according to my sister, her mechanic said that it was just a slight leak. i am not too familiar with all the doodads and such under the hood, so im not sure if its even worth selling, or fixing then selling - or whatnot. i guess i need to get some advice for her, because she's really not car literate at all! what would work best in this situation?
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Well, Its a $500 car as is.
Head gasket leaks are never "slight".
Left unfixed thay always get worse.
Maybe someone would pay you $1000 for it, but that is probably all.

Thinking of either trading this vehicle on bmw 528xi or infiniti m35x OR getting extended warranty and waiting for something more exciting to come along.
    Indianapolis, Indiana
    2004 X5
    3.0 liter, AT
    AWD
    25000 miles
white ext, tan leather with dark wood trim
premium, cold weather and rear climate pkgs, park distance control, moonroof (no xenons or Nav)
1 or 2 parking lot dings, drivers front bumper airbrushed after scrape in parking lot incident. Paint intact and shiny. Interior needs cleaned - to be detailed - no french fry invasions. Seats hovered in.
tires have 25k miles - michelins
maintenance - all bmw factory + mobil one each 5k miles or 6 months

    What is a realistic trade?
It's paid for. Should I keep it and get an extended warranty (checking on pricing now) or get something new?
I did test a audi Q7 V6 - very heavy vehicle - not my cup of tea.

It sounds sweet--I'd buy it, if I weren't 1000 miles away (& could afford it!). A Super low-miles paid-for 3 y.o. X5--I'd think long & hard before trading it. According to CR, not that much is going wrong with X5's 2003 & up. You might not even need the ext. warranty (esp. if it's real expensive), altho I hate to tell people Not to buy one on such an expensive vehicle.

You might also ask for opinions on some of the X5 & 5 series boards (both edmunds, & others).....

    just my 2 cents, woody

Can't tell you what you should do.
However, trade on the X5 should be in the $31k neighborhood.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Sounds like a typical mommy mobile, not in the best of condition.
Trade in should be @ $9000, less any recon.
  • achenatorachenator Member Posts: 128
    How about private sale??
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Private sale is just too hard to judge on any car.
There simply isn't any real objective data.
In most cases, you should be able to sell a car privately for $2-4000 more than trade depending on the car.
In the Honda's case, prob closer to 2 than 4.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    Agreed.

We were offered $500 for a car that we later privately sold for $1500.

Some times dealers just don't want to hassle with wholesaling out an older car that they can't put on their used car lot.

I'm guessing someone thought they were buying a collector's item.

I had no idea those things sold for that kind of money when they were new. They weren't worth a hell of a lot then, and they're worth a lot less now. . .I think.

I'd certainly be interested in hearing what this thing sells for. . .and who paid it.

I'm just wondering what exactly is a "good deal" for a trade in. KBB says my car's trade in value is $12,250. The best a dealer has offered thus far is $10,500. How close to KBB is considered good and how far is considered a rip off?

Tell us what we've got, use the template provided on this page, and give us a good description of the car. Don't worry about being too verbose.

Once a car is a few years old, it's all in the condition. And the books never change the value enough for mileage.

Car dealers and wholesalers HATE high mileage to a degree that continues to surprise me.

I want to trade the car in at BMW. They're telling me, without knowing the condition, that they use Galves Book and that it says it's worth $15,800. That seems low to me. What's the real value, and how to I negotiate this with them?

    THanks,
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Well, thats about 10 grand too much
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    We don't "hate" anything.
High mileage cars are just alot harder to sell, and so are worth less than people think.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
KBB is a guesstimate and as such should never be taken seriously.
Sometimes they guess close and sometimes they don't.

Don't know what kind of car you have, but if you are within a couple grand of Kelly, thats close enough for Gov't work.
  • steine13steine13 Member Posts: 2,825
    Thanks for the description.
It's eight years old -- to a car dealer, anyway. How could a book tell you or anyone what it's worth??? I'm surprised it's as close as you say.

Here are some auction results, sorted by miles; I threw out the "above" and "below" cars and only left the one in "Avg" average condition:

    04/13/07 DALLAS Regular $10,800 63,178 Avg SILVER 6G A Yes
    04/12/07 DFW Regular $11,300 68,659 Avg BLUE 6G A Yes
    04/12/07 FRDKBURG Lease $10,000 68,676 Avg WHITE 6G A Yes
    03/28/07 NEWBRGH Regular $10,600 69,611 Avg Silver 6G A Yes
    03/22/07 CHICAGO Regular $10,500 73,213 Avg BLACK 6G A Yes

It's amazing to me how close together these cars are, btw. This gives you an idea what the dealer should pay you IF he sells it from his own lot. If he doesn't, but takes it to auction, he has to pay for transport ($200), auction fee ($250), reconditioning, if any, and he wants to have some bolster, too, just in case the auction is a little slow that day.

By offering you $10,500, he's giving you all the money for your ML.. must be a nice one.

Where KBB gets their numbers is a mystery to me.

    -Mathias
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Well, looks like $10,500 to $11,000 should be the range.
No way the car will bring $12500 in real money.
  • steine13steine13 Member Posts: 2,825
    We don't "hate" anything.

Well, ok. But you-all penalize for high mileage, and really appreciate cars with tiny miles.

There is a misconception that car dealers "make" used-car prices. They are the ones that decide what to pay at the auction, that's true of course.

