Last yr you could get one in the CRV too (or maybe 06 was?)

It was 2006. I know this because I happen to own an '06 CR-V with the stick.

In Missouri, you always pay at the DMV when you go to title/license your vehicle. Missouri seems to have different taxation levels depending on where you title your vehicle - they are a property tax state, so this also allows your local area to get a record of what vehicle you own for that purpose (and that tax definitely differs from county to county, city to city).

Here we are approaching the last day of the month and I've settled on two 2008 Corollas. One is a CE just coming off lease with 6600 miles (that's no mistake!). It does have power windows and locks and a slight scratch on the right side. The other is an LE with 32K miles, fairly clean inside and out. Both are asking $11.9K,but both are willing to deal tomorrow, we'll see. Again, using Edmunds TMV, dealer retail for both is $11.4K - $11.6K. What would be a reasonable OTD price (estimately approx. $830 for taxes, tags, proc. fees, etc.)? Thanks.
  • jayriderjayrider Member Posts: 3,602
Have you checked the prices of brand new 2010 elantras ? Full warranty for
5 years and well reviewed. Not much more than the used corollas -- take a test drive and check truecar.
  • crkyolfrtcrkyolfrt Member Posts: 2,345
I would appreciate a price for both as a USA car or as a CDN car. If there are differences then I'd like to know what they are. (California emissions equipped , notwithstanding) i.e. It doesn't need to meet their standards, as i won't be selling it there. If anyone can help me with a price, the original post was #40351.

Let's leave taxes and property tax and other similar ramifications out of it, the thread took a turn that ended up not helping me. I just would appreciate a price from some who is knowledgeable in that area.

    Here's a challenge,

my 82 year old dad has a silver/grey 2005 subaru baja sport with 62k, no dings, good tread and clean, no surprises. he wants to trade even for a newish subaru outback wagon, auto, heated seats, 4 cyl. how new would a dealer go. don't dealers do wholesale trades with customers to move a plain jane unit for something interesting?
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 265,440
So... He is the one that bought the Baja in 2005.... ;)

He can probably get into a similar mileage 2005 or maybe a 2006 Outback wagon. They're not going to do anything special on this type of deal. It's worth what it's worth and will be used to offset whatever sales price you negotiate on the "newish" vehicle. Vanilla outback wagon is just as marketable (maybe more....) than a Baja regardless of how interesting it is.
  • newdavidqnewdavidq Member Posts: 146
Its difficult to imagine why a dealer or anyone else for that matter would want to trade a popular car like a Subie Outback Wagon for a Baja. Plus, it would be tough to find two cars of any kind which would be valued equally; one of the parties would have to add some cash to the deal.

    Regards DQ
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,330
unless you trade for a "lesser" car (older, more miles) you will have to kick in some cash, since they will be starting the deal as the Baja at wholesale, and the new car at retail.

so theoretically, based on what they would offer you as a trade in, if you bought an identical used car from them, they would want 3K kicked into the deal.

Those Baja's are kinda cool but they are VERY hard to sell. Few people wanted them as new cars and even fewer seem to want them used.

Still, there just might be a person who is looking and can't find one.

I would advertise it and sell it on his own before shopping for a replacement.

What everyone here is missing is Subaru's Guaranteed Trade-in Value Program.

Just ask your dealer about it. Subaru offers above-market trade-in values. Here are the details:

    http://www.subaru.com/finance-center/guaranteed-trade-in-program/trade-in-value.- - html

2005 subaru baja sport with 62k

Touchdown! Yours may be eligible (miles under 75k).

Baja did sell very poorly, but it also won JD Powers APEAL study for its class, most appealing compact pickup truck. So the few people that got them, loved them.
  • sebring95sebring95 Member Posts: 3,241
Only applies to buying a NEW Subaru. Don't think you'll find a new Outback Wagon regardless of what this guaranteed trade-in unless it's substantially beyond real-world trade-in value. And by substantially I mean a mythical number well in excess of reality.
  • jayriderjayrider Member Posts: 3,602

forgot to ask if this was panel van or wagon. But, in any case, I'll assume it is the 4-door wagon since that is far more popular.

