Alright, so the advice I was given was to repost this. So here it is for the third time. I would appreciate any help I can get. I'm in talks with a dealership and I think they're lowballing me on the trade in value. They say $14,000, is that a fair trade in value?

    Syracuse, NY
    2004 Chevy Colorado LS
    Crew Cab
    3.5L 5cylinder engine, auto transmission
    Z71 4x4 Offroad package
    52,000 miles (highway)
Sunburst Orange exterior, dark grey cloth interior
Alloy wheels, power sunroof, premiere sound system, Chrome Tubular sidesteps, bed liner, tonneau cover, keyless entry, power windows, power locks
    Condition:
Excellent - a few minor chips from road rocks, not very noticable unless you get up close. No rust on body, very few spots of surface rust starting on undercarriage. Interior has no tears and only a few minor surface scratches near door handles.
Tires are new Goodyear Fortera Silent Armor tires, 70,000 mile treadlife. Have been on the truck for 6 months, about 9,000 miles.
Brakes are in good condition. Almost all miles are on highway
Oil changed every 3000 miles, tires rotated every 6,000 miles. Fuel filter recently changed. Never needed any other maintenance or repairs.
Only owner, no accidents, repairs or body work done to this vehicle. Extended warranty through Warranty Direct covers vehicle to 148,000 miles and is transferrable to new owner.

You have an average condition truck w/ LOTS of miles.

Looking at the auctions, they are probably pretty close to the money on this.

What were you thinking its worth?
  • british_roverbritish_rover Member Posts: 8,502
    Probably 18,500. :P

Sounds like it might be a nice one ..... it's an 04 Colorado LS Crew Cab 4x4 with some Z71 action ... the miles are tall, but the color is right, we got the slider and some tubes, we got the cover and the liner - but no hydes, we got some new round things and you say it's been serviced with no paint by numbers ...... if so, then trade side .. in and around the low/mid $14's ..... $14 "seems" a little low, but it's got 50k and it's the middle of June in Nu Yawk ......

Good luck and let me know ....

PS: the warranty isn't any good to the dealer -- call warranty co because you probably have a refund if it's never been used.

I don't think it's worth 18,500 on a trade in. I did an average of Edmunds, KBB and NADA and the average trade in value of the three for this vehicle was around 16,200. So I'm looking for 16,500 out of the dealer. Looking at local dealers with similar used colorados that have less options and only extended cabs, they're selling for high teens, low 20's. I'm trading on a vehicle that has been sitting on their lot for over 3 months, so they're desperate to get rid of it and I think that gives me a little negotiating power. This vehicle has always been garage kept as well. Thanks for the advice on the warranty, I'll definitely get that refund and put it towards a downpayment. I'll let you know how it turns out!
  • british_roverbritish_rover Member Posts: 8,502
So you want more then the average of three online price guides two of which are notoriously high on almost all vehicles and none of them actually buy cars.

Anything over 15,000 is just an over allowance on the dealers part but it is the differance that matters so if you just want to think your car is worth more go right ahead.
  • theflushtheflush Member Posts: 100
Terry or others in the bidness, I need your help determining the true trade in value of my truck. One dealer is offering more than it's probably worth ($6600, but not coming down on the sales price of the vehicle I want), and CarMax only offered me $2500 (everything was considered "consistent with age"), which seems on the low side to me. I know I need to sell it myself to get the most out of it, but knowing the true trade in value of it helps me evaluate how good a deal some of the purchase offers are. I'm thinking I could sell it for around $6,000 if I sell it myself. Is that realistic?

    AC works well
    Sliding rear window.
No power windows, power locks, or cruise control.
I hit a deer last fall, but it was repaired properly. Did not even knock the deer down, but did <$1500 in damage to driver's side front fender, headlight assembly, and the door had to be repainted, but not replaced. Well maintained, tires 50%, front brakes 50%, rear brakes are new, alternator is new, plugs and wires just replaced. It cleans up nice for its age.
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,272
...they're selling for high teens, low 20's.

They're asking high teens, low 20's, not selling for that amount.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Well, there you have it. No way on earth that truck is worth $16 grand in real money.
I'm sure that an overallowance in the neighborhood can be shown, but thats the only way you will see that number from a dealer.
As for the age of the vehicle you are shopping, yes the dealer wants to get rid of it, but not at the expense of burying themselves in your trade. They would just be exchanging one problem for another, not good business.

Call me crazy, but I just purchased an '06 Odyssey EX-L with DVD and am already regreting the purchase and looking for an exit strategy...just trying to get opinions on how long to hold on to the car or how much new cars depreciate immediately.

