The car is tight in the back seat, but that's not much of a problem for me since I am single and have no kids.
Otherwise I've been pretty lucky. Although the passenger's side mirror seems to be a little mis-aligned on the Protege and when it's cold at about 3000 RPM there is a strange rattling type noise coming from the engine and sometimes there is a squeak coming from my gear box when it's cold. Other than that the car has been great and none of those are serious problems yet, just annoyances. It just seems to me that Hondas are screwed together a bit better than the Protege.
Jettas do have a tight back seat...I remember when I was looking to buy one there was NOOO seat room behind my fiance (he's 6'6) and marginal room even when I was driving.
You had said $27-28K. New car dealer A, in connection with a possible trade-in, said 23.5 (this dealer has his own Chevy dealership across the street, so presumably was looking to sell it at his Chevy dealership, which did the appraisal); dealer B, also on a possible trade-in, started at 23.5 and went up to 24.5, which he then said was his final number (based, he said, on asking neighboring, apparently unaffiliated Chevy dealerships what they would pay); Carmax, on a straight cash purchase, said 24 even (less standard $159 processing fee).
The conversation with Carmax was interesting. The rep. said they had a really hard time coming up with a number, since the model is so new -- no experience. The way he said they came up with 24 was that this was the wholesale price that the Carmax operation in Kenosha pays the mfr. for new TrailBlazers with my configuration, and that they were essentially willing to pay me as if mine were a brand new vehicle. I say this was interesting because the "dealer invoice" price one sees on such sites as Edmunds.com for a TrailBlazer of my configuration is $30K, give or take a couple hundred.
QUESTIONS:
1) If what the Carmax guy said is true, is the "dealer invoice" one sees all the time these days simply a marketing trick designed to make people feel great about the "deal" they are getting, or to induce them to bargain less ("I'm only making $200 on this deal, what more do you want out of me?"), etc.? Even if you add holdback and other hidden things, I can't imagine the difference between "dealer invoice" and the actual price the dealer pays is $6K or 20% of the "dealer invoice" price. Looking at the other side of the coin, was the Carmax guy making it up when he said that his out-of-pocket cost for a new TB-LT is $24K? (I have found Carmax to be reputable in the past and to offer more than dealers for trades.)
2) Does it make sense to wait to sell the TB till after the $2002 rebate goes away? Or is the rebate in effect setting a new price that will apply even after the nominal rebate goes away?
3) Is 27-28K on a trade realistic at this point when Carmax, for example, is selling new TB-LT's for 29.7? Or are the dealers and Carmax really lowballing at 23.5-24.5. My own, perhaps very uninformed, thinking is that an essentially new, but nevertheless used, vehicle would have to be about 2K below the new price and, given what you guys have said, i.e., that dealer needs to make at least 1.5K on a trade, that a workable trade should be about 25.5 (assuming, generously, about $500 to get the vehicle ready for resale). Am I out of whack or has the market spoken?
Thank you!
$4,500-5,000ish.
Why not try $7,500/bo in the paper?
Bill
A Volkswagon dealer with a bad attitude? Why I'm shocked. Truly shocked....
Hi, Bill!
The low miles are nice... but from the sounds of it, this seems to be a pretty rough car I am afraid.
$1,500 would probably be "all the money" I'm afraid..
Bill
How ya doing man?
Bill
I was afraid you'd say Miami
Bill
First tho...
Color? Check.
Miles? Check.
Drivetrain? (buzzer noise)
Location? (Buzzer noise)
Trim Level? (Buzzer Noise)
I need more info
Bill
$5,000ish unless its a yukko color.
Also, where do you live?
Bill
Lemme make a few calls tomorrow on this one.
Also, Its a 7K mile 4x4 LT, right?
20% Back of invoice? Not that I know of. Terry?
Bill
Doing better. Drop me a line for details.
Will do!
Bill
Hmm... MAYBE... If its Pearl White... And IF its just super duper pefect.
Still, I think closer to $15,500 is doable.
Bill
Miles? Check.
Drivetrain? 4WD, Manual
Location? Nashville
Trim Level? I didn't get the L package....but I do have the running boards, cd, keyless entry, cruise crontrol, floor mat, power windows/locks
Thank you,
Tiffany
The Saturn is in very good condition, has 110,5 miles, cruise, cd etc. I just had it detailed out in hopes of getting a better deal on trade in.
I've checked numerous sites including this one re: trade-in/prvt party. Average is between 1700-3000. What should I be asking for?
Also, my Hubby is wanting to talk trade-in prior to van price negotiations...He's afraid they will offer less for our trade in if we settle on price of van first.
What's your opinion?
was curious what the trade in value is? Also was thinking of putting it up for sale for 7200 dollars does that sound righ?
