I’ve bought 4 Volvos over the past million years or so that I’ve been driving [ none new ] and started with a PV544. Now that had character. And clutch problems. A 122S with very hard, but very supportive seats. A 144S with temperamental twin SU sidedraft carbs. And just before I left the military, a 164E – with [ woo hoo ] fuel injection and 6 cylinders [ ! ] a [ relatively ] short throw 4-speed manual trans and electrically engaged overdrive.

Drove that 164E many, many miles.

We are trying to figure out realistically what we will get at trade-in versus private party sale for our vehicle.

    2005 Mercury Mariner
    Limited Trim, FWD V6
w/ Power Seat, Privacy Glass, Roof Rack, and dealership installed MP3.
    87,000 mi
Never been in a collision. I cleaned the seats myself and they look great. Outside is in good shape- small scratches/small chips in paint but no dents. Clean carpet throughout.

What do you think? How much can I get for trade in? How much if I sell it myself?

    TIA!

Don't remember if my dad's 122 had firm seats -- I was 19 at the time. Do remember that it was solid and the dash set up had red/green/blue back lighting on some of the monitoring buttons. Very cool -- nothing like anything domestic. My 142 was more like a chevelle in a big rectangular box. Nothing endearing--just a noisy ride.

Don't see too many of the antiques anymore. We do have a couple of P1800's and 1800 ES' that come in for service.
My first Volvo was a 79 242 w/ 150,000 miles on the clock. Tough old car.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Figure $5-6,000 on a trade. $1-2,000 more private party.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
High miles and no AWD gotta hurt the value.
  • ECornetaECorneta Member Posts: 8
Well, I DID improve my net and the presumably "reputable" dealer I originally went to may have been blowing smoke up my [non-permissible content removed] (this is not a desirable car ..., most people expect urealistic offers ...). I have just been offered over $1500 more for my Mazda3 trade-in than the $8500 that originally prompted me to start this thread, can this really be explained by a two-day variability in the market? I have my doubts.
  • jayriderjayrider Member Posts: 3,602
Your mazda is an used car with a trade in value that will vary from dealer to dealer and from week to week. One dealer is expressing a disinterest in your trade by offering you less while the other wants it and offers you more. Good for you that you found the one that gives you more.
  • ECornetaECorneta Member Posts: 8
I understand that dealers may appraise cars differently, and I would expect possibly a higher offer from a Mazda dealer. But I went to two different VW dealers wthin 30 miles of each other. I am just surprised at the arbitrariness and variability of the process, that's all. I am happy that everything is finally settled and I won't have to deal with this any longer; I hate shopping for a car ...

Thank you for your insights and responses.

    Hi Volvomax,

As it pertains to this situation:
My wife spoke with the leasing company, and before she could make an offer, they said they would not negotiate the price, that they could make money buying this car. Is this possible? Everything I've read online indicates wholesale for this car is around 18,500 (galves had it for about 18,700), so I'm stuck. I cant imagine they ar eplaying chicken with me with 3 weeks left on the lease? Is my price at 21,800 that good?
I appreciate your feedback, or anyone else who has any suggestions.
    Thanks

I can't speak to whether the number was fair -- I've been out of the car business more than six months now, and so I'm not in touch with numbers as I once was.

But I wouldn't say that the dealer with the low number was trying to cheat you. His offer depends on whether he thinks he can turn it over quickly.

One thing I found was that the Mazda 3s just don't sell very fast at non-Mazda lots. They're nice cars and they fit what a lot of people are looking for in an import job. But for some reason, whenever we had them on the lot (both at import and domestic lots) they tended to sit, and sit and sit, until we cut the price to the point where we made only a few hundred bucks of profit. Occasionally we'd even have to take a loss. Don't ask me why. Maybe people think they're Fords with an import label -- certainly the small trucks are identical. Or maybe import fanatics are stuck on the whole Toyota/Nissan/Honda thing. Anyway, the Mazda cars are pretty nice, in my opinion -- but just try to sell one!

We also had a fair number of customers who wanted to trade out of their Mazda 3s. Didn't like 'em, regretted the experience, and didn't want another Mazda. And of course, they wouldn't tell us why. They'd come in armed with book sheets from the Internet and assume that we'd offer them somewhere close to the figures they'd seen. "It's a fine car," they'd say, "worth top dollar."

"So how come you're not buying another?"

"Not on your life! But I want every penny for this one."

Usually our offer would disappoint them. Generally we'd find that the Mazda dealer had buried them in the thing.

Odds are that the used-car manager who offered you the low bucks had a similar experience with Mazda cars, and never wanted to see another one on his lot (unless he could pick it up cheap). When he has a car that gathers dust the way Mazdas do, the best thing for him to do is to sell it at auction. And he can't pay top dollar for an auction rig.

You're lucky to have found the one non-Mazda dealer willing to take a chance. Might be that he hasn't been struck yet by the Mazda curse.

