Thinking he has more in it than he should.

Well, unfortunately, this is just the way of things right now. He may have paid the "right price" 2 weeks ago, but now is buried neck deep in it.

I think this is going to be a fierce snowball effect. Because of the extremely fast decline, it will make auction prices drop even more as dealers will be afraid to buy anything.

    Hello:

I think it's time to retire my old Forester and also trade in my newer Accord to get one car that can do both things. The forester is old, and I can probably figure its value out, but the Accord is an unknown to me.

The Accord is cherry, I know everybody says that, but this one has seen little use, and is always garaged

    2005 Accord CPE V-6 EX
    Automatic
    Silver with Black Leather
    Facory Navigation
Options that were standard on the EX-6:
    Sunroof
    XM
    PW,PDL,Sunroof
    Dual-Zone Climate, etc
    20K miles
Condition = VG+->Excellent, and I say that with confidence, I mostly drove my other cars
    SF Bay Area (location)
Bone stock except for upgraded speakers and a separate amp (tastefully done, just to solve the poor factory radio problem).
    Honda Extended Warranty 7years/100K

It's a great car, I just need something with 4 doors, room for a big dog, and maybe a bit more engaging to drive. I'm thinking of trading it for a 06-07 Acura RDX (how are those doing?)

Chances are, a dealer is gonna ask Blue Book retail.
    Thats what its there for.
You can always make an offer. ;)
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Accord could see $14,000, maybe a little more.
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
At some point, paying $5K-ish (assuming someone could buy one at the low end of your range) for a 10 y.o. 4-Runner or grand cherokee with 70K miles could make a lot of sense. Even with $4 gas. Even to buy one as a 2nd/4wd/winter/spare vehicle.

I wonder more about buying a more recent used SUV in the $25-$30K range, even if it seems like a real bargain. If or when gas prices go even higher, well......the panic trend could worsen.......
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,270
The aftermarket audio won't get you any extra at trade-in time. If you still have the factory components, you can probably net an easy few hundred $$$ by reinstalling them and putting the aftermarket stuff on eBay.

I am working on a deal right now for a 2005 Volvo XC 90. This is the V8, AWD model. It has DVD, Nav, Premium package, moon roof. 36k miles. Volvo Certified. They had this vehicle listed at $32,900 (way over-valued IMO) and I've worked them down to $27,800. I still think I'm leaving money on the table. Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

    Thanks in advance!

    Hello All

I want to sell my Ford Escort and buy a Honda Fit

    I am in Baltimore, MD
    1999 Ford Escort ZX2
    2 door
    Automatic
    FWD
    200,056 miles
    Black exterior/Tan interior
    Performance Wheels
    AM/FM/Tape player
Some dings and scratches and a large dent in the top of the hood where it slid under an SUV
Replaced the front tires last year
    Brakes replaced last year
    New timing belt
Air conditioner recently re charged and working
    Vacuum hose replaced this month
    No major accidents

I am hoping to get at least $500 for it
  • sebring95sebring95 Member Posts: 3,241
    I'd ask $1,200.

OT: what's the draw to the Fit? The Civic seems to have much better gas mileage, more room....and has a trunk to maybe help next time you're run over by an SUV......

    You're right.
Your initial investment is very low. Plus, these vehicles are typically need vehicles, not want vehicles.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Well, it depends on how long they have had the car.
Prices have dropped at the auctions only in the last 30 days or so.
Even if they have had the car for a couple months, there still should be another grand or two.
  • amethisteamethiste Member Posts: 28
The Fit Sport AT has all the bells and whistles of a Civic EX but costs roughly $3,000 less

OT: what's the draw to the Fit? The Civic seems to have much better gas mileage, more room....and has a trunk to maybe help next time you're run over by an SUV......

    Hmmmm...
    1. Fit=27/33mpg; Civic=25/36. "Much better"? I don't see it.
    2. Fit=40.6" front head room, 41.9" front leg room, 21.3ft3 luggage room; Civic=37.8" fhr, 42.6" flr, 11.5ft3 luggage. "More room"? Nope.
    3. Not sure why you think a trunk will stop an SUV better than a hatch. As a matter of fact, an SUV could drive right up over a trunk and land on the passenger compartment. The hatch will prevent that.

And, as the OP said, the Fit is even cheaper. Honestly, I don't see the draw to a Civic anymore.

