Yeah, I knew the $22 was off, but I was trying to figure what a reasonable number would be. After all, I have a huge swing. I was thinking that since the black book was nearly 21, that I wouldn't be out of line thinking 18 or 19.
I have a bright red '97 Chevy Cavalier 2.2L, 4dr sedan with about 65,000 miles. I'm thinking about trading it in or selling it soon. How much can i expect to get? Also, would it be better for me to trade it in, or sell it privately? Oh, and I'm in Iowa. The car has no mechanical problems and only slight blemishes in the paint, nothing noticeable.
The Toyota dealer told me that this is the case and I shouldn't consider one without. They told me I would get back at least half of the cost at resale time 4-6 years down the road. True or false?
Your going to get a little help from the topper ..and it's an auto. I would surmise, that's new rubber along with those chromes...
Miles are just about ok .. so, if it's nice and lookin' 01 on the outside and no hand grenade fights on the inside -- this should run "around" $9/$9,5ish..
where you would hit a 2000 A4 with 26,000 miles 1.8 quattro. dark blue over tan leather. 5-speed. some paintwork but it was a good job. all the standard options + a sunroof.
1995 Merc Mystique, auto, v6, white ext. blue int, 52K, Pwr locks, windows, mirrors, keyless entry, CD, heated mirrors, ABS, traction control, Cruise, entry lighting, 10K left on tires, paint excellent, interior very good. Scratch on lower windshield from wiper blade mishap(dealer had baited me with a high price and then dropped price $500 claining a new winshield would be needed - I priced a windshield ($250) also could be buffed out - scatch is not in line of site)
What do you think, trade it or sell it myself. I have all service records.
...... It has leather right ..? This vehicle has no miles for the year.
It's the right color whether you live in Boston or Miami, it also has the 24v V6 and all the toys ... on a trade you might see $3/$3,5.
Me personally .. I would go down Retail Rd.
Low mileage vehicles are hard to find, if it's nice and clean and looks 00 ..I would have detailed and drop a real nice "spunky" ad in the biggest newspaper for $4,950, then let someone pull my nails out til I screamed $4,5 ... then take that money and buy a new Ferrari .. l.o.l...
Sports pkg, auto, cd changer, & single-disc player (fully loaded), 31k, dark blue on beige leather, dealer-maintained. Beautiful except for a couple of hairlike scratches on the trunk lid and a shallow, 1" wide dent in the hood. (no paint chipping) I'm in the SF bay area- not sure how much it varies from the rest of the country.
Is it worth trading this in or should I just donate it? Maroon - 3 door - 93500 miles - cruise control - privacy glass - cassette - V6 - small amt out rust on edge of driver's door where door was forced open in a wind tunnel and pushed into the front panel. Thanks for your help!
Ok - Here's the missing info from the first post... Caravan lives in South Jersey, and is a Base Model, with a number of LE type upgrades - i.e., AM/FM Casette; Tinted Glass; Floor Mats; Pinstripe, V6 Automatic, Maroon/Gray and 93,000 miles.
Negatives:
Small rust, along the edge of the driver side doorframe as we mentioned, and the automatic latch for the Rear Hatch does not work. Air conditioning is sporadic, and the front of the cupholder is broken.
If this doesn't give you enough to go on, please let us know. Thanks!

