Would appreciate your help with a fair private-party or dealer retail price for:

    03 Nissan Maxima GLE
    4dr sedan
    3.5L, V6, Auto
    FWD
    30,000-35,000 miles
    Silver
    Option: BOSE, Moonroof, Leather
    Condition: Good exterior/interior

The prices we've seen look to be in the high $17,900-$20,000 range.

Also, if you know, how much of a difference should there be between a GLE and an SE equipped the same way (leather, BOSE)?

    Thanks very much!

Sorry for the delay. We did not buy a car in September after all. We waited until the warranty expired April 30.

We traded it in 2 weeks ago for a certified pre-owned 2005 Volvo Xc90 with 5800 miles and 6yr/100K coverage. We got $4500 for it. I put new tires on it in September and added another 3000 miles on it.

    Thanks for your help!
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Without the damage the car would bring $15-16000 wholesale.

With the damage(even repaired) and with a bad carfax $12-14000.
You don't have a salvage title, but chances are the carfax will show the accident.

We may be trading in our Ford Escape soon, and I would like an idea of what I should expect to get for it.

    2005 Ford Escape
    XLS
    No extra features (base model)
    AC
    Automatic Transmission
    2 wheel drive
    33,000 miles
    in good condition
I will be trading it in in Southern California.

I have trading in 2 cars in my life, and both times I felt like I got a lot less that I expected for them after I researched the value on KBB. Im I expecting too much, or do I need to be prepared to walk out on a deal over my trade-in.

I wrecked my '05 Nissan Frontier this past winter....together with another dinger, the truck has already had around 11K of body work. However, it looks flawless. You would never know it was ever wrecked. My question is, and please forgive my ignorance on this subject, do I have any chance of trading it in for a new vehicle at a dealer given the accidents? I assume it would be impossible for me to trade, but was looking for some help from others. Thanks.
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,272
Yes, you can trade it in. The question is how much they will offer you--a professional will be able to tell it was hit and repaired, but may not know exactly how much work was done. Do the accidents show up on Carfax?

Could anyone give me an idea of what this car may be worth? Kelly says 5500-6500

    Northern New Jersery
    1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    4D SUV
    Automatic 6Cy (I think, maybe 8)
    4WD
    78,500 miles
Khaki exterior with dark grey leather interior
Has all the options of the day, auto/power everything, sunroof, cd/tape it was a limited
Exterior has two minor scrapes taht I've just been too lazy to paint
Tires are about 1 year old, brakes were just replaced, done everything the dealer suggested- about $6000 in the last year
Check engine light went on this week, and car not driving great since, not sure whether to just trade-in and move on or bring to dealer to fix-

    any suggestions or thoughts?
  • jakejjakej Member Posts: 13
Yes....Carfax says they have four records. While I didn't see them, I'm sure they are from the accidents. I'm actually very happy with the truck, and didn't think I could get what I owed in a trade anyway. I'm sure it took a huge hit in value, even though it still looks and still runs like brand new.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
With running issues and cosmetic issues, prob $3-4000 wholesale
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    05 Escape, probably around $11,000.

KBB is sometimes optimistic regarding trade in values.
We have seen it where KBB trade in is higher than KBB wholesale book!
The absolute best way to find out what your car is REALLY worht is to contact a Ford dealer, speak to the used car manager and ask him for a "buy bid". Tell him you want to sell him your car, and prepare to be amazed.
Or. if you have a Carmax store nearby, get a bid from them.
But don't just rely on online info, because alot of it is inaccurate.

    here we go.

Looking to trade in a 2003 Red Tiburon GT w/ 6 speed, moonroof, and ABS. By the time I actually go in to the dealer to trade it will have about 59,500 miles on it.

Just a couple small chips in the paint, but a crack in the windshield.

If you can give me what you would expect the trade to be I would be very appreciative.

Thanks! I'll try to be strong when I read the results :)

Trying to find out what my truck is worth. A few months after I bought it my job changed and now I'm driving almost 100 miles a day. Need something that is more comfortable on highway and better fuel economy.

