Hmmm...not a bad idea, but the evil wife wants a new ride and we all know that if mama ain't happy ain't nobody happy.

We are currently trying to choose between the new 08 LC at $59,000. and a practically new 07 LX 470. The LX is certified, has 26K miles, and a price tag of $51,000. Both are offering $15,000. for our trade. Gas prices are a problem on both but she only drives about 7,000. miles per year.

She loves the LX and I am tending toward the LC (new body style, bigger engine). Both have their pros and cons. What say you all?

Any ideas on trade in vs. private?
How much value does the plow add.

Financing or not, doesn't matter...you'll be buried in loss in value. My Tundra and wife's GX470 has lost so much value in the last six months...I feel buried in them. And I'm not even looking to get out of them at the momen. It's not like a stock that has a chance or rebounding..... and $51k seems like all the money in the world. And certified seems like a waste of money for you if you only drive 7k miles a year. Go find a private party sale for $10,000 less.

Is your wife one of those women who wants an SUV because she simply has to ride "up high"? Any chance that you could steer her toward, say, a late-model Lexus LS instead of one of those big ugly trucks?

I'm so grateful that my wife hates big SUVs.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
You know what? It's houdini's money.
If he wants an SUV, so be it.
We all have our own reasons for what we choose to do with our money.

    7,000 miles?

Going by the auction I'd say a trade value of $9-10,000
Don't know what the plow adds.

    Yes 7,000 miles.

    Thanks for your help.

Sure, and if you ask for opinions on how you're spending it......you're gonna get 'em. I don't come here and ask for opinions on something I've already made up my mind about. That's something you do with your wife just so she thinks her opinion counts:) <------that means it's a joke
  • houdini1houdini1 Member Posts: 8,351
You need to learn how to read. I did not ask your opinion as to whether I should buy an SUV but on which of the two SUVs was the better buy. Actually it doesn't matter any more because I already pulled the trigger on the 07 LX.

Oh, and by the way, if gas goes down to 3 bucks a gallon or less that LX stock certainly will go up. ;)

Always good to get some appreciation from the OP for a lot of sincerely given advice here (?). Also good to know that, with so many Americans struggling to buy gas, pay bills/mortgages, & used SUV's going for pittances, there are those who are still so well off they can go out and pay $60K for a new/almost new V8 SUV that gets 12 mpg.......(for the "evil wife"????).

Hey screw conservation, environmentalism, resale value, financial prudence. You've earned it dude! Rock on, houdini1......

Well I have always been sort of a contrarian. I buy when others are selling and sell when others are buying. Works for me.

Sorry you are having a tough time Woody. Maybe you should stop giving advice to others, get off that computer and go out and earn some dough!! ;)

I didn't give you advice on whether you should buy an SUV. Perhaps you're the one that can't read? I told you exactly what you ask for: The '07 LX is/was overpriced. Buying when others are selling usually spells BARGAIN. But perhaps you're contrary to the point of not being able to capitalize on that situation? Enjoy either way. If gas stabilizes at $3 long enough for that overpriced LX stock to rebound....I'll eat crow and gladly ask for seconds.

What??? Regardless of what happens, the price of your LX will NOT go up. Gas guzzling SUVs that have taken a huge depreciation hit "at best" will hold their value for a short time. But I'm not in the biz, just an educated consumer who thinks he knows too much, so what do I know.

Hindsight is 20/20. All you can do is learn from the market. Or ignore the advice you asked for and not learn anything. I bought my Tundra right so even with the unexpected value drop....it's still fairly average in resale value. The wife's GX470 is 5 years old with 110k miles so it's paid for itself. But the fact that they've lost huge chunks of value in the last six months is painful nonetheless. I think everyone was surprised that the fuel price point in which consumers dump their SUV's in mass numbers was lower than expected. So knowing now that $4 has made SUV's extinct...it would seem like a good time to drive a killer bargain. Or maybe not! ;)

All I can tell you is that you should do a little research, educate yourself and see what 2007 certified LX's are selling for.

Oh, I'm quite educated in the matter. You say you're going to drive it only 7k miles/year. The used '07 already has a 4 year/50k mile basic warranty. So depending on the in-service date it should be covered until August 2010 at the earliest. Powertrain would be good until 2012, which exceeds the CPO warranty anyway. The CPO warranty adds 3 years from today...so you're going to gain at most, one year of basic coverage on a vehicle that likely won't need anything until the miles rack up. Looks like all that marketing paid off......people will pay a premium for almos zero benefit!

    No car's value goes up.
Sooner or later, they are all just scrap metal.
If you enjoy what you drive, and buying it doesn't put a strain on your finances, then who cares?

    Not many AWD's out there.
    Probably trade somewhere between $14-15,000.

LOL, thanks lemmer. Yes, some of those comments were very surprising. You would think that no one ever spends $50,000 on a car or truck. $50,000 is not really that big of a purchase, plus it is a business expense. I love the truck and the bonus is that I also got a great deal. I will probably have to keep it for 3 or 4 years to fully depreciate it.

Concerning all the weird comments, it must be sour grapes because some here can't afford one and have to settle for some little tin can. That is just not my style.. All I can offer them is my sympathy and the wish that they do better in the future.

Thank goodness I have a little more confidence in myself, the economy and this great country of ours than to panic over something like a temporary blip in gas prices. :)

I think it was the snarky comment by the OP towards someone who gave a reasoned opinion on the deal that I thought was "untoward":

You need to learn how to read. I did not ask your opinion as to whether I should buy an SUV but on which of the two SUVs was the better buy.

Maybe it's a bias I have about people who ask for advice on public forumns, then get an attitude if someone gives them advice they don't like (I wasn't the only one urging him not to do it). And maybe 95% of all Americans would have strong opinions right now about the rationality of paying $50-60K for a huge SUV--(& would express them, if asked?).

Now he saying: all the weird comments, it must be sour grapes because some here can't afford one and have to settle for some little tin can. That is just not my style.. All I can offer them is my sympathy

So now he's offering people "his sympathy", if they can't afford a $50K SUV, & "have to settle for some little tin can"....... maybe just throw some alms to us poor people in our rusted out '83 Escorts, as you pass by? Please?

    I say buy-buy-buy!

(omeone needs to pick up this ailing economy) ;)

And this will make you feel much better - I just got back from Brazil and there a Hyundai Veracruz costs R$179900 (Real), or about $115,320 US Dollars.

So you're getting a far superior vehicle for a small portion of what Brazilians have to pay ... for a Hyundai.

We have a 2004 Lancer Ralliart Sedan that we are thinking about selling and upgrading to the new Lancer. What do you guys think its worth here in Western NY (Buffalo)?

Car's interior is excellent and the exterior is probably a bit better than average
    Tires are 80% tread remaining

We are the second owners ( a priest owned it before us - literally a priest)

Lexus LX is very different beast.. its not run-off-the mill SUV. There are certain groups in which LX and LS is very desirable

In fact in this forum there was a post that indicated 1 month old LX was selling for MORE then brand new LX

New LX stays on dealer lot for less the 15 days (In these days of high gas prices) Lexus is RAISING prices on new LX (Go figure)

SOURCE: one or two week old Wall Street Journal (I dont have the link handy)
So Houdini1 is correct DO your research.
