What can I expect from the Acura dealer relative to KBB wholesale? Also, can I get a better price from a Jeep dealer, Carmax or someplace else. I don't want to go the private party route.

NADA says $14,000 trade, Edmunds says $10,900, KBB says $8500. Both dealers I have been to offer $8500. Is that really all there is? I can't help feeling I should get more.

Black is a bad exterior color in most of the southern states because it absorbs more heat than lighter colors. I think that Texas tends to be a big market for Chevy/GMC, Dodge, and Ford trucks, and probably less so for imports.
I traded my 05 tC for an 05 Towncar. Details are below. I'm enjoying the soft ride and the large amount of storage space. Toyo builds a real nice car. But, I just couldn't resist the goodfella. The net was tC + 10K.

Color: Black with tan leather interior (I know--a bad color for the south!)

Defects: 1 Door ding; Same door was repainted due to karge scratch (no body work, just paint).
Car could use a good detail (polish paint, shampoo carpets), but I assume that is something the dealer will do regardless.
I am trading it for a new Jetta TDI. How much can I expect to get for my car? Edmunds TMW says $18,465 but I think that is a bit optimistic.

Practically indestructible, the rear bumper has

scratches. And some girl backed into the side
of it a couple weeks ago and it caused NO

The rest of the story:
The S10 is mine. I've owned it since 2001.
The Accord is currently my sisters and has been in the family since 2001 and, coincidently, we also know the original owner who traded it in to a local dealer. A couple of years ago this car was wrecked. It destroyed the right fender and door (no frame damage) and the insurance company totaled it. And yes it has a salvage title.
It was bought back from the insurance and the fender and bumper were replaced and the door repaired (should have been replaced imo). Then a few months after it was finally fixed, my sister did almost the exact same thing to it except it didnt get the door and it got a piece of the hood. The hood and fender were bent more or less to its original shape but it looks like a crinkled sheet of paper.
She bought a new car last year and has been trying to sell it for $1200 (by word of mouth) but nobody has ever came up with the money. Anyway, she is moving and has to get rid of it.
I plan on going to get it in a week or two and driving it around to decide which one I want to keep.
And welcome back Terry. This thread is exponentially more interesting to read with you around.

Acura (like most Honda dealers) aren't really known for their generous trade values ..... but if I had more information (which I don't) I could tell ya more .........

Exterior condition: no hits, no accidents, no repaints. Car has 8-10 of the usual suburban parking lot nicks. Paint shows no signs of fading & shines up nicely. Overall, somewhat better than average for a car of this age & mileage.
Interior condition: Outside driver's seat bolster shows signs of wear: scratches in leather. Otherwise, interior is clean. No French fry attacks or fruit fly infestations. Smokers can't ride in our cars.
Tires: all 4 were replaced in early 2004 - about 25K miles ago. Recently, our mechanic found that the front 2 were badly worn. He realigned the front & replaced those tires. As you'd expect with a front-driver, the rear tires, which don't do much work, have most of their tread life in front of them.
Mechanical issues: none. All major systems (A/C, etc.) are performing to spec. Everything works.
We're looking for private sale & trade values. A relative has expressed interest in buying the car.

That said, I just saw a PR from GM stating that demand for their new big SUVs (Escalades and Yukon XLs) is higher than they expected. But, they're also already offering rebates on the all new Tahoe. Go figure.
I've got a year old, '05 4Runner. Very nice SUV. But, I'm not even thinking it will bring top dollar if I was in the market for anything else right now.

Both garage-kept cars that look absolutely great-paint is still quite glossy.
2001 Cadillac Catera w/$1,000 optional convience package. sage/shale leather..33,000 miles-not a mark on it.
2001 VW Passat GLS 1.8T/manual shift....no options whatsoever...44,000 miles
anthracite/tan cloth....Again,very pristine exterior..
Assuming it runs/drives well, for sub-1K, the salvage title shouldn't really matter, since it does have the magic H badge on it.
Still sounds like a better option than the S10, unless you need a truck for some reason.

