Please see post #646. I think you missed it while we were exchanging posts yesterday. I'm actually starting to waiver on the A4 if I can get a New Passat, now. But I think I would miss the AWD and auto climate controls (I would get a GLS 1.8T fully loaded, but with 5 speed). I love cars, but I hate shopping for them.
It was the '99 JGC Laredo that I traded..>I was curious to see what a dealer might ask for the car retail, so I plugged the numbers into both Edmunds and Kelly. Edmunds showed around $19K and Kelly showed $24K for the same car.....I got $20K trade-in, so I'm thinking Kelly was more accurate....just a curiosity question.
Gotcha. Figure that there's 20% or so markup on the average $15-30K used car. $19K retail seems real low.. Like we'd said, they're wholesaling for that.
Unfortunately, you can't get 4Motion with a 5 speed, or it would be so. I am trying to decide if the AWD, auto climate control and better stereo, among other things, is worth the $3k or so the Audi will cost me over the Passat. Personally, up here in Denver, I prefer the 1.8T to the V6 (VW and Audi).
I have a pretty naive question, and I'm sorry if this board doesn't deal with this type of problems. I want to buy a new car. Before buying a new car I need to sell an old one. What options do I have? The car I am thinking to sell is: 2000 BMW M-coupe, 20,000 miles with minor dents on rear bumper; mechanically perfect. The car I want to buy is a new 2001 BMW M3. Naturally, before buying a new expensive car a need to sell 1 year old expensive car. I understand that I have at least 2 option: trade in, and proivate sell. Do I have some other possibilities? I hope that somebody will be able to explain me how to deal with my problem Thanks in advance!
Slowest Jag I've ever driven? Mine in Boulder! That Passat really is nice.. I forgot about the 4mo only being tiptronic. And those start getting up there.
Why doncha go drive a Passat silly? See if ya like it. And, while the 2001.5s are really nice, there's also like $2K of trunk money on the 2000s, and I still suspect that serious dealing on the 2001.5s is not the norm.
What is "$1,800 sales tax credit at 6%". You mean that if i sell a car i get a tax return? "Have you considered trading it in?" - Yes it is a first thing which comes to the mind. Isn't it more beneficiary somehow to disconnect buying car from selling it. I mean is the trade in price more or less equal to the price I can get when just selling the used car to the dealership?
I'm waiting for my local dealer to get a 2001.5 with 5 speed and 1.8T so I can drive it. I drove the reg. 2001 and it was allright, but those extra 20 ponies do make a difference.
I think you are in CA, so I assume that the sales tax credit applies there. Would I be correct? Also, does it make a difference if the trade is off a lease?
I don't understand the all details, but the jist of it is that the turbo loses less power at higher altitudes than normally aspirated engines do. Therefore, the engines have similar power at higher altitudes, but I'm guessing the V6 is significantly more powerful at lower altitudes. Yes, it applies to autos, too - it's not the transmission, it's the engine.
Hey guys. Great forum. I've lurked for a long time and finally feel like I have some relevant input. Don't quote me on this but I assume the reason turbo's are less susceptible to higher altitudes is as follows:
Turbos and intercoolers compress (make more dense)and cool the air being fed into the cylinders. Air is naturally less dense at higher altitudes. Normally aspirated cars are sucking in less dense air, therefore less energy output from the engine. I would imagine that turbocharged engines, since they are artificially compressing the ambient air, would be less effected by the density of the incoming air.
Brentwood...help!! I am looking at a "new" 2000 Tundra at a Toyota dealership. They have plenty of 2001's on the lot and are discounting those by about 10 - 12%. What should I expect off MSRP (or invoice) for such a vehice? It has 1300 miles and no longer has a "new car smell". I like the vehicle, but not sure about the correct price. Thanks in advance!!!
Just a little food for thought....I'm not sure what part of the country you are from...."But" if you are in or around Mich to NY and down thru the south east...Chances are, you can get one for a couple hundred over --this is big Ford, Dodge and Chevy buyers ( trucks )...But, no matter where, Tundra's are not burning up the street's (I like them) but they have yet to "make" market....At the auctions, the Tundra's V8 4x4 Ltd Excab a rolling around $21,000 + -
Just wanted to thank you again for when you gave me an estimate on my 2000 Intrepid's value. Since then, it's now over 40,000 miles, so I'm sure it's a wholesale piece!
I have a co-worker, whose mom has a 1999, base Intrepid, but with a few options like power seats, remote entry, etc. It's kind of a gray-ish silver. Anyway, she wants to trade it in, and the dealer offered her $11,000 for it. It only has 10,000 miles on it. Does $11,000 sound about right to you?
Personally, I think she's a fool for wanting to get rid of it so soon. I don't know how much she paid for it, but her husband was a Chrysler employee, so they get to buy the things at-cost (at whose cost, I don't know).
I'm almost tempted to offer her $11,000 for it and buy it myself...that way I'd have a nice car and one to rag out. I'd also be stuck with 2 car payments, though :-( And I still owe about $15,300 on mine, so I'm stuck with it for awhile!
Still, I know a couple people who might be interested in a car like that. If I had one of them offer her $11,000 for it, would that be a good deal? I almost bought her last trade-in, a '94 Intrepid 3.3 with 30K miles, for the $7500 the dealer offered her (back in the summer of '99)
I don't mean to chime in...but I thought, maybe this could help. I have just seen about 200 Intrepids (among 3,000 other brands ) run through a Manheim auction on wednesday..so this will give you an idea....2000 ES 's ( leather, 6 cd everything, but a -P.roof with 12-15 K are running around $12,800 to $13,200....So, if mom is getting $11,000 for a 99 base ..'real money'..that's a very good deal...so, she can sleep easy on that, even with low miles most would be looking around 10,000 ish.
Thanks guys! I really appreciate the input...btw...I am in TN. Just wondering, why are leftovers rarely a good buy? Is it just because you start out with a year old car? Just curious...
If you don't drive many miles a year, you take a really big depreciation hit as you car is immediately a year old or more when you drive it away. So if you are a low milage driver and trade often, not a good deal, IMHO.
