If it was a corporate demo, then it does qualify for CPO status. Regardless of the miles, if the dealer bought it from BMW as a corporate demo, then it'll get CPO certification....
HOWEVER, if it was a corporate Performance Center car, then it definitely doesn't get certification. Of course, if that car was beat to hell, probably with some body damage, at the Performance Center in SC, then I'm not sure I'd want any part of that car. Ask them to pull up the "DSC History" in front of you... it would say on there if it was used at the Performance Center.
I know you're a Rover expert, so I don't know if you're familiar with BMWs.... The Performance Package is a $4000 option that includes engine upgrades, suspension upgrades, body modifications, larger racing wheels, Alcantara suede sport seats and trim, and M3-style wheel/shifter/etc. These cars are hot on the used car market..... The fact that Edmunds lists it was a $200 add is a joke. They've clearly got to update that here on their website. As a result, that car's value is much higher than what Edmunds indicates.
The Range Rover Oxford/Luxury option is like that. It is 5,000 dollars new but worth a big ZERO on the wholesale side.
Edmunds absolutely screwed up if Galves shows the option is a 1,500 dollar add and they are only showing a couple of hundred dollars.
As to the CPO status of the car if it was titled then yes they can put a CPO on it. They might not want to but they can. If the car was never titled then they can probably not but a CPO warranty on it. Either way though you could always by the 100,000 miles warranty just treat it like the rest of the purchase and negotiate on the price of the warranty too.
It has nothing to do with being the original owners or not....
Okay, here's the deal:
1) If the car was simply a demo car used by a BMW exec, then it is CPO-eligible, regardless of the miles. It will have the remainder of the factory maintenance/warranty and then the CPO warranty after that. Also, this car will not have ever been titled.
2) If it was a "demo" that was used at the BMW Performance Center in SC, then it is NOT CPO-eligible, regardless of miles. It will have the remainder of the factory maintenance/warranty and then the CPO warranty after that, but nothing after that, and it is NOT eligible for a BMW extended warranty purchase. Also, this car will not have ever been titled.
3) If it was a normal customer trade-in, then it may or may not be CPO-eligible. If the car was originally retailed a month or two ago, then it might be restricted. However, the 5500 miles on the car might offset this, making it CPO-eligible. If it is not CPO-eligible, the car would still be eligible for a BMW extended warranty, regardless of it being the 2nd owner. Also, this car will have already been titled.
These are the facts... Do with them what you will.
The car was a corporate lease vehicle. Title was issued in CA on 05/06/2005 w/10 miles. It was then sold at auction on 03/01/2006 with 4,991 miles as a manufacturer vehicle. On 03/09/06 is passed emissions at a Texas state inspection with 4,996 miles.
Y'all had me question my salesman, who has sold me 3 cars. So, I ran a carfax. Not that it is a guarantee...
So, it would qualify for a CPO? I wonder why it isn't? Then again, I haven't kept one of my BMW's for over 2 years, let alone 50,000 miles...
Last I checked. I'm at $36,400 and they are at $36,600. I'm thinking this is still a fair price.

2005 saab 9-2x aero. black, AWD, 5sp, roof, cold weather package (heated seats, mirrors, wipers) 17" rims, 6cd changer, 13,700 miles, a couple little scuffs around the bottom of the front bumper, a chip here and there (nothing ugly) curious as to what this would go for trade, private party, and retail (if you dont mind kind sir!)

I'd also grill them more about the CPO issue--they probably just don't want to pay for it, but it does possibly raise a red flag. Of course, if you can afford to trade bmw's every 2 years, you may not be as concerned about all this. The price: Terry would know, but seems to be AWOL, or something. You could also look into European Delivery of a new one.....I knew someone who bought a new 540i 6sp that way, & then blasted around the autobahn at 100mph for a couple of weeks.....
Oh yeah, he's saving more than $5k.... That car retails for about $45k, usually without large discounts in price.

I agree, it should raise a red flag that they say it isn't a CPO car.... A car that was purchased almost a year ago, regardless of miles, should qualify for CPO status. If it doesn't, then something is wrong....

exterior in horrid condition complete roof and hood sunfade and rust, rust spots on front of bumper and hood and along sides of van in small spots, black plastic material between windows totally worn off or sun faded
interior equally as appealing -torn seats - one seat has a seat cover so I assume it's even worse, aftermarket stereo, tufted headliner or perhaps just really saggy, total taliban invasion.
He gave us three estimates- $1587.91, $1,110.06, and $1175.34.
He doesn't want the vehicle fixed but wants me to give him $900 which I think is totally rediculous. Accident pushed in the front passenger door - no other body panel damage- and estimates are for replacement door and blending into front fender and sliding door, and replacement of door molding. He is concerned that his vehicle will be totalled and issued a salvage title leaving him with a "boat anchor". My only issue is that my insurance will take a hit if the payout is greater than $1000, but the hit will be approx $175 per year for three years ($525). What would you do - he wants me to pay him the $900, but the insurance agent is a family friend and will gladly pay any claim less than $1000 and a claim less than $1000 is not "pointable" and will not raise my rates.

So, you are likely to see a lot of '03 and '04 model CPO cars.. even some '05s... But '06 CPOs will be relatively rare.. Most people are very happy with 42 months and 45K miles of warranty...
I don't think you have to look for a "negative" just because the car isn't CPOed..

