We're planning to move coasts in a few months and I'm considering selling off one paid off car to make it easier. Trading it off to Carmax might be easier as we can do it 'last minute' but obviously we'd get more selling it PP. Any thoughts on current auction values? Car is completely paid off, so no worries there.

    Southern California/Inland Empire
    2007 Toyota Yaris
    3 Dr. Hatchback/MANUAL Transmission
    Bayou Blue
    "Convenience Package: AM/FM/CD with .
MP3/WMA Playback Capability and Auxiliary ..
Audio Jack, 15-in. Steel Wheels with Full ..
Covers, Rear Wiper and Rear Defroster
    Carpeted Floor Mats/Cargo Mat "

KBB/NADA put it at around 9500-10K tradein value, which seems rather high to me, considering we only paid 11K+ tax almost two years ago.

Car has new tires, brakes probably are getting close to replacement but not complaining yet. No body damage or accidents. 23K miles (it was purchased 7/06). Non-smoking, all maintenance done at the proper intervals.

That Buckles (a small town multi-line GM store) gave more for your RL than an Acura dealer would seems almost unbelievable. But, hey, glad it worked out for you.

Back in '83 or so Buckles pioneered (at least in Ohio) selling (almost everything) for $49 over invoice.

trade in is prob soemwhere in the $18's.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Well, this is a case where KBB/NADA is correct.
Trade in would be in the $9-10k range.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Hmm, I haven't had ggod luck guessing on Scooby Do's.
I would say trade in in the mid teens, say $14-15k
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
And I'd sell it before too many people see the 2009s. They'll want a new one instead.

    2WD or 4WD?
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Prob a $14k car at the auction.
  • redkey1redkey1 Member Posts: 270
seriously? That is 3-7k under Edmunds/KBB/NADA

So call up one of those companies and tell them to buy the car for their price. ;b

Seriously, though, go back and read the most recent discussion out of the countless similar discussions that have transpired in the 34 thousand posts on this board.

Look at it this way ... let's take the middle number of what the books propose: $19k. I can go to the bmw store right now and get a CPO 2004 330i with all the goodies and only 25k miles for $24k. That means they had to buy the car at auction for $20-$21k. Is it at all possible that a 330i with half the miles of that 325i is ONLY $2k more?? Heck no. $19k MIGHT be a decent retail number on that 325i ... it certainly ain't no trade-in number.

If I was buying it from my brother-in-law, $17k would be more than fair. What did automax offer?

    '11 GMC Sierra 1500; '98 Alfa 156 2.0TS; '08 Maser QP; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '11 Mini Cooper S

  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
seriously? That is 3-7k under Edmunds/KBB/NADA

If you have spent any time on this board, you know that KBB/NADA have zero bearing on what used cars are really worth.

On a GOOD day,the average bimmer is more than $3 grand back of KBB on a trade.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Should bring $8k at the auction.
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
No sport pckg? Xenons? And high-ish miles--no favor to lux cars like bmw's. If you really want it, I'd study the comments of other posters here. And possibly go with your BIL to automax, & (maybe!) offer $1-$1.5K more.

PS-ALL miles are (highway) miles according to owners, & ads......no car since 1900 has ever had all "city miles", for some reason ???......
  • redkey1redkey1 Member Posts: 270
I apologize, that was more of a rhetorical - I know the guides are just that.

Thanks for the 17k suggestion, the problem is I think they are relying on KBB....and don't want to argue, but know that in reality automax won't come near any of those prices.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,736
    no need to apologize.

