No wonder Ford had such huge losses. That's crazy. Aveo money for a mid-size with a V6.

Just read Ford is giving employess a $1000 bonus.

I have to confess that we did not believe the friend who told us this. Then, he showed up with the sales invoice and proved it.

Occasionally, I see a deal that makes me shake my head and ask why. Last week's deal was a 2008 Toyota Matrix auto trans new for $14.8k (Elgin Toyota, Northwest Herald, NW suburbs of Chicago). When I was in the market last year, the price was $16-17.

juice - remember these were fleet only vehicles and Ford really wasn't too concerned about resale value on them.

They just needed to keep the facility building them running until they closed it. Ford probably made money on those fleet only Taurus' because the overhead costs on an old model are low and unlike in the past, Ford wasn't taking those cars back from a captive customer. The rental company owned them and it's their loss when selling them.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    All good points.

Just makes you wonder about eroding the value of the Ford brand, though, when you see used 2007s for under $10 grand.

Then again, they're still selling the ancient Ranger and an outdated Focus here, so why should we be surprised?

I'm looking to purchase a 2007 VW GTI in Seattle, WA

    Base model 2 door

Dealer is asking $19,400. Any help determining the actual value of this vehicle is much appreciated.

    Looking for trade-in value:

    Seattle, WA
    2001 Subaru Forester L AWD
    88,000 miles
    Dark blue, gray cloth seats
    4 cylinder
    auto trans
cd changer, premium sound, factory alarm
super clean inside (no kids/pets) and out
needs tires and rear wheel bearing replaced
no paintwork or accidents, no dents/dings, only minor rock chips on hood

    Thanks for your help :)
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I would suggest fixing the rear wheel bearings before selling it. They make an odd noise that could be mistaken for a more serious driveline issue, like the diff or the AWD system.

It's not too hard even to DIY.

    hey vmax,
What say you for trade-in value on this:
    '04 S60R 6-spd 54k miles

It says nothing of heated seats and I can see it has no moonroof.

EDIT: huh. maybe that one is overpriced, huh? I just found a CPO one the same color, but only has 30k miles, has moonroof, heated seats, laminated side windows, and a rear-seat entertainment system. Priced $22,995. So .... would you be so kind as to provide values on both of these?

    THANKS!

    '11 GMC Sierra 1500; '98 Alfa 156 2.0TS; '08 Maser QP; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '11 Mini Cooper S

    How about this one?

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290211738862

It has 45k miles, heated seats + moonroof, and you could definitely have it at or under $17k.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    Avg auction price for a 50k S60R is @ $15,000
A CPO car requires a lot of recon, avg bill is @ $2000 plus the warranty.

I'm looking at a PP deal here (I'm buyer). What's the fair range so I know where to start my offer but also know where to end.

64K miles, automatic, moonroof, prw doors/windows. Good condition. State is NH.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,736
    thanks for the effort, danbone.
But, man, that's gotta be the worst color combo I've seen .... or at least the most boring.

    Thanks, max.

So... I'm guessing then that the lower mile one with more options might be in the $17k range. Add the CPO and maybe possibly I should be able to pick one up for around $21k? Give or take a nickel.

Wow, it's been forever since I've posted. Terry's MIA?

Anyway, girlfriend's looking at dumping her Hyundai and getting into an XC90.

    The Hyundai:

2001 Sonata GLS, Black on tan
Roof, auto, alloys, CD player, etc. Pretty loaded for an '01 Hyundai.
107k miles. Really good condition, non smoker, no stains, good exterior, fastidious about maintenance...obviously looking to sell outright.

What'ya think a "right price" would be?

    She's looking at:

2004 XC90, blue over charcoal leather
T5 AWD, 7 passenger, no nav, 41k miles, at a local used Euro-only lot.
Currently priced at 21,950, and it's been there forever (I actually looked at the same unit over the summer!)

I think the price is fair, any possibility of wiggle room on it? Thanks! As a Volvo guy, what're your thoughts on the T5 XC90s in general?
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238

    Probably more like $22,000+

    Welcome back Lancer,

The Hyundai would probably bring $2k on a trade, so @ $4k private party sounds right.

As for the Volvo, the price on it is pretty good.
If they have had the car as long as you say, they are losing money to sell it now.
The fact that they have hung on to it this long means that they probably aren't amenable to any more dealing on it. But, you never know.
Offer them $21k and see what happens.
If the car doesn't come with a warranty, make sure you buy one.
The XC90 2.5T is a good car. But, like any Volvo, repairs are more expensive than on a mass market car. You might just want to pay a little more and get a CPO car from a Volvo dealer.

2006 Dodge Ram 3500 DRW SLT
    Quad Cab (4-dr)
    5.9L 6-cyl cummins
    6-spd manual
    4WD
    41k miles
    Red/Grey
no real major options, it has power windows/locks/driver's side seat, power tow mirrors, cruise, a/c, single cd player, just your basic run of the mill SLT really

Interior is in good shape, non smoker, seat covers on seats since it was new

Exterior is in very good shape, has a couple touched up rock chips, no dings or major scratches. Inside of the bed is in excellent shape, has a bedliner, also bed rail caps. Its not a truck that's seen heavy use, just pulled trailers.

