 Buick Lesabre custom, leather, analog

gauges, CD Concert sound, alloys with 25K. it just needed a BIG

cleaning. The UC guy hit's it at $10,000, moves to $10,500 to make

the deal. I pay $10,800 for the vehicle and have it detailed ( it

looks like a diamond now ) and that little puppy will do "all" of

$11,3/4/5 at the auction --- Clean em' before you trade em' or

retail em' -- The customer lossed out by a "Gee whiz" and so did

    that dealer.

    I hope this helps...

    Ouch. At least I know...

The mileage would have been fine, had I not fallen in love and moved across the country. Ah well....

Did either of you guys ever come across any Toyota MR2's? I am looking for the older body style, probably a 1987,88, or 89. Do any of these ever show up? Any idea as to what pricing may be?

I'm thinking I could probably pick up a clean one down south. Not too many clean one's up in Michigan. A supercharged one wouldn't be bad either. Just looking for info right now

Thanks to brentwoodvolvo and rroyce for the advice! Yes, I'm not surprised that KBB is more in line than Edmunds for these domestic cars. When I bought this Blazer, my Sunfire (in similar condition to my current Blazer) was valued at about $8500 on Edmunds but more like $6800 on KBB. So I offered something like 2.5% over invoice on the Blazer, less $7000. They accepted my offer immediately with no haggling, put my car on their lot for about $9500, and for all I know got high $8000s. I figure my deal was not superb but decent. Win-win situation as I had tried to sell it through the paper, but no calls. ($10250/bo as I recall, then $9600, then $8900, then I gave up.)

I am slowly but surely seeing the wisdom of buying foreign, in terms of trade-in values....

As for colors, I am still somewhat baffled, but it has been enlightening reading the views of the car salespeople who admit that they preferred the "wrong" color on certain vehicles....

Anyway, I will keep scanning the forum for advice, but don't hold your breath for me to buy tomorrow, I take forever to do this. Buying my house took half an hour; buying a car takes more like a year. Go figure. :)

Thanks again! Oh yeah, go Vikings I guess. One can always hope. Again I recommend not holding your breath. :)

    ...... Going through a mid-life crisis ... ? l...o...l..

I don't see too many, maybe 1/2 a month if that. And they are still loved ... I guess.

An 89 ran through last week with 74K and the t-tops -- it was a nice vehicle -new Pirelli's and it was white, and "looked" like, it was all there. ( I just did a walk by ) it did $3,000. I'm not that familiar with the MR2's, but I gotta' think -- oooooH, that's a lot ...

To find the nice ones you've really got to join a car club and find one that way. There are lots of folks that love them and they are your best conduit to a nice one. If you do find a good one on a dealer's lot, it's just plain luck.

Lots were sold in So Cal and, I'd guess, Florida. It was a real warm-weather car.

Rear wheel drive, stiff ride, [non-permissible content removed] car, in Michigan? Uhhh, no. Unless the owner wanted his car to be the main attraction at a Dead Wings game.

    $3,000????

    =O !!!

Yeah that seems like a lot!!! Although after watching 180K mile 92 Camry LEs in rough shape do $2,500+ nothing surprises me..

In my recent trolling through used car lots (in NJ), I saw a few of the older style (I actually like them too). Too bad they all seemed to be ratty with a ton of miles.

Keep an eye on the paper or auto trader an maybe you will get lucky with a 1-owner private sale. I have a feeling many of these got passed around to kids that beat them up bad (you know, run hard and put away wet).

3K for a 1989 MR2 with low miles seems like a good deal to me. Yeah maybe I am going through a mid-life crisis (if thats possible at 25):

Anyway I used to own a 1987 MR2 about 6 or 7 years ago and that car was a blast. Not the fastest car around but really unique. Maybe when I get ready to do something I can give you a call?

Terry/Bill - what do you think?
'98 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro, 40K miles, Silver w/ Black CLOTH interior, 5 speed, sunroof, Bose w/ 6 disk CD changer, heated seats. Body looks in very good condition (only couple minor scratches). Tires will need to be raplaced in ~5K miles or so...
Bought it at Arena Auto Auction (Manheim) during VWoA sale. Winning bid was $16,300 + auction fees ($185), $250 for my friend, + TTL...
What do you think? Where would you have hit it?
There were quite a few of them going through - some (w/ 20K+ miles in pearl white) brought ~$18K.
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    FINALLY!! :))

I think ya bought it right. Seems to be in line, color is certainly right. And you wanted a "handshaker".

Only reservaton I might have is the cloth.. but not bad on a 1.8t methinks...

Nice car! Now go enjoy it! :)

    Bill
  • goralgoral Member Posts: 149
Since the car has black interior, it would get pretty hot in the summer.
And the 1.8T doesn't/didn't (???) come w/ leather, only leatherette.