Take this for what it is worth in Chi-town, but here in the northeast, you'd be looking at $10k.

Actually, that class includes the Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Frontier, Chevy Colorado and its GMC twin.

That Baja was near worthless as a truck with that tiny bed!
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
The ST-X concept had a mid-gate, Avalanche style, and a bed extender. Not to mention a supercharger.

Subaru launched the Baja sans mid-gate (instead it got a tiny pass through), and the 165hp model only, with only 4 seats. They made leather and moonroof standard to force high pricing, $25k range. IIRC payload was something like 8-900 lbs, a joke for a pickup.

Later they added a turbo and brought prices back down to earth, but it was too late, and the mid-gate never arrived.

    Good concept, poor execution.

I can only tell you that Galves hits the Baja at $11k-$12k. A dealer would probably be at the low end of that, if not lower, thanks to the unpopularity of the car.

An Outback wagon of the same vintage and mileage is very very close in wholesale value to the Baja. SOOO... an even trade for a "newish" one? Not a chance.

here's a quote from one of your better hosts explaining the nuance of humor:

Well, the acceptability of jokes depends on the context and the "tone". Some are good natured, and some are designed to aggravate others and instigate fights. So the host has to call each one based upon what he or she sees going on and the likely outcome. Trolls are smacked down asap, but some fun with a pun might be welcome if it is done in a friendly, teashing kind of way, with the proper emoticons perhaps

Frnstance, if it is an Aztek discussion, started for the purpose of sharing info among owners, then silly jokes about the car are NOT appropriate. Same for Mustang, Camaro, BWM topics whatever. But if it is a general discussion say about "problems with Vans" or "Ugly vehicles", it might be okay as long as it wasn't patently offensive or crude.

poking fun at sales numbers is exactly the same. i was looking for info, not a weak joke. the better hosts don't do that.
  • Kirstie_HKirstie_H Administrator Posts: 11,242
Your disagreement with the host's post has been noted. Please move on. All of the hosts have different personalities and styles, and a host that is on your "better hosts" list is definitely on someone else's "worst hosts" list. That's just the way it is - members & hosts alike have different preferences, tolerances, and personalities.

One single remark that you've chosen to focus on doesn't discount all of the other comments and help provided by that host. FWIW, I believe that ALL of our hosts are quality, each with his/her own areas of strong expertise.

Newish meaning 05 and newer. should have been clearer i suppose. the dealers all offer the galves number, just wondering if the dealer would step up to the baja since they're rare. the comments here are largely negative, but, when i read customer reviews they are positive. besides, the outbacks are plentiful. if the wholesale is the same. why not add the baja to inventory as a niche vehicle and peddle the rareness. just a thought.

thanks for the info, btw :)
  • Kirstie_HKirstie_H Administrator Posts: 11,242
"Rare" doesn't always mean desirable, BUT... IMO, your best bet on this would be to call or visit some Subaru dealerships without any Bajas on the lot. You never know - they may have a buyer looking for a Baja, which might get you a better swap deal.

All you can do is go to a dealer and try. You never know. Odds are, they will want SOME kind of money. I mean, even if just fees and a $500 kicker or something. It is possible, just not probable.

I'm not sure what Galves is since it isn't used in my neck of the woods.

Dealers rely on actual auction results more than they do the "books".

They aren't going to pay more for a car than they can buy them for at the auction.

Sometimes the books can be way off as the market can change so quickly.

You might want to check with your local Subaru dealer. As rare as those Bajas are, it's just possible they have a customer who has been waiting for one to show up.

I thought we've discussed this, isell.(?)

Anyhoo, Galves is a northeast thing. 95% of the dealers here rely on it completely and without question. Kind of odd, but true. And, in my admittedly limited experience, it does follow auction values very tightly, so its not a typical book.

You could get a manual EX? Huh.
And what about the moonroof? You didn't mention it, but that's standard on EX, right?

Just as we're discussing Galves... I think it fails on this particular car. It doesn't show a deduct for manual trans. I know that's not right. Usually you are talking AT LEAST a $500 hit.

So I'm going to go "off book," and say you are looking at $10,500-$11k.