    L.A. area
    2006/Honda Odyssey/EX-L with DVD
    Automatic
    Mileage: Approx. 200 miles
    Midnight Blue exterior/grey leather interior
    In pristine new condition

Would so much rather have a Honda Pilot now that I see the 2WD option gets fairly decent gas milage and is so much more my style. Am too embarrassed to call the dealer that sold it to me to negotiate a trade-in for a Pilot and title and registration haven't even gone through.

    Any suggestions?
  • hartthartt Member Posts: 79
I posted this message for Carman over in the Pilot lease questions and he suggested I post it over here.
I currently have a lease on an 03 Pilot EX that ends in August. The vehicle is in great condition. My buyout at lease end is $17,800. KBB values this vehicle at a little over $21K assuming "good" condition if I were to sell it to a private party. I have seen others asking even more.
I am tossing around the idea of buying it and selling it myself if there is a profit to be made. I am looking for some opinions on this idea?

    Thanks.

I have an '05 Odyssey Touring and my wife has an '05 Pilot. My advice is to give it some time - the Odyssey is a FAR better all around vehicle and gets vastly superior mileage (averaged 28 mpg just yesterday on a 470 mile drive from Asheville, NC to Columbus, OH).

However, if you want to pay for your "style," go ahead and talk to the dealer (who will not be bothered by your embarassment in the least). Better yet, though, since Odysseys can be bought new for less than invoice (though some do not know this), put it in the paper - you may be able to come close to recouping your cost.

The deciding factor here is probably whether CA allows sales tax credit on a new vehicle trade.
  • mom2devmom2dev Member Posts: 2
Thanks so much for your thoughts. I've been told by several people that they grow to love their Odyssey and could never go back to a sedan or SUV. I did have all 3 kids this weekend and did think it was great to have the extra room...although I travel far less often with all 3 kids in the car. It's just so large...the '06 parked next to an earlier model seemed gigantic in comparison...they've gotten so big it seems...and consumes more than 1/2 of our 2 car garage.

I was fortunate to pay less than invoice so I think you're right to think about posting in the paper....CA does not have the trade-in tax break (of course, CA is a horrible tax state), so selling to a private party I think is more beneficial.

Thanks again for your thoughts...now I have to decide whether to give it time to grow on me or post in the paper to sell.
  • anonymouspostsanonymousposts Member Posts: 3,802
you might grow to love the Odyssey. It probably drives smoother and is more fuel-efficient than the Pilot. I would also bet on it being safer due to the size and newer design.
  • steine13steine13 Member Posts: 2,825
I'll bet the width of the Ody is within an inch of the Pilot. Like all vans, the Odyssey looks big and feels big to drive, but isn't really all that large... the height that's carried all around the car makes it seem forbidding. The old Sienna, for instance, has the same footprint as the Taurus, maybe even smaller. True story :-)

For all that, an '86 Chevy fullsize van (SWB) is smaller than the current generation Sienna or Odyssey... a touch wider, but definitely much shorter (180"). Doesn't feel that way when you're driving it, though.. slab sides make anything feel big.

Oh yeah, and anyone who defines how sexy they are by what they drive needs a new philosophy... but I'm in the minority on that, I know...

I did an apprasisal of my car's TMV and it came out really low (I took a big hit due to milage). However, if I do a search for cars in my area on autotrader.com and craigslist.org, the prices people are asking seem a lot higher.

Should I expect to have to lower my price precipitously, or is TMV and KBB just off for private party sales?

    Thanks.

(Yes, I know this is the trade-in forum. But there doesn't seem to be a better place to ask.)
  • mikefm58mikefm58 Member Posts: 2,882
To me, the best source when selling a vehicle yourself would be the local newspaper or autotrader (both online and the magazine). Be careful comparing your vehicle to an identical vehicle for sale by a dealer. Those prices would obviously be higher.

As many of us are fond of saying, there is asking and then there is getting.
You can ask whatever you want. What you get can be very different.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Hard to say, because of the miles but I think its an $8-9000 car wholesale.
Probably retail it for $10-11,000, if its really clean.
  • jaserbjaserb Member Posts: 820
Two words - sliding doors. Or for an EX, three words - power sliding doors. A Pilot is just an Odyssey with optional AWD and the most useful minivan feature removed in the name of aesthetics. And the Pilot's still not exactly a movie star in the looks department.

Every time one of the kids has to scramble into the wayback of the Pilot, or throws open the door and dents the car in the next parking space, or you have to juggle kids, keys and groceries to open the door you'll wish you still had those power sliders.

yeah, the mileage makes it tough. she's been thinking about it for a while, but hasnt really had an idea of how much to advertise it for - if it were the correct miles, it would be different. i cant imagine there are a ton of turbo s's out there anyways to use as a guide for this.

terry, any ideas in the national market what this might go for?

    thanks!!!

