Run a Carfax .. then grab it.
Terry.
Thanks.
So we have a 99 Ford Ranger, sorry again, I would take that out, but I don't know how to back space ... We have a Mazda B3000, with like nooo miles on it, it's an auto ..(big help) and it's a plain Janer. Gotcha ..! -- plus, it has the Xtra cab with the "One life to live" doors ..
It's a vehicle that will do the mid $9's on a trade....
Would you like to supersize that order ..?
Terry. :-)
Hey Terry, what is a Voxenslobben that you and Bill keep talking about?
After a little over a week my new MDX is sweet....drives like a dream.
Have a good day,
MIKEinTN
The '99 Mazda is actually a rig that my in-laws are looking at. I was figuring that about $1500 over trade-in was a fair price at a dealer. Is that right?
Also, they were thinking about trading in their '87 Mazda 323 DX 4-dr. It's got an auto tranny and 90K miles (they've had it since new). It looks nice and straight but it's been wrecked twice (both t-bones) and someone deeply scratched the driver's window. I told them that they would be lucky to get a couple of hundred dollars for it and they might be better off selling it privately. Is that right?
Thanks again.
Take a deep breath ..!
Inhale ..!
Exhale ...!
Ok .. feel better ..? Gheeez .. you Knot head, you only paid $25ish for it --- that's only depreciating $2,333.33 a year. My Maserati depreciates more than that (if, I had one) ...
Just so you will sleep better tonight, and not prowl the neiborhood lookin' for the salesman that told you that figure -- how about $19,500 ..? that's if, it's clean, nice and needs -0-
Feel better ..? Good ..! Now go to your room. I have a plane to catch.
Watch him Bill, he's still a little shaky....
Terry. :-)
why would anyone trade-in car? To encourage
those out there - here is the example of my
last car change. We went through attempt to
trade in 1994 Ford Mustang convertible while
purchasing new Passat in 1998. Trade-in offer stuck hard on 7500$, "black book data" showing
and all the rest... So, we took an ad in local
newspaper, paid 115$, and within less than 2
weeks sold car for 11600$ (we had actually
chance to refuse other 11000$ offer, and neither
of us is in any kind of sales or has any
such inclanation...).
In other words, we'd lose about 1/3 of the
value being lazy and trading in, or in money:
about 4000$...
So, why would you haggle so much on price
of the new one and waste everything with trade-in...
?

Terry, thanks for confirming it is the Galves book. I went on a search engine and found that the Galves' site is simply www.galves.com. https://www.galves.com/galves/gal_info_consumer.jsp is decent reading, but Galves repeatedly mentions that they are a subscription service and try to offer reasons why (compared to the free quotes given by KBB and Edmunds).
Dusan, according to the aforementioned Galves page, trading in a car privately and then buying a new car from a dealer may give you a higher tax liability than having a dealer buy your trade-in, thereby only paying tax on the difference in cost between the two vehicles. See the "How trading your vehicle can save you hundreds!..." section. In your case, the spread is so large that the extra money you received easily offsets the additional tax liabilities, but some people might not be so lucky in the private party market.
And that Ody is worth every bit of $19,500 as long as he didnt back into a cement truck, or my ex mother in law or something.
IE, it better be a green light unit!
...life's been good to me so far....
Bill
If it was 1997, Green was good.
In 2002.. market tastes have changed. Silver better. Black is always a safe bet in the home of cheesesteaks.
Bill
Should I trade it in on a new Sequioa or try to sell it privately? Is it worth more to a Toyota dealer? What is the scoop?
Thanks
Ed
Just kidding. Seriously, that's a lot of money for that car, I would have done the same thing if I were in your shoes. There usually isn't that big a spread in private vs. trade-in value.

I am purchasing a new MDX. Is this vehicle worth anything to an Acura dealership? Can I find $5 for this? (Numbers seem to vary greatly in the high mile lux. category.) I live in Miami.
I shall thank y'all in advance for your consideration
You have the cash to pay it off early, so that's good. Um, but the '00 Explorer is the old style, right? I dunno the value, but 58k miles on a 2-3 year old car is kinda rough. Good luck.
#2: '96 Explorer XLT. 2WD, dark blue with tan leather. 6cyl (I think the old OHV), 96K miles. I think it's pretty clean, inside and out.
Both vehicles are in the San Diego area. What could they expect to get on trade in and retail for these?
I guess you could buy the car at the agreed upon ending value but I doubt if that price will be near what you will get on a trade in.
Good luck!
1) You can keep driving the Exploder until lease ends in Dec. -- It'll cost you $500/month plus excess mileage charges in Dec ($3-5k based on $.15/mile) plus misc. fees. Then you can buy the Exploder if you want.
2)You can pay off early as you suggested -- it'll cost you $4k + excess mileage ($3300 at $.15/mile)
plus misc. fees. and then you'll have to get another car.
Dunno what the impact of each option will be for your particular situation.

