Looking for trade in value for 2003 Acura TL - Type S with Navigation
    Mileage: 87,000
    Color: Silver with Black Leather
Condition: An average condition car for it's age, paint has good gloss, two door dings on the side, some rock chips on the hood. One repaired rock chip on the windshield, interior shows some wear. Tires at about 50%. Car cleans up very well.

Other: Front and rear bumpers were repainted to repair scratches. No other body work. New transmission put in at 75,000 miles under Acura transmission recall.

    Thanks in advance.

    $8-9,000 sounds about right.

Thanks. That is about what I thought.

I saw an 04 530i w/sport package and 6MT on craigslist. The mileage was not listed but the price was $17,400. Are MT equipped cars that bad on resale?
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,735
    The mileage was not listed

    Well, there is your answer.

The manual does take a $1200 hit, however, at trade time.

Hello Terry and crew...you've been very helpful to me in the past, and I was happily surprised to see that you're still doing this for Edmunds' users. Hoping you can provide some trade-in/private party numbers for me.

    Location: Phoenix, AZ
    Year/Make/Model: 1998 Honda Accord EX
    Body Style: Sedan
    Engine: 4 cyl, automatic
    Mileage: 82000

    Color: No-sale Green, Tan cloth
Major Options: Alloys, sunroof, cd player, windows, locks

    Condition:
    Interior is clean
Tires - 80% remaining, all match
    Brakes - 90% remaining
Maintenance - needs timing belt, probably new hoses

Other: from A-pillar back, paint is flaking badly from roof, top of trunk/C-pillars showing similar wear, starting to show on upper surface of rear fenders and door skins, and seems to be a common problem for '98s with that green color. From A-pillar forward, paint better because of very mild front-end collison (wife backed into the car in the driveway, don't ask), hood/bumper repaint with blend to fenders (I don't think it's on CarFax). Also has a reman transmission installed at 45k due to internal defect.

Thanks very much for your help!
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Hate to say it, but it doesn't sound like a nice car.

Car would probably bring $2-3,000 on a trade.
Probably not much more than $4000 retail.
Miles are low, but cosmetically, it doesn't sound good.
However, right now people are going nuts for economical cars.
You MIGHT find somebody to pay $5,000, if they have bad eyesight. :P
  • beechmanbeechman Member Posts: 36
Thanks for the info...it sounds more hoopty-ish than it looks, but was trying to be truthful/realistic in its condition. If it weren't for the paint, I'd be more inclined to hang onto it. I was thinking of asking mid-4s or so retail, so I wasn't too far off, I guess. Maybe I can find some kid who wants to mod it up and repaint, never know.

Thanks again for the info, I appreciate it!

    Hello,

I am actually crazy enough to be considering buying a V8 SUV right now, and want to get an idea on realistic values since they seem to be dropping like rocks. This will be a second vehicle for me, only putting about 5,000 miles a year on it so the gas doesn't freak me out too much.

What I'm in the market for is a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4x4, V8. I had leased one new in '99 and loved it. I'm looking at "low" mileage examples, mostly between 65k and 75k. They all have leather, moonroof, cd changer, etc., are in good clean condition, and at dealers. I am looking at silver and black ones with no accident history, clean carfax, etc. No warranties or certification due to age.

Most are asking $7,000-$8,500 which strikes me as high. What do you folks think a realistic transaction price might be, seeing how the SUV market is now? I am located in eastern PA for what it's worth.

    Thanks!
  • sebring95sebring95 Member Posts: 3,241
Well I'd say look around and maybe hunt up a good private party. My wife had a '99 Ltd before her GX470 and in some ways she misses the Jeep. Put 180k basically trouble-free miles on it and sold it to a relative. About two months ago, I had some friends with an '00 V8 Ltd. absolutely loaded with 90k miles and they were being offered $4,000 on trade. I gave them $4,500 for it and stuck an employee in it that's being doing some work for a mining company and needs to get around off-road. Pretty hard to find a ten year old rig with only 65k miles....so maybe the can command a little more. I'd rather buy something that's been driving at least average. I'll take highway miles over city miles anyday.

Loaded LT (sticker around $47K) with 13K miles. Dealer asking $31K. Any thoughts? I wonder what price this unit went through the auction at? If it wasn't a trade-in that is.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,735
    Really, vmax? $15k?
Is that the Cali market talking? (meaning a non-snow market)
    My NJ source says $18k.

You are missing a good bit of info. Moonroof? DVD? Nav? chrome wheels? 4x4? The options can make up to a $6500 swing on this truck at trade time.

You left out one very important answer ... miles :)

Look at the bottom of the page for the info you should provide. The more you provide, the better estimate you'll get.

$25k-$25,500 is about the trade-in zip code.
In this market, they'd probably be happy to drop it on you for $27k-$28k. Or at least they SHOULD be.

Real nice rig. Just make sure you can afford to feed it! ;)

Pretty much loaded with all available options. (Airbags, DVD, etc)

Well that's awfully vague of you. ;P
Is that like the ads I see where they say "loaded" and then I find out they meant "except moonroof, navigation, leather, etc"?

