    I was watching the auction of classic cars on SpeedTV last evening. The cars all sold for at least $50,000, though they were all at least 25 years old.

    Not one of them had the original factory paint job. I was thinking how dumb they were . . they should have kept the old original faded, scratched paint job they got from the factory, at least according to you. .

    yeah, you're right. Completely the same thing. Your car is collectible and valuable. You should start on the frame-off resto now.

    By the way, did you happen to catch the '57 stripper model 1-owner ALL ORIGINAL Chevy that fetched more than 3 times what a restored model would have? Yup, repainting classics can hurt, too.

    I would agree with you that if you see a four year old car with a brand new paint job, that raises some serious questions. But for goodness sake, a ten year old car that has baked in the blistering sun of South Florida . . it is not a big deal to repaint the car.

    I would rather have a new paint job than an old faded one . . . and just because a paint job has faded does not mean the car has been in an accident. The only thing it shows is that the car wasn't garaged at work or at home.

    Nuff said.

    Absolutely correct. But a buyer doesn't/can't know it was "just faded." That's the point.

    It applies to accident history, too. For example, carfax shows accident history. Seller says "oh, it just needed the bumper repainted." Hey, that's all well and good and MAY be true, but that doesn't negate the fact that the value is now shot to hell because nobody can know for sure that's all that was repaired.

    Having sold more 10 yr old cars then you have,it is a big deal.
    Especially if a dealer is seling it.
    People don't believe dealers anyway. if you go onto a lot and see a repainted 10 yr old Honda,are YOU going to believe the salesman if he says "Oh,the paint was just faded".
    Your gonna be thinking Bull$h!t and then come here and scream that the dealer was trying to rip you off.
    Some cars just HAVE to be sold privately. No big deal.
    I hope you get your money. Just don't bang on people for trying to tell it like it is.

    So I wanted to pick your brains...

    2007 "Graphite Pearl" Honda Accord EX 5 speed manual 4 cylinder sedan w/ 24,000 miles. I honestly think that is all the description you guys need given how Hondas are marketed. but for completeness...

    EX = ABS, moonroof, cruise, p windows,p locks,p mirrors, partial power seat (height is powered...fore-aft is a towel bar), bunch of crash pillows. Alloy wheels.
    It has a maintenance minder that tells me when to change the oil, its gone off 3 times, serviced at the dealer. Tires rotated once. I would say they are in the 80% range (straight highway shot to work and back).

    12k miles and 15 months left on warranty.

    Got "$6800" for it on Friday, but my guess is I got hosed somewhere else in the deal, probably on the purchase on the other side. Ended trading for 2008 Toyota Camry Hybrid w/lthr & 20,800 miles, purchase price of $19,600. After misc fees, sales taxes, etc. got OTD for just a hair under $14k.

    Salesman accepted my first counteroffer, and manager didn't even make an appearance. My guess is I paid too much. :cry:

    Actually,I think you did pretty well on your purchase.I think it was a terrific deal.
    An 08 Camry hybrid for 20k with trade of 6000 -- I think u should be really very happy.Great deal.
    Probably the salesman was cautious not to lowball you and lose a deal .Thats why he accepted your counteroffer!!!

    I asked about a year and a half ago for a value on my Escape Hybrid, but ended up holding on to it until now....wondering if I could get an update since the market has changed so much.

    Washington DC area
    2006 Escape Hybrid AWD
    48,500 miles
    Light Green exterior/Gray interior
    Base model with safety package (extra airbags) and appearance package
    Tires will need to be replaced soon, otherwise in good condition (no dings/dents)

    I have gotten quotes of $10.5K-11.5K for a trade and a quote for $12.5K from Carmax. I'm trying to sell private party for $15.9K, but in the few days its been listed I haven't gotten any bites. I'm wondering if my price is unreasonable, or if there are just no buyers because of Easter/Spring Break week.

    Miles are kinda high. Half the battery warranty is used up. That's what may be scaring people.

    Not to mention gas is still free (almost).

    Why trade a car in like that when you can always net $1000-$3000 more by selling it private party? Some of the amounts that dealers offer customers are downright insulting . . yet half the customers accept it anyway.

    Selling an 07 is much more difficult than selling an older car.
    Most buyers don't have the cash,so they have to get a loan.
    Do YOU want to tie up a car waiting for someone to get approved?
    Plus, you are competing w/ dealers that car offer certified warranties and special financing.
    Frankly,most people don't want to take the time to sell their own cars.
    It could take a month or two to sell an 07. You have to advertise,take a bunch of calls from lowballers,have people you don't know come over and drive your car.
    Finally, most states offer a tax credit on the trade in amount. So, you would need to sell your car for even MORE to make up for that. Not easy these days.

    Car should still bring $10-11,000 on a trade.
    I'd say $13-14k private party.
    If you don't get any nibbles,I'd lower your price.

    Hi Everyone!!!!
    Looking to purchase a 2004/Acura/RL w/65k on the odometer. Location is Lancaster PA. No scratches, repaint, dings, clean car fax, 1 owner, black on black, w/navigation, newer tires, car has been gone over by the dealer and checked out ok. Of course it's auto, 6 cyl, yada yada yada. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I have the seller down from the low 14's to the high 12's right now. They don't seem to want to budge from there. Maybe they've reached their end.

    And don't forget, depending on where you live, the tax credit trading in makes a big difference. I trade a $13k vehicle and, with the tax credit taken into consideration, realize $13,910 trade-in credit. No advertising fees, no fielding calls, no looky-loos, no test drivers, no be-backs, etc. I would want at least $2k over trade on such a car to compensate, and the odds of that are not good.

    Worth ~$10k-$11k on a trade (closer to 11 if as good as described). So low 12s is pretty good.

    The poster indicated they're at HIGH 12s. That's the most I'd pay for one PP and it would have to be nice indeed at that price point. It is almost always worthwhile to pay a little extra for a one owner vehicle.

    Just got $15k on the trade. Other side of deal was '06 Lexus RX400h w/42k miles for $28k. RX in pristine condition - total OTD of $14.k plus trade, after sales tax, misc stuff they itemize, etc.

    2nd car bought in the last week, and was able to walk away happy and give business to two different car dealers - thanks to you guys on this forum.

    i traded in a car and the dealer posted the carfax with their ad.
    one entry read 'instrument panel checked'. actually, it was checked and replaced.
    ask the dealer for the mercedes service history.
    you know the germans, they document everything.
