BTW, about your remark that EX-L models with manual transmission exist...the 2009 Accord EX-L 4-cylinder is the last one to be offered with a a choice of manual or automatic transmission- it's automatic only for 2010 EX-Ls! The same is true for the Civic EX-L, too!
Unless the windhsield was replaced, water in does sound like the sunroof drains.

In fairness, shouldn't the cost of reconditioning be deducted on the wholesale side and taken into account when the dealer buys the vehicle?
I think I'd rather lease a '10 Audi for three years than pay $23 for a 3-year-old one and be looking at euro-denominated upkeep...

At least not in the auction lane where everyone is bidding at the same time. Some people buy over the internet and never really see the car until it arrives on the transport. Plus CPO recon is more strenous than Carmax recon.
I am interested in buying my Volvo xc90 at the end of my lease in october The buyout price is 21,800 from the leasing company (WellsFargo), so I am trying to determine if I have any negotiating room. The specs are:
Central NJ
2.5t AWD
35k miles
2006 xc90
Climate pkg, 3rd row seat, heated seats, moonroof
green/beige
car is in good condition--some wear on drivers seat and small dent in hood
tires are a tear old-replaced at 23,000 miles
new brake pads
car has regular scheduled maintenance
no accidents, though small dent hood may necessitate a repaint of hood
I'd appreciate your input as to what I can reasonably offer. I like the car, but at $22,000, I'm weighing either paying up slightly for a new car or downgrading to a cheaper used vehicle. Thanks
2009 Jeep Wrangler X 2-door

Blue, 6-speed manual, only option is air-conditioning.
Great condition, a few scraps in the front dash is the only thing that doesn't look brand new.
Location is Kansas City, MO
Thanks for any info!
Thanks again for your help.
But, check out this crash test by 5th gear on a 90s 940 Estate versus a new Renault Modus.
[It's long - summary: modern energy dispersal engineering helps a lot in an offset crash, even compared to the tank of the 90s]
Just look at the Euro NCAP results. The Modus is rated five stars but several of the other Japanese or Korean competitors are three or four stars.
2007 Mercury Mountaineer Luxury AWD
Miles: 49,500
Exterior: Silver Birch Metallic
Int: Charcoal Black - Leather
6cd changer, roof, 3rd row (non power), power/heated front seats, power/heated /lighted side mirrors, audiophile stereo with mp3/aux, tire pressure monitor, keyless entry, rear air, fog lights
Newer tires...brake pads and rotors just replaced when vehicle was put up for sale...
Asking price has been reduced to $17,988 (was $19,988)...
Vehicle is very clean on the exterior...a few scuffs and scratches on the inside...but nothing too bad.
Is that a pretty good deal or has the actual value on these dropped even more recently?
My guesstimate for the trade in value for this would be around 15k.So retail about 2k more.
I know it`s your choice but just asking-any reason you want the Mountaineer with that many miles especially considering that it is a gas hog and has not too great reliability.
Much better vehicles out there in the 17-18k price range.
If you are not towing, then a Honda Pilot/Toyota Highlander could be a better choice as their fuel economy, resale values and reliability are much better. And if you do tow a lot then an 05 or above Dodge Durango will be a better choice.Much cheaper -these depreciate like a rock and a used one is a good bargain-- can tow a lot ,pretty decent reliability as per CR and the gas mileage close to the Mountaineer. Also stay far away from any Nissan SUV`s.
Just my personal opinion though.Keep us posted. :shades:
Volvomax will give you the most accurate auction values.
Pilots and Highlanders around here are 5-10K more...and getting one for 17-18K means 2005 models in most cases. Out of the price range I am looking for at the moment.
...and...
My wife likes it...death blow right there... (no offense to any ladies in the audience - it's just the marriage dynamic at work).
How bad is the 6cyl gas mileage for the Mountaineer? 14 in the city? I know a friend witn an '05 MDX, rated 17 in city (I think) and he gets about 15 (in the same type of "city" driving we do)...and he's a pretty easy driver too. So I am not as sold on the Honda/Toyota/Acura gas mileage numbers in general.
Those are a dime a dozen.
We had a great deal on an '04 MDX...43K miles...rode very nicely and 1 owner/good maint records...priced to sell at $16,000...could have probably bought it for about $15,000
BUT...and there always is one...it was Sage Brush Pearl...some color that's sort of dark grey...sort of blue...sort of green...sort of OK with me but my wife HATED it...
I tried my best to sell that one to her...but no luck...
Happy wife, happy life.
I'd stay out of this and let her choose. If you influence the decision and 6 years from now the engine fails and she's stranded it would be YOUR FAULT!
Lease co doesn't care who finances it.
90 K miles
Needs new tires
small dent in front
Rest of the bells whisles work
Engine light is on. Changed oxygen sensor recntly with dealer.
What tradein value should I expect?
If she buys what she wants and the same thing happens, it's still his fault because he should've talked her out of it. :P
I sold a 1998 Forester L about 2 years ago, similar mileage, similar age (yours is a year newer now than mine was then). Mine was a manual trans and the lesser equipped L model.
I got $5550 private sale. It had minor damage, but good tires, no CEL.
In that condition, private parties will stay away, and dealers will low-ball you, $3-4 grand at best, if it's an automatic. Less for a manual.
If the check-engine light is on, do you have access to an OBDII scanner to read the error code? It could be a loose gas cap or even a misfire. New plugs, wires, or an ignition coil will fix that most of the time.
Sounds like a lot, but an ignition coil is just $80 and wires and plugs are less. For a little over $100 you can probably fix that an increase the value by 10 times as much as you'll spend.
Fix that then put it on Craigslist for $5975/obo, leaving room to offer a credit for new tires. You can get what I got I think.
So true...
If not, take it to any of the bigger auto parts supply stores like Autozone or Advanced Discount and they will read the code for free and even offer the recommended part to replace. I did that with my 98 Mustang on an O2 sensor and saved over $200 compared with taking it to a dealer.
If it is a $5500 retail price how is a $3-$4k trade a steal for a dealer. Add new tires, repair body damage, detail and the big unknown on the check engine light and there would not be a whole lot of gross left.
I would not fix the body damage. Mine had a few dings and dents and sold for that price.
Fix the CEL with $120 or so of parts and some elbow grease.
You still come out a couple of grand ahead.
Worth it to me, at least.
Sorry, gotta speak slowly to me. Public schools....

