Thanks for the replies. Yes, they are real money. I am getting great prices for 06 markdown minivans. Yes, we have a 6% sales tax so that is an advantage, although one dealer offered me a "courtesy trade" if I sell it privately and want to facilitate it through them for the tax break. Although I haven't researched what's in it for them yet....

I'm slashing the price $1k and seeing what happens. Thanks again.

Well, by returning the car to the Honda dealer you are returning it to Honda Finance.
The $500 sounds like loyalty money to me.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
According to Manheim, wholesale is between $25-26,000
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
If you gave more details about your car--mileage, color, trans, etc. etc. someone here might be able to give you a pretty good idea of what it's worth.

As far as: is there a point in time where I'm better off trading it in before it loses more value?

I'd guess, today would be the best time to trade it in, esp. with a saab. Does it still has any warranty left?

    Hi Folks,

I am trying to figure the fair trade-in value on my 2003 Jeep Liberty. About a year and a half ago it was in an accident and there was severe front end damage ($10000). All has been repaired, and it now looks and drives like new. My question: What allowances, if any, should I make for the trade-in condition/price since my car has been involved in an accident? In other words, how much, if any, is the value reduced?

    Thanks!

  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    $10k is alot of damage.
I would depend on how the car looks to a professional, and whether or not there was frame damage(I'm guessing that front end means there is frame work), and whats on the Carfax.
Probably looking at 1/4 to 1/3 less than the value of an undamaged Liberty with similar miles.

I'm planning to sell my 3-series before winter is over--unfortunately, due to time constraints, I don't think it will happen until late December / early January. I'm going to have to put the snow tires on it. They're mounted on non-OEM wheels which don't look quite as fancy as the OEM wheels. The snow wheels are non-staggered 17" wheels; the summer ones are staggered 17" models.

What protocol do I need to follow when I try to trade it? Wait for a sunny and dry day, switch the summer tires back, and then go make a deal? Or just drive it to a dealer with the snow shoes on it, and explain that I have the OEM summer wheels and tires available if they want them, they're in good condition, and have 7/32" of tread remaining? If I did that, they'd have to take my word for it, and go to the trouble of switching them out if they wanted them...
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
If you let the dealer know you have the wheels and tires, that should be enough.
The trade deal would be contingent on producing those wheels and tires.

Thanks for the info--I've never had that situation come up before.
  • british_roverbritish_rover Member Posts: 8,502
I just did it myself on a couple of different cars recently. That value we put on the car is contigent on the factory wheels being brought in at tradein.
  • akanglakangl Member Posts: 3,282
Thanks for the info--I've never had that situation come up before.

I traded my Titan in July with bald snow tires on it. However, I included a set of good tread summer tires (no rims). The dealer was happy with that and didn't lower the trade value due to bald tires.
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
Do you want to keep the snows & sell them separately? That's what I'd do if trading in to a dealer, & then sell them on fee-bay or wherever.

What about taking pics of the stock wheels so the dealer can see they're not trashed? I'm sure the dealer can make a deal contingent on your producing the OEM rims--this shouldn't be a huge deal if you're local to the dealer. I once traded in a car in S. FL, with the back seat missing, then had to send the seat to them via UPS, from Mass.......(long story).....

I've got a 2004 Civic LX, and I'm trying to estimate the current trade-in and/or wholesale value of the car. The specs:

    Location: SF Bay Area
2004 Honda Civic LX sedan (4 door)
    Transmission: Automatic
    Driveline: 2WD
    Mileage: 30,453
    Color: Black (exterior), Gray (interior)
Condition: Excellent, no dings/scratches, regularly maintained, no accidents

    Thanks!
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,272
You figured out my plan... I'm not giving them both sets of wheels, unless they're willing to pay for them! Good idea about taking the pictures. Now would be a good time--they're still on the car, and somewhat clean because I ran it through the car wash yesterday.

I do plan to sell the snows on eBay--they're just basic five-spoke Mille Miglia wheels, but the tires show very little wear (4,000 miles) and they're runflats. Should be good for a few hundred bucks.

    Hi,

I am looking for some idea of what I should look for trade in or if I am to sell this call on the market. It has about 41500 miles, great condition, Sun roof, leather, (EX-Leather Package), Original Tires (3/16th of wear before used up), one accident back in 04 and it was repaired fine and works great, new brakes in 06, 4cyl-auto, Minneapolis, MN area.

    Thanks

If you haven't already, go to the Edmund's section which lets you appraise your car. I did that. Took the TMV of the car. Added $100 to the asking price; and ended up with multiple offers. I got my full asking price.

Detail your car. Make it shine like new. Advertise in your local Pennysaver if you see a lot of car ads there. You can usually put a picture on line too with some of the newspapers/Pennysavers.

Good luck. Let us know how you make out. Selling by yourself, though anxiety producing, is way better than giving the dealer another way to make money off of you.
I've always found, ask a fair price, and you'll sell your car.
  • easye2easye2 Member Posts: 26
Thanks for your response. I guess I am new at this so I am having trouble understanding your first paragraph. What do you mean you ended up with multiple offers and you got your full asking price???

    Thanks
  • easye2easye2 Member Posts: 26
Oh, one more thing I forgot. I have a hondacare extended warranty for 7yr/100K. It can transfer to the next owner. Do I throw that in my add or am I better off getting a pro-rated refund for the unused time.

    Thanks
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,272
I'd take the refund on the warranty and not mention it to the buyer.
  • easye2easye2 Member Posts: 26
Okay, thanks. That's what I thought. What about the "offers" question referring to carteach's comments? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
  • robr2robr2 Member Posts: 8,805
He meant that multiple people offered to buy the car.
  • dtownfbdtownfb Member Posts: 2,918
He had more than one person offer him full asking price for the car. He sold his Honda on his own instead of trading it in.

