And hey, nothing could possibly go wrong with a 150K BMW, right?

I actually have a strong attraction to the Acura integra too. 2000 MY LS 5 speed. Black over tan, looks real clean, at a Toyota dealer. Really does not show the fact that it has 174K on it.
but, if it is as clean and strong as the dealer claims, should be fine for me at the rate I'll put miles on it. besides, I already have 1 2000 Acura with 170,000 miles on it, and that is the infamous V6 AT combo!
I figure (looking at Edmunds) that $2,500 is probably all the money on it, but have a sneaking suspicion it could creep up over 3K. And this one has a reserve, so who know what they insist on getting!

No way! Pre-iDrive/Pre-Bangle BMWs are like land--they're not making any more of them!
eBay auctions with a reserve are kind of a strange animal... Many of them don't attract many bids, and many of them don't sell. Then you have the ones with "no reserve" that have a starting bid way above retail. :confuse:
I agree with the auctions. Reserves are a pain, especially when it seems they are way higher than realistic. And setting a minimum opening bid is setting a reserve, they just tell you what it is up front!
Much less enticing figuring out value and bidding limits when odds are the reserve is going to be way above that so you are wasting your time.

It's usually worked out well for me, starting with a 1983 Malibu wagon!
>> You only go around once in life, have to make the most of it!
And you should minimize the time spent under a car fixing stuff you didn't break.
BMWs are nothing to be afraid of, *IF* they have been maintained. Friend of mine has a '97 328 that he bought new. That car looks like new from 15 ft. On top of which, it's white, so any blemish shows up like crazy. Some years ago he did have some cosmetic rust removal done, but for a 16-year-old daily driver in the rust belt, that's amazing.
He's had nothing out of the ordinary go wrong, and while I don't know how many miles it has, it's way over 100k. I drove it a couple of years ago and really liked it. Very solid and together. His other car is the final 6cyl M3, whatever year that was ('04? '05?) and has been good, too. I don't care for it; ridiculous power and too frou-frou inside for my teutonic tastes.
Just make sure you check any 3-series out carefully stem to stern. The earliers (E30?) are becoming sought-after, so the generation you're looking at is probably the way to go for an inexpensive driver.
Cheers -Mathias
$1500-$1800 on the bimmer.
although... looking at the pics of the bimmer, I could see it going higher. Seats are pretty darned nice for the age and miles.

High bid ended up being $2,550 (I was high bid at $2,500 up until the end).
That was a trade to the dealer, so no idea what they had in it, or what they were looking to get. I may call later just to see what the guy is planning. But hard to see them kicking it to auction and doing better at it.
The BMW, for the right price, could be fun, but no way I could get it inspected first. Would have to be a total pig in a poke "do you feel lucky punk" purchase.

Carmax assessed the condition as "good" and "well maintained." There are two small door dings that are really only visible in direct sunlight. Interior is in excellent condition.
Tires - 30% worn, Pirellis.
Brakes - don't know. The Nissan dealer inspected it at the last service a couple of months ago and indicated that everything was in working order.
Maintenance - everything up to date. New serpentine belt and battery, and Mobil1 in the crankcase.
I can tell that the front bumper was repainted before I bought it, and it's chipped along the bottom. No other paintwork. Carmax didn't mention this as being an issue.
Carmax helpfully reminded me that if I still own it on December 31, I will owe property tax on it next year... At this price range, will the trade-in value go up as people begin to receive tax refunds and cars become more scarce?

Yeah, $9,000 even. Edmunds and KBB both peg it in the $9,500-9,800 range, which is more what I was hoping for. It seems like something Carmax would put on their lot rather than wholesale.
I guess they don't haggle on the cars they buy either, huh? I would normally say offer it for $9500 take or leave, but I guess they'd leave it. :confuse:

Here's the killer: PA "R" title
The seller purchased this car after an insurance co totalled it. He replaced the front fender, upper A-arm, and strut... that's all. He has pictures of before and after.
Car drives and looks great.
I plan to purchase and drive for 50K-75K+ more miles, so I am not afraid of the title issue, but I would appreciate any feedback on the value. Seller is asking $10K
If I trade this car in in the future, how much of a hit will I take..... even if I have the photos?
Thanks for your help!
What's the market value, to see how much less you're paying?
A 2003 330xi in Florida with a clean title and 103,000 miles recently sold on eBay for $7,960.00. I'd run away unless the seller was in the $5,000 range.
Lowest had 98k miles and sold for $4k.

just another resource of asking prices.
I got a quote from them for my '07 Fusion in Sept 2010, around 10,500.
Didn't like it, so I kept it until June 2011.
Got 3k more for it after negotiating price for my new vehicle.
If I go forward with this vehicle I will have it inspected by a trusted frame expert.
Cheers,
Fred
Miles are nice and real low. It is the old style, though. Personally, I like the '03+ looks better. Anyway, being a 10-year-old Saab, I probably wouldn't be comfortable over $6k on it, even if i really had to have it.

You can buy Foresters now for invoice and get 0% financing for at least 3 years, maybe more.
The only Subaru I'd think about buying used is the unloved Tribeca, which I wouldn't want in the first place.
It's quite possible that what the dealers are telling you is right on the money.
This is kinda the "cheap" time of the year for used cars, esp. older ones, but I'm not sure that holds for AWD vehicles...
Good luck,
-Mathias
2010, dark blue, AT, moonroof, cloth seats. Not sure miles, but maybe 30? Nothing I recall being high.
except the price. "no need to haggle" tag of $16,995. 17K for a 3 YO preza? How much more could it cost to get a comparable one brand new?

This appears to be a Service Loaner Vehicle now offered for sale. I don't know where to start on these sorts of vehicles in regards to value. I am aware of course that this is a used car. KBB retail says $40K, but that is what the sticker was for this car.
