Thanks for your advice! Much appreciated.

    Bill &/or Terry,

I'm the guy who traded in his '98 RR for a 2000 528iT a few months ago--with your advice--thanks! (Miss the Rover occasionally but the E39 is great!)

Anyway, wanted your thoughts on my '88 M6, black/tan, mileage low 60's, pretty much mint except suspension needs some ($$$$$) work, probably new shocks, SLS work or replacement, etc. I know there there are a lot of these for sale now, but most with more miles--what do you think I could get for it?

However my real question is more, besides the $ value, what would you do, sell it or keep it? It's got that Bee-U-Ti-Ful Body, a true classic, but let's face it, not really up to current performance standards. And the heavy clutch, old TRX's, etc. etc. And I can really have only 2 cars at a time, so keeping the Sixer means forgoing all those other possibilities........(I had thought of a used XK-8, but then I'm back into the Brit car depreciation/ reliability issues, right?)

Thanks once again for any info/advice!

    Woody

It's "Dummkopf", and that's a very good word to know, so file it away carefully. Nicht "Dumpkoff", even though I admit I likeit. Has a certain je-ne-sais-quoi...
and that would be "kein" help here, not "nein" help.

A good one for all you finance managers out there would be what my 3-year-old says when she tries to do something and can't: "Geht ja nicht..."

    Mit freundlichem Gruss,

I have a 2002 Nissan Sentra GXE basically loaded, that just got smacked on the drivers side (well maybe a litter worse than that) Anyway I'm thinking of trading it in for a new car.

The Sentra has 15,000 miles most of which are highway. What kind of trade-in value can I expect?

    Thanks,

The truck is owned by a friend of mine. Driving a truck all the time would be too much for a car guy. ;) Thanks for your help.

A friend of mine is looking to trade up, so of course I thought of you guys. This is all private sale (from a relative).

She has (and will need to sell) a:

1996 Maxima GXE, black/tan cloth, very clean (never hit)
    PW/PL/CD (usual stuff)
    automatic
    87,000 miles (warranty til 91K)
at least shin deep, the FF invasion was stopped at the beach.

    She wants to buy a:

    2000 Pontiac Gran Prix GT
    black/gray cloth
    PW/PL/ABS (again, usual stuff)
    no body work, very clean
    27,000 miles
    Automatic.

Whats a fair price for her to pay on the GT (her cousin inherited another car), and what should she be able to get for the Max, private sale.

Both cars are in southern NJ BTW.

Thanks to everyone for their inputs. This stuff really helps to put things into a reasonable perspective. Traded the van for a 2000 cherokee sport. On paper I got $3200 for the van, and paid $15300 for the cherokee. With all the factors taken into consideration for the cherokee, I paid the edmunds private party price. Edmunds dealer price is $17000.

My mother has a 1990 Honda Accord EX 2 door coupe. It has been excellently maintained at 140,000 miles. It is automatic with a moonroof and spoiler and racing type paint (not sure of color). She lives in Tampa, Fl and is getting ready to buy a new car. I'll be moving to the East Coast and she wants to sell me the car as a second car for the family. We are trying to come up with a fair price. My idea was to find out what the dealer would give her on a trade in and pay her that amount. Can you give me a range of what she'd expect to get from a dealer. She says that people are always telling her at the dealership how great her car is. She doesn't want to try and sell on the market because of the hassle.

    Thanks

Can you tell me what is a reasonable trade-in value for a Mercury Sable GS 4 door sedan, black, power driver seat, 125,000 miles, average condition.

    Thank you for your help.
  • ghuletghulet Member Posts: 2,564
I know I'm not authorized to send anyone to their room, but Stauai, the MODEL YEAR of your car is a significant detail you have failed to include. Thus, 'average' condition doesn't mean much. An average '88 is going to look a lot different than an average '99.

Stickguy, does the Max have a sunroof?

Sparty4, you don't mention condition of the car itself or the interior (and what does 'racing paint' mean? Is it all stickered up, three-tone, slammed, etc.)? Color could be important, too (if it has pink racing paint, the value will be a bit different than silver).

Sorry, Bill and Terry, I could_not_resist.

I have a 2000 Toyota Sienna XLE with auto sliding door, sunroof, premium sound, cloth seats, center console, gold badging, cargo net, cd cassette. The van is tan with 32,000 miles on it. It is in good condition and clean. Can I expect 20,000 with either trtade-in or private sale? You can email me privately if you wish richellel@alltel.net

....... .. The color is good, the miles are just Ok. Sound's like you have all the options .... Good condition ..?

Does that mean, new tires, interior missed all the Mcdonalds fights, and you can still see the carpets ..and the exterior doesn't look like it was parked at the "Animal house" -- l.o.l...

You should see somewhere in and around .. $19ish, I think you will miss the $20ish mark with the miles.

    I hope this helps ....

....... This style is kinda "timeless" ... it was a "super sharp" then, and is still a very cool lookin' vehicle now.

Me ..? I would just keep it (but I also have a 6 car garage) .. the value won't be much different in 04.