But...
If you drive higher miles and keep the car just the right amount of time to make the mileage for that model year to look pretty standard, it MIGHT be a good buy.
For example, let's say you put 15K on a car in a year. After three years, your car will have 45K on the clock. But if it is a 4 year old car, 45K probably doesn't hurt as bad as on a three year old car. Probably really depends on the car.
However, the downside is the "insured" value. You could find yourself in the situation where you owe more on it than the insurance paid off. But to be fair, most people who put little down and finance for 5 years are in the same boat.
Maybe you should disregard all of this if it doesn't make sense, I've had 4 hours sleep the past 48, and I've had sooooo much coffee, that I can't sleep yet.
They arent going berserk on it, but they arent stealing it. I think that $11K is strong on that car. It's just over average book, which a car like that has to be super nice to do.
If you drive 30K a year, then buying a leftover with strong resale can be the cheapest way to go. Ditto if you do 20K a year and buy a leftover and trade every 2 years.
Right now a 99 with 30K is ok. Doesnt matter if it's 12 or 24 months old. Ditto with a 98 with 40K.
But a 99 with 40K is tough... as is a 2000 with 30K.
I am not able to follow the Town Hall as closely as in the past and may have missed the disclosure. If my question is redundant, please accept my apology. Best wishes for success as a dealer and THANKS to brentwoodvolvo for the excellent information you have provided.
Hi folks, I've been reading this forum and although I don't have a specific question I'd just like to thank brentwoodvolvo and the others in the business who have helped out folks here. I think it's good to be able to get a "behind the scenes" look at how a dealer values trade-ins and to get an honest idea of actual "trade-in" value of your vehicle. You're providing a valuable rescource here.
I am curious though. Do you do this because it's fun or you like to help folks or both? Does this help keep you in practice? Or do you do so much of it that it's almost second nature?
I won't answer for brentwood...I just want to say it's too bad the dealersw don't get more notes of appreciation from folks. I used to try to help out when i could but i grew weary from the majority of folks questioning the integrity of the dealers. It would appear brentwood has broken through that barrier somewhat.
I think it's more that I enjoy it, that maybe I'm trying to show that we're not all sleazebags (Although some people in here are pretty obnoxious towards us regardless... I generally dont help them out) and it's fun.
I traded-in my Accord EX V6 for $14,000. The dealer first offered $13,200. Overall, I spent about 1.5 hour at the dealer including 20 minute test drive and lunch. I offered what I though was a fair value on my trade-in as well as the vehicle that I was shopping for. (BMW Z3 3.0) The price I got for BMW was about $4,000 off of MSRP. (My guess is I could have gotten $500 more off if I stayed but it's not in my nature to haggle/negotiate.....) Going to the dealer armed with info that I got from this site helped me alot.
Do you know of any sort of "auction" for private party used car sales - like a place where a person can take their car and have other people bid on it? I used to live in florida and i thought I remember there being someplace like that near miami. Maybe someone knows of such a place...not necessarily in Florida.
Why I'm asking is that after two months of advertising and not showing my car to anyone I have to start getting creative with methods of selling it. A Dealer quoted me $7500 which is way low and i had to work him up but he only went as far as $8300, and I remember you telling another '98 Monte Carlo owner that average wholesale is running at about that range.
I think that the problem is not with my car but rather where I live. The market here is just not in favor of these kind of cars.
I'm thinking that there might be someplace like that in Florida because a lot of used cars in florida end up as exports.
You tried eBay? I dont know of any Public Auctions here in Orlando, or in South Florida. Only ones I know are dealer auctions and you'd have to have a dealer bring the car and.. well.. you know...
Well, I searched what they had on auction and there are very few "daily driver" late model cars, plus there's a fee, and i don't think I'd have any luck. Who knows, i may have to try it.
There isn't really any "public" auctions.....I guess the closet thing would be in Las Vegas, and that runs twice a month at Harrah's ..and that is, primo 57 chevy's, 63 split window Vette's, 47 Hudson's ( Seinfelds 60 Porshe ran last month ).....vehicles like that ....so, it a very special type auction, but anyone can attend ( bring some very large monies )
Like Bill had mentioned....You can go Ebay - or clean her up...make it look look a diamond put it in the best papers in your area.
My wife drives a 2000 Acura TL w/o nav. Color is silver. About 16000 miles. She wants the TL S-type when it comes out. I figure when the time comes, our TL will have about 20000 miles. Also, we have a aftermarket stereo system-$5000 worth-all new speakers, kick panels, sub-woofer, amps, head unit and in-dash eq,..custom installation. If I trade the car in, will the stereo enhance or depreciate the trade in value?
Oh one more question. When we got our TL, we initially wanted the nav. But they didn't have any on the lot. We were also told by the sales lady that the nav will hurt the resale value. Is this true??
YANK IT OUT! If anything I'll bid that car a bit lower because of the modifications.
Yank it out and put it on eBay or put it in the Type S or something.
And as far as Navi goes.. I wouldnt say that it hurts resale but it doesnt really ad to the car's resale value either. Car might as well have a gold package instead. I'll say this:
The Average Wholesale price, roughly, of all 2000 3.2TLs now is in the upper $23Ks The Average Wholesale price, roughly, of all 2000 Navi's now is in the low $24Ks
yeah, i do think that applies here. I've checked the classifieds in Nashville (100 mi from here) and there are a bunch of Monte's for sale, all running in the $12K range, so there is some action there. by contrast there are NO Monte's advertised here except mine and when there was another one they were asking DIRT CHEAP.
So, i might try an ad in the nashville newspaper - what the heck. So if I have to drive 100 mi to sell my car at this point I'll even give the buyer a free tankful! LOL