Oh, and yes, your crystal ball is working - we are the '01 Windstar folks! That's impressive!
So here I was, all set to get a nice Subaru or something, when our van shows serious signs of wanting to fall apart ['92 Aerostar, surprise].
So I need something in a nice used minivan... Either a shortbox GM minivan or a Toyota Sienna will fill the bill. We havee serious size constraints in our garage, and the big 'uns won't fit right -- we tried.. Chryslers are out, too -- nice van, lousy transmissions.
So: '98 or '99 Chevy Venture LS (Montana, Silhouette), short wheelbase, say 60k miles, how much wholesale?
'98 or '99 Toyota Sienna, CE or LE, 60k miles, how much? And what's availability on these -- they are hard to find around here... and when you do, they have "whorehouse prices" on them...
With Toyota's new policy on sludge, the Sienna has become a candidate again to purchase used.
I can't give a professional opinion but here in Texas used Siennas are really soft. I think it is due to new selling at invoice minus a $1K rebate. I'm seeing LE's w/toys mid 30's on miles advertised at $18K-20K here. It is tempting me to add one to the fleet if I can get $16.5-17K.
It's a base, no help there-- it's the right color, the miles are just ..ok -- no rear air doesn't help this a bit. And yes, a drivers door is a cult thing, and people love em'. ..l.o.l..
So if it has new tires, little or no parking lot kisses and it's a nice vehicle .. then you are lookin' in and around $11ish on a trade...
Looking for a trade-in value for this Accord. Has Alpine sound system and remote start with remote entry. All the power options. The car is like day-one new. All maintenance records and one owner. The color is Ruby Red Pearl and the car has 44,000 miles on it. I live in Dayton Ohio.
ok, one last try. My 1996 grand caravan is the new style, it is GRAND, it has 100k miles. It only has the options I indicated. Does not have power windows, locks, or any of that. It is a 3.0, shifts great, interior is fine, for options has only, the 3.0, driver side slider, AC, Cassette, tinted windows. Parking lot scratches are just that. Not deep enough to rust. Again, Edmunds puts the trade in at $4700, if average condition. $2000 seems way too low.
Just out of curiosity, at what mileage if any do you consider a car unfit to keep on the lot? Does condition play a part in the decision up to even 100,000 miles or more or is there just some point where it's got too many miles for anythign other than auction? What's the most amount of miles you've had on a used car on your lot?
speaking as a former banker, two of the three banks in my past wouldn't allow a car to be used as collateral if it had greater than 80,000 miles. Dealer financing sources are a little more liberal, but units do get harder to finance as the miles go up.
I am by far no expert (like Bill or Terry) , but I do read the Maxima boards quite a bit. I have an '01 I30 myself. Anyways, I'm thinking that isn't the greatest deal on an '01 Max with 10k miles. I have seen brand new '02 GLE's going for around the $25k range with the under invoice pricing and the $1,000 rebates. That would only be about $2,500 more than what the '01 you described is at. There has to be more of a separation than that I would think to make me want to buy an '01.
I traded that Accord in on a 02 4x4 Ram quad cab. The ram was an employee purchase, but that's still no reason to just give the Accord away. I finally got them up to $12,800 for the Honda, so I guess I didn't do so bad after all, especially when you consider that the Ram had a $32,800 sticker and I paid $26,400 plus tax.
Thanks for the info last week on my daughters 96 Protege LX and buying a used 2001 Protege LX. She wants to buy a green car, I have told her that green is probably a bad color as far as resale is concerned. TRUE? Is this regional, or does it matter. She currently lives in the Detroit area, I live in Southern AZ. Thanks..we go shopping this Friday in Detroit for either a used 2001 or new 2002 Protege LX. I recommended the "sand" color
SE stands for Special Edition, one step above the LX and one below a EX, normally produced once every 4 years. Thanks for all the information, people like you make this a great site!!!
jbolt: I think champagne/gold is the safest bet. silver is popular right now but that could change. White wouldn't be too bad but it would look like a rental car. There's always black which is my personal favorite but if she ever moves south it could hurt her. So if she likes the "sand" then that's what I would buy.
Thanks you very much!Could you tell me what trade-in price I should settle with for a 1996 VW Jetta Trek. It's clean, no-smoker car. Pain is in good condition with 2 body jobs to fix minor dents. 70,000miles and no real problems the whole time I've had the car. Regular maintenance that I have records of.
What would be a good private party selling price for this vehicle. Information: Chicagoland, 67K miles, XLT, White, long bed, sliding rear window, stick, 3.0 engine. Thanks for your help.
Color makes a play here... Not as much on a protege as on, say, a 99 528i (Oh, you got Brown? Dumpkoff!!!)
So, get what you like. In 3 years, Silver vs Green, if it was the same as today.. oh.. $500 or so. Is that worth it to save $500 to live with a color you dont like? I dont think so myself.
Just no Brown, NO Purple, etc...
But Champagne, Silver, White, Black (Not where Palm Trees grow tho..) are all pretty safe.
Where do you live? What color is it? Does it have Power windows/locks/sunroof/mirrors/Sunroof/CD/alloys? Automatic or do you have to move a little stick around to make the car go? What color is it? Where was it painted? Where is the car located? ad nauseum...
A name like Car Dave and ya drive a truck. OK... whatever...
Miles are a touch stiff, and we have to move a little stick-looking-thing that pops out of the floor to make it move. Nein help there....
Still, it is a ranger, and if its clean... Hmm.. Its worth $4,500ish wholesale I think, but Terry would hit this truck a lot better than I would.
Hey Terry, you done fishing yet?
So, if its worth that, you ask $6,900/bo inthe paper. And as terry says, you let someone come to your house with a whip until you agree totake $6,200-6,300 and you throw the title and keys at them in a fit of desparation.