"Think about it: if you accept the auction price on the trade and a site's recommended price on a new car, that's a very nice profit spread for the dealer."

Actually, thought I'd offer a thought here, too. This might sound like a reasonable proposition, but it isn't always true.

When I was selling cars I always tried to have a pretty fair idea of what the Edmunds site was saying about the "TMV" prices on new vehicles. Meanwhile, Edmunds trade-in values are higher than auction values on used, like every other book. (And the Edmunds retail prices for used were always waaaaay too low -- but don't get me started there!)

When I was a Nissan dealership, the Edmunds figures on new cars seemed reasonable, and I used them to my advantage. Usually the TMV price allowed us a profit on new Nissans, especially on Muranos, and if the trade was nice (and an easy-to-sell make and model that we'd want to keep), I'd say, let's just cut the muss and fuss and go Edmunds TMV versus Edmunds trade-in value. The dealer would make 500 bucks or so, I'd collect my $200 cut, and everyone would go home reasonably happy.

    Made several sales that way.

But at a Chevy/Cadillac dealership, there was no way I could do that. The TMV prices on the new GM products were so low that they allowed us no profit at all. I remember, the Escalades a year ago had TMV prices that were below our invoice cost. What? They expected us to go into holdback? On cars that had been gathering dust (and flooring costs) for months? Yeah, we might have done it -- Cadillac buyers were few and far between when the stock market crashed and it looked like GM might go under, and we were grateful when customers came in. I had to wonder how the dealership survived. But if you sell new cars at TMV prices that are under your cost, there's no way you can offer full ticket on a trade.

So in that sort of a situation, auction value against TMV is the best you're going to get. It's the only rational thing for the dealer to offer. (Well, okay, I always started by offering auction value versus full sticker plus additional-dealer-markup -- but I didn't often get that.)

The big thing is that in the car business, there are no hard and fast rules.

Looks like the price of this keeps going up. probably due to winter coming and the percieved need for AWD vehicles.
Looks like the lease co should come close to your buyout at the auction. I doubt that they would get a whole lot more though.

    Just seeing where I stand:

    Louisville, KY
    2008 Pontiac G6 4-door
    3.5L V6, 4-speed Automatic
    FWD
    11,000 miles
    Black metallic/black
Alloy wheels, spoiler, fog lights, plus the standard stuff like CD player, cruise control, power windows/locks/mirrors, ABS, side airbags, and remote entry.
Not a rental, very good to great condition. Tires almost new. All maintenance performed.

There is alot more to a car's "trade-in value" than what its truly worth. As others have stated, some has to do with whether or not the dealer wants it on their lot and feels they can make money off it. Some has to do with what they feel they need to put into it to make it saleable. Some has to do with how they interpret the data they are looking at to appraise the vehicle (in other words, some guys truly make mistakes). And, last but definitely not least, some has to do with what you are buying and what you are paying for it.

I'm sure you're aware but with Pontiac gone values are hurting.

Keep it and drive the wheels off that thing.

"I'm sure you're aware but with Pontiac gone values are hurting."

Just want to update my Quicken with accurate info, especially while I still have a loan on the car. I've been using Edmunds' data, but the TMV showed a sudden drop of over $1,000 in the past month (I guess with the 2010 models coming out--well, the 2010 models of every brand but Pontiac :) ).

No official word, but I suspect my local dealer may be one of the discontinued ones. Next closest dealer is a Chevy dealer that I think is also one of the departed franchisees. Darn it, having a lot of dealers nearby was the main reason I bought it!

At this point, I plan to keep it at least through the 3/36 warranty, at which point it should be paid off.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I test drove the folding hard top model but I sensed a lot of creaks and groans. Too much cowl shake for my tastes - on the chop-top that is.

A CPO one may be a good value right now...

Ended up with a PRHT Miata. I sorta wanted something with a back seat to take the kids along but my older daughter is now old enough to ride in the front seat anyway.

No. Those are from Galves. I don't have access to the auction numbers (I'm not a dealer). I figured since you are near my neck of the woods, Galves should be just about spot on for you, I'm sorry to say.

Make sure you drive with the top closed. I heard some structural creaks and groans that scared me away. And it had 7 miles on it.

The top was nifty but seemed extremely complex. The Miata's is smaller of course but also seems to have 1/4 as many hinges to potentially fail.

I keep my cars for a long time (owned a 93 Miata at the time) and wouldn't have wanted to own that G6 PRHT without a warranty.

A friend at work leased a G6 hard top vert and said the top rattles when it's cold. Buy out price is 4K more than the book value. Needless to say, it's going back in a few months when the lease is up.

    Andy,

23k out the door is extremely light for a CPO 07 A4 with mileage in the 20's. We're paying high 21's to mid 22's for cars like this. Factor in re conditioning (at least 1200) and the CPO fee that we pay to Audi (at least 1290 depending on the engine) and thats why we need 26k fir the car. Hope this sheds some light....