Interior is clean, leather maybe aging a little quick.
Exterior has no real dings or scratches, BUT... minor paint/body work to the RR quarter panel (struck by a large rock), driver's door (to fix a crease at the back lip of it when the wind flung it open against another car), and the rear bumper cover was replaced (got hit by a parking lot hit-and-run artist). All 3 of those repairs in the $500-700 range, but the kicker... I reported the hit-and-run to the police and it shows up on the Carsmack as an accident causing minor damage.
Big spread in the book values... how do you think I'll do trading it on a new Subie? Thanx in advance

The Service Engine Light came back on within 2 days on my '03 Sentra GXE this afternoon. 3 year warranty runs out next Monday. Car is an '03 GXE model with the power pack & the bozo sound option package. Slushbox tranny with just shy of 29k. 4 meaty sneakers and the normal dings on the outside & really clean inside. You gave me a figure of between $8250. and $8900. private sale last week. A guy at work wants to buy it, but am afraid that pesky light will be back after they attempt the 6th fix.
If I do sell to a stranger and the car has been fixed, would I be obligated to inform him or her about the previous warranty service visits? I feel it would be the right thing to do actually. But that might scare away all potential buyers?
Might also pusue the Lemom Law thing here in Florida but have a feeling I'd loose there to.

As for Lemon law, your car may be too old to have a case.
Also, why is the light coming on? Is it for the same thing, or different things?
If the light has been coming on consistently for the same problem, and the dealer has been unable to repair the car, then you may have the beginnings of a case.

All the base SE options and nothing else - Air, CD, alloy wheels sliding rear window, rear jump seats. NO Cruise, PW, PL, Keyless, etc.
Pretty nice shape. Original tires are getting pretty thin, inside of the bed is a bit scratched up from hauling around bikes. Interior is clean as a pin, shows that whole "pride of ownership" thing.
What should I be looking to get this for? The owner thinks it's in "excellent" condition, of course.
Update: he was asking $9800, I was thinking $8500 and he got insulted. Now his asking has dropped to $9300, so he may be getting a bit more practical.

It's a check engine light, not a kidney transplant .. Bimmers are famous for em'.! .. it could be anything from a bad gas cap to a loose wire .. maybe you just need another mek-kanic .... that said, it's a $8,900/$9,500 vehicle on the street all- day-long (properly done) .... Nissan has a record of it, and it should be covered after next Monday with the proper paperwork and history - if needed ...
...tell him the deal and have him right ya a check for $8,700 to get ya off the guilt trip and call it a day ..... :shades:

Condition: Interior - The back seat needs to be replaced. Otherwise all it needs is some TLC and a good detailing.
Exterior - K-Mart parking lot special!!! Bumper dings galore. The paint is a Swirl-O-Matic carwash special. Handwashed/waxed (which covers up the swirl marks somewhat) now that my wife doesn't control it.
Big dent on the right rear quarter panel. It punctured the sheet metal and there is a 2-inch gash.
Tires: 50%
Brakes: Front pads replaced and rotors turned. 1/3 of a mile on the front pads. Rear pads - don't know but the repair guy said they were fine.
Maintenance: All regular maintenance since the car was purchased at 28k miles.

It seems to be some sort of Automotive Law: The people who drive, or want to buy, the cars with the worst reputations, like Hyundais, are invariably the most stubborn about their decision. Must be something akin to the "Stockholm Syndrome".
There was a guy here a few months ago wanting to trade a mint condition newish Accord for a Hyundai--everybody told him he was Nuts......(same guy?).....

Without a close look other than seeing it when I test drove last week, the Subie dealer in FayetteNam wanted to put $10,0 on it... hinted that $10,5 might be allll the money while trying to sell me a new WRX wagon for sticker.
Am I smoking something to be looking for a bigger chunk of change trading this in on a WRX or a Legacy GT?

The Subie dealer is probably a little light.
If the car looks right, meaning the paint work isn't noticeable, the tires aren't unduly worn and its a clean car than its probably @ $11,000 maybe a wee bit more.
On the other hand, if its 2 different colors and the tires are too worn and the bumper cover looks like it was repainted with a roller than your dealer is all over it.

He noticed the paint work... but that's a trained eye! He said that they did a good job with it, but it was evident by the tape lines on the seals around the rear quarter windows (can't pop those out on a Honda. The real bad news is that the incident with the bumper involved a police report, which shows up on the Carsmack as an accident resulting in minor damage.
So the verdict? He says $10,5 is all the money in trade... I was interested in a new Legacy GT that he's $500 over invoice.
I'm not pleased enough with that to do business, but how good or bad of a deal am I getting here? Any experts think I should reconsider?
I'd appreciate any opinions on how well I did on this deal.

But, I think that the dealer is on if the repair work is that noticeable AND its on Carfax.
A bad carfax makes prospective used car buyers nervous.
It does limit what you can ask and get for a used car.
Remember, its the difference figure that matters, not just what you get for your trade. Soemone can show you alot more for your car and just take it out of the discount that available.