What kind of car we talking about here?

Guess who just bought a 2001.5 GLX v6 5-sp?
I bought it for my cousin but I got to use it for a week before she picked it up. WOW!
FOr what that A4 will run ya.. go grab a 4Motion GLX V6... (U need the 4mo up there methinks).
It's an amazing car. I liked it almost as much as the Jag.

$24K Seems fair to me.

Let me know how you make out.

Trying to sell an expensive car with damage is very very tough, and you wont get a decent price for it. Ditto on the trade.
Have you considered trading it in? If that car is worth, say, $30K, You'd also be looking at a $1,800 sales tax credit at 6%.
I'd look into those first.
Bill
Slowest Jag I've ever driven? Mine in Boulder! That Passat really is nice.. I forgot about the 4mo only being tiptronic. And those start getting up there.

"Have you considered trading it in?" - Yes it is a first thing which comes to the mind.
Isn't it more beneficiary somehow to disconnect buying car from selling it. I mean is the trade in price more or less equal to the price I can get when just selling the used car to the dealership?
Example:
Sale Price of new car: $25,000
Less Trade-In Value: ($10,000)
Trade Difference: $15,000
In this case the taxable amount is $15,000
Say sales tax is 6%, in this case you'd pay sales tax of $900, versus $1,500 on $25,000.
So your trade-in also saved you $600 in sales tax.
This is why if you have a very valuable trade, the sales tax credit can often make selling the car yourself seem a lot less worthwhile.

Makes sense to me come to think of it... Propeller-Driven Airplanes used turbochargers, right?
Bill
Turbos and intercoolers compress (make more dense)and cool the air being fed into the cylinders. Air is naturally less dense at higher altitudes. Normally aspirated cars are sucking in less dense air, therefore less energy output from the engine. I would imagine that turbocharged engines, since they are artificially compressing the ambient air, would be less effected by the density of the incoming air.
Hope this makes sense.
To be fair I have no idea where that truck ought to sell.
However, I'm sure the dealer wants to get rid of it, But bear these two things in mind:
1) I dont think there are any incentives on 2000s anymore.
2) Leftovers are rarely a good buy unless you get like another 10% off or something. Even then I'd say to go with a 2001.
And I really dont have much wholesale data on those to give you an idea of a retail price as a used car.
Bill
ps- go for the 01
Good luck,
Terry.

I've been enjoying the SVT Contour for about a month now. The 99SE is slowing leaving.
I just sold the aftermarket wheels and tires for a little less than half what I paid for 'em two years ago.
Not too bad. Now off for some Borbet type T's and tires in the next few weeks.
And of course, thanks again for your great service.
