Look for average auction value for the following:

    2008 Ford Mustang V6 Convertible
    Red
    30K Miles
    Southeastern Louisiana

    Thanks

The Jeep has 26k miles on it and has been garaged for most of its life. It's Navy, w/Sunroof, Alloy Wheels, CD Changer & 4WD.

Edmonds trade-in value = $11,000-$12,000 depending on whether it would be considered "clean" or "outstanding".

I took it to CarMax and they quoted $9,500. I was probably a sucker because I told them my loan balance was about that same amount before getting the figure.

Does this sound low? How reliable is the Edmonds value? Should I try to trade-in with my new car purchase? Thanks all

I would say that Carmax offer is a very good price...Take it and run...
A dealer will not give u more. Also Chrysler is in bankruptcy now,,so that will reduce the resale value.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    Figure wholesale between $14-15,000
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
CarMax is all over it at $9500.

    Edmunds values are frequently off.
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
Given the uncertain future of Chrysler, I'm surprised you're getting that much. Plus, you're not "upside down", that would make it way more of a problem for you.

If you can trade it in the next week or two for the $9500 & get the sales tax credit, sure, do that. But better not to blow off the car max offer, if you really want to sell.....
  • bbb74bbb74 Member Posts: 4
Not what I was hoping to hear, but thank you for the input. It looks like CarMax lists these for about $13.5-14K at their "no-haggle" sale price. I was hoping this was an indication it was worth a bit more. I doubt they're moving too many at that price based on your comments.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
May 8: "Also Chrysler is in bankruptcy now,,so that will reduce the resale value" (deltheking)

May 11: headline from Automotive News:

Residuals tumble after Chapter 11 filing
One week after Chrysler LLC filed for Chapter 11 reorganization, Automotive Lease Guide slashed projected residual values of the company's 2009 vehicles by 6 percentage points across the board.

Give the man an award or something, boy did you call that or what!?

Hope you sold that Jeep at CarMax, if not go back today and sell it right now.

It has 15K miles, In Ma, looks like new, non smoker, asking 34K. black in color, tires and exteroir look fine. I want to make an offer, but am seeking some idea of what the dealer likly has into it,

    thank you for your time
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    Avg wholesale is @ $29-30,000
Add at least $2000 if its a CPO car.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I know those are pricey when new, starting around $40k or so, but that price seems crazy-high to me.

It should have lost 20-25% of its value by now, even on the low side for depreciation that puts it at 32k.

Unless it has a ton of options?

Even if you needed 4 seats you could buy 2 brand new 2008 Miatas for that kind of money (really).

How important is that back seat? My kids would not fit in one. We tried. And they are 9 and 6 years old.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    Avg MSRP is @ $45,000
Plus, they don't make a whole lot of them.
Can't compare a Miata to a C70. Not fair to either car.

Your kids must be college basketball players if they can't fit in the back of a C70. I've gotten four 6 footers in that car plenty of times.

Thanks in advance for any information. What do you think a fair trade in value would be?

    Phoenix area
    2004 VW Jetta GLS 1.8T 4 dr.
    5 speed automatic Tiptronic trans
    Dark Green w/tan cloth interior
    37,200 miles

Monsoon sound system, power moon roof, alloy wheels, "sport" package with 17in wheels/lower body height, power windows/locks, power mirrors, window tint

New tires last July, brakes goodt, all maintanace done, never been in an accident, car is in good condition and is clean in and out.

    figure $6500-7000
    Color does you no favors.

Thanks again for your help - I ended up getting $10,250 (trade) for the Jeep coupled with a good price on an Odyssey based on the help of that forum. I feel pretty lucky since it was announced today that 800 dealers are being closed by Chrysler which could result in some fire sales on new vehicles.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    In the convertible?

Leg room is very tight in the back unless you move the front seats way forward. Look at this guy's feet - they line up with the front of the arm rest.

    image

My kids fit in the Sebring, PT Cruiser, and Solara convertibles comfortably, but that's about it. Anything else required the person in the front seat to move uncomfortably forward.
  • igozoomzoomigozoomzoom Member Posts: 801
The C70 has two new competitors this year- the Lexus IS Convertible and Infiniti G37 Convertible. I wonder if that will impact the used values of the C70?

Edmunds TMV is showing about $8900 for the Trade-In Value in 'Clean' Condition. The KBB Trade-In in 'Good' Condition is $8200. I used a Phoenix Zip Code for both figures and included the options you noted.

The figures may be off a little, but I'd hold out for at least $8k (maybe $7800). Take it to Carmax and see what they'll offer you, too. Or you could try to sell it yourself if you want the most out of it.... :)

Only car that doesn't happen in is a LWB 7 Series!

I'm 6'1" and I can sit in the back of the C70. No, the person in front of me can't sit all the way back, but it isn't uncomfortable either.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Hard to say, both cars are more expensive than the C70.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I checked out both at the NY Auto Show.