I bought one of these '03s in February of this year. It's a different color - gray - with 31,000 miles in reasonably good (though not perfect condition), one owner with all the paperwork and service records. Paid $11,500 in a private party sale. They started at $15,000 plus last September.

80,000 miles are a real killer - IMHO grab anything north of 10K if it's offered.

Hi All, I have a 2002 Acura TL Type - S without Nav. Interior and exterior are good shape. just 2 dings.
The car has a full aero package on it but the front left spoiler was scraped. car has 55,000 miles tires are in good shape as well. 1 dealer offered me $12,000 another 13,500 on a purchase of the same type of car.
the $12,000 I know is sending it to auction and the 13,500 has a lot to sell trades. I'm sure i could get more selling on my own but i'm looking for approx values.

Just as a refresher, I am the guy with the '05 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab LE that has had 11K in body work....ouch, I know. Two separate accidents so it wasn't totaled. No frame or engine damage, and absolutely flawless body work...a regular joe would never know it had been wrecked unless it was carfaxed. I realize an expert will be able to tell it's been wrecked. I like the truck, but I would like to trade it for another truck with a lower payment. I still owe $16K. So am I pretty much screwed, or should I even attempt to have a dealer appraise it? Should I be forthcoming with the dealer, or will it even matter? It's not gonna completely break my heart if I have to keep it, but I'd like to know what my options are. I would appreciate feedback as to what to do. Thank you!
  • tsgeiseltsgeisel Member Posts: 352
At this point you might want to consider contacting your loan company and seeing what they could do for you in terms of refinancing, if you made a big lump-sum payment - such as you'd get if you sold your truck. Then, if you can do that, work on getting a new, less expensive truck.

You'll get much better money from a private party sale. Otherwise you're not likely to decrease your payment by trading in your truck to a dealer...
  • steine13steine13 Member Posts: 2,825
There may be some disagreement on this, but I'd play it by auction rules. Do not disclose body work unless frame work was involed or there is a salvage title or similar.
The car is what it is, and it's right under their nose... if they can't tell, it's gotta be just fine.

When asked questions, of course, you have to answer truthfully. And equally of course, they'll see the body work and will adjust their figure accordingly.

Thanks guys. I realize it would be tough to lower my payment on a trade, but I was actually looking at a lease option...not that I want to get into a lease debate...still looking into it at this point....I'm ashamed to say I'm a payment buyer, but I have to crunch the numbers if I can. If you have any other comments/suggestions please I'd love to read them. Also, if anyone else would like to chime in I'd appreciate it. Thanks. TsGeisel, could you elaborate on the refinance thing? I'm not sure I know what you mean by the lump payment. Thank you.
  • flightnurseflightnurse Member Posts: 2,217
Ok people KBB says this car is worth about $1600 as a trade in. BUT this car is very clean, no rips or tears on the inside.

The exterior is in good condition, it has 83K miles, 2.0 4 spd auto, what would should I ask as a trade in??

I just learned on the Jeep GC that I want to lease, the holdback is $2400. I'm getting a great deal on the jeep, so they should be able to give me more then $1600 for t he car as my down payment.

    Tony :shades:
  • tsgeiseltsgeisel Member Posts: 352
Well, it all depends on your finance company. So, presuming you owe $16k, it works like this. You tell the company you want to sell the truck, give them the lump sum of cash that comes from selling it, and then re-finance the amount left on the loan over the same period that you would have been paying it. So instead of paying $16k over 4 years, you'll be paying maybe $4k over 4 years.

They may not go for it, since the only incentive they'll have at that point is the fact that it would be bad for your credit to stop making payments. They can't hold the threat of repossession over your head after you sell the car. However, they will have a bunch of money in hand, and there's a lot to be said for paying off 80% of your loan in one lump sum.

In any case, it can't hurt to ask.
  • jlawrence01jlawrence01 Member Posts: 1,757
If you are convinced that it is worth more than the $1600 you are offered, why don't you buy the Jeep and sell the car yourself. You *MIGHT* be able to get an additional $1000-1500 on the vehicle.

In general, the trade-in value is less than the retail value as the dealer is going to have to recondition the car for resale or will have to bear the costs of sending it to the Mannheim auctions.

Personally, I have avoided Ford Contours as a buyer because they have been a pretty expensive car to maintain as compared with the Escort.

Auction data on these are fairly scarce... they're not coming off lease anymore, so there's not that much to comapare with... the "normal" ones with 40-50k miles seem to do between $14 and $15 at the auctions; take a $2k whack, realistically, to get to 75k...

Forget the "excellent" condition, that's incompatible with that kind of miles, at least to a car dealer... also, any '03 is now a solid 4 (four) years old, June or no June... OTOH it sounds like a nice, cared-for vehicle that a fellow would like to own (leather?)... so I'm guessing $15,900 asking ... wait a week and if nobody shows up, try again a grand lower and cut it loose for $14 or preferably a little over.