It looks pretty clear-cut:
You can pay him the $900 out of pocket and he goes away, or you can get your insurance agent to pay him the $900 with no hassle and he goes away, or, worst case, you give him a hard time, and he can turn in the $1600 claim to your insurance carrier and jack your insurance rate up for the next few years.
Actually, a case worse than that would be if he was in the van at the time it was hit, you give him a hard time, and he suddenly develops an injury from the accident.
If he had backed into your vehicle, would you be okay if he tried to argue that if you had been driving a clunker, there would have been no damage?
He's offering to settle for what appears to be less than the cash value of his claim. You win because you pay less than you otherwise would have, he wins because his vehicle isn't totalled.
I am just wondering because he seemed to disappear about the same time as the baseball season started. Could it be possible that his name is not Terry but is actually Barry, as in Barry Bonds. Think about it have you ever seen the two together. I know Barry Bonds has a big car collection also.

Just not sure what the right discount from TMV or other market prices should be for a car with a rebuilt title. He offers 30-day warranty. My offer would be contingent on an third-party inspection.
30 days is not nearly long enough to detect any problem with the car--and that will be the only warranty you have, as the manufacturer's warranty is void. Many reputable body shops offer a lifetime guarantee on their bodywork.
The car will actually only be a year old this summer; not 2, like someone said. I actually am okay with the standard warranty because out of the 3 previous BMW's I've owned, I've never had one longer than 2 years, let alone 50k miles. I like the idea of a CPO, just in case I get a wild hair up my _ss and actually keep a car longer... (I have to grow up at some point, right?)
I really do not see a negative at the moment other than the CPO stuff.
I've looked all over the country for an '06 with the options I want, and I can't find it. They either have leather or an auto, which for me is a NO NO...
Also, as someone said, a new one would retail for about $44k and I don't think they would deal nearly as much as the one I'm going to get.
I could wait for the new coupes, but I must be one of the only ones that thinks it looks like a Mercedes coupe and more luxury than sport. I am into the SPORT.
Now, the Z4 Coupe intrigues me, but no back seat is an issue. Maybe in a few years when I'm ready for another BMW. ;o)

I didn't invent this, I'm not interested in arguing over it, I've learned this fact from a number of sources... it's like the weather and the stock market, it is what it is, whether you like it or not.
Personally, I'd have to "save" a lot more than a few thousand dollars to buy this one vs. new.

If you want the CPO, see what they'll charge you for it. If it's around $1300, it's almost a bargain to pay that to get 2 extra years of warranty on a bmw......And this is an '05, is that right? Exactly how many months are left on the warranty (what's the in-service date)?

That vehicle is well known for both head gasket failures, a $1800 repair, and transmission failures, a $2500 repair, typically when it gets past 100K miles. So, most dealers will not want it for retail sale on the used lot.
If it were in good condition for its age, it would go to auction and more than likely end up on a buy here pay here lot with a price of $500 down and $50 a week, aka an overinflated retail sales price of around $4,900 plus the interest!!!
Real world private party sale to a larger working family who needs a family mover in decent condition, no reason you could not see an easy $2,900 with little effort on your part. i.e. give it a bath and vacuum, park it at Wally World with a big for sale sign with the price and your CELL phone number (have it on while you are shopping), asking $3,900. Another good place to advertise is the bulletin board at the larger laundry facilities, use a good printed digital picture.

If selling it, I would say you find out the lowest price for a new one and deduct for the mileage accordingly. I would say maybe ask $2k below new transaction price.

Step #2 if it has significant body damage, value will vary a lot and most values will be generalizations depending on the work and extent of the damage. Again if you want an closer to accurate value, post ALL the information. What was the extent of the damage (i.e. look at the body shop invoice).
The body damage from the deer was not bad (the collision did not even knock the deer down). The driver's side headlight was replaced and the driver's side front fender was replaced. I think the hood and driver's door were repainted, I don't remember the exact total for the body work, but it was somewhere near $1500. This included replacing the windshield that had been cracked for years.

Used Car managers can see the Manheim auctions and know what things are worth. A couple of phone calls will get you a value for just about anything.
Ultimately, it just depends on how aggressive your dealer is.
Remember, the number most car buyers see isn't ACV(actual cash value), its a trade "allowance"

It typically takes much longer to find a buyer for a 5 speed manual and the price must be much lower in most markets than the books will even show.
Even though the asking price is reasonable, 3 weeks is simply not long enough to wait for a buyer for a manual transmission (unless it is a sports type of car and sprin time).
As for your cash buy price at a dealer, take it to several dealers and shop it around. Try carmax if you have one in your area.
I've got my trusty '04 Vibe 5sp in the paper, for about $1,300 over auction price... 10 days and no real bites yet.
5-speeds in MI sell when they're $3-5k or so, but in the $10 region, things get a little iffy.
On top of that, not everywhere in our wonderful state are Toyotas the vehicle of choice... where ya be?

In the fall/winter, you can get fabulous deals at the local auction on bread-and-butter cars... and while I don't think I can make money by occasionally buying and selling cars, I "shud" be able to drive for free.
Heaven knows I've invested enough time getting smart about cars...