Nav is the big deal on these, apparently. My source tells me $25k-$26k with NAV and a big $1400 deduction without it.

d'oh missed the first one then. My bad.
  • kgabekgabe Member Posts: 25
Thank you. Feeding it is no problem for this truck would be my second vehicle. The other is a 6-banger old Thunderbird. Still runs like a stallion. It's a great looking truck for sure and I too thought $31K on a 13K m 07' was too high. This market won't allow those prices. Even though oil has dropped here (down another $4 today) off of $147 high things have changed forever in the auto world. Ford just announced today it's shuffling its production plans into smaller cars. 3 more truck plants being converted over. Times have never changed so drastically in such a short period of time in the auto world.

I was at the auction in Riverside last week.
The panic button got pushed on the XC90.
Banks have a TON of them coming back on lease over the next few months.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    $6-7,000
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Probably somewhere in the $8-9,000 range.
Should be worth more but the gas panic has finally hit the mid size SUV's.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Times have never changed so drastically in such a short period of time in the auto world.

Actually, this is exactly what the Big 3 went through in the 70's.
This time though, it's affecting every automaker.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    Miles are low.
    Could see $5,000+ on trade.
    Figure $7-8,000 private party.
  • peetertpeetert Member Posts: 124
So this is then a good time to buy? I finally emailed the dealer today about setting up an appointment to look at an '05 2.5T that I've had my eye on. They've already had it a couple of month and haven't dropped the price on it.

    Peeter
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    Well, here's the problem.
A couple of months ago XC90's were worth more.
So, that dealer is unlikely to drop the price a whole lot because he can't.
Not unless he wants to take a loss.
The only other thing they can do is buy some more used XC90's and average down the inventory.
Still, I'd see what that dealers bottom line is.
Personally, I think the XC90's, esp the 5 cyl ones, are WAYYYY undervalued right now.
As the prices drop, people will talk themselves into one and forget the price of gas, because the price is so good on the car.
So far, we have sold 3 used XC90's this month.
  • kathy3420kathy3420 Member Posts: 3
    gbrozen,
Thanks for the reply. In this case I meant every available option...NAV, DVD, Side Airbags, Running boards, roof rack, hitch, 18" wheels, floor mats.

I do understand your meaning though about the *LOADED* simply meaning standard equipment for that trim level.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,735
    Ouch.
Well, good thing we like ours. :(

Honestly, at 21 mpg, I don't see what there is to panic about. Not like we can explain that at the auctions, though. Hell, we've been getting the same mileage in our XC90 running on mid-grade gas as we've been getting in my G35X running on premium. Go figure.

Thank Volvomax. I'll see how low they go. Also, since the original plans were September anyway, unless I can get my price, or close to it, I'm content to wait and see. As for gas mileage, well we kinda gave up on that based on the type of vehicle we are looking at.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Well, people are like sheep in a lot of respects.
For what it is, the XC90 gets pretty good gas mileage.
However, the media and everyone else has discovered that SUV's USE MORE GAS!
    Oh the humanity! :D
  • m6userm6user Member Posts: 3,181
Thanks. I was hoping for $9 or $10K but totally understand the fear in the market right now. Don't know if it's going to get better any time soon even with oil prices dropping a little as of late.
  • mattandimattandi Member Posts: 588
    thanks v-max

I told him the low miles was a bonus, just bad timing on selling a used SUV.

    Hi

Looking at the above car. It is black on black, leather, dvd, cd changer, alloy wheels with 22,500 miles on it. Looks to be in very good condition.

Wondering what a dealer might accept for it? & what the wholesale value might be.

Any help is appreciated. This is in the flemington nj/pa area.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,735
OH... what the heck, I'm bored.

(I'll add moonroof to all for the helluva it. if it doesn't have it, subtract $500)
    XLT = ~$19k
    Eddie Bauer = ~$21k
    Limited = ~$23k

These are trade-in values and can vary ~$500 in either direction depending on condition. Also, given the vehicle in question, it may have dropped $500 in the time it took me to type this out. ;)
And since my magic book missed the recent XC90 by $2k, volvomax may have differing news on this.

What will a dealer accept? That depends on when they purchased and what they have in it. I would say anything more than $2k over the numbers I've given is probably shooting yourself in the foot in this market.

  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
I think you are probably $2-3,000 high for the wholesale.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,735
    I'm not surprised.
    Especially on this beast.

I wonder what dealers here in NJ are doing about this. I mean, these guys have been married to Galves for so long, I think they are probably burying themselves in an SUV per minute without even knowing it.

    Thanks Guys.

I was thinking they could be had for a relatively good price right now. I don't drive much so I not worried about gas just yet, but I need the space.

I've seen one I'm interested in, but his asking price is a bit on the high side (like Blue Book value) alot more than I am willing to pay. Thinking he has more in it than he should.