    Syracuse, NY
    2004 Chevy Colorado LS
    Crew Cab
    3.5L 5cylinder engine, auto transmission
    Z71 4x4 Offroad package
    52,000 miles (highway)
Sunburst Orange exterior, dark grey cloth interior
Alloy wheels, power sunroof, Alpine stereo system w/ satellite radio and Alpine speakers, Chrome Tubular sidesteps, bed liner, tonneau cover, keyless entry, power windows, power locks
    Condition:
Excellent - a few minor chips from road rocks, not very noticable unless you get up close. No rust on body, very few spots of surface rust starting on undercarriage. Interior has no tears and only a few minor surface scratches near door handles.
Tires are new Goodyear Fortera Silent Armor tires, 70,000 mile treadlife. Have been on the truck for 6 months, about 9,000 miles.
Brakes are in good condition. Almost all miles are on highway
Oil changed every 3000 miles, tires rotated every 6,000 miles. Fuel filter recently changed. Never needed any other maintenance or repairs.
Only owner, no accidents, repairs or body work done to this vehicle. Extended warranty through Warranty Direct covers vehicle to 148,000 miles and is transferrable to new owner.

This is not now, nor is it going to be my car, but I need a value on the following:

    Louisville, Kentucky
    2005 Nissan Altima 2.5S
    4-door
    FWD 4-cyl. automatic
    33,000 miles
    Silver / Grey
SALVAGE TITLE. Has 2.5SL badging and 17" alloys from a 3.5SE model, but it is actually a 2.5S or possibly a 2.5 base. Crummy body and paint work all around with lots of varying gaps. Looks like the whole car was repainted (poorly). Bolts holding doors and fenders on are rusted from having the paint stripped off of them. One dent or two still showing. Has new tires. I am told it tracks straight with no vibrations--but that could be on account of the new tires. Front passenger power lock doesn't work.

What would a car like this bring at an auction? In the alternative, what percentage of "clean" book value would be an approximation of that number?
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
figure half of low book, maybe less it it looks really hideous.
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,272
Thanks! I was figuring $5k-ish. It looks okay from 50 feet, but get up close and you can tell something is rotten.

Looking for a real-world trade-in value for the following minivan- I am in the market for another DGC soon....

    Worcester, MA
    1999 Grand Caravan SE
    FWD
    107,000 miles
    Light green
    Interior nice, not rips etc.
    Exterior average, dented sliding door.
    Tires, Brakes: average
    Maintenance: Oil every 3000 miles
    Air conditioning: weak

Thanks for any info you might have.
  • dkuhajdadkuhajda Member Posts: 487
    That is an easy one.
$2000 trade side is about all the money on a minivan that if the A/C were good, and no dents, would look at $4-5K dealer retail side.

We do lots of those less than perfect DGCs at the BHPH and get them all day long at and around $2K-2.5K at 5-7 years old, 100K+, not quite the prettiest ones and maybe a minor mechanical thing or two.

The condensor coils are known issues on that vehicle, a mere $1200 at the dealer should fix the A/C. The dent will need to be seen at a body shop to determine the value hit that will bring. Take any trade offer that goes over $2000 ACV.

It's spring on Long Island - about 30 miles east of NYC - & my wife just ordered a new Lexus ES 350. What can we get for her current ride?

    1999 Lexus ES 300
    Mileage: 86.5K
Exterior color: light green-grey (I forget what Lexus called this color. Sage, maybe?)
    Interior color: taupe leather
    Options: in-dash CD changer
    vehicle stability control
heated leather seats w/driver side memory
    sunroof
Exterior condition: no hits, no accidents, no repaints. Car has 8-10 of the usual suburban parking lot nicks. Paint shows no signs of fading & shines up nicely. Overall, somewhat better than average for a car of this age & mileage.
Interior condition: Outside driver's seat bolster shows signs of wear: scratches in leather. Otherwise, interior is clean. No French fry attacks or fruit fly infestations. Smokers can't ride in our cars.
Tires: all 4 were replaced in early 2004 - about 25K miles ago. Recently, our mechanic found that the front 2 were badly worn. He realigned the front & replaced those tires. As you'd expect with a front-driver, the rear tires, which don't do much work, have most of their tread life in front of them.
Mechanical issues: none. All major systems (A/C, etc.) are performing to spec. Everything works.
We're looking for a private sale value. A relative has expressed interest in buying the car.