Besides, my friend almost didn't make it to the auction (more than half of the cars were already sold when he got there) and the selection was getting little light. I sure as heck wasn't goint to waste another day :)
The car that I really wanted was a red '98 2.8 Quattro AVANT "handshaker", but it was little more than I wanted to spend :). Maybe next time, when it's time to replace my wife's 3.5RL... Unless she pushes hard enough for X5 :)

If you remember me, ( own the Catera, trying to buy the 2000 Audi A6 4.2 Quattro ).
Well I made the offer to my neighbor of $39,000 and I thought he was going to pass out l...o...l
But we did agree to $40,500 and it's a done deal. He is happy, and I'm overjoyed.
Now, all I have to do is sell the Catera. I put an Ad in the paper with "your" 5 liner with the price of $19,995. I hope it goes as smoothly as the Audi deal.
Again, thanks for the help! I will give an update.

Not near as much as it would if you bought it in Texas, moved to Denver (like half the state of Texas has - my wife's from Texas and I went to school in San Antonio so I'm allowed to say that :) and tried to sell the car up here. You can't give away a 2WD SUV up here or anywhere else it snows.

...any reason why Honda dealers won't not step up to the plate and off even close to a fair trade on my 97 Volvo S90 for a '01 Accord EX V6. First dealer, oohed and ahhed over the car when they looked at it, called around (supposedly) and called back the next morning to offer my $11K when I've already received offers of over $14K? Btw, this was a "no haggle" dealer who was selling the Accord for $24.6K. Anotherwords, they wanted to have their cake and eat it too. Salesman was embarrassed to call me back and tell me the bad news. The next Honda dealer said we could sell me the Accord for around $23K (verbal) and when I went back to mention a trade in said they couldn't/wouldn't give me anything close to what I think is fair - like $13K+. Promised to call back and never had the courtesy to do so....interesting since the salesman (who was less than sharp!) said come on, Mr ___ , what will it take for you to drive home with the car today, etc? Mention trade-in and...silence....

So much for considering the "acclaimed" Accord! To say I was less than impressed with the Accord dealers (compared to Volvo, Saab and Audi) is an understatement....
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
........ Well perhaps you didn't run into a flock of rocket scientists.

But if you give us some more info on this 97 S90 ( you know like, miles, color, condition etc ) --- we might be able to make a Judgement on their descision ...

    Amen..

...... Thanks for the info ..!

2000 Navs, with the 2WD and all the stuff -- quad seats, slider, tow pack, Alpine, dual breeze, rear set-up etc are doing in and around the $27,000ish figure -- the 2WD doesn't help much, and the miles are a little on the high side ....

Now it's a "mucho" different story on a 4WD --- clean, low mile, toyed out Navs, are doing in and around that $30,000ish+ figure ..

....97 Volvo S90, 57K miles, good condition, dealer maintained, 1 owner, coral red (I know, I know!), never been in an acccident, etc...btw, the 2nd dealer never even looked at my car....1st dealer really took a good luck at it, went on a test drive with the finance guy, kept saying "what a nice car, well-maintained, etc"..never indicated there might be a problem, called around the next day and then had his salesman call me to offer....$11K!!!...heck, even Car Max offered $2K more 2 months ago!....Volvo's offered $13.5 recently though not really fond of the S60 I test drove (and only Volvo model I'd consider) and Saab has offered $14K to trade in for a 2001 9-5 (with another $8.2K in incentives, etc). Also Audi offered $14.5 a month ago on a trade for a 2001 A4 1.8T (man, I should have jumped on that!)

Just checked out Honda because I'd heard so many good tings about the Accords so thought I might get a nice car and save $5K+.... actually not too disappointed because there are SO many of them on the roads....just curious what the heck their problem was....

So...now back to the A4, 9-5 and possibly, though unlikely, the S60......

    Appreciate any comments....

...... Well you must be in an area of Texas that doesn't like..or .. know about Volvo's. ( Well they don't like George W. .. but, look what happened ) l...o...l.....

If, the Volvo is super clean -- You know the drill ..... Knee deep in rubber, the interior looks like a 2000 vehicle and exterior is "Stone Clean" ... and hey -- I like the coral red -----

But anyway you are in and around a $13,000+ vehicle if it's the sedan. The miles are just a little high - but a Volvo buyer, or any import buyer for that matter, will know .. this vehicle will run another 150,000+ miles (properly maintained) ...

    I hope this helps ..

Roommate has a black 1995 Mitsubishi Galant with power windows, power locks, and automatic transmission. It has approximately 98,000 miles on it. There is no trim level designation on the trunk. I would say the condition is fair. Location is Kansas City, Missouri. What would the probable trade in value be? What would the likely private sale amount be.

I have a 1993 Ford Escort Wagon with a manual transmission and the only power option is powered remote mirrors. It has 153,000 miles on it and it is in fair shape. What would a fair sales price be.

On either one of these cars, would it be worth the $150 to have a detailing job done?

With the recent box office success of The Fast And The Furious, I am just curious as to if the price on used Supras has gone up.

