Never been in a collision. I cleaned the seats myself and they look great. Outside is in good shape- small scratches/small chips in paint but no dents. Clean carpet throughout.
What do you think? How much can I get for trade in? How much if I sell it myself?
TIA!
My first Volvo was a 79 242 w/ 150,000 miles on the clock. Tough old car.
Thank you for your insights and responses.
As it pertains to this situation:
My wife spoke with the leasing company, and before she could make an offer, they said they would not negotiate the price, that they could make money buying this car. Is this possible? Everything I've read online indicates wholesale for this car is around 18,500 (galves had it for about 18,700), so I'm stuck. I cant imagine they ar eplaying chicken with me with 3 weeks left on the lease? Is my price at 21,800 that good?
I appreciate your feedback, or anyone else who has any suggestions.
Thanks
But I wouldn't say that the dealer with the low number was trying to cheat you. His offer depends on whether he thinks he can turn it over quickly.
One thing I found was that the Mazda 3s just don't sell very fast at non-Mazda lots. They're nice cars and they fit what a lot of people are looking for in an import job. But for some reason, whenever we had them on the lot (both at import and domestic lots) they tended to sit, and sit and sit, until we cut the price to the point where we made only a few hundred bucks of profit. Occasionally we'd even have to take a loss. Don't ask me why. Maybe people think they're Fords with an import label -- certainly the small trucks are identical. Or maybe import fanatics are stuck on the whole Toyota/Nissan/Honda thing. Anyway, the Mazda cars are pretty nice, in my opinion -- but just try to sell one!
We also had a fair number of customers who wanted to trade out of their Mazda 3s. Didn't like 'em, regretted the experience, and didn't want another Mazda. And of course, they wouldn't tell us why. They'd come in armed with book sheets from the Internet and assume that we'd offer them somewhere close to the figures they'd seen. "It's a fine car," they'd say, "worth top dollar."
"So how come you're not buying another?"
"Not on your life! But I want every penny for this one."
Usually our offer would disappoint them. Generally we'd find that the Mazda dealer had buried them in the thing.
Odds are that the used-car manager who offered you the low bucks had a similar experience with Mazda cars, and never wanted to see another one on his lot (unless he could pick it up cheap). When he has a car that gathers dust the way Mazdas do, the best thing for him to do is to sell it at auction. And he can't pay top dollar for an auction rig.
You're lucky to have found the one non-Mazda dealer willing to take a chance. Might be that he hasn't been struck yet by the Mazda curse.

Actually, thought I'd offer a thought here, too. This might sound like a reasonable proposition, but it isn't always true.
When I was selling cars I always tried to have a pretty fair idea of what the Edmunds site was saying about the "TMV" prices on new vehicles. Meanwhile, Edmunds trade-in values are higher than auction values on used, like every other book. (And the Edmunds retail prices for used were always waaaaay too low -- but don't get me started there!)
When I was a Nissan dealership, the Edmunds figures on new cars seemed reasonable, and I used them to my advantage. Usually the TMV price allowed us a profit on new Nissans, especially on Muranos, and if the trade was nice (and an easy-to-sell make and model that we'd want to keep), I'd say, let's just cut the muss and fuss and go Edmunds TMV versus Edmunds trade-in value. The dealer would make 500 bucks or so, I'd collect my $200 cut, and everyone would go home reasonably happy.
Made several sales that way.
But at a Chevy/Cadillac dealership, there was no way I could do that. The TMV prices on the new GM products were so low that they allowed us no profit at all. I remember, the Escalades a year ago had TMV prices that were below our invoice cost. What? They expected us to go into holdback? On cars that had been gathering dust (and flooring costs) for months? Yeah, we might have done it -- Cadillac buyers were few and far between when the stock market crashed and it looked like GM might go under, and we were grateful when customers came in. I had to wonder how the dealership survived. But if you sell new cars at TMV prices that are under your cost, there's no way you can offer full ticket on a trade.
So in that sort of a situation, auction value against TMV is the best you're going to get. It's the only rational thing for the dealer to offer. (Well, okay, I always started by offering auction value versus full sticker plus additional-dealer-markup -- but I didn't often get that.)
The big thing is that in the car business, there are no hard and fast rules.

Looks like the lease co should come close to your buyout at the auction. I doubt that they would get a whole lot more though.

Are those real auction numbers? They're a little lower than I expect.
Keep it and drive the wheels off that thing.
Just want to update my Quicken with accurate info, especially while I still have a loan on the car. I've been using Edmunds' data, but the TMV showed a sudden drop of over $1,000 in the past month (I guess with the 2010 models coming out--well, the 2010 models of every brand but Pontiac
No official word, but I suspect my local dealer may be one of the discontinued ones. Next closest dealer is a Chevy dealer that I think is also one of the departed franchisees. Darn it, having a lot of dealers nearby was the main reason I bought it!
At this point, I plan to keep it at least through the 3/36 warranty, at which point it should be paid off.
A CPO one may be a good value right now...
Ended up with a PRHT Miata. I sorta wanted something with a back seat to take the kids along but my older daughter is now old enough to ride in the front seat anyway.

The top on my Celica has taken to being squeaky anyway so changing that wouldn't be a big deal...
The top was nifty but seemed extremely complex. The Miata's is smaller of course but also seems to have 1/4 as many hinges to potentially fail.
I keep my cars for a long time (owned a 93 Miata at the time) and wouldn't have wanted to own that G6 PRHT without a warranty.

A friend at work leased a G6 hard top vert and said the top rattles when it's cold. Buy out price is 4K more than the book value. Needless to say, it's going back in a few months when the lease is up.

Gotta wonder how well any rubber or plastic parts have held up over 25 years, even if it was vacuum packed.
23k out the door is extremely light for a CPO 07 A4 with mileage in the 20's. We're paying high 21's to mid 22's for cars like this. Factor in re conditioning (at least 1200) and the CPO fee that we pay to Audi (at least 1290 depending on the engine) and thats why we need 26k fir the car. Hope this sheds some light....