I honestly don't see the draw to either and I owned an '07 Civic for a few months..but the Fit felt like a tighter "fit" when I sat in one. Numbers aren't always the entire story, but you probably CAN get more luggage in the fit. Smaller and lighter with a 3mpg penalty. You'd rather be a backseat passenger in the fit? Sounds revolutionary! I'd keep the Escort if $3,000 is a deal breaker.
  • mattandimattandi Member Posts: 588
    ditto

The used SUV market is growing more attractive if one has a need, and buyers keep their wits about it.
  • amethisteamethiste Member Posts: 28
The Escort is expensive to keep on the road. I have had to have it towed to the mechanic twice this month for a total of 5 times this year. I need reliable transportation. I am afraid I may get stranded with no way home with my current vehicle. Regarding the Fit vs. Civic: Why pay more money if you don't have to? The Fit is 5 star safety rated. Has more safety features than my Escort. It is also much easier to park as I live downtown.

I'm kinda lost on this one. You've appraised it before for me, and I see what Galves tells me .... but what could I expect in cold hard cash from a Honda dealer. I don't want to trade, just want to sell it to them.

    '06 Accord EX-L V6 6-speed. No Nav. 30,300 miles
    Silver over black
Tires are maybe 40%. No runs, hits, or errors. Very clean. I can't even find a scratch or chip or ding to speak of, if you can believe it.
This is in NJ, of course.

Sooo... I could be wrong, but I would think this is better than could be found at auction (are auction cars even cleaned?). What do you think?

I was hoping someone could give me a realistic trade number based on auction for the following car:

    Buffalo NY (14043)
2007 Subaru Impreza WRX Ltd (not the STi Ltd, regular WRX ltd)
    4 door sedan
    2.5L turbo 4 cyl, 5 speed manual
    AWD
    15,000 miles
    Grey/Grey
heated leather seats, climate control, sunroof, spoiler
Interior near perfect. Couple minor scratches, leather on driver seat not cracked, but a bit sagged.
Exterior very good. Couple stone chips on front, one door ding on side. Otherwise like new.
    Tires, probably 50%
    Brakes ok
    All regular maintenance done.
    No prior damage, claims, repairs.

Would it be too much to expect to get in the $19K-$20K range on this? I have been trying private party sale, had one offer which fell thru at $20K, and not many other bites even with list price a couple thousand under blue book.

    Thanks!
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
EX auto's are bringing $18-18.5k at the auction.

Figure at least a grand hit for the 6 speed.

The majority that ran in your neighborhood had less than 30k miles.
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
This might be OT, or not. But to me personally it's a lot-o'-cabbage for a V8 almost 4 y.o. SUV. Volvomax talked about how prices on these have just fallen. If things keep getting worse & worse--as they seem to do almost daily now--what'll it be worth in 60 days, 6 mo., 1 year? Just saying, if you have time to shop, I don't think you have to rush into buying one unless it's an incredible deal........
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
$6,000 is the number that comes to mind.
Hopefully, your accident isn't on the carfax.
However, Honda's have VIN stickers all over the body panels, so if the car has been hit, chances are those stickers are gone(if panels were replaced) or painted over.
That always causes Honda values to drop.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Wholesale is probably in the $17-18k range.
Car's not low mile and its got some cosmetic challenges.
  • bc13bc13 Member Posts: 32
He is asking 29.9K. I will make an offer, but it'll be well south of there.

I'm not sure it makes a difference, but the dealer said he purchased it at a Ford auction (?). Not sure how long he has had it, though. No moonroof, but it seems to be an xlt with just about all the bells and whistles (heavy tow package, electronic folding 3rd row seat, dvd).

    thanks for the info.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,733
    Huh.
So does that mean they've gone up?
Cause the number was $16k not long ago, which is what Galves says, too. Are Hondas sucking up all that SUV money? ;)
Out of curiosity, does the V6 detract from it at this point?

    Could be.
    The auto's are going for $18,500 w/ 25k.
So, if you had an auto it would probably bring @ $18k
Not being a Honda guy, I would think that the 6 speed would drop you a grand.
    It could be $2 grand.
So, worst case, you are exactly where you were.

Out of curiosity, does the V6 detract from it at this point?

I don't think it detracts, but a 4cyl Accord goes for a premium right now.

he leased this for $285 per month (36mo) to tow an ATV he sold, and now it sits in the

  • sebring95sebring95 Member Posts: 3,241
He could try a lease assumption. Throw a couple grand at someone and he could probably get out of it pretty easy. I've assumed leases in the past and if I wasn't buried in my Tundra (bought out the lease last december...ouch) I'd spring for it. Not a big fan base for the Ridge, but if the price is right...........someone will take it.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,733
Unfortunately, Honda Finance doesn't allow lease assumptions. Only in extreme cases like you are leaving the country, health problems, death, etc, but even then, the original leasor remains on the contract as a cosigner and would be responsible should the new owner default.

