KBB, NADA and Edmund's TMV Trade-In value is almost identical for a 2010 Chrysler Town & Country Touring with the mileage and features listed....somewhere in the $22,300-$22,900 range, at best. That is at least $11k less than Sticker Price when it was new. From a financial perspective, trading in the Chrysler this soon is a very bad idea.
The Routan is also more expensive than a similarly-equipped T&C. VW offers four trim levels (S, SE, SEL and SEL Premium) and the only options available are NAV and Rear Entertainment System (DVD). Otherwise, if you want certain feeatures, you have to buy the trim level that includes them standard!
To get Leather Seats, Heated 1st/2nd Row, Power Liftgate, Power Moonroof, Power Folding 3rd Row, or even the 4.0L engine, you're forced to pay for the SEL (which starts at $37,400). The $31,400 SE model has Leatherette interior, the 3.8L V6...no heated seats, no automatic climate control or even automatic headlamps! That costs another $6,000 (for the SEL)! And the only way to get Remote Start and Rear Park Assist is along a Premium Sound System, standard Rear Entertainment System and HID headlamps which are included on the SEL Premium...priced from $43,300.
From a business perspective, VW is pretty smart to structure the trim levels that way! Honda has always sold cars the same way with their DX/LX/EX/EX-L trim levels. It simplifies manufacturing, ordering and dealer stock because there are only a few possible configurations. But it sucks for the customer unless they were already planning to buy the top-of-the-line model- they have to choose between paying for features they don't want/need to get the ones that they do OR choose to do without and buy a lesser trim....
$19-20,000 if it's the 3.8 liter.
These are auction ranges with similar miles, should be pretty close.

I have actually used this forum in the past to get 3rd party opinion on values some time ago, and thought it was very helpful.
I do have access to Manheim Auto auction data, which is what most dealers base their trade in offers on, as it it shows what the true wholesale value of a vehicle is based on previous sales. So while I can assure you the auction numbers are correct and accurate, your experience may vary So if it's helpful, I can offer this information until someone more qualified comes along, lol.

I like your idea of just buying the VW badges.
As dismal as resale is on the Chrysler I think the VW would be even worse. Nobody knows what a Routan even is.

Your posting piqued my curiosity about the residual value of the Routan vs. the T&C. The results are very interesting and only reinforce what I said about the Routan being overpriced on higher trim levels.
I got this data from Automotive Lease Guide (ALG)-
The following numbers are the % of the original vehicle price that it will be worth in 24 months:
2010 Chrysler T&C
LX- 53%
Touring- 55%
Touring Plus- 53%
Limited- 52%
2010 VW Routan
S- 55%
SE- 52%
SEL- 43%
SEL Premium- 43% - a $43,300 SEL Premium will lose $24,350 in value in just two years!
The only Chrysler vehicle that can beat that is the Sebring Limited Convertible- it's worth a whopping 37% after 24 months!
car_man just gave a quote for a 36 month lease on a Subaru WRX STI with 36,000 miles, and it was 66%!
That's 3 years, not 2, by the way.
For cryin' out loud, pick a car that won't depreciate like a rock falling off a cliff.
Or at least keep a GC/Routan forever, literally drive it in to the ground.

I paid just over $25k for my Sienna, the whole thing that is, not a 2 year lease.
Now, coming from the other perspective, these can be bargains used...
sticker on a loaded routan is 43K, As someone else noted, you can buy one for 9K off, so 34 K.
so right there, that knocks 9K off your calculated $amount of depreciation.

