OK, this is the one I really wanted. Showed my wife. She liked it a lot better too. So, any clue (yes, I know the drill!) of about what this should be worth if it is "all there"?

And hey, nothing could possibly go wrong with a 150K BMW, right?

I need to let TJC just buy my car. He found more I liked in 5 minutes than I do in a week.

I actually have a strong attraction to the Acura integra too. 2000 MY LS 5 speed. Black over tan, looks real clean, at a Toyota dealer. Really does not show the fact that it has 174K on it.

but, if it is as clean and strong as the dealer claims, should be fine for me at the rate I'll put miles on it. besides, I already have 1 2000 Acura with 170,000 miles on it, and that is the infamous V6 AT combo!

I figure (looking at Edmunds) that $2,500 is probably all the money on it, but have a sneaking suspicion it could creep up over 3K. And this one has a reserve, so who know what they insist on getting!

"There are a million E36s out there.."

No way! Pre-iDrive/Pre-Bangle BMWs are like land--they're not making any more of them! ;)
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,272
Looking at the instrument cluster, moonroof switch location, HVAC controls, etc., the Integra shares a tremendous amount of DNA with the Civic of that era. I think manufacturers nowadays do a better job of disguising it.

eBay auctions with a reserve are kind of a strange animal... Many of them don't attract many bids, and many of them don't sell. Then you have the ones with "no reserve" that have a starting bid way above retail. :confuse:
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,330
sharing a lot with a Civic of that era is not a bad thing. That was a good car, back when they were still "real" Hondas. Bulletproof and long lasting.

I agree with the auctions. Reserves are a pain, especially when it seems they are way higher than realistic. And setting a minimum opening bid is setting a reserve, they just tell you what it is up front!

Much less enticing figuring out value and bidding limits when odds are the reserve is going to be way above that so you are wasting your time.

Sharing a lot with that generation Civic is an understatement. The cars shared pretty much EVERYTHING (except the motor) which is not a bad thing. A "real" Honda like stickguy said with double wishbones at all 4 corners, lightweight, & fun to drive. Bulletproof without the boring. Honda engineered the platforms so well that parts on any Civic/Integra were completely interchangeable from something like 1988 through 2001. Many Integra engines from that era found their way into lighter Civic hatchbacks.

    >>I figure that being the last year of the run is always a good thing.

It's usually worked out well for me, starting with a 1983 Malibu wagon!

    >> You only go around once in life, have to make the most of it!

And you should minimize the time spent under a car fixing stuff you didn't break.
BMWs are nothing to be afraid of, *IF* they have been maintained. Friend of mine has a '97 328 that he bought new. That car looks like new from 15 ft. On top of which, it's white, so any blemish shows up like crazy. Some years ago he did have some cosmetic rust removal done, but for a 16-year-old daily driver in the rust belt, that's amazing.

He's had nothing out of the ordinary go wrong, and while I don't know how many miles it has, it's way over 100k. I drove it a couple of years ago and really liked it. Very solid and together. His other car is the final 6cyl M3, whatever year that was ('04? '05?) and has been good, too. I don't care for it; ridiculous power and too frou-frou inside for my teutonic tastes.

Just make sure you check any 3-series out carefully stem to stern. The earliers (E30?) are becoming sought-after, so the generation you're looking at is probably the way to go for an inexpensive driver.

    $2k-2500 auction on the Teg
    $1500-$1800 on the bimmer.

although... looking at the pics of the bimmer, I could see it going higher. Seats are pretty darned nice for the age and miles.

I may regret not going a little higher on the Integra. I just hate reserve auctions. No idea at all if you are just wasting your time with a crazy reserve.

High bid ended up being $2,550 (I was high bid at $2,500 up until the end).

That was a trade to the dealer, so no idea what they had in it, or what they were looking to get. I may call later just to see what the guy is planning. But hard to see them kicking it to auction and doing better at it.

The BMW, for the right price, could be fun, but no way I could get it inspected first. Would have to be a total pig in a poke "do you feel lucky punk" purchase.

Well, I now know what the dealer wanted. Got an email from the guy, who said $3,000 takes it. I think that is still a little steep, since I still have fees/taxes/DMV on top of that.

    72,000 miles
White metallic exterior, ivory cloth interior
No options beyond the standard 2.5S equipment
Carmax assessed the condition as "good" and "well maintained." There are two small door dings that are really only visible in direct sunlight. Interior is in excellent condition.
    Tires - 30% worn, Pirellis.
Brakes - don't know. The Nissan dealer inspected it at the last service a couple of months ago and indicated that everything was in working order.
Maintenance - everything up to date. New serpentine belt and battery, and Mobil1 in the crankcase.
I can tell that the front bumper was repainted before I bought it, and it's chipped along the bottom. No other paintwork. Carmax didn't mention this as being an issue.

Carmax helpfully reminded me that if I still own it on December 31, I will owe property tax on it next year... At this price range, will the trade-in value go up as people begin to receive tax refunds and cars become more scarce?

"Did CarMax put a number on it?"

Yeah, $9,000 even. Edmunds and KBB both peg it in the $9,500-9,800 range, which is more what I was hoping for. It seems like something Carmax would put on their lot rather than wholesale.

hmmm... well... I'm a tad surprised. Carmax is usually high, but that number is what you could expect at any dealer. Could be they recognize that there are DOZENS of this car at the auction, so there is no need to step up on it. They are floating right around $10k at the block. They seem to do a bit better in warmer states, for some reason.