If you sell it, you will probably see $7/$8 ..if it's a beauty. If you need the cash and don't want to spend a Visa card full -- say bye bye to it... I doubt, you will have any problem selling it.

Hey, I am looking at the 2001 Nissan Altima, asked about it in an earlier post and didn't get a reply. The car has about 20K miles on it and is in good shape but it is a rental. What do you think I could get it for? $12.5 to $13.0?? Thoughts, in Milwaukee.

I go to the auctions... I get all backed up!

    Woody...

$7-8K? Terry.. a Mint M6 with 60K? tsk tsk tsk.

Run that sucker Juuust north of York, PA or Juust off the FL Turnpike at the 408 tollway... It'll do $10-12K. I just got $20K for an M6, but it had 30K miles on it. Retail. QUICKLY.

$8K? i think that car, if its NICE NICE NICE is worth at LEAST $12-13K retail. I could see it do more than that. I am thinking, that if it was advertised and prepped right, to the right Buyer, its a $15K+ car.

...... Oooh, Did someone have a little too much Molsens ..?

If the vehicle is puuuuurfect, not needing $2,500 of suspension work .. and a little this and a little that. On these 6's, always run $100 just to get a look at .. so there goes another easy Nick .. the figures are based on on the potential work.

Jam up and puuurffect .. needing nothing .. I mean -0- .. You could ask $12/$13, what you ask, and what you get, is two different figures, the extra low miles do make a huge difference. The vehicle could pull all the money on Retail Rd.

Sorry for a little more detail, its a 2001 Nissan Altima GXE in Silver (rental special) with about 20K miles on it. As I said it was a rental so its an automatic with just base, no abs or any add ons. Tan interior, cd player (std) etc. It was a rental car nice and clean (for a rental, fwiw), and I followed brentwood (bill's) guide to checking for painting and touch ups and didn't find any. It and has been sitting on the lot for about 3-4 weeks with about 5-6 other 2001 Nissan Altimas and about 10 altimas in total.
Additionally, the dealer company has two more 2001 Altimas on a toyota lot about 2 miles away. I checked carfax and everyone one of them was a rental in either florida or ny/nj.

What do you think is a good offer for the car? I see that you're not a fan of the altimas. Why? Should I look at something else? BTW, have any other ideas for a good used car that will transport me, carry all my crap, ski's, bikes, etc that is around $10-$13K? I use it mostly for short hauling to parks, work etc. Not much long haul driving as I can fly whenever i want as I work for an airline. What would you suggest for me if I am looking for a car like that. Yeah, I know about the Chevy (toyota) thing but have driven my friends Corrolla and I just didn't like it.

I really like the 2002 Altimas but I think its a little too big for me and expensive.

Where would you guys peg (retail) a '91 Volvo 240? Auto, leather, 130k, red. Just about perfect in every way...but it's been a "lot queen" at this one place here in town. I looked at it over two months ago and it's still there. I'm trying to convince a friend/co-worker she needs to replace her '87 K-Car...she's on a wicked tight budget, though.

I've been super busy and didn't notice your post from another thread to contact you. But I thought this one might be of interest to the peanut gallery so I'll post it here:

    *1997 BMW 528i
    *5 speed
    *Silver on black leather
    *55K
*Luxury package (roof, memory seat, dual zone climate ctrl)
    *8K on Michelin XGTH4's
*Current on all service and just had a major going-thru incl new water pump, thermostat & housing (I guess these are weak areas on the 2.8L)
*New brakes with Brembo rotors and Pagid pads
    *All fluids flushed and refilled
*Small scuff/scratch on lower side of rear bumper
*Car is beyond immaculate. Owner is a pro detailer and uses his car to test products. Not a hint of a swirl mark and wheelwells clean enough to eat off of.
    *Car is in N. Arkansas

He is asking $24.5 for it. He needs to sell it outright as he has a VW 337 GTI on order (a ltd edition GTI) from an out-of-state dealer so a trade is too much of a hassle.

Wholesale and Retail on this baby, please? I can provide pics if you want them.

Hello. I have a 1988 Mercedes 300E four door I'm trading in this weekend. The odometer broke last year at 217,410 miles and the a/c is not working. Everything else seems to be working fine. No rust and the few scratches you would expect given its age.
One dealer told me $500. Does that sound about right. I'm in central Ohio if that makes a difference.

    Thanks
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
........ Stick, Babe I still luv Ya .. You must have been in Itsy Bitsy print that day ... couldn't see Ya.

Yeah, that's it .. Itsy Bitsy print..!

If I read this right .. you have a family member trading with another right ..?

Sooooo, we have a black Max GXE with some tan gut's .. in NJ. With some Itsy Bitsy miles that add up to 87 klicks ..

If, it's nice all the way around, and it looks like it has 37k then the vehicle is worth maybe around $4,0 .. and on the retail end $5/$5,5 if needs -0-.