What is the market value of this truck?
2006 Volvo V70 2.5T
54K miles
Black (ouch!), tan hides
Premium package (aforementioned leather and sunroof)
Climate package (bun warmers, rain-sensing wipers and headlight washers)
Alloys but I think they're standard on the 2.5T
Few minor scratches, no real dents or dings, no paint work... interior is nice and clean.
Original brakes, only 9K on current tires, all maintenance up to date (dealer, documented).
What could it bring in trade if I'm shopping a TDI SportWagen at our local VW haus?
Danke...

take it out on the highway with some hills.
feel for vibrations off throttle downhill.
listen for a whining noise from the rear axle under various conditions.
check the front climate control system heat/cooling.
switch them up and listen for any creaking.
ask them if they will let you take it overnight.
when starting up from cold, let it idle down to 1k or lower.
is shift into reverse smooth?
A 1-year visitor at work brought a car in today and I checked it out:
'02 Mazda 626
White
92k miles
V6/auto
Decent shape, nothing special
Leather, pwr stuff, cruise air etc.
Tires would have to go before the snow flies.
Body is straight, no wrecks, one quarter panel looks like it's been off.
Oil is dirty but valve train looks "OK"
Transmission fluid was never changed, by the looks of it; same is probably true for the rest of the car. But as 8-year-old cars go...
Asking price is $5,500.
My guess is it's a $3 wholesale car.
I'm telling them to have it checked out and pay $4,500 if they have to... $5 if it checks out really well... does that sound about right?
Thanks in advance,
-Mathias

Lack of maintenance would be a bit of a concern for longevity.
My wife owned a 1995 626 V6 ES, loaded up. She liked it more than I did. It wasn't particularly efficient and wanted premium fuel. It started to fall apart after the 5th year or so - axles, exhaust, bearings.
I dunno, 8 years and not cared for so well is a red flag for me.
An 02 Legacy that replaced it was far more reliable and durable. I have had luck with Miatas, though.
$5500 seems high to this former 626 owner.
OTOH, we're talking about a visiting scientist with a 1-year appointment... new is out of the question, and used is always tricky... I had the same powertrain in a '96 Millenia with 170k miles that ran like a top... I'm inclined to go to mid-$4s if the mechanic check comes out OK.
The thing is, she's got to buy something, and the used-car market in this town is not pretty.
All the $12k two-year-old cars from 6 months ago are now $15 and up, or so it seems... the $5 region is probably the way to go.
Cheers -Mathias
Ours kept breaking, but to be fair no single repair cost more than a grand.
2002 Chevrolet Blazer xTreme
2dr, factory lowered and ground effects
85K miles
no dents, dings, or rust.
Hood has been repainted. Not bad, but has some rock chips in the leading edge.
Full function roof mounted long console w/trip computer
Tires like new
Bumper to bumper maintenance with GM parts, including the correct ceramic pads all the way around.
Pwr windows, heated pwr mirrors, cruise/tilt cd
Interior shows normal wear for age, but no cuts or tears.
Everything works. Totally stock, no weird aftermarket junk.

If it's got a bunch of scratches and chips, probably $13,500-14,000
EDIT:
And if you ever get to drive one, the best way to describe the suspension is "crude, but effective". Stiff springs, huge sway bars, 16" wheels with fat rubber (other Blazers use 15" wheels). A hoot to drive, but not something you would ever confuse with finesse. :shades:
