I would like to trade my 96 Taurus SHO for a 97 Prizm.
The Taurus has 51,000 miles, black exterior, moon roof, JBL sound with CD changer, cloth seats and
    knee deep in rubber.
Prizm has 70,000 miles green exterior, auto, air
    am/fm no CD, needs rubber.

I've been looking at getting a used Volvo C70 coupe to hold me over for a while and then trade-in/sell once all of the 2003's are out. I've been really surprised, however, to see what the used C70 private and dealer prices have been. It's like a 45k car new, but I've seen *asking* prices for 1-2 year old ones around 30-35K, and 3-4 year old ones for 15-21K! IOW, *asking* prices which show like 25-40% depreciation in 1-2 years, and sometimes over 50% after 3-4 years. And these are even for automatics, and sometimes even cars that are Volvo certified/warranteed until 100K miles.

I've looked, but haven't found any specific mention about anything being wrong with the C70. I've seen some general talk about problems with 1998 production, labor disputes at the C70 factory, but nothing concrete which would make the car seem like poison to the buying public.

Is there something actually wrong with the C70? Frequent repairs? Super expensive to maintain? Etc.? Or is the C70 just a marketing failure -- can't compete with the BMW 3/Mercedes CLK? People aren't ready to buy a sporty Volvo? Coupe market wants at least a V6, RWD, and light/tight handling? Manual transmission on a luxury coupe has no buyers (outside BMW)? Etc.?

If I could be happy with the car as engineered, would it be a dependable, and practical (in terms of expense) car? Or would I be swallowing a dose of someone else's poison that I wouldn't be able to trade-in/sell in the future?

    Thanks for any advice.

I have a 93 BMW 325is, manual, black on black. It has 97700 highway miles. All season tires have about 40% trend left. It has radio/cass and an after market cd changer, leather seats, PW/PL, power slide/tilt sunroof, heated seat, heated outside mirrors. Interior is in good shape; no tears or marks. I do have several small chips/scratches on the outside but no dent; never in an accident. It does need a new clutch, otherwise in good mechanical shape.

I would appreciate if anyone can advice me what its trade in value is. What about a private sell?

    Thanks, Ray.

PS. I live in the Chicago area.

I think your second assessment is more accurate. Its just that when most people think of a luxo-sporty-coupe, Volvo never even enters their minds. I heard they are discontinuing the C due to its poor sales numbers. Its a real shame.

Maybe it would have helped to actually spend some bucks on advertising. I haven't seen a strong ad campaign from volvo since back in the early 80s (i think that's when it was - maybe earlier). maybe somebody can help me out with this one ... wasn't there one with them setting a truck on TOP of the volvo??

    '11 GMC Sierra 1500; '98 Alfa 156 2.0TS; '08 Maser QP; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '11 Mini Cooper S

    ....... Don't start flippin' out on us ... l..o..l....

It's just not Volvo, it's BMW, Acura, Benz, Honda etc, etc.

Personally, I like em' .. and much sharper than the Acura -- But, that's just happens to be my own stupid personal taste.

Coupe's aren't doing well right now .. and really haven't been for a while. Wagons are back in Vogue and kicking the market. Also, the sport sedans are hot, and makes everyone in the family happy .... Then of course, there is the SUV's crawling out of the woodwork.

And now, the new rave seems to be these 5 door hatchbacks like the Mazda, Honda and Pontiac .....

Sooo, it's nothing personal ... I like the Benz CLK's and drive a lot of em', but even though they come from the "father land" .. their not burning any bridges down....

It get's back to what I always say -- "Buy and drive what YOU like ..!"

I am trading my 1998 C230 for 2002 BMW 525. Dealer is offering 16,500 for my car. It has 44,000 miles, leather, heated pwer seats, moonroor, traction control. Edmunds and NADA has average trade in at 19,000. ANy opinions on Actual Cash Value, is the dealer low balling because he does not sell MBs
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
.... These are nice little vehicles .. this one is low in miles, plus it has everything on it.