Regarding the warranty, I would find out how much you will get back from Honda. That warranty could sweeten the deal and allow you to ask for several hundred dollars more. Knowing it is a factory warranty that will cover major parts up to 100k will set your Honda apart from others.

    Something to think about.

Would someone please give me the Trade Value for the following auto. Thank you.

    Year/Make/Model: 2004 VW Passat GLS 1.8T Manual (no 4-motion)

    Mileage: approx. 30,ooo
    Color: Silver
    Major Options: Leather
    Condition:
good, a few minor door dents, no chipped paint
    Tires - new
    Brakes - original to car
Maintenance - done by VW dealer every 5K miles
    Other: No accidents
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
Regarding the warranty, I would find out how much you will get back from Honda.

I'd echo dtownfb's comments re: the warranty. And add: If you're getting $400 or so back on the warranty from Honda, it might be hard to get that much more for the car. If you'd get, say, $200--$300 back, it might be worth it to offer it with the car.

What about advertising the car as: "Ext Honda Warranty avail."? And try to make $100 more than your warranty refund by selling it with the car. At least one person is gonna go bonkers over your car (if it's nice) with the ext. warranty, I predict.....

    Hey folks,

Looking to buy a new car in the near future....and was wondering if any of you in the "know" could help me with valuing my car. I live near Albany, NY (zip 12202)

2000 Acura Integra GS (Leather, Spoiler)
    Automatic Transmission
    Approx. 82,000 miles
Couple of minor dents, paint in very good condition

History....I believe I am the 3rd or 4th owner of the vehicle, and I remember the carfax claimed it was in an accident early on in its life (less than 1000 miles on her). From what I can tell, there is no evidence of the accident whatsoever.

I'm looking to get around $6000, is this unreasonable? NADA gives me $7800, and blue book lists $5700-$6300 in good-excellent condition. I see dealers around me sell these all the time for around 9-11K, but I have no idea what they go for at auction.

    Thanks a bunch.

Which TMV did cartech take? Private Party and added $100 to it? It gives three TMVs. Sorry for asking so many questions, but I have not sold a car myself before and am tired about feeling terrible about trading my car it. Life's to short to feel like crap when you get a different car.

    Thanks again.
  • dj_quaaludesdj_quaaludes Member Posts: 4
Oh yeah...just to add....im in need of trade-in values, as I don't want to deal with the hassle of selling private party.
  • robbiegrobbieg Member Posts: 350
I am not the expert so I can't give you the value but your car is probably not in good to excellent condition. The reason for this is the accident and minor dents. Since it is an Acura you could probably get way more money if you sold it yourself.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
$6000 is possible if the car is really nice.
Although, if ther accident is on the carfax that could knock you down to $4000 depending on what the wording is on the carfax.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,735
hmmm... since nobody else asked, maybe it doesn't make a difference to the trade-in value ... but just in case, you may want to state if its a sedan or coupe.

Tell me about it, I have never seen a car in this area,Washington D.C. take such a beating. I will probably wait to Spring. Car is perfect and one dealer offered 26K and I told him it was an insult. I am not going to give it away. And no 10 K won't do it unless that is your down payment:)
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,735
    darn.

    well, i had to try.

You may be quite disappointed in the trade value. We'll see. I know it was very recently that a dealer on another board (i can't remember, but i think it was the sales frontline stories board) took a Z4 in trade for about $20k. VERY low miles. I believe it was an '04 or '05 with automatic trans. I'll see if I can find that discussion.

Ah. It was an '03. still, low miles, a 3.0, leather, etc.

well I knew it was you, of course. :)

so what would you hit beamerman's at? It's a year newer, but its a stick and has higher miles. He is a tad farther south than you, too, but it still snows in DC.

Although you should be careful. I'm thinking, if $26k was an insult, your answer may flat out cause a war.

Car is perfect and one dealer offered 26K and I told him it was an insult

    Let's see, winter's coming up, & you've got a 3 y.o. Z4 that cost you what? $36K new? But you're "insulted" at an offer of $26K?

These things are not rare, they're not scarce, nobody "needs" one, the Z4 has "controversial" styling, & FWIW, an offer of $26K on a 3 y.o. car that listed for maybe $40K new is not "giving it away". ($26k is, how much more than zero?).....Oh right, $26K more.....
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
    *Z4s are painful property*

I am curious as to why that is so. Here's my guess: 1. you can buy a brand new Miata for the price of a 2-3 y.o. Z4. 2. Guys with $$ to blow are gonna choose a Vette, or Boxster, or 911 (911 being much more expensive of course) instead. 3. A bmw 3-series convert. is just as Cool, but more practical.

And 4. of course, this is a toy, that no-one "needs". A guy wanting a toy can put it off to next year, or buy an E-24 bmw with more "street cred", or an E36 M3, or build a new garage. And then there's all those M-B convert's that may appeal to women more (?)......
  • british_roverbritish_rover Member Posts: 8,502
We put 20K real auction money on that car and then stretched to 21K to to the deal then squeaked out of the car retail for 23K. That car had less then 8,000 miles on it but was a year older. It was the perfect color for a Z4, Silver with black leather premium package, and was an automatic which is unfortunately preferable to the manual Z4 as far as the market is concerned.

After expenses we made ZERO money on that car so 26K is very strong money for that car even down south by DC.

My guess they were over allowing a fair amount to hit get to 26K.

We don't do over allowance on trades.