Funny part was Lexus was bragging about how theirs was the quickest power folding hard top at something like 23 seconds (IIRC).

Memo to Lexus: my Miata PRHT does the deed in 11 seconds.

Of course spokespeople will say anything at car shows. Maybe they meant among 4 seater, but she didn't specify that.

The back seats of the Lexus and Infiniti were tiny, token seats if you ask me.

max: we own a beach property about 3 hours away, so for us it would have to offer long-haul comfort for 4 people, and only the 3 convertibles mentioned above met that criteria.

Since I didn't like any of them, I gave up on that compromise completely and just got a 2 seater, which still gets plenty of use.
  • freffref Member Posts: 4
Thanks for that information igozoomzoom. I should have specified in my original post that I already had those values; I was looking for a "real world" estimate which is what volvomax provided - to me and many others in this thread.

Results - dealer lowballed at $5,500, ended up getting $8,400. New car purchase price was $600+ below invoice and we got all of the manufacturer-to-dealer incentive, so I don't feel like I left too much on the table.

    Thanks for the help.

    2000 Honda Accord EX-V6
    87,000 miles (no..it's not a typo)
    One owner
    White w/Tan Leather Interior
    Sunroof
New Honda installed transmission about 2 years ago, new alternator 3 years ago. Interior in very good condition, Exterior with a 2-3 small dings. Had minor fender bender right after purchased (April 2000) and got a new bumper. Brakes less than two years ago. Tires about 50% worn. All maintenance up to date.

Thinking I may come out better to sell it myself...would like to buy new soon, but willing to wait it out a bit...any thoughts?

I'm still here...still looking for a car. This one just became available at a local dealer:

    Myrtle Beach, SC
    2006 Mazda MX-5 Sport
    6-speed manual
    22k miles
    Blue exterior/ Black interior
    No major options
    Looks to be well maintained

What's the wholesale value? and what would be a fair offer?

    Thanks.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Pre-crisis that would have been a $17,000 car.

Today I bet you can get it for $14-15k.

For 2006 the Sport model was actually above the Touring. It was SV, then Touring, then Sport, then Grand Touring. So it's well equipped, hence the 6 speed.

For later years the Sport became the base model and the Touring is actually better equipped.

    Confusing I know.

But that helps you, in 06 the Touring had more stuff.

My advice? Consider a leftover 2008 model if you can still find them. Mazda has a $5000 incentive on them and believe it or not you can get a new one in the high teens.
  • krwest1krwest1 Member Posts: 79
This whole search actually started because of the $5000 incentive on the 2008s. There aren't any around here that I really want. They either aren't a color that I prefer and/or have too few or too many options. I know I can't be picky this late in the game, so that's why looking for other options.

There is a new 2008 sport soft top at the local dealer, but it has over $4k in options, and stickers for over $26k. Their first offer to me was $19K. If I can get a low mile 2006, in a better color, with the preferred options, for $13 or $14, it might be worth it to me. This particular one still has 1.5 years and lots of miles left on the warranty. Mazda still had 4/50 warranties in 2006.

I agree, the trim level changes from 2006 to 2007 are a little strange, but I think I have it all figured out.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
$7 grand off MSRP is pretty darn good....I'd be tempted.

Some people claim to have gotten $9 grand off list but that may be a $30k plus model to begin with, with higher margins for discounts.

High teens for a brand new sports car. Gotta love recession pricing. Hmm, do you want a loaded econobox, or a drop-top sport car with RWD for the same price? Tough choice. ;)
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
Value may be influenced a bit by the number of doors and what the Carfax shows. Regardless, there's no point in trading an older Honda because they're so easy to sell privately for better money. Take some good pics and put it on craigslist. Pricing depends on how much you want to fool with it - you might peg it at $6000 for an immediate sale, $7000 (maybe more) if you're in no hurry. Be sure to highlight that you're the original owner and, if it's the case, that you have the service records for it.

You'll definitely be better off selling it yourself. There is always a market for older Hondas in good condition (especially if you have all the maintenance records)!

On a separate note...how many miles did it have when the transmission had to be replaced two years ago? That really stinks. My dad has a '93 Accord EX with 265k miles on it and the AT lasted until 220k.

There were only about 75,000 miles on the car when the transmission was replaced. However, I believe there was some known issue with '00-01 Accord transmissions and thus, the dealer paid for everything. The great thing is, the car drives just like it did when it was new:)

We currently have a ford excursion that we are looking to trade/sell privately for a Volvo XC90 on a dealer's lot. Here are the details...

    2002 Ford Excursion Limited
    Black
    7.3 Liter Turbo Diesel
    110,000 miles
Every option except captains chairs and rear entertainment system - leather, wood trim, auto climate control, 6-disc CD Changer, satellite radio wiring, backup sensors. Also has the appearance package which makes it all mono-color black and no chrome trim pieces anywhere.