Never been in any sort of accident or had any body work.

Has 2 sets of tires, both at least 80% tread. Brakes are 90%. All maintenance is up to date, has synthetic oil. Always well taken care of, one owner truck.

What would be a good private party price? It has a transferable 6 yr/100k ESC as well. What do you think a dealer would give if we just sold it to them? Not looking to trade it in on anything.

    Thanks!
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Depending on where you are, trade in would be between $26-28000

    I'm guessing private party at @ $30,000

Here in New England, I'm seeing on craigslist private party sales that most people are asking KBB private party price. For cars in the 5 to 6K range, is it reasonable to keep shopping till someone will take about 15% below KBB pp retail?

Sellers don't seem to want to come down to much on price, but I just started looking the last couple days. Want to make sure I'm not being unreasonable here with 15% below.
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
You've put your finger on the number one reason why some cheaper vehicles don't sell - high prices. I've been following craigslist listings closely for more than a year now and it is astonishing how many cars are overpriced, especially those with higher mileage. And you're right, many folks will peg their price to KBB.

My general thought is that if you're going to utilize price guide numbers for privately offered vehicles is to treat the PP value as the absolute maximum you should pay. There are, of course, many exceptions. For instance, the SUV market is in the toilet yet private sellers continue to price their vehicles as though gas was still $2.00 per gallon.

On the subject of negotiating - our family has been involved in 4 successful craigslist transactions in the past year. Here's the asking and selling prices:

    1) '95 Nissan Maxima (selling) - asked $1750 (it had hail and body damage) - sold for $1500 in 3 hours in mid-January 2007.

    2) '98 Toyota 4Runner Limited (buying) - initially asked $9765 (WAY high) - bought for $7000 after price reduced to $7000 in November.

    3) '91 Toyota MR2 (selling) - asked $4200 - sold for $4000 in 2 days at Christmas after failing to sell in the summer - go figure.

    4) '99 Nissan Maxima SE (selling) - asked $4200 (it had high mileage) - sold for $3600 in 2 weeks in early January.

Don't be afraid to offer low. Sellers' circumstances vary. When you see something that's repeatedly advertised, the time may be ripe for a favorable selling price, regardless of the advertised asking number.

Are you making offers over the phone?

If I'm selling a car, I'm not cutting my price until you come look at the car and make an offer.. People who make offers without driving/seeing the vehicle aren't considered serious buyers..

If you go check out a car that's listed for $6000, and it's been for sale for at least a week, I'd be stunned if they wouldn't take $5500...

Maybe it's more to do with my specific trade-in but, I am having a difficult time getting out of my 07 Dodge Durango. Edmunds says it's worth, at a minimum trade-in value, $18K. KBB says $13500. Black book says $16K - tops. It retails for $21500. I owe about $21500 so I can;t seel it privately, unless I want to pay off the difference on the note in cash - ain't happening.

Are there any dealers buying for edmunds trade-in or is just because of my particular vehicle. I had a fight with one guy because he said I wanted "retail" (which wasn't true) for my trade but wanted to pay wholesale for a new vehicle. And my response was "what's your point"??!! Of course that's what I want! I'm not interested in him making money on me.
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
Those who publish the "books" don't buy vehicles and dealers (generally) use auction figures.

Selling any late model vehicle privately is usually pretty tough. Moving a late model SUV right now is damn near impossible unless you can afford to give it away. The spread on the book numbers indicates just how unsettled the market is.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Dealers, like anyone else, don't want to overpay for a car or truck.
Just because edmunds says a vehicle is worth X dollars, doesn't make it so.

Dealers are in business to make money. So, they have to buy cars where the wholesale market values them and sell them for retail money.

Certain cars are worth more to dealers, because they are worth more to consumers.
A Dodge Durango doesn't fall into that category.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    Good Luck!
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    $2-3,000 on a trade.

    Prob $3-5,000 retail.
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
I find that buying or selling cars, or real estate, is like playing craps. The market can totally change in 5 minutes, or 2 months, & then you may have missed a great deal (either buying or selling).

But: PRICING is key, duh. As are the ads, description, pics, records, etc. But, if you take the $2000 offer, someone will show up an hour later & offer $2200. If you don't take the $2K offer, you'll take a month or 2 to sell it & be lucky to get $1700.

    It's a Jungle Out There......!

    Hey, Lance...welcome back!

Man, I would be SO careful about that Volvo. They can be nothing but BIG and constant trouble.

This comes from a guy who used to love them but the newer ones just aren't the same.
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
Jolie is back too! Like old home week.

    Still buying and selling huh?
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
" I'm not interested in him making money on me"

Well...that's kinda the reason that dealer went into business in the first place.