    Thanks for your help.

It might be spring there, but we have another little tropical storm rolling around here ......

It's a 99 Lexus ES300 with that funky yukky sage color - and low miles (for the year) .... Lexus is the only car company that can make a pukey color and "still" get away with it .....

    Good description - tanks.!

Okay ..... worn drivers seat, no smoke, no calamities at K-mart, no Popeyes chicken in the trunk, kinda newish rubber things, we've been doin' the service routine and no Maaco ....... if it's really nice, and it shows and handles like 50k .. then trade side, in and around the low/mid $8's, could "maybe" find a dealer to wander into the $9ish figure ......

Down Retail Rd....? .... $11,900 *asking* and let someone pull my nose hairs out at $11/$11,5 ..... it depends on how close you and the "relative" are ..l.o.l..

Good luck and let me know what happens .....

Don't remember if I told you this or not but I sold my MINI.

I had offers for 20,500 but ended up selling it to a family member for a good bit less so I could buy it back later if I wanted.

I guess I would have let it go for 20,500 if I could not have kept the car in the family.

REPOST from back aways but dealer still has car, and I'm still looking!

2WD, thought i had all the info

    Here is my original post:
I'm looking at a 2003 Element EX, 2 wd, 5 speed handshaker, dark blue with 24500 miles, vin 5J6YH17573L018771. Is located in a suburb of St louis in a Honda dealer's inventory. Carfax shows 2 owners (with the second 1 being the current dealer?). Also, shows as being an auction vehicle, one private owner but auctioned as a fleet vehicle? ? Can anyone explain?
Anyway, looks and drives well. Is CPO'd. What do you think the dealer has in it and what would be a fair offer? It has been at dealer for about 2 months and when I went to look at it, it had a dead battery from sitting....
    Thanks in advance!

    .. **Terry - welcome back.

    Here's one for my Dad:
    02 CRV EX
South of Boston - almost Cape Cod
No Sale Blue / black cloth
    Automatic
    AWD
    Usual EX goodies
75K - lots of highway between Cape Cod and Florida
    Tires about 80%
    Dealer Maintained
Honda step bars, window vents, and roof vent.
One scratch on RR door my Dad touched up.
    Couple of little dings.
Interior better than average - parents getting a little older and don't hover as well as they used to.
Looking to trade on an 06 CRV or maybe wait a few months for the 07.
What say you oh wise sage??
    =================================

    ".. almost Cape Cod .." ....l.o.l.....

We're not getting much help from the color .. and the miles (low for the year) are still creepin' towards 80k ...... if it's clean, rubber is deep and it would only take $200ish to make it right .. then trade side, in and around the tall $11's, might maybe "could" see the low/mid $12's depending on what he is trading on ....

I wouldn't be so concerned about some "special deal" on the 06's .. there is already dealers in the NE (and the SE region) that are "sold out" of their allotments for the 06's, if not, they're darn close by 40/50 days .. and the 07's will see some serious $$ for awhile ...

I'm thinkin' your parents could trade for their CRV and a $12/$13ish *difference* figure ...

    ... let me know .....................!

    And I am.

Dad traded it for a new 06 CRV EX AWD Auto with a bunch of accessories and a dealer trade for $13,700. He could've done better IMHO, but he was happy with the price. They only had a couple left on the lot hence the trade.

Now I just have to convince him that 75K on a Honda isn't a bad thing.

    Thanks again Terry.

