Edmonds trade-in value = $11,000-$12,000 depending on whether it would be considered "clean" or "outstanding".
I took it to CarMax and they quoted $9,500. I was probably a sucker because I told them my loan balance was about that same amount before getting the figure.
Does this sound low? How reliable is the Edmonds value? Should I try to trade-in with my new car purchase? Thanks all
A dealer will not give u more. Also Chrysler is in bankruptcy now,,so that will reduce the resale value.
Edmunds values are frequently off.
If you can trade it in the next week or two for the $9500 & get the sales tax credit, sure, do that. But better not to blow off the car max offer, if you really want to sell.....
May 11: headline from Automotive News:
Residuals tumble after Chapter 11 filing
One week after Chrysler LLC filed for Chapter 11 reorganization, Automotive Lease Guide slashed projected residual values of the company's 2009 vehicles by 6 percentage points across the board.
Give the man an award or something, boy did you call that or what!?
Hope you sold that Jeep at CarMax, if not go back today and sell it right now.
thank you for your time
Add at least $2000 if its a CPO car.
It should have lost 20-25% of its value by now, even on the low side for depreciation that puts it at 32k.
Unless it has a ton of options?
Even if you needed 4 seats you could buy 2 brand new 2008 Miatas for that kind of money (really).
How important is that back seat? My kids would not fit in one. We tried. And they are 9 and 6 years old.
Plus, they don't make a whole lot of them.
Can't compare a Miata to a C70. Not fair to either car.
Your kids must be college basketball players if they can't fit in the back of a C70. I've gotten four 6 footers in that car plenty of times.

New tires last July, brakes goodt, all maintanace done, never been in an accident, car is in good condition and is clean in and out.
Color does you no favors.
Leg room is very tight in the back unless you move the front seats way forward. Look at this guy's feet - they line up with the front of the arm rest.
My kids fit in the Sebring, PT Cruiser, and Solara convertibles comfortably, but that's about it. Anything else required the person in the front seat to move uncomfortably forward.
The figures may be off a little, but I'd hold out for at least $8k (maybe $7800). Take it to Carmax and see what they'll offer you, too. Or you could try to sell it yourself if you want the most out of it....
Only car that doesn't happen in is a LWB 7 Series!
I'm 6'1" and I can sit in the back of the C70. No, the person in front of me can't sit all the way back, but it isn't uncomfortable either.
Funny part was Lexus was bragging about how theirs was the quickest power folding hard top at something like 23 seconds (IIRC).
Memo to Lexus: my Miata PRHT does the deed in 11 seconds.
Of course spokespeople will say anything at car shows. Maybe they meant among 4 seater, but she didn't specify that.
The back seats of the Lexus and Infiniti were tiny, token seats if you ask me.
max: we own a beach property about 3 hours away, so for us it would have to offer long-haul comfort for 4 people, and only the 3 convertibles mentioned above met that criteria.
Since I didn't like any of them, I gave up on that compromise completely and just got a 2 seater, which still gets plenty of use.
Results - dealer lowballed at $5,500, ended up getting $8,400. New car purchase price was $600+ below invoice and we got all of the manufacturer-to-dealer incentive, so I don't feel like I left too much on the table.
Thanks for the help.

New Honda installed transmission about 2 years ago, new alternator 3 years ago. Interior in very good condition, Exterior with a 2-3 small dings. Had minor fender bender right after purchased (April 2000) and got a new bumper. Brakes less than two years ago. Tires about 50% worn. All maintenance up to date.
Thinking I may come out better to sell it myself...would like to buy new soon, but willing to wait it out a bit...any thoughts?

What's the wholesale value? and what would be a fair offer?
Thanks.
Today I bet you can get it for $14-15k.
For 2006 the Sport model was actually above the Touring. It was SV, then Touring, then Sport, then Grand Touring. So it's well equipped, hence the 6 speed.
For later years the Sport became the base model and the Touring is actually better equipped.
Confusing I know.
But that helps you, in 06 the Touring had more stuff.
My advice? Consider a leftover 2008 model if you can still find them. Mazda has a $5000 incentive on them and believe it or not you can get a new one in the high teens.
There is a new 2008 sport soft top at the local dealer, but it has over $4k in options, and stickers for over $26k. Their first offer to me was $19K. If I can get a low mile 2006, in a better color, with the preferred options, for $13 or $14, it might be worth it to me. This particular one still has 1.5 years and lots of miles left on the warranty. Mazda still had 4/50 warranties in 2006.
I agree, the trim level changes from 2006 to 2007 are a little strange, but I think I have it all figured out.
Some people claim to have gotten $9 grand off list but that may be a $30k plus model to begin with, with higher margins for discounts.
High teens for a brand new sports car. Gotta love recession pricing. Hmm, do you want a loaded econobox, or a drop-top sport car with RWD for the same price? Tough choice.

No accidents, no dings, no scratches - we are also the original owners and have all maintenance records both from when it was in warranty and from the diesel mechanic we use.

If the Volvo is a CPO car, $29k is the correct asking price. You MIGHT get if for a couple grand less.

95 dark red/tan leather, GLT automatic, 129k $2100
97 blue/green, gray cloth, base 850 w/alloys, 5sp manual, 160k $2395
....because of my bias(es), I'm leaning toward the last cuz I hate automatics, especially when they fail and cost $2-3k to replace, even though it has 160k.
Anything I should 'look out' for, or is this just a bad idea in general? I really would like a wagon (vs. an SUV) and prices are similar for model years....only other wagons out there are some older GMs, Tauruses, a very few Accords/Camrys (how about a '91 Accord for $3000? Ugh), and a few very old MB 300 TEs, which I'd tend to shy away from.
Nice cars, but they can get expensive, like anything else, if it breaks.
At those mileages, condition (and receipt repiars with reciepts) are prabably moe important than esthetics. And with a Volvo, expect it to have various pieces hanging off (door panels, stuff like that).
I also prefer the manual (for obvious reasons) but also because there is a much lower chance of a catastrophic, and expensive, failure. It it shifts smooth, and had the clutch done already, you should be good to go.
Stay away from the turbos on these too. And get it checked over by a Volvo specialist if at all possible.
The '97 looks like the best choice, but does seem pricey for 160K and a stick. Now, if clean and for 2K, looks like a better buy!
Heres an example of a clean one that someone else put $$ into (nicer car too than the 850)

I basically want a grocery/hardware getter that I can also use to visit my parents (~200 miles away in opposite directions) that doesn't use a ton of gas and that I won't be super-embarrassed to drive around; I don't mind Subarus, but for some reason, they're somewhat scarce (or miley, or pricey or super rusty) in Chicago.
took a quick look to no avail, but I do see this for ...ummm... quite a bit more $$...
V70 T5 stick ... fun fun!
But, anyway, I bought my brother's 740 wagon with 98k miles a couple of years back for $1100. Ya might just have to be a bit patient for the right one to come along.

My guess is if you find a $2000 Volvo your first repair will cost you more than you paid for the car.
My next door neighbor had two, one sedan and one wagon, and gave them to their twin boys when the kids went to college. Neither lasted long enough and both twins got new Hyundai Elantras as graduation gifts.
Another friend had an early S60, first year they changed to that new naming system, and ditched it when even small repairs cost him over a grand.