I guess they don't haggle on the cars they buy either, huh? I would normally say offer it for $9500 take or leave, but I guess they'd leave it. :confuse:

I am considering purchasing this car:

    2004 BMW 330xi
    94,000 mi
    Silver with Black Interior
    Premium and Cold Weather packages

Here's the killer: PA "R" title
The seller purchased this car after an insurance co totalled it. He replaced the front fender, upper A-arm, and strut... that's all. He has pictures of before and after.

    Car drives and looks great.

I plan to purchase and drive for 50K-75K+ more miles, so I am not afraid of the title issue, but I would appreciate any feedback on the value. Seller is asking $10K

If I trade this car in in the future, how much of a hit will I take..... even if I have the photos?

    Thanks for your help!
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
It's not even about loss of value, some buyers will just turn away. So it might be harder to sell regardless of price.

What's the market value, to see how much less you're paying?
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,272
It's an $8,500 car with a clean title. A general rule is that a salvage/rebuilt vehicle is worth only 2/3 the price of a vehicle without that history. In this case, that's closer to $5,500. You will never know if there was frame damage without a professional inspection. It will be difficult to sell the car later with a rebuilt title.

A 2003 330xi in Florida with a clean title and 103,000 miles recently sold on eBay for $7,960.00. I'd run away unless the seller was in the $5,000 range.

Miles are nice and low. The only one close to it had 68k miles and sold for $10,200. So I think Galves is a bit high in this case (that almost never happens). If I was a dealer, I'd be more comfortable at $9k.

clean ones are $9500-$10k at dealer auction, which means I'd pay $12k retail.

Someone said 2/3? I say 1/2. So $6k absolute MAX if it all checked out.

Didn't like it, so I kept it until June 2011.

I have nothing on this. Only 1 such vehicle has crossed the block this year, and that was 11 months ago, so its useless info. sorry.

Miles are nice and real low. It is the old style, though. Personally, I like the '03+ looks better. Anyway, being a 10-year-old Saab, I probably wouldn't be comfortable over $6k on it, even if i really had to have it.

I am shopping for a Forester and dealer don't seem to want to budge much even when they are selling there cars for 1000-3000 over Edmunds dealer retail. Most claim that they would lose money if they sold at Edmunds dealer retail prices. Many say they pay at or above Edmunds dealer retail just to acquire the cars weather it be from auctions or buying from wholesalers. Its my assumption that they are paying somewhere between Edmunds trade value and Edmunds Private Party value. What is the truth about Edmunds pricing? Are dealer really paying more for Foresters than Edmunds dealer retail and if so why does Edmunds not reflect this pricing.

    Adam
  • steine13steine13 Member Posts: 2,825
Subarus in general are so expensive and sought-after used that they are a better buy new.

You can buy Foresters now for invoice and get 0% financing for at least 3 years, maybe more.

The only Subaru I'd think about buying used is the unloved Tribeca, which I wouldn't want in the first place.

It's quite possible that what the dealers are telling you is right on the money.

This is kinda the "cheap" time of the year for used cars, esp. older ones, but I'm not sure that holds for AWD vehicles...

    Good luck,
    -Mathias

I happened to be at a Toyota dealer today, on the used car lot. While waiting for the salesguy to go find a car, I looked at what they had. Mostly relatively normal looking prices (for a dealer) on middle-aged Yotas. But, they also had a nice looking Imprezza.

2010, dark blue, AT, moonroof, cloth seats. Not sure miles, but maybe 30? Nothing I recall being high.

except the price. "no need to haggle" tag of $16,995. 17K for a 3 YO preza? How much more could it cost to get a comparable one brand new?

2004: 330xi, Black, 85K, Same options, Black BMW wheels, 3rd owner with clean carfax, perfect condition. Seller asking $14,500.

Subarus just get absolutely silly money on the used market. That 2010 Impreza you saw probably stickered somewhere just under $21K and probably drove away right around 20. The 2012 Impreza Premiums with a moonroof and CVT stickered in the 22s.

Okay I hate to ask you this...but I am stuck on this one vehicle in particular. Looking to trade in my 2004 Toyota Sienna XLE Limited van on a 2011 Ford Explorer Limited. It has 28,000 miles on it, and the internet "asking price" is around 31,000. It is loaded, but doesn't have DVD or a moonroof. I don't know if that is a good deal. Also, it is nearing the end of the month, and the year. Wouldn't the dealer want to get rid of it, since they've had it since early September?! I need to know your opinion, please.

They are trading for a bit north of $28k, so it seems they are already being pretty aggressive at $31k. Lack of moonroof and DVD on a Limited is probably why its still sitting there. They may be willing to cut it loose for $30k, but I wouldn't count on it.

How do you know how long they've had it?

I looked on the carfax report and it states when the dealer acquired it. I know that whomever owned it traded it in for a maxima. He did tell me yesterday that he would go down to 30,900. I still feel as if Torres a better deal elsewhere to be made.

looks nice. and low miles. 6K off sticker is a decent amount, though probably not much less than you could have gotten it for new as a leftover (I assume the 12's are gone by now? If not, a good way to go).

from the carfax, it has only been in service for less than 6 months, so plenty of warranty left.