'95 Infinity J30, auto, black/tan, 77kmiles, clean
but not immaculate. Asking $8k.
'00 Infinity I30, auto, champagne/beige, 80kmiles (!), very clean, loaded. Asking $13,250.
Which one do you think is a better deal? The J30 price is reasonable for a 7-yo predecessor with a smallish interior/trunk.
The I30 is nice in every way except for the extremely high miles (should I even be concerned with that?). On the other hand, if anyone has a clean '93-'95 Legend GS they want to let go in NoCal, let me know!
Thanks.

She has a '94 Honda Accord LX, Automatic. It's that funky light green color inside and out. It's TMU, but she's been "tracking" the miles. Getting a new odometer next week. I asked her how she's tracking the miles if the ODO doesn't work, and she said based on the average miles she was getting per tank before. This has been going on for several months, and she estimates 142k miles. It's in Ohio. The condition is kind of rough. It has paint work from a minor accident (or two), the antenna is broken, the interior has a cigarette burn (she doesn't smoke, she bought it that way in '96). She said she just had the muffler replaced, but it still seems loud. She also reminded me that when she first bought it in '96, I commented that it rode rough for a Honda, and it's a lot worse now. So, what's the bad news? Obviously it's a wholesale car. What can she expect in trade? I think it would be difficult to sell herself, but she said if she did, she'd fix the antenna. :-) Edmunds hits it at $1900 trade, $2600 private sale based on rough condition.
Part two - she'd like to get a '99 or '00 Toyota Solara with all the toys. What are these doing at the auctions?
Thanks,
Q
OK... catch-up time. I figure Terry's either out buying or out playin with his boat...
Bill
If this truck is just MINT... I mean its really nice... $19Kish.. give or take a few hundred as a trade.
$21,995 in the paper, grab $21K but no less...
Bill
Bill
If its super clean, and really has 70K miles... And it isnt a bad color (Purple or Yellow or Brown or something)... Im thinking $4,000 give or take a couple hundred depending on condition.
Bill
Now, what kind of explorer is it? What color? 4WD/ 2WD? 2-door? 4-door? XLT? EB? etc?
Then I can give you an idea. Also, it does NOT pay to pay the lease off early, you also will still have mileage penalties. My guess is that it is worth running it tothe end and paying for the extra miles that you used as that may be cheaper.
Bill
Wholesale/Trade-In? I think this sounds like a $2,500/2,700 unit...
Sorry... But $5K buys, on a wholesale level, a much nicer, lower-mile car.
Bill
The Explorer? If its just mint... $6K as a trade-in, $7,900 in the paper, and I thinkyou can get that for it.
Bill
You should be able to buy that J30 for $7K-7,500... Its worth $5,500 or so wholesale.
That I30 is actually a very good buy at that price. And they can take the miles, thats for sure...
But thats how you have to buy megamilers.. you have to steal 'em.
Bill
The Accord. UGH! Yeah... $2,500ish trade up where you are, it might do better down her in FL but not enough to make it worthwhile.
Solaras? 99 SLEs loaded up, 25K miles... $15K give or take a nickel across the block.

THe bid fell thru, so, i'd like to make him an offer.
Aftermarket leather isnt a help or a hurt really.
Its worth in and around $11,500ish I think as a trade. $13,900/bo in the paper, grab $13K.
Bill
Enlighten us...
Anything of interest at the auctions? Any "bargain" Jags out there? X types for $15,000 yet?
Uhhh....
Truthfully? Hell if I know. If it was stock, I';d gather $8,500ish fair retail... so, with those mods...$10K might be reasonable tothe right buyer.
But I am the wrong dummy here...
Sorry man.
Bill
Nah... lets see... what did I buy today....
Not too much really. We got a few S-Types... 00 Lease returns and some 01 "program" cars (Ex-Budget)....
A 96 XJR for my store, a 92 Vanden Plas majestic for my store.. An 00 XKR for a customer...Some other sedans for me to retail...
And some 99+ XJs for Wholesale clients...
But, the market is coming back to normalcy, but it isnt THAT cheap yet
It'll be late 2004 or so, seriously, when the Xs get that cheap..and then only high-milers...
Bill
Will be looking for both a sedan and SUV within 90 days. Will need one within a month, the other can wait. Don't care which one first.
SUV, prefer Grand Cherokee (or larger). Prefer 4WD for our heavy Atlanta snowfalls. I'm thinking a 98 Limited would do the trick, if I can find one with 35K miles or so...
Sedan, can be more creative here. Am thinking about a 2000 Lincoln LS, 98 LS400, or 98-99 XJ. (or anything similar).
Am thinking that the SUV is easier, plus I have a better idea of what I want. The sedan I can wait for the right "market conditions".
Suggestions for the above ramblings are appreciated.