But it's based on the dealer's experience of what they can sell the car for, in other words, what the customers are willing to pay.

And since the customers are almost all rank amateurs, it's no surprise that some of the values don't make a lot of sense.

    -Mathias
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Well, thats probably close to the real value.

Judging by Manheim, I'd say $15,500-16000.
  • tfinantfinan Member Posts: 13
Thanks, your number was very accurate. I was offered $6500 and $7000 at two dealers.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Everything we do is based on what we feel we can retail a car for.
Based on past experience in the market.
Customers don't like hi mile cars, and because there are usually plenty of low mile cars available, they won't pay close to the same money.
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
I'm curious, because I always figured that dealers don't "really" pay up for very low mileage cars. And to really capitalize on a low-mileage fairly desirable car, one needs to sell it privately.

At least, that's been my experience selling a few low-mileage "cream-puffs": dealers wouldn't offer any more than wholesale, & then I sold them thru newspaper ads for.....probably 30% more than the highest dealer offer, & it took somewhere between a day & 2 weeks.

The dealers really wouldn't even acknowledge that my, or my ex's, cars had low miles, or were any more desirable. But the newspaper-ad buyers went nuts.

    Just my 2 cents, woody

2nd white over tan with tech pkg. Very good shape. no cpo.

Parents leased an '07 Volvo S40 2.4i today for my mom, and while shopping my dad saw a used '04 S60 R AWD sitting on their lot. Trying to get a rough idea of what he should potentially offer on it, as apparently they are looking to cut it loose since they've had it a while. Here are the details....

    2004 Volvo S60 R AWD
    Silver
    Black Leather Interior
    6spd Manual
    39,215 miles
All available volvo options, including Bluetooth Cellular upgrade from the dealer
    Volvo Certified 6years/100,000 miles.
    Philly Metro Area

Dealer sticker in the windows says 27,995 which I know is WAY to high for that car, but the manager said if he was seriously interested they would cut him a deal. What would be a good offer for it?

    Thanks!

If you're trading it to a dealer, they can probably buy tires cheaper than you can. And no guarantee you'd get as much extra for the car as the amount you'd pay for tires yourself. (an amateur opinion)

Tires are okay in front, but studded snows in the rear, and th studs are worn down really far, probably need 4 new tires.

Well, it depends on how desireable the car is in the first place.
If its just some run of the mill car, no you are proably not going to see more money just because of low miles.
If its a luxury or specialty car, yes you will.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Car as is is probably a $19-20,000 car.

Tires don't cost that much,so you aren't likely to see an increase in the trade value for new tires.
The leather scratch is a problem though.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    A 2001 w/ 19,000 miles?
this is a case where you are better off selling thte truck privately.
Even w/ the low miles a dealer will probably only give you $11-13000 tops for the truck.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    W/ the A/C inop, about $3-4000.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    Ordinarily, I'd say low $20's.
However CPO cars, esp an R cost some money to recon and warranty.
So, the dealer is probably thinking mid $20's.
    Say $23-25,000.
  • 28firefighter28firefighter Member Posts: 9,819
    Thanks volvomax!

23,500 is right where I was thinking for that car. In my mind at 23,5 that car is a steal for what you get. I'll let you know if my dad ends up pulling the trigger...it'd make us a virtually all volvo family again.

that CarMax gave me way too much for my used car?

I'm in Houston, Texas. It's a blue 2000 Ford Taurus SE 4 door, grey interior, 102,500 miles. I think really the only option on it is Alloy wheels.

The interior is in perfect condition except for needing a good upholstery cleaning. The exterior paint is in great condition, but there are some door dings and the one biggie - a fender is damaged and needs to be replaced.

The tires are pretty new - less than a year old. The brakes were replaced about 15,000 miles ago, but I think they did a crap job because they feel like they need replacing again.

The maintenance was well kept up. The only major repair it needed was a new alternator (6 months ago). It just seems like it's needing a new $100 repair every two weeks.

It has the Taurus radio defect. The windshield wiper clear pump smokes when you try to use it. The engine light keeps coming on and off along with a smell of burning rubber and white smoke from the engine.

Am I the only one that thinks that $2,000 was an incredibly generous price for this car?
  • jbolltjbollt Member Posts: 736
I am NOT an expert, but I do know that it all depends on what you paid for the car you bought from them. If your trade was realy worth $500, and they gave you $2000, you probably paid $1500 more for the "new" car. They could have given you $500 for trade, and sold you the new car for $1500 less. Same deal.
  • sk8ermaidensk8ermaiden Member Posts: 20
Should have clarified - I didn't buy anything from CarMax - just sold them my used one.

    Thanks!
  • jbolltjbollt Member Posts: 736
Ok, sorry, but you mentioned "CarMax gave me way too much for my trade..."

Now, I will step back and let the pros respond...
  • sk8ermaidensk8ermaiden Member Posts: 20
 You are absolutely right. Noted and changed.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Oddly enough, when you look at the auction values in Dallas, there were a bunch of Tauruses(Taurii?) that went for @ $2000 w/ over 100k on them.
Looks like the were fleet leases of some sort.
So, when you look at that, it looks like you got the right money.
Now, a dealer would probably have given you a grand, because of the cars condition.
Personally, I think the guys at Carfax stepped on their you-know-what.