Tell yer buddy he is stuck. A lease is very rarely (if ever) financially feasible to get out of.

Besides, what would he do with the Jetta? If he's not driving the Ridge, then he obviously didn't need another vehicle. What is the other vehicle that he's driving? Sell THAT one, if possible, and drive the Ridge.

And gas can't be that big of an argument here because the Ridge will get 21 mpg and the Jetta will get ... what? ... 28? At 12k miles per year, that's a whopping ~$550 savings PER YEAR. So that's 10 years before he'll even break even on sucking up all that negative equity.

    Good Morning,

I am looking for a trade-in value for our car. We need to get into something with more utility, less sport, looking to purchase a Suburban/Yukon XL.

    Location: South of Boston
    Body Style: SUV
    Engine: 6 cyl, auto
    Driveline: AWD
    Mileage: 29K
Color: Light green exterior, tan leather inside
Major Options: all standard options, moonroof, heated seats, 3rd row, trailer hitch
    Condition:
Exterior is perfect, hard to find even a tiny scratch. Interior is nice as well, carpet is spotless
Tires - New tires with 1K on them
    Brakes - fine
    Maintenance: all up to date
    Other: nothing else

    Thanks for your time!
  • sebring95sebring95 Member Posts: 3,241
Huh, maybe that's why the Hondas always stagnate on the lease trader sites. I thought it was because they're usually rotten deals.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238

Terry's probably lyin on a beach somewhere laughing at all of us poor slobs still working for a living. :D

  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    29k on an 08?
Does that thing ever stop running? :P

With those miles, you have a $25k truck, maybe.
  • bensmom243bensmom243 Member Posts: 19
Whoops, it is a 2007. Does that change the value? Thanks for the reply!
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    Oddly enough, it really doesn't.
Still a lot of miles for an 07.
    Low mile 07 AWD's are bringing $28k.
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
Sounds like a really nice, new vehicle for $285/mo. And a brand new VW, or maybe most new vehicles, will probably also drop a few $$thou the minute he buys it.....(he's stuck, one way or the other, & may get more stuck if he trades it).

Maybe he should just buy another ATV to tow? ;)
  • me2_1me2_1 Member Posts: 3
You must know of what you speak!

The dealer offered $8,000.00 I'm still not sure if $18,500 is too much for an 05 escalade. Its fully loaded, minus the entertainment package. And I would be going from 17" to 20" wheels I understand the price for 4 new 20's is huge. Any advice? do you think I could better than $18,500?
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Sounds like the dealer is trying.
    Wholesale on an 05 AWD w/ @ 36k is $15-17,000
  • me2_1me2_1 Member Posts: 3
Here's my problem. The dealer gave me the carfax report and the escalade has been in a rear car collison...with moderate damage. I took it to a trusted mechanic and he said it appears everything is fine except the back plastic bumper has been replaced.

It has 57k miles and one of the running boards is slightly dented. Otherwise everything seems ok.

I talked to someone esle yesterday who said he could get me a 05 fully loaded, accident free escalade at a wholesale price of $16k. This guy buys auto at auctions, but it sounds too good to be true that he would sale to me for wholesale. How is he making any money? Thanks for help.

I have a 2006 2WD XC90 with the Premium Package, Versitility Package, Volvo Navigation and Wood Steering Wheel. It currently has 34,000 miles on it. Black with Tan Leather interior. We had new tires put on about 5,000 miles ago (thanks to bad original Pirelli's). The car has normail wear and tear except for a small shopping cart ding and a scratch on one interior door and would look essentially new if detailed.

What should a fair trade-in value be at either a Mazda or Acura dealer in Jacksonville, FL? I am looking at taking a 2008 CX-9 or MDX off their lot.

  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
I'd walk away from anything w/ a bad carfax.
Makes it really difficult when you go to sell or trade.

I do have friends who are wholesalers and buy cars for people.
The drawback is, you really don't have any choice in what you get.
Can't test drive the car or look at colors etc.
You have to know exactly what you want.
  • 4beachbums4beachbums Member Posts: 3
The engine is the 2.5L 5-cyl.

My DH thinks I am nuts for wanting to get rid of it too but, for me, the car is not that comfortable to drive and I am in the car several hours a day (between the seat adjustment and where the right armrest is I can never get comfortable). Also, the Volvo is a very *nice* car but it doesn't have very may bells and whistles and I am something of a button pusher....I had an MDX before and really liked that but not too keen on the look of the new model and even though the CX-9 is not a luxury car it has lots to keep me entertained....