It seems that a lot of stock is put on a car having new tires when you go to sell or trade it in. Does this go for any new tires? In other words, is a person helped by putting on a $25 dollar tire or should they put on more expensive "shoes?"
  • novattnovatt Member Posts: 8
Got a 95 Eclipse GSX with ~71000 miles.

Black, moonroof, AC, AWD, ABS, power seat, premium tires.

Edmunds says trade in value is ~$7k depending on condition.

CarMax gave me a quote for $4k. Reasons? 1. High mileage (71k on a 7 year old car?) 2. Replaced front bumper panel (news to me, although I did buy the car used).

They even stated that there is no frame damage.

Am I thinking that they are just way completely off base?

I'm planning on getting a new car some time either this year or next. My current vehicle is an 89' Chrysler LeBaron convertible. White, automatic, approx 83,000 miles, power windows doors and seats, and leather interior.

The car is in either good or fair condition (depending upon your definition). I plan on fixing it up a bit prior to getting rid of it. But I'm just wondering what a dealer would give me for it as a trade-in? I'm just trying to figure out if I'm better off selling it myself or trading it in.

BTW I live on Long Island (That's in NY for you non-East Coasters).

    Thanks guys

Black, 4x4, trip computer. Nothing else really - no leather or sunroof.

Car is in above average shape, with only 36,500 miles.

What should I expect for a trade in vs. a private party sale?

    Thanks - Damon

That's about where I see it and my faith in dealerships was restored tonight when the local Lexus dealer offered $13K in about 10 mins...considering a 2001 ES 300...and they immediately offered one (MSRP $34.5K) for $31.5K...such a pleasant change to the hassles with Honda!!! Difference in dealerships was night and today...to be expected, I guess.
  • flootfloot Member Posts: 22
Can I get an idea of realistic trade-in value on the following car:

    1996 Toyota Corolla STD Sedan
    43,700 miles
Teal paint that has tiny spots on hood, trunk, and roof (don't know what they are)
    3 speed automatic transmission
    Air conditioning
    AM/FM Stereo Cassette
    Window tint
New tires -- Michelin Weatherwise (does this make a difference?)
    Maintenance up-to-date; no mechanical problems

I live in Greenville, NC. Kelly Blue Book says $4200 if I choose "fair" condition -- Should I (yikes)be prepared for even lower than this?

Thanks for any help you can give me.
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Galant?

Hmm... $2,000 is where it hits me. Maybe to $2,500 if its' really nice... $4,450 in the paper.

Escort.. I'd throw it in the paper for like $1,950 and see where that gets ya.

$150 for a detail? No. Get some "TUFF STUFF", some rags, give it a good wash, vacuum it and then tuff stuff the plastic parts of the interior that get dirty.

  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    As far as tires...

Hmm, bring me a late-model car with the "4 for $149" specials on it.. I'll be inclined to think it wasn;t well maintained (Tires are a big sticking point for me... IMNSHO, cheap tires are like cheap parachutes, cheap crash helmets..cheap condoms..)

On an older car... If you're gonna trade it in or sell it.. I'd actually get a set of used tires in the right size that match and have good tread.

Supras? Maybe for a time... Heck, try FINDING a nice Supra turbo!

    Bill
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Hmm..

    I'm not seeing $7,000 here...

$4K is too cheap if its' NICE.

Maybe more like $5,500-6K or so.

Sell it yourself. You probably don't want to know what its' worth as a trade-in.

Put it in the paper for $2,450/bo

Throughout this topic (I've spent a few days skimming through it) is the constant theme of "sell it yourself, you'll do better than what the trade-in amount will be."

What's a fair price to ask when selling it myself ? Should I use wholesale + some, or split the difference between wholesale & retail ?

    Example: I have a 2000 Camaro Z/28 -
    approx. 6500 miles, original owner
    bought new 9/2000
Monterey Maroon metallic (dark dark red)
Automatic transmission/ 3.23 optional axle ratio
    1SD equipment group (full options)
    T-tops
    Chrome wheels
    245/50 ZR16 Goodyear RS-As (optional performance tire)
    ASR (traction control)
    Rear window defroster
    Power steering cooler
    Monsoon single in-dash CD

    Original MSRP was $26,445

Basically, this car is fully loaded, every single option available except for leather, CD changer, and the "sport appearance package" (ground effects). It's in perfect condition, been garaged since purchased.

What should I expect for trade-in ? And, what should I ask if selling it myself ? I live in Reno, Nevada, which isn't so great for high-HP RWD cars (snow)... but Northern California is just a few minutes away, and Sacramento, CA would be the place I'd likely trade it in (if traded).

I am highly tempted by the Acura TL type S... :-)

Thanks! This forum has been *very* interesting.

Thanks guys, I kinda figured that, I just wanted to make sure. :)

Brentwood, do you really think I could get $2400 for it? I know kbb was putting it anywhere from $1000-$2000 (depending upon condition). Honestly I thought I would be lucky if I could get $1500 for it.