To answer your question, it's AWD, gold, loaded.
Let me guess, it's a LS .. right?
Ok, door # 2 .. it's a base ..?
All right -- I give up. What's the options, what's the color, hows the tires ?
Ever see the show "who's the weakest link" ..? We need a little help here ....!
Terry.

Terry.
So what's the good news ..? It's worth more than $15, but not much more than $17 ... and that's if it is "jam up" and looks like it has 35k ...
I hope this helps ...
Terry.
If I remember correctly, paint work doesn't help ..and if I remember correctly, handshakers get less jingle .... l..o..l.....
Sooooo, sounds like $17,5/$18 .. maybe.
Terry.

You haven't left much info on this Van .. is this a base, LE, Grand, Grand ES ...?
See my Crystal Ball is in the shop again .. so cough up some info..!
Terry.
This would be worth your while to take it to a "dent Wizard" and have those removed for a $100 bucks or so ..
If you say it's -beautiful- it better be jam-up. Knee deep in rubber, interior looks like it could stand in the showroom with the dings removed.
IF so.. this will probably do somewhere around $12,5/$13 in the trade zone.
Terry.

What do you all think the following would fetch in the Chicagoland area?
2000 Ford Windstar base, silver, 32,000 miles, auto, air, cruise, tilt, pw, pl, pm, cassette. xtra clean as no kids have ever been in it.
I figure that no extra door on the driver side will hurt, though.
thanks for your time!

$5 dollars ..? $1,500 ..? $4,500 ...?
Come on ...! work with us ....!
No ticky -- No washy ...!
Terry.
The 99 Toyota LE's with, let's say 50/60k on em, are doing around the $12/$13's.
And on the GM side, 99 Venture LS's are doing around the $9's..
So, pick your poison ... l.o.l..
Terry.
Thanks in Advance

$3200-3300 or so, real money. $4,700 is about closer to retail. Hand crank windows..etc.. they hurt it.

Bill
Good ole CarMax "Low No Haggle Pricing" that's the usual $1,000-1,500 too high.
Bill
At a new store 70Kish is about the limit, but we just took in a 1998 528i with 65K on the clock. Its on its way somewhere else.
Meanwhile, a SUPER nice 1995 M3 stick in silver with 78K came in. 1 owner, all books, etc. Also a 1990 325icA, similar deal. 110K.
We'll retail those.
Bill
You read the crash test ratings on the GM Minivans?
I believe, and my experience proves, that the sludge issue is a bunch of BS.
Get the Sienna
Bill
I thought that seemed a little high, but I wasn't sure how much too high.
Thanks again....
Thanks again
You did quite well on the Accord! $12,800 is all the money plus 2 or 3 bags of chips
Bill
Thanks you very much!