What can I expect on a trade in?

    Hi Terry:

I'd greatly appreciate the trade in and if possible, your guess for retail price.

    2003 Nissan Maxima
    44,300 miles
    Gray/Black leather
Options: Besides standard GLE options: Moonroof, Heated Seats/Steering Wheel, BOSE, Leather
Tires- still about 40% tread remaining

Condition: Clean outside- consistent w/ age, a few dings, small scratches, a couple rear bumper "bites" from bad parallel parkers
Inside- Above average to Clean leather condition. Drivers seat has small cracks from time, sun, no tears or rips.

    Thanks very much!

    Hello
I am in the process of looking at a new vehicle, with a couple recent additions to my family I need to get something with more seating capacity than my truck. I did some initial research using Edmunds and KBB and after my first offer from a dealer I also used Galves. All three were in the same price range of around a little over 12k for a truck like mine in good condition. I would rate my truck as at a minimum in good condition. The first dealer I visited came back with 8k - 8.5k. When I told him about my research he stated those sites are not accurate. Does anyone have any idea what I might expect to receive for this vehicle from a dealer in the Boston MA area? If these sites are not accurate, what is? Below are a few more details about the vehicle.
    Thanks for any replies.

Okay - I went to 3 different sources KBB, Edmunds & my credit union, and all of the sources say that my 99 Windstar with 120,000 miles is worth between 2,800-4,500. CarMAX offered me $1700 - I was expecting a low ball from them, but then when I went to the Toyota and Ford dealership they only offered me $200 more? I negotiated a good price according to Edmunds on an 06 Sienna LE with 7,500 miles, $23,200, but they are only offering me $1,800 for my trade. Any Suggestions?
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
There is no way on earth that a 120,000 mile Windstar is worth anywhere near $4500.
    $2-2500 TOPS.
KBB, Edmunds and Credit Unions don't buy cars, so there "data" is sometimes suspect at best.
If you really feel you car is worth that much, my suggestion is to retail it yourself.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,736
$1900 for a 120k mile, 8-year-old Windstall? Sounds like all the money and then some! Grab it! (i know you said $1800 in your last sentence, but you also said $200 more than Carmax's $1700 offer ... so I'm taking a guess at $1900. But $1800 would be good, too, IMHO.)

Honestly, what would YOU pay for such a vehicle? Personally, I'm thinking $2500, but I could see someone in desperate need of a family hauler dumping $3k on it. So if we got a $3k retail vehicle ... $1800 sounds pretty fair on the trade side.

But I'm no pro. Just a guy with an opinion.

If it was in perfect shape with no scratches, new tires great interior and a fresh oil change I doubt it would be worth over 2,000 dollars.

i have a 2004 chevy tahoe that was wrecked i bought it back in january and barely got it a month ago , it took along time to find the parts and the shop told me that it would take 6-8 weeks and it ended up taking 12 but i have advertised it in my local paper a week ago and i put " salvage title" and have not gotten even 1 response, that's right not 1 ! i dont want to take out the salvage because im a very honest person and dont want to waste my time with non-serious buyers. im considering selling it at a local auction where i beleive it will fetch 10% lower than the blue book in fair condition, but there is no guarantee and there is a $250 fee + 5 % and you can only run it 3 times. i have the vehicle priced at $15,900 its the lt,leather,95k miles,onstar,3rd row,z71. has a tear in the cloth on the roof, missing a runnin brd, and has the service engine light on other than that it is in great condition , i just had it fully detailed inside and out, what should i do , pay more on regular advertising like autotrader and edmunds and keep running it in the paper. Run it throught the auction. Try ebay? i need some advice please all advice is welcome

Auction or eBay... Either way, you'll have to disclose the salvage title. I have no idea what you'll get for it, though.

With 95k on a 4wd LT, $16 is about the right wholesale price if it's nice. $18 if it's super clean and Pope Benedict used to own it.