No accidents, no dings, no scratches - we are also the original owners and have all maintenance records both from when it was in warranty and from the diesel mechanic we use.

From what I can see it looks like I might be able to get $15,000 private party given that its a niche diesel truck - am I in the right neighborhood or way off?

The XC90 we are looking at is at a Volvo Dealer

    2006 Volvo XC90 V8 Ocean Race Edition
    20,000 miles
    Blue
    Tan Leather Interior
Rear Seat DVD entertainment system, back up sensors - pretty much all options except the navigation system.

No accidents, looks like a one owner and is volvo certified. The dealer is apparently asking 29, which to me sounds sky high but what say the guru's? Maybe I'm just hoping its less.

Both vehicles are in the Philly suburbs.

If the Excursion is a 4WD, then $15k might be possible, if its a 2WD, figure $10-11k tops.

If the Volvo is a CPO car, $29k is the correct asking price. You MIGHT get if for a couple grand less.

wholesale is @ $26,000. CPO adds about $2000
Doesn't sound like there is a whole lot of room in the price.

well, I expect the dealer will lowball your trade because "no one wants a stick", but also want top dollar for the TL because "sticks are ultra rare"

Stick drivers (especially in non-sports car applications) are like a cult, and something like the TL will probably not last long if it is clean.

What would you expect to pay for this with and without CPO? They seem like a great deal given that they all come with leather and other luxury features standard - even though it is nothing more than a glorified GMC Envoy.

I'm (again) looking for a cheap second car for our 'family' (two people)...we have an '01 Jeep Wrangler, which sucks for hauling people or things....I've seen a few Volvo 850 wagons....would anyone advise for or against them in general? Here's what's available:

    95 blue/green, tan leather, GLT automatic, 160k $2995
95 blue, black leather, GLT automatic, 136k $2495
    95 dark red/tan leather, GLT automatic, 129k $2100
    97 blue/green, gray cloth, base 850 w/alloys, 5sp manual, 160k $2395

....because of my bias(es), I'm leaning toward the last cuz I hate automatics, especially when they fail and cost $2-3k to replace, even though it has 160k.
Anything I should 'look out' for, or is this just a bad idea in general? I really would like a wagon (vs. an SUV) and prices are similar for model years....only other wagons out there are some older GMs, Tauruses, a very few Accords/Camrys (how about a '91 Accord for $3000? Ugh), and a few very old MB 300 TEs, which I'd tend to shy away from.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,330
later are better, but '95 is considered late I guess.

Nice cars, but they can get expensive, like anything else, if it breaks.

At those mileages, condition (and receipt repiars with reciepts) are prabably moe important than esthetics. And with a Volvo, expect it to have various pieces hanging off (door panels, stuff like that).

I also prefer the manual (for obvious reasons) but also because there is a much lower chance of a catastrophic, and expensive, failure. It it shifts smooth, and had the clutch done already, you should be good to go.

Stay away from the turbos on these too. And get it checked over by a Volvo specialist if at all possible.

The '97 looks like the best choice, but does seem pricey for 160K and a stick. Now, if clean and for 2K, looks like a better buy!

Heres an example of a clean one that someone else put $$ into (nicer car too than the 850)

    http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=116342

If you don't mind miles, you might do well with a Sube too.

...there's also a X70/V70 AWD Turbo for sale locally (160k, $2995) but the turbo and AWD scared me off....I'm a big fan of 'keeping it simple', for the most part. I'm going to look at a couple of the above, I may bite on the stick if I can get them down in price.

I basically want a grocery/hardware getter that I can also use to visit my parents (~200 miles away in opposite directions) that doesn't use a ton of gas and that I won't be super-embarrassed to drive around; I don't mind Subarus, but for some reason, they're somewhat scarce (or miley, or pricey or super rusty) in Chicago.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,733
i wouldn't shy away from the 850, but I don't know if I'd want one with so many miles to begin with. I understand what you are saying about automatics, but manuals can have problems, too, especially when you don't know how its been driven.

took a quick look to no avail, but I do see this for ...ummm... quite a bit more $$...
    V70 T5 stick ... fun fun! ;)

But, anyway, I bought my brother's 740 wagon with 98k miles a couple of years back for $1100. Ya might just have to be a bit patient for the right one to come along.

for torturing me. There was a red one like that on SS recently (lot more miles though) for less money that I really liked.

I don't actually need a car, and who knows how hard it would be to sell my Accord. But, somehting like this would be perfect if I suddenly found myself carless.

We should defer to Volvomax, but...

My guess is if you find a $2000 Volvo your first repair will cost you more than you paid for the car.

My next door neighbor had two, one sedan and one wagon, and gave them to their twin boys when the kids went to college. Neither lasted long enough and both twins got new Hyundai Elantras as graduation gifts.

Another friend had an early S60, first year they changed to that new naming system, and ditched it when even small repairs cost him over a grand.