Well, I think the post above yours is probably a good idea, then. Go with them to automax. Once they get hit with a real-world offer, you are there with your checkbook to save the day. :)

    '11 GMC Sierra 1500; '98 Alfa 156 2.0TS; '08 Maser QP; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '11 Mini Cooper S

  • redkey1redkey1 Member Posts: 270
Problem is that they are in DC and I am in Boston. I know they babied it, so figure if I can get it at close to trade it is a good deal. That said, sounds like from here it may not be such a great deal unless I can get it sub-17k. My father-in-law mentioned he thinks he (my BIL, his son) wants 18k.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Well, keep in mind that you wouldn't get a CPO car from BMW for $17,000 let alone $14,000.
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
I don't think anyone asked: does it have the Premium Pckg? And Leather? I'd find that out before going ahead. But $17-$18K for a nice CPO '04 3 series sounds totally reasonable to me......you might love it.......

    Hi all,

Just looking for a trade-in value for:
    2004 Honda Accord EX-L
    4 dr. Sedan
    V6
    Good condition
Leather, and all the goodies except Nav
    54,000 mi

    I'm in South Jersey. Thanks!
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    Should be a $12-13000 car.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,336
Have a line on a car for my son. It belongs to a co worker that will be getting a new one.

So, how about a trade estimate, and a reasonable private party number?

    In NJ (Phila. burbs)

1999 Accord LX. White with tan cloth.
    4 cyl, Automatic
    95,000 miles.
Normal LX stuff (AC, hub caps)
Looks nice and clean, 1 owner, assume it doesn't need anything major. No body damage that I know of.

Assuming it runs like it should and there are no surprises, what would be reasonable to expect on this baby?

2020 Acura RDX tech SH-AWD, 2023 Maverick hybrid Lariat luxury package.

  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Car would be between $3-4,000 on a trade.

Private party could be $6-7,000, depending on how nice it really is.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,336
I was figuring about that on the trade. Not sure, but I think this might be a case of just having to pay them the trade value + tax savings bump, since I don't think they are interested in selling it privately to a stranger.

oh, come on. you're backing away from getting a stick for your son? Blasphemy!

    '11 GMC Sierra 1500; '98 Alfa 156 2.0TS; '08 Maser QP; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '11 Mini Cooper S

  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,336
His idea, not mine. He wasn't confrotable after our 1 lesson, so he wants to get more time in on the easy driving skills (you know, like staying on the road and not hitting things) before going back to the stick.

Hopefully before June when he gets his license (potentially) he will have enough hours under his belt to try the stick again. If it works out, we could still go that way.

But, if I find the right deal with an AT, we can start with that one.

I have the above listed truck. I'm looking for a reasonable price for it.
It's a Regular Cab long bed with the 5.8 windsor. 138000 miles. The only rust spot is above the driver's side rear wheel. Never been wrecked an runs good. I'm looking to sell it or trade it for a 91 or 92 5.0 mustang. Thanx for the help.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Well, the truck has no real value to a dealer.
If its in good shape it could be worth a couple grand to a private party.

    5k miles
    white exterior/ tan interior
    excellent condition

assigned to a job that requires more than 2k miles per month. gas is killing me as well as i feel that i'm just wasting the car value with the mileage i'm using. thinking of getting a used reliable car for work right now. also if i trade this in for a lesser value car...how does that work? thanks!
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    I'd sell it privately.
Its gotta be worth a couple grand to a private buyer.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Well, the only cars to go over the block were factory cars w/ an average of 400 miles.
The went for an average of $27,500, so you will probably be below that.
I'm sure there isn't any book value for anyone to go on, so it will be worth whatever a Honda dealer says it will be.

What do you owe on the car?

Sentra is prob worth $2-3000 on a trade.

If you work at the dealer where the Legacy is, go talk to the Sales Manager and see what you can work out.

thanks volvomax! its been paid off. do you happen to know if i can trade this in for a cheaper car? thanks again!
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
You can do whatever you want.

A dealer will just cut you a check for whatever the difference is between the value of your car and the price of theirs.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
What are they asking for the car?
  • briegelbriegel Member Posts: 139
They have two of them on their website, each at $45,995.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Well, they are probably in the cars somewhere between $38-39,000, including the certification and recon.
Lexus dealers are good at holding gross, so low $40's is probably your best bet.