This is in eastern Washington state.
Thanks
Adam
Buddy of mine is looking for an airport car, etc. Found a 1999 Saab 9-5 base sedan, silver/black leather, sunrooof, heated seats, tinted windows. In very good (not excellent condition). 72,000 miles on it and wants $12,500. Compared to TMV looks good, but . . . thoughts?
Adam
Thanks for replying and any advice.
If its otherwise clean.. $1,500ish. I can't see $3,000 really. MAYBE $2K if it looks like new.. but that would be a real push.
But... what matters is, the difference. Say this 98 Villager is a LS with say.. 50K miles. So you'd wanna buy it for no more than $12,500.
So you difference should be NO MORE than $11K. Does it matter if they sell you the car for $13,995 and give ya $3,000 for the trade? Nope
Gimme some info on the Merc too..
Bill
I think you should do the same myself..... Still, try it for 7,200. Someoen may grab it. Ya never know..
Bill
Wait. TELL ME this IS a 4x4, right? ok... nod your head... good
Its worth $15Kish.. maybe $15,700ish as a trade.
So add $2k or so to that as what you should get for it in a private sale (Ask $17,950.. grab $17Kish)
Bill
Bill
Buy it. Strong retail price. Real close to wholesale. Nice cars too.
Bill
$12K is the magic ##...
Bill
Normall this would be a $6K vehicle. But... the custom rims dont help it a dime. So put the stock ones back on there.
Since its had bodywork repairs.. it would be $5,500. With $1,000 in damage.. sheesh.. $3,500ish? Tough call without seeing it. fix it.
Bill
Assmuing it is clean... Miles are REAL low...
I have to think $4,500 coupe.. $4,000ish 4-door.
Whatcha think here Terry?
Bill
What happens is .. they pull off your whole dash, then they tear out the drivers seat .. KIDDING..!!
Your battery can be disconnected for a minute .. or the next 10 years, it will always show the exact miles that was displayed before hand.
Terry.
I obviously don't know there inventory.
But he walks in, looks at all the vehicles on board, and makes a decision on what to keep -- and what goes bye bye.
I'm sure you read my post about todays values ..and the November values. As you can see, they have stayed static.. of course on the particular vehicle you are interested in. This doesn't happen very often, but it has.(l..o..l..) --- The only thing I might recommend is, whether you buy from them or the dealer 60 miles away.. at this time, all the prices will be very similar. Which in some cases, makes a better buy because it didn't get slaughtered in the New Year count down.
But it seems, you guys are not too far away .. what about $36 and some change -- again it's your $$ and I'm not trying to spend it for you. But in this instance, the vehicle hasn't fallen in value ---
Sooo, let us know --- always do what's best for yourself.
Hey, by the way ..I have this real nice, clean Yugo I can let you have for a mere $9 grand - sound fair ?..l..o..l...
Terry.
I just bought 3 02's SUV's in the last 2 days at auction. 1 Trailblazer, 2 Bravado's ...
The 4X4 LT Chevy has 7,700 miles, slider, leather, BOSE, tow pack, 1SE equipment group, locking rear diff, r. boards, etc. I paid $26,950 plus the stuff. The original sticker was in the glove, MSRP was $36,000 dead even. (I probably watched 15/16 run through)
The Bravados' .. I paid $27,700 plus the stuff, 9k, it had a few more options, the sticker on one of those was $37,545.
I'm just a little surprised at the $23 ACV that your receiving. $23/$24 is what the 2WD's are doing ..
Unless, both of these dealers are still using rotary phones .. it's easy to find what the vehicles are doing via Manheim online. Across the board (including San Diego). Every one in the last 3 wks is doing "around" the same $$ from Orlando to NY ...
Well keep us posted ..
Terry.
I even made some calls on this thing. If it were in Orlando I can get her $26,500 cash $$ today for it.
Its GOTTA be worth $26-27K...
Bill
Since you paid 27K on a 36K MSRP and 28K on a 37K MSRP, does this suggest mine should be somewhat lower? Or do things like leather, roof, etc., lose most (albeit not all) of their value as soon as the car goes off the lot, and the engine size and 4WD are the key components of value?
Appreciate all your great insights,
Jim
I know they're interested in a V6, but don't know about trim level (SE, XLE, etc.). Low miles (10K to 20K).
Also, is there any noticable difference between used Camry prices and used Avalon prices? I'm thinking they might be able to get into a slightly used '02 Avalon for less than a Camry, seeing as how the Camry was redesigned for '02.
Thanks in advance!
Car is in showroom condition. No body work and no defects. Needs no conditioning at all. It has only 16k miles.
Do you think I could sell it for 16k? or close to it? (not trading it in)
What could I be looking at on a trade?
Thanks in advance.