If it is as clean as you say it is and deep in rubber .. then it should do close to $7 on a trade. (depending on were you live)

Or, if you pick door #2 .. and enter the "dark side" and go retail, then get it cleaned up, make it look 00 .. and drop it in the paper for $9,950 and let some nice Home Depot employee buy it for $8,9/$9,500 ...

I hope this helps .. and let us know.

.... It sounds like the dealer is -- dead on the money.

Not too hurt anyones feelings here .. but the "Baby Benz's" .. are kinda like starter kit's. They are inexpensive new .. and they are the same way used, and on trade.

Yours is low in miles for the year and if it's nice, clean and needs -0- that would be the right figure -- in and around... I buy a lot Benz's, it seems the dealer is working hard for your business, it would be a hard push at the block.

I understand the "books" -- I guess on this one, they are on the wrong page. It would be hard to hit those figures on the Retail side.

Sorry, I always like to give people good news.

    Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
..... You my friend are right on the money ... both ways.

It "might" do $11, the miles are low for the year -- it's that friggin' handshaker that's killing it .. l..o..l... but you knew that.

It's a base, base SE, kinda rare. But you know the gig, make it look bullet proof .. and $13,950 is a great starting figure -- and you will see $12,5/$13,500.

Hey, let us know what happens ...

I love mine, but I just found out we're going to have twins next fall. We just bought two cars last fall,a 2001 sage Catera with the convience package, and a 2001 VW Passat,anthracite,1.8T 5spd. with no extras at all.
I've been idly wondering of selling one and getting the dreaded minivan!
    I've heard the Catera is poison right now,but a local Saturn dealer is sellind a 2000,14,000 miles,with everything(roof,chrome,Bose)for $23,000.
What could I expect if I sell either of my cars? The Catera has 7000 miles;the Vdub,9000.

I have a 2001 Lexus GS 430 with 16,000 miles. It has premium pkg, spoiler & wood steering wheel. Looking at Edmunds TMV it is showing a trade in of around 41K. I am thinking of trading it in for a Porsche Boxster. Any idea of what the actual trade in might be? I'm located in Houston, TX.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
.... Virginia Beach .. huh..? We were just there for a golf outing .. had some fun!

$23 for a 00 ..??? Hmmmm, sounds like somebody has been doing some of that Bolivian marching dust. He couldn't have much than $17/$18 in it, unless his bookie is lookin' for him. l.o.l..

Sage .. eh', not a big seller .. but, you have all the toys .. slider, heated seats, Bose and chromes .. right? And of course .. no miles.

In the paper for $24,900 and you should see $23/$24,500.

The Passat is a big seller .. what will hold you back is, the handshaker .. the miles are a big help here. I'm thinkin' $19,900 in the paper .. $18,500+ and cut her from the herd.

    I hope this helps ...

.... These are nice vehicles .. actually I like the GS more than the LS, but that's a personal preference.

Miles are a tinge on the long side and depending on the color .. Pearl, silver, etc. But, if it's puuurffect, you should be in and around that $39 figure .. that's a loooong push to $41, might see $40 based on barometric pressure and potential sunspot's ...

I have a 2000 Isuzu Roseo S, V6, 5-spd., 40K mi. A/C, AM/FM/CD, Roof rack, aftermarket tinted glass. I have some hail dents on the right side. Two questions:

    1) The dealer is offering me 6K on trade. Am I correct in assuming this is low?

    2) Am I better off trading as is, or fixing the damage first?

    Thanks.

Terry, here's one in the NE - 98 eclipse GSX, black, gray leather, moonroof - basically the way they come. Here's the kicker - 136000 miles! It needs tires, struts, brake work and the body is chipped and dinged from 136000 miles of driving. It seems to drive ok. Original owner said it's the original clutch! He must have babied this car!

    What's she worth? Thanks

    Mike
  • scoutmscoutm Member Posts: 4
Thanks for your insight. Actually my GS is black with tan interior. Will that hurt much?

I drove a Porsche Boxster this past weekend and fell in love with it.
  • merckxmerckx Member Posts: 565
but my 2001 sage Catera only has the convience package-it has none of those items you mentioned(but the white one at my local Saturn dealer did have roof, chrome,Bose). My only extras are memory seats, power passenger,home-link,and alarm system-list exactly $33,000.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
....... Aaaaaaah Houston, we have a problem.

Well, uum .. how do I put this ..? Black in Houston is not a big seller. IF -- I was going to trade, I would be hard at it ... another month and it might get ugly -- try $38.

But let us know .. this saga has my interest.

..... Gheeeeez, what is this ...?

Bad news day ..? Where's Bill when I need him, with his bad news bag .. l..o..l....

Let's just say, this doesn't help your case much ... No slider, no chromes, no Bose, no heated bun warmers, no fun. But, we have loooow miles.

So, we might have to kick it back a few notches ... well, this is certainly not helping things any -- but, I gotta think turn it down by $1,5/$2,000 and see what happens.

I've got a 2000 ranger 4x4 single cab, short wheelbase.. ac, cd, just past 15k miles..

any idea what i'd get in a trade in?

Just trying to prevent you from being sent to your room. You need to add more info to your post.

They need transmission type, trim (XL, XLT, Edge?), engine (V6 or 4?), color, any accidents or damage, regional location, any other options (power pack?)

More info is better than less. Help them help you.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
..... It sounds nice, except for the miles .. and actually, the miles are not that bad for the year.

If you are deep in rubber .. and it will show 00, then you should be in and around $7 for a trade.

    Hey, good luck.

    Terry.

    ..... Wow, that's quite a change .. a SHO for a Prizm.

Hmmmm, well Ya gotta do ..what Ya gotta do.

The miles are low .. the color is great for a MI person, and it has all the stuff. This is the best time of the year if you are trading it ..

SHO's are funny critters .. it better look "Jam-up" .. inside and out. So, around $6 for that money maker. And without a complete description on the Prizm, I gotta think $3,5 to $4,0 with the miles and no LSI.

So, if this is a trade at a dealer .. they gotta make a few bucks --- Your vehicle and $1,5/$2,0 back in the "Hip National Bank" ...

This is another interesting one .. so let us know .....

    Terry.
  • inneedofhelpinneedofhelp Member Posts: 29
Terry you hit the nail on the head. The dealer offer $6000.00 for my SHO and the Prizm is $4500
I would prefer to keep the SHO but since last May
of 2001 the repairs for the SHO is:
    $2400 new transmission
$350 leak in Air conditioning system
$450 for new plugs and Slave Cams repair
    $400 bad air bag sensor
    $460 New Alternator and battery
$500 Brake rotors and pads front and rear and new
    passenger side front caliber(third one)
    $500 New Rubber
And now the ABS light is on, It's a hell of alot more car than the Prizm but the upkeep is killing me :)

There was body damage requiring a repaint of the front end and hood, and there's some current minor body damage on the order of what one would expect living in L.A. and parking on the streets and in parking lots.

Only 18,000 miles in over 24 months, though, and it has alloy wheels, power everything (incl. sunroof), six-disc CD changer with Monsoon system, AC and all that jazz. It's dark green. Hopefully I covered the basics. I'm considering trading this in soon, and the numbers I'm hearing have been discouraging, so I'd like to hear at least one more opinion. Thank you.

Its a blue 5spd with 30k and standard equipment only. Is the market weak for these cars? Ive had it in the paper for 3 days at 14,900 (dallas market) and have yet to get a call. Based on other ads ive seen, i dont think my price is out of the park. What would be the trade in figure? This board is great, lots of good info. Thanks in advance.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
...... Nope, the market is strong on all these types right now .. GT's, Cobra's especially, and of course the Formula's and the SS's ...