Durangos are and have always been very soft in the market as used cars and now with gas at 3.50 a gallon, these are very difficult.

Also, you are competing against new 2008's that have HUGE incentives going on right now.

Probably best to just keep it for the time being if you can.
  • akanglakangl Member Posts: 3,282

Not really, just have to move some things along so we can start down the path to homeownership in a real civilized area, lol.

We've had that Ram for almost 2 years, I'm still driving the Pilot we bought in July........Love it!! I'm seriously stuck on Honda now, no issues in 18k miles.

Would you like some cheese with your whine? From what I've read, prices for gas guzzling SUVs like your Durango, are all over the place.

Looked at one yesterday, this would be private party transaction. What would be a good price range for me to buy at.

    Location: New England
    2003 Mazda Protege LX
    50K miles
    Options beyond LX trim package:
    Automatic
    Color: Black
New tires all around 1 month ago.
    Brakes maybe 1 yr ago.
    No accidents, 1 owner.
Body is in good condition, some scratches, alloys a bit chewed up by curbside parking scrapes.
Test drove it and it runs good so I'm going to make offer. Asking price is 7200.

Engine compartment looks clean (for a 2003). I have a 2003 accord and it looks clean too. Funny thing is I looked at a 2003 Hyundai Elantra saturday, the engine compartment looked 3 yrs older than the mazda and honda.. this is as far as rust/corrision goes. Must be they use cheaper materials.
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
In the current market, the asking price (or anything less) is a buy price, especially given the low mileage.
  • lancerfixerlancerfixer Member Posts: 1,284
    Hey, Isell!

I know they CAN be trouble. I also know they CAN be great...remember I've owned two (and will be replacing the Saab, which most definitely can be and is trouble) with another.

I dunno, I'm of two minds on this one. She wants a car-basedSUV (as you know SUVs are not my bag, at all, but if there's one out there I'd be comfortable with someone I care about in, it's the XC90) and I know Volvos CAN be persnickety. By the same token, if she were to have a bad accident, I can't think of another vehicle besides maybe an S Class or an M1A2 I'd rather she be in. (It'd be a damn sight better than the Hyundai in that regard, anyway.)

I don't even think she's made up her mind about it yet...

My wife and I are looking at a 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT

Location: Fort Dodge, IA (my location is Belmond, IA)
Year/Make/Model: 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT
    Body Style: 5-door minivan
    Engine: 3.8L V6
    Driveline: Front Wheel Drive
    Mileage: 16,700
Color: Inferno Red / Grey Interior
    Major Options:

Rear Air and Heat, Power Driver's Seat, Power Left and Right Sliding Doors, Power Liftgate, Power Sunroof, Remote Entry, Overhead Console with Trip Computer, AM/FM Cassette and CD with CD/DVD Changer and Rear Video Entertainment System Rear Window Defroster, Wiper and Washer, Luggage Rack, Eligible for Service Contract, Remainder of 3 Year/36,000 Mile Basic Warranty Applies, Remainder of 7 Year/70,000 Mile Limited Powertrain Warranty Available with $150 Transfer Fee

Condition: good (was smoked in, though)
    Other:

I read on JD Power today that 2006 GC's were expected to have a 37% residual value...even on the high-end models.

    http://www.jdpower.com/autos/reviews/review.aspx?ID=247

    Putting in a figure of $38,000 * 37% I came up with $14,060 for a residual value.

This doesn't really jive with retail prices that I've been finding:
    KBB = $19,000
    Edmunds = $15,300
    NADA = $18,700

Now, trade in is much closer to that 37%, though:
    KBB = $14,700
    Edmunds = $12,300
    NADA = $15,900

If we decide to make an offer, any advice on where to start?
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Last May I was minivan shopping and you could find SXTs with a few more miles (usually around 20-30k) for $15k all day long. And that was nearly a year ago, so values have only dropped.

The low miles and DVD player add some value, but that it was smoked in would cross it off my list immediately. In fact for me, shopping for a family car, that alone would change the condition from Good to Poor, because both me and my son have asthma.

Honestly I think Edmunds is the closest by far.

Offer no more than $15k and only after they have that interior detailed to address the smoking.

Or shop around. I also saw a brand new leftover 2006 SXT early last year for sale for just $20,600. You can add an aftermarket DVD player for $600-900 and get a bigger screen. $18-19k for a used 2005 is crazy high.

If you want AWD, top crash ratings, bulletproof reliability and car-based SUV, you should think Subaru Outback.
  • lancerfixerlancerfixer Member Posts: 1,284
7 passenger capability is a requirement, longislander1. Otherwise, yeah...Outback would have been among my first recommendations.

    (edited for typo)
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
What are they asking, or did I miss that? And soon you'll have only the Limited Powertrain Warranty left--which doesn't cover suspension, brakes, heat/AC, all of which seem troublesome on these.

The books/online prices are just loose guides. Also, what could you get a new one for, w/full warranty? (you may need it with a Chrysler).......