Two things bother me now despite the fact that I like the car very much.
1. The owner acclaimed that he is the first owner of the car. But, the title says that the car has a 7800 acutal milage on it when he purchased it. And it is 05 model, but the purchase date was May, 2006.
2. there was a minor car accident in the history, but mechanic check result is ok. The volvo dealership said that it is qualified with extend warrenty (4 years, 2400 $, if I buy the car, I will buy the extended warrenty for sure)
Should I be concerned with the 7800 milage when the owner purchased that? Which kinds of tricks may this car have (e.g., demonstrate car stuff)?
is 19000 $ (before tax and title) overpriced for this car ? (05 model, XC90, V8, 43000 mile, DVD, third row seats, navigation. with a car accident history in june, 2010)
It's a good 10 footer, well maybe if you don't look to hard.
Left rear fender was keyed, back hatch rear panel cracked, right front bumper and rear bumper are scuffed. Driver's seat shows wear.
Blend door shaky, cd player sometimes needs to be persuaded to give up a cd.
Disabled easy entry seat because it kept blowing a fuse.
Will need front brakes in less than 10k.
Trans replaced at 90k and under warranty for another year.
4WD, V8, 3rd seat, rear air, tow package. 5k on tires and rear brakes.
Runs great.
I'm looking for 2 things. Of course a number, and how many of the quirks would you take note of at an auction?
In case you don't know, these are very troublesome cars as they age and they are very expensive to have repaired.
I can see why you like this car but in my not so humble opinion, there are MUCH better choices.

But in general, I believe the 5 cyl (2.5t) is less troublesome than the V8. Better MPG but slower too!
as to the ownership question, it may he been a demonstrator unit, or a service loaner, so he might be the first retail owner. In any case, probably not a big deal.
and if the accident was only 3 months ago, ask to see the repair records.
Others can help with the price, but check TMV here also for a benchmark.
Also, check a few Volvo dealers to see what a CPO car like this would be going for. For reference, my local (NJ) dealer has a 2007 V8 with 44K, listed at $33,000

The owner said that he does not have any car repair report because there was no damage on this car. I went over the police department for the case report of the accident. I was told that since it was a accident less than 1000 $ damage, they do no have detailed report about the accident. So, it was too bad.

I was thinking that there may be some tricks or surprises about it. I just do not know how to find it at this point.
think of it this way. If you rolled slowly into the guy in front of you and bumped him, but did no damage, you technically had an accident. And if the other guy reported it just in case (or maybe he had some damage), then it is on record.
in any case, less than a $1,000 on that car has to be exceptionally minor.
At minimum, you need a thorough pre purchase inspection (I think you said you had one already?) and if that is clean, I would not worry about it.
and some people are probably better off at a dealer, but you are just as likely to get a bad car or ripped off that way, since plenty of cars with issues get sold on dealers lots every day.

Mostly electrical problems with these cars.
It is a very pleasant vehicle and really head and shoulders above any other comparably priced SUV, IMHO.
Now, what you need to know about it is that the AWD system is problematic. They have a tendency to develop a leak at the rear output shaft. Just to fix the leak is a $1200 repair. If the unit needs replacing.... well, I don't remember the price off the top of my head, but quite a bit more than $1200. This, to me, is the one to worry about and the only reason I would avoid the vehicle. If I ever bought another, it would be FWD only.
The v8 is not COMMONLY problematic. There are some reports of the balance shaft bearing going kaput and destroying the engine. But, again, not common.
The other common problem is wheel bearings. It eats them regularly and the entire hub needs to be replaced on these to fix it. Both of our rears went at around 30k miles and were replaced under warranty. Reports I've seen seem to indicate they go out roughly every 30k.
The only transmission problems are in the T6 model, which was discontinued after '05 (I believe that's the year) anyway.

True, but that's still $15 grand of depreciation in 2 years, and your actual cost is higher because you pay taxes and such unless you are Joe Biden (DE has no sales tax).
You're right, though, the residuals are always based on MSRP. I'd want about $18k off list before a loaded Routan sparked my interest, though. LOL
Generally speaking, the condition would determine whether the car is Average, or Below average with a corresponding price difference. Obviously it's all relative depending on age, mileage, etc.
i think this would be a great cadidate for a Craigslist sale, clean it up a bit and it's be gone in a heartbeat, especially with the snowy season on the horizon.

If the 52% resale holds true, you can sell this car after 2 years for 33400 x 52% = 17368. So, the depreciation for 2 years is less than 7k. I think that's really good for a 33k car.