But it isn't and he didn't. The light's on, it's got a SALVAGE title, it's missing stuff and the interior is rough and it's got a SALVAGE title... about 95% of your buyers are running for the exits at this point. Keep in mind that for $16 you can buy a bunch of NEW cars & trucks... with -0- miles... no 4x4 Tahoes, granted, but NICE is expected for this kind of money.

You need a real pro to tell you what it's worth; I only know what I pick up around here, and from buying all kinds of jalopies for a couple decades... but i'm guessing that the car is worth MAYBE $10 if the work was done really well and it wasn't that major to begin with. But that assumes the running board back on -- or both off and looking good -- and the check-engine light off.

Why oh why would anyone buy a high-mileage former wreck with a branded title unless they could absolutely steal it? Ebay is probably your best bet; certainly it should help you educate yourself; plenty of cars with questionable pedigree are on ebay.

.. ** im considering selling it at a local auction
    >>>where i believe it will fetch 10% lower than the blue book in fair condition..**
    ==========================

$15,900....?? ... does that include the Baume Mercier.?

... and I believe I can hit my new driver 325 yards .. (but when they measured my last 15 drives, I only averaged 245 yards) --- so much for what I believe in ..l.o.l...

Like Mathias has mentioned, this ain't no beauty ..... it's got a TON of miles, it's had a major meteorite hit, it lights up like a Christmas tree, it sounds like it's been put back together by Helen Keller, and let's not forget ~ it has a salvage title .... other than that, it's puuuurfect.!

I have no idea what auction you might be going to, but at $15,9 I need to send some stuff there ..l.o.l... .. but any of the ones I've been to, you'd be staring down the barrel of the $8/$9,0 zipcode (depending on where you live and the V8) ...

You might want to spend some $$ and put this dude back together - properly ..l.o.l.. .... then send it down Retail Rd with a full disclosure, a fat daddy detail, a wonderful picture gallery, a superb Ad, all the history on the front seat and bring the price back down to Earth, like $10,900 *asking* and go from there .....

.. **Don't remember if I told you this or not but I sold my MINI.
I had offers for 20,500 but ended up selling it to a family member for a good bit less so I could buy it back later if I wanted.
I guess I would have let it go for 20,500 if I could not have kept the car in the family.
    ===========================

Yes, you did forget to mention this minor little aspect in your life ......

$20,500..? .. sounds about right. I think, I was "thinkin'" $21,900 and cut it from the herd for around that figure .... but you went family side.

I always find it's better to do business with a stone cold stranger than with family .... I'm always waiting for the other shoe to drop ..l.o.l....

hmmm... well... correct me if I'm wrong, but a salvage title means it was totalled by your insurance company, correct? So what did they give you for this little gem when they totalled it? And, good grief, why on earth did you take that money and get it fixed? And what did you pay to get it fixed?

    Hi Terry,

You give great advice here. I wanted to run our Family Truckster by you. We just had our 3rd child, and this vehicle is way too small. 3rd row seat??? My cat couldn't fit back there. Looks like we are heading towards a, oh it kills me to say it, minivan.

    Philly Suburbs
2005 Toyota Highlander base model w/3rd row seat
    v6,awd
    27000 miles
    indigo ink pearl(aka dark blue)
options include daytime running lights, driver power seat, cold weather package, preffered package, alloy wheels, towing prep package.

We'll have to remove the burger king wrappers from under the seats, remove the lovely smell of dried milk ... this baby needs a detail in the worst way. But i think it will clean up nicely, and look like a family of 4(now 5) lived in it. I'll be sitting down when I read your response, so lay it on me. Thanks

... **Dad traded it for a new 06 CRV EX AWD Auto with a bunch of accessories and a dealer trade for $13,700. He could've done better IMHO, but he was happy with the price. They only had a couple left on the lot hence the trade....**
    ==========================

    Tanks for the update .....

hey, those accessories ain't free, he probably got em' for another $300/$400 just to make it "purty" .....

    Nice vehicle .... enjoy.!