Could it be your Ad ..? Because your price is fine (it's a coupe .. right?) ...

    1999 Ford Mustang GT
    only 30k pampered miles
    All Service done, Adult driven
    Must see/must sell - $14,900
    214 xxx xxxx

Just don't write stuff that's not true .. nothing PO's a buyer more, then driving 10/20 miles, looking at the Ad, then looking at the vehicle --- and there is no similarity's ... l.o.l...

Also keep in mind, it's only been in the paper for 3 days. You should always take an Ad out for 14 days.. at least.

    Hey, good luck ....!

.... Sorry, did I miss you ...? Is this a GSX Turbo ..?

Man, we got some miles going on here ...!

I know, I know .. they just drove back and forth to Church on Sundays, that's why that's the original clutch --- And the Pope is coming over to my house for dinner later ..

Anyway .... it needs lotsa stuff .. l.o.l..

I gotta think, you got $200+ in rubber .. another $200+ in just fix me up's .. another $100+ in just stuff that you might miss.

Uuum, I'm a player at $3,0/$3,5 .. I fix it up, drop $5/$600 into it, and put some eyes on it.. and I have it on the pavement for let's say, $4,100 and on the lot for $5995 and hope the Turbo doesn't stop breathing ... l..o..l..

..... You said you have some dings and dent's .. Does it look like a practice range for terrorists ..?

    This is a 2WD .. right ..?

It's a handshaker, and the miles are stiff -- that we all know.

Aaah, $6,000 ..? Is that American money ..?

If someone beat it Silly .. it's still gotta be worth at LEAST $7,5/$8 .. I must be missing something here.

I must have read this all wrong or my stomach is growling or something ...

You need to re-post ... I must be having a flashback or something. $6 ....?

Thanks Terry. No, that's not my ad. I kept mine simple. I would never put words like pampered in my ad. Pampered is one of those words that only the owner would know what it means. If the car was truly pampered, the owner wouldnt be wanting to sell it anyway. Would you know what the approximate trade in would be? I'm still going to try to sell it myself, i'd just like to know just how much my patience will pay off.

    Hey Thanks!!

We did just what you told us. We cleaned up the LSC, it looked new, had all the service papers ready and put in one of those big liners in the paper for $17,900.

We had a bunch of calls and sold it in 3 days for $17,500. Even though it wasn't our car, it still was exciting.

    As always, Thank You!

Looking at a 2002 Toyota Tacoma 2dr Xtracab V6 4WD SB (3.4L 6 cyl 4A) Any thoughts about that vehicle?

    Hi,

What Terry is trying to say is the problem is your ad and not the car or price. Rewrite it with a couple good adjectives and you should have a better response. You have to make your car stand out head and shoulders above the others in the paper.

base model, 5 speed, 31000 miles, silver, in perfect condition. I'll probably sell it myself, but I'm trying to figure out what I should take if the dealer wants to make me an offer when I buy a new one.

    Hmmm..

If this truck is REALLY Nice, and Just "GOt Jam spread All Over the Seats" or whatever term it is that Terry uses.. (is it "Jam-Up"?) then I think it is worth $10,500 in the Mile High City.

Now, OTOH, Shop it.. you may find a nutter to get into the 11s.. But I thinkum that real Dollahs be in the $mid-10Ks.

Tacoma? Nice. Toyota 4WDs have resale value like $100 bills.. But I like that Tundra and there's slush fund $$ on em now.

Good thing ya had that as your User ID or I was gonna give ya a Florida ## for a Subaru.. and you woulda not liked it.

I assume it is a bit more Basic.. and it is a Handshaker.

It is worth, I feel, $13K to MAYBE MAYBE a couple hundred more as a trade.

    Sell it yeself?

$15,900 in the paper and grab low $15Ks.