It all depends; this isn't a high-volume vehicle... just TRY and find a nice one if you want it... that's why I'd start asking the moon... you never know.

IOW, if you want to keep it, don't pay over $15 for it -- you know exactly the shape it's in, so it might be worth that much to you -- and try to get it for less than $14. Toyota Financial won't see more than $12 at the auction, and they know it.

Good luck, and let us know what happens,
    -Mathias

Forgive me if I'm not following you (i think I am). I would definitely keep the truck if I could not get more than I owed. I realize this is unlikely, but I'm gonna give it a shot.
  • solaraman2003solaraman2003 Member Posts: 92
    YES, it has leather (standard).

The reason I'm fishing for a price is because my lease is up in 2 months and I have the option to purchase at $14k. I want to know if I have any room to negotiate with CHASE for a better price, and how I would go about doing that.

    Thank you,
  • steine13steine13 Member Posts: 2,825
Like I said in the other forum; do a search and look for Terry's advice on how to do it.

Briefly, about six to four weeks before lease end is the right timing, that's when they would be interested.

Speak with a decision maker; regional manager or some such. Not the nice boy or girl who answers the phone when you dial 1-800.

Unfortunately, they're getting pretty good at it; $14 is about right... at which point it only makes sense if you want to keep it... the issue being the 75k miles... you may have to pay a mileage penalty, so figure that in... in that case, you should probably buy, and were I they, I wouldn't budge.

Don't forget sales tax is due on the purchase price also. It ain't "your" car after all, it's theirs.

    Good luck,
    -Mathias

Well I traded in my truck and got $16,500 for it! The dealer also came down $3000 on the price of the car they were selling and they threw in brand new tires and a free Sirius S50 because my truck had satellite radio built in and this one doesn't. My payments are $1 more a month on the same term as my truck but I'm saving $20 a month in insurance because it's a safer vehicle. Not to mention it's a lot more comfortable with more options. In most situations, I probably wouldn't have been able to pull off this kind of deal, but when you have a local dealership that has a goal of selling over 2,000 cars in one month, they'll make any deal to get their bonus. Losing $1,000 or so on a trade in doesn't come close to the million or more that the owner will get from the parent company if he pulls off the 2,000+. And he must be doing something right because he's got 2 personal jets and dealerships all over the US, so it's not bad business on his part. Thanks for the advice on the warranty, I got almost the entire thing back and used it on the down payment. Good luck everyone!

What kind of car were you buying again?

Like we said 15,000 real money was all the money in the world for that truck but it does make business sense to give up 1,500 or 2,000 dollars in order to thousands of dollars in bonus money.

I've finally decided to trade-in my Jeep Cherokee. I'm working out a pretty good deal with a dealership and I haven't sprung it on him just yet that I'll have a trade.

That dealer wouldn't use the tagline "ITS HUGE"
would he? If its him he just traded his Falcon
for a new Gulfstream Jet. I saw it in Savannah Ga.
when new. (My sister works for them).

Its now parked in Syracuse with "HUGH" printed on the
    tail! :P

    Trading in a:
    2004 Ford Explorer 4-door XLS 4x4
    4.0L V6, 5A, 41.5K miles
    Dark green/light tan cloth
    No options
(CD, all power, A/C, cruise standard)
"Above average" condition (no mechanical problems or major cosmetic blemishes)
Tires have maybe 20% left, brakes are original but still OK
All maintenance done including full synthetic oil changes
One owner, no accidents, clean CarFax
Payoff is $11,552.52, they are willing to "allow" this amount

    Looking at a:
    NEW 2006 Accord LX "SE" (2.4L, 5M)
    Black/tan cloth
Only options on this are pinstripes and mudguards
(SE comes with alloys, carbon-look interior inserts, 120W 6-disc in-dash, body colored mirrors, etc.)
    MSRP $21,275 incl. dest.

    NOW THE POTENTIAL DEAL:
    Trade difference of $8,437.50
    +240 taxes
    +275 Dealer Over Charge (DOC)
    +payoff of 11,552.52
    Financing $20,505

SO, I would be out the door for well under MSRP, but aren't these critters going for less than that these days?

What does everyone here think of this deal? (my goal is fair to both parties)

I may be relocating to Southern Indiana/Louisville in the near future. I am trying to get an idea if I should trade my truck here in AZ before I move. The vehicle I have is a 2005 Nissan Titan LE King Cab 4X2. I used to live in Northern Indiana, and a 2 wheel drive pickup was about worthless in the winter months. I am not sure about Southern Indiana... how it will work in the milder winter months down there. Plus, I am looking at resale value. If I can't sell a 4X2 in IN at trade time, I will sell in AZ before I move. Any insight or advice? Thanks for the help!