Now, buyer # 2. His vehicle is doing around the low $12's at the Tower. The miles are low for the year and it's the right color for NJ. (cloth right ..?) .. ---

So what's a fair deal ...? The Prix for $13,5.

    Did I answer this right ...? l.o.l....

    Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
...... Yeah, thats fair -- if your Amish .. l.o.l...

Now, I'm not standing in front of it .. and I understand not all is working 100%. But, I have a feeling, if it still looks good, no rust and the interior is presentable. Even at TMU, that little MB will get detailed.. make it look sharp and do $2,000+ at the Columbus Auction...

$500 ...? not unless it's getting pulled by a black buggy.

    Terry :-)
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
    ........ What's this worth ..?

99 SL500 Benz, 19,217 miles, platinum and silver, 12 pack, Pan top, sport pack -- A "baby doll" (glows in the dark) from front to back.

1 flaw, a paint chip on the clear, left side pass hood area, about the size of half of an eraser top...

    What do Ya think ...?

    Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
....... Altima's are super nice little vehicles, you have never heard me say a negative.

The GXE is the base vehicle, CD, power windows, locks, cruise, tilt, mirrors.. usually just the Hcaps.

Miles are a little stiff for the year .. but these Altima's don't really get started til 100k++ .. $12,5 or so should put it in your driveway.

    Terry.

    Terry,

Since you 'swear by' Volvos on the other board (I forget which), I'm going to check this one out tonight for the wife:

'98 S70 T5 (yes, she needs the HPT, she just doesn't realizes it yet ;-) )
    Black on black leather
    cd changer
    cold weather pkg
    70kmi
    asking $14.5k

Is there something about these turbos that I need to be concerned about?

    thanks.

"Is there something about these turbos that I need to be concerned about?"

    Just torque steer. :-)
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
...... That's a good topic .. I was at an auction today where there had to be over 80 that ran.

So, it's a T5 .. (got some scoot power) .. and it has 71 King Kong Klicks .. hmmm, well that's really nothin' for that type of vehicle.

Your a left coaster .. so the color is fine for your area and the cold pack, will keep you toasty on those nice fall drives through Monterrey.

As long as all the service has been done .. and your deep in rubber on all four legs, you should do fine.

The price seems pretty good. He probably has like, 12/$12,5 in it with the service and some this and some that.

Fire him up at $13, get a reaction
(I'm sure you will) .. l.o.l.. I feel, he will cut it from the herd at $13,5ish.

    Hey, let us know ....

    Terry.

PS. On those Turbo's ... there is something to be concerned about. At 180 mph, they start to whine :-)

Now we are on a Yota ... make up your mind...!

These 4 runners are stronger than a night in a Tijuana jail right now ..

This 97 has like - no miles. Slider, 4x4 V6 .. all the good stuff to have.

$15 ..? Man that's cheap -- if it's nice and only needs a little this and that. I have a partner, that just bought a black one with 50k at the FL auction last week .. and paid $16 for it -- you need to check that puppy out ..!

    So, now what ..?

Well anyway, it's the right color inside and out .. actually, this sounds like a pretty nice rig, slider, 4x4, and tunes to go with.

On the trade side .. $11, ... going down Retail rd. should start you up at $13,9 -- and some cute cowgirl should give up $12,5/$12,9/$13,2 ...

Hello -- what can I realistically look at in L.A. for a Red '97 Honda Civic DX Hatchback, grey interior, currently with 60,055 miles on it (but will likely be selling in 3-6 months,so add about 4,000 miles), news tires, A/C, Sony AM/FM/Cassette, [non-permissible content removed] n' span inside -- (I often travel with my dog, but she rides in a crate *and* she's clean, so very little hair and *no* smell!) some dings on the passenger side that I plan to have tapped out and otherwise no accidents, great shape, all the regular maintenance? I'm hoping to sell privately, but if its feasible for a trade will consider that too (trading UP to a VW Passat, and can't wait!). Many thanks.

    ..... 130k ..? Considering the year .. that's almost new. l.o.l...

But if it's nice like you say it is ... you know the deal, all serviced up, deep in rubber, nice history, etc., they could have paid $3,0++. Is this a Volvo dealer or an "off street" dealer..?

This one, I will have to guess a little on. Let's say he bought it "as a package" and a few other vehicles from a Import dealer, so .. I might think, he paid a large $3+ for it .. had some service done to it, and is asking $5,900.

Now you have my interest .. so let me know.

Jeez, you still there? For Chrissake, sell the Benz yourself. $500? How many Mercedes have you seen in your local paper for $500? Right. I realize your car is oldish and has a broken odo. My mom also has an '88 300E with over 320k miles on the original engine and transmission. These cars are sturdy, there are buyers out there if it's in decent shape. Don't trade it.

If it's in goodt shape other than the broken odo, sell it. What color is it? Interior, leather or tex? Did you replace the crummy Becker tape stereo with a Sony? Does the sunroof work OK?

I say, put it in the paper for $5k, take $4k or even $3500 and walk away a lot richer. Terry, shame on you for not telling Mistral to throw this one in da paper (-:
