The GS400 is at a Nissan dealership, and they have it "marked" at $27,490. Was thinking about trading a 4x4 Pathfinder for it, may be better off waiting till the fall.

How much does the mileage change the value of one of these? Lets say compare one with 35k miles and this one with 60k+, both clean, no body work, similar options. What is the difference, trade-in and retail? I have seen a few at our local Lexus dealership in the past month, prices in the low-to-mid 30's, same setup as the one at Nissan.

    thanks again,

I'm trying to find out the true wholesale (trade-in) value for my car. According to Kelley Blue Book and Edmunds, it should be around $1,500. However the first dealer I went to claims its value is actually less than zero (he said he could give me few hundred dollars) due to the excessive mileage. He used Galves price guide.

Here's the details for the car:

    GS Model, 4 cyl. Auto, A/C, P/W, P/L, Radio w/ Cass., P/Ant, cruise, rear defrost., 139,000 miles.

The interior is in very good condition (some stains, but no tears or excessive wear). The exterior has the typical few dings (no dents, no rust), but the paint is still very glossy. Overall the car still looks really good.

    Thanks!

    Hi Bill and Terry:

96 Acura Integra 4 door LS sedan, dark green in North Carolina, manual transmission, sunroof, alpine 6 cd trunk changer, cloth seats. Low miles (57K), one owner (me) never had a problem, all maintenance up to date. Was in a left front fender-bender requiring replacement of panel and left front tire but no body work.

Looking to trade in for volvo s60 or acura 3.2 TL.

What price do you thinkg and would I be likely to get a better deal at the Acura dealership bc its the same make?

    Thanks and best regards

While surfing in www.autotrader.com, I stumbled across a 99 Acura RL for $21,000. It is water damaged, 26,000 miles, and has a salvage title. Car has supposedly been professionally steam cleaned, and detailed. All fluids have supposedly been changed. I assume the resale value of this car will be zero in five years. Could it even be insured?
  • jeepster4jeepster4 Member Posts: 53
This salvage titled car doesn't need to wait 5 years to have zero trade value. Few, if any dealers, would touch it now. The only insurance available would be basic liability.

Hello all! The local dealer has a white base 2001 Miata with the convenience package and the "small" ground effects package. It has been on his lot for months and months. It is not used, it just seems that nobody wants it. What would be a reasonable offer? Is there any special incentives on these (I live in Mid-Missouri). What do dealers typically do with cars like these?

My Accord is an EX, 4 cyl, auto, gold, 4dr with 22,000 miles (I know, high, but I bought it last August), what would be a good estimate of its value?

Thanks for the info on pricing. That is what I am seeing at the local dealers. I found an on-line auto broker in Denver that has located me 2 1999 Outback wagons (lease returns) with 44K miles for $14,600 plus $500 shipping to get one from NJ to CO and a $190 dealer handling fee. Should come to around $15,800 out the door with taxes and everything. Looks like that is a good deal from the info you provided. Thanks, Ken

$15k for a 3-and-a-half year old Outback w/ 44k does not strike me as a good deal.
Bill and Terry will give you accurate information on the used car market, but they can't do your thinking for you... Why not buy the silly thing new for a few hundred $$ over invoice and be done with it? I just helped my neighbors buy an '02 OB Wagon for $22,400 + TTL.

That's $7-8k for the first 44k miles... you know, the trouble-free, everything-under-warranty ones? These puppies have two timing belts and nearly a dozen CV joints... I'd rather be the first owner on anything AWD.

I'm all for buying used cars, but your Subies/Toyotas/Hondas/BMWs are just generally overpriced on the used market.

My 2 cents (and your $20k)...

I'm in the early stages of purchasing a new Lexus 300 AWD and contemplating trading-in our 2001 Volvo V-70 2.4T. It's metallic blue with 18,750 miles. With all the options and based on my estimation of its condition, fair trade-in is being calculated through this site as $25,922. The question: Should I stick to my guns and insist on this price with a Lexus dealership in Memphis (the only one in town), maybe less, maybe more? Haven't opened the subject of trade-in yet with the dealership, but the local Volvo dealership (the only one in town) offered us $25,000 trade-in towards the purchase of a V-70 XC.

These things have bad resale for sure. (I should know, I've own(ed) three Contours myself, all used.)

That combined with the fact the you see all six digits used on the odometer will scare off a dealer.

Not to mention, this spring when I was looking for a 4cyl stick shift Contour, I saw two 95's on dealer lots. Both had been traded in 6 months or more prior.

So they will probably just want to haul your car off.

It's a shame, as they are fun little cars to drive.

If it runs, just put an ad in the paper and sell it. Your new/used car dealer doesn't want it.

    Bill/Terry-

Sorry to repost but Friday is quickly approaching and I need your expert advice! Please help!

I am looking at a 1999 Saab 9-5 se v6 turbo, loaded, auto, 41K miles, silver, black leather, ventilated front seats, heated front and rear seats. I have set up a time to drive it on Friday here in New Orleans. The dealer has it listed for 19,999 and will Saab Certify it for something like $542.50 more. How does this sound? What do you think I should offer?

This would be my first Saab, what about reliability, maintenance costs, etc. Comments welcome from all!

Also, trying to decide to either trade in my Jeep or sell it on my own.
Black/Grey Int. 1991 Jeep Wrangler 4x4 STD 61K miles, orig. owner, orig. alloy wheels (5), tilt steering wheel, 180 HP 4.0 HO 6 cyl., am/fm, recl, front seats, rear seat, 5-sp, no air (it is a REAL jeep), 5 new Goodyear Wrangler GS-A tires (OEM size), new clutch, overall nice shape, runs like a top
I am selling it because I am tired of no a/c and getting my kidneys shaken out on these New Orleans streets...and I am not 20 yrs. old anymore.
What do you think I could get from dealer vs. on my own?
  • cliothemonkeycliothemonkey Member Posts: 1
What do you thinkg an "average" 2000 i-30-t would go for at auction?

How much do you think the lease buyout would be?

What is a fair markup for the infinity dealer?
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
Did we miss ya? My bad!

$17,500 on the SAAB 9-5 to MAYBE $18K is reaonable. The dealer has mid-15s in it I bet.

    $4K on the Jeep...

Thanks for getting back to me but it may be for naught.

I called the salesman to see why he had not faxed over some documents yet (carfax report, certification info, etc) and he said "we" hit a "snag" on the certification.

Salesman- "Everything checked out great on the certification inspection except for the mileage."

Me- "What is wrong with the mileage?"

Sales- "Well, at 61,000 Saab wont certify it, but everything else was great!"

Me- "You told me it had 41K on it"

Sales- "My sheet says 41 but the service guy said it is 61."

He eventually went outside to check for himself and confirmed that it was 61K. He offered to include a 2y/24k Masterguard warranty in the price. "we will eat the $1700 cost due to our mistake" But he did not offer to move on the price (19,999)of the car. I told him I was not NEARLY as interested because of the high miles and the non-Saab warranty. I still may go look at it but only out of curisoity.

I really thought this was going to be my "deal" so needless to say I am feeling very discouraged.

I only want to buy a manf. certified car. With only one dealer of each type (Saab, Volvo, BMW, Lex, Inf) in the city my selection and ability to shop against each other is very limited.

Perhaps I should just keep the jeep, sweat my butt off, and wait a while. I doubt it will depr. much more since I only put 3-4K miles per year on it.

Fall will be here in 3 months!
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    61K Miles?

    $19,995? ROFL!

Yeah... keep shopping. And pass on the "Manufacturer Certified Only" cars think.

I'm sure some independent lot in town has a clean 9-5 for $16,995 or something. Just check the car over carefully..etc.. like anywhere else.

I could and probably will post the events of recent days over on inconsiderate salespeople, or maybe on inconsiderate buyers, considerate salespeople and considerate buyers, or maybe here, I'm not sure it's all soooooooooo confusing, somehow I've have been entangled in a war and cooperation between 3 dealers, 2 of which are owned by same guy and are both Caddy stores, 4 salesman, 2 different Navigators, one from a post a month ago that a deal has resurfaced on, and one from the other day, the funny thing is, the two store shop was trying to screw itself, then one person stepped up to try to save it, then same person also tried to call in the third party dealer who was a LM shop wich caused the resurfacing of the old deal.

It is intersting and I will elaborate somewhere......but in the mean time.....bottom line is, Terry you helped me peg a '00 2WD a while back......see condensed copy:

    Me------------------------
    8008 of 8009 maybe a navigator..... by karz10 Jul 16, 2002 (01:10 am)

    00 Navigator 2WD
Black w/ Gray lthr (my preference by the way)
34k mi (updated now was 33)
    hot and cold seats
    dual air
    alpine w/ 6 disc
    chrome wheels

Inside pretty clean, exterior pretty clean minus a few scratches around a fender well, only about ankle deep in rubber (NO sunroof)

Edmunds shows equipped vehicle in range of...
    2WD- 24,4 / 26,5 / 28,7 (back then)
    ==============================================
    New additional info:
Found out it was a lease vehicle about 45 min away, guy (i looked him up and called him)leased it on 24 mo lease, wife drove it, turned it in back in Feb '02, must have sat on that lot in neighboring city for alomst 4 months, coz it turned up at auction 6/12/02, 6/17 showed up inspected in my city, 6/15 2 days earlier was posted on net by the Dlr who now has it. Car fax is clean, original lessee said nothing really wrong with it...etc.
    ===========================================

Your original condensed response back then:--------------
    8009 of 8009 Karz10 .. by rroyce10 Jul 16, 2002 (05:47 am)
the 00's, ultra nice, ultra clean ones .. 20/25k, chromes, slider, sound, heat, 4X4 and all the stuff are doing around that $27ish figure at the block, the 2WD's are doing around the $24ish figures .. so it sounds like the one with 33k "might" be in your strike zone.
If I had a 00 with 33k and I had to put, let's say $500+ into it to make it puuurffect, the I wouldn't have paid much more than $26 for it, and it would go quickly for $27,5. But, that's me .. l.o.l...
    Hey, good luck ....!
    Terry.
    =================================================

Can you clarify a little, on one hand it seems you said the 2WD's were doing about $24k at the block, (implying to me I should be paying $1k-$2k above this wholesale cost) But then you said you wouldn't have more than $26 in it (wasn't sure if you meant as a consumer or as a dealer) and it would 'go quickly at $27,5' (not sure what this meant, except that if the $26 price was as a dealer, then you would sell it easily for $27.5 would make sense)

I'm sorry if this is a stupid Q, I just want to make sure I'm looking at this right.

As I said, i will explain how this deal resurfaced later, but in the mean time, here is where I am........

Dealer last time asking ridiculous numbers BOTTOM FIRM PRICE was $30,9, I politely said thanks but no thanks

New sales manager numbers....was asked to provide them a yes/no answer price, rep didn't want to get caught in negotiation, referring to above numbers, I wasn't sure where I was at really, so....

I said, well......bottom line, my people are telling me that I shouldn't pay more than $25-$26 for it, so rather than try to negotiate from $25, since you want a yes/no Q posed to SM, let's save ourselves some time and say I'll take it for $26 today

....5 minutes later, Karsten, he just can't do that, he's got $28 in it, he said he's willing to do $27,5......

(me)But I thought you wanted a yes or no deal, when did we start negotiating?????...blah blah blah...

    SR:so you're not moving off $26....

Me:Why Should I, he's lucky to get $23 for it wholesale, the truck hasn't moved in 4 months at other lot, you bought it at auction, so I KNOW you aren't upside down in it (like on a trade or something), if you bought it wholesale, you wouldn't pay too much for it....

SR: What if I could get him to do $27k

Me: What am I saying that you are not hearing? We are too far off here, If I knew we were going to negotiate, I would have started at $25, but I was giving you the benefit of the doubt and said $26k

SR: blah blah blah, it's not me it's them, I just want to get this over with...blah blah blah.....what if I can get him to $26,5 I can't see him going any less than this, I don't even know if he'll do it....blah blah blah..

Me....long pause, I'm thinkin it's only 500 more than my firm price, I don't want to be an [non-permissible content removed], but at the same time, I'm not 100% sure of my numbers, but i'll prob do it anyway, but these guys kinda p--- me off a little, but i prob won't find a much better deal, I like this better than the '99, i would rather have a '00 4x4, but this meets most my needs and is a lot cheaper than i could find 4x4 and it's low mi...all ran through my head in about 45 seconds....I said, okay, let me go think this over OUT LOUD w/ wifey who is still pregant and has little patience for this process and is waiting in the A/C'd I30t reading a book...

We're talking about the deal as a lot has happend in the 45 min I've been there, keep in mind, they called me 2 hrs before closing to come in and try to do a deal, so now it's closing time or past it, and everybody's going home,

salesman comes out and says, hey everybody's leaving, there goes the F&I guy,

me: so they don't want to do the deal? (i'm only asking, I'm not upset or anything)

SR: (normal polite tone) well it's late and everyone needs to leave, so if you can come by in the morning we can finish up and do this deal, get the paperwork done

Me: surprised they would let a deal walk out the door, despite the barely after closing time, thinking maybe they don't want to do it or are trying to figure out another way to jack me...lol, but then i think, well there's not huge profit in this dealor maybe none i'm not sure, so i guess they figure if i want it i'llcome back

so i say, ok, you've got my number if you need it, but i'll call or come by tomorrow

SR: So i will see you tomorrow?

    ME: Yeah
    ----------------------------
Ok, sorry again for the long post, but wanted you to know what happened, given the circumstances, what would be your approach tomorrow, and can you clarify earlier response/update me on my numbers

    THANKS SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am going to sell my '99 EB Explorer. It has 72K miles (I know I know). It is a dark blue (I think its called wedgewood). The car is in good shape. It has a V-6 and is 2WD. What would be a good private party selling price for the car? I'll be selling in the Atlanta area. Thanks.

  • rerenov8rrerenov8r Member Posts: 380
    It's the SLT with 4WD
    Dark green paint, shiny
Black Leather Interior(never smoked in), power seat
73K Miles in Chicago/Michigan where salty bumpy roads are the norm ;)
    Well optioned (for 94)-
cruise, tilt, PW, PL, ABS, Rear wiper, fog lights, cargo shade, swing-out spare, remote door lock fob(s),alarm, auto, 4.3 FI V6, apperance package wheels (smokey gray).

NO SLIDER, nice hard roof with rack, no scratches -- probably never had a thing up top.
    No trailer hitch.

    Rubber is 10months/7K miles old.
    Brakes serviced 2months ago.
    Battery is 2months old.

Body is good, but small amount of blistery rust near rear wheel wells would take alot of effort to totally eliminate, yet is only cosmetic (as opposed to say rust on tailgate or near glass which leads to leaks etc)

Seller is private party with maintence records. They want a newer more modern vehicle(considering Subu Forester).

I'm thinking this could be a driver for me @ $4K, and I doubt any dealer would give 'em more than $3K...

Please still give me the info on that Nav, as I will be looking for one just like it, either in 2x4 or 4x4, thanks.....

I guess the new sales manager is only a more polished version of the same, I went back today and they blew me off. I walk in, SM sitting there near the door, up walks the SR,

SM says nice to meet you blah blah blah...well sir, he says, we'll have to pass on your offer blah blah blah....hmmmmm

I say, well I thought Will wanted me to come back today to wrap this up, what happened

SM, we just can't take that kind of loss on the truck, we will sell it for far more than that

Hmmmmm, well are you aware that I already made an offer on the truck, and YOUR TEAM CALLED ME TO COME BACK to talk and we were within $500 last night and we I was gonna wrap it up today and bring in certified funds etc...

SM: Well, we're here to sell cars and make a profit, they called you back because MOST PEOPLE WOULD BE AGREEABLE TO THE DEAL WE OFFERED YOU (assuming he meant the 27,5 offer) and be willing to come up a little, since you know people in the biz, maybe they can get one of these at auction, or if you want to get your wholesale license blah blah blah,

I don't know what he was talking about towards the end, all I know is that I reiterated the fact that I was not asking to pay wholesale for the vehicle, but based on information from every major car value system, looking at what they are going for at auction etc., I was making a fair offer at anywhere from $1k to $2k over wholesale or what you should have bought it for at auction, SINCE YOU DID BUY IT AT AUCTION

SM: well, if you are looking to pay that price for a '00 we can try to locate one for you, but I don't think you will find one anywhere...

Me: So that's it then? you're not talking to me about this truck anymore?

    SM: No

Me: Well, with all due respect, I was very disappointed w/ my last experience here, and I had hoped that you would change my mind, but apparently that would not be the case, I wish you had not wasted my time, and more importantly discussed deals that you were never willing to make, and then still have me come over here today when you knew we weren't going to get anywhere, why didn't you just decline my "yes or no offer" that you forced me to make in the first place and tell me this was over last night?

    SM: long pause no response

Me: I walked out, Sr follwed me to the parking lot, it's not me it's them blah blah blah (but it was partly him, he was the one w/ the whole yes no offer thing that then tried to flip it back to a negotiation, and then left me hangin all night,

dude was wearing a printed tshirt under his white shirt and tie today, what a joke, I'm glad the deal didn't work out, if that wasn't the only low mi 00 in blk/gry that i had seen recently i wouldn't have gone back there in the first place

it's probably a waste of energy, but i almost fell like writing lincoln and the owner about this experience, i didn't list everything that went down for time sake

I guess it's time for a new vehicle for my sister and hubby and they are thinking about a new Forestor.

The want to trade in their 00 Mercury Sable LS, which is like new. Leather, 24v V6, premium pack, buckets, Mach, chrome wheels, 18k, every option, except a sunroof. Their car has never been smoked in, not 1 scratch, it still looks like a new car, maroon and tan.

What say you? The Dealer started talking around $10,000.

Again, thanks for all the help, your the best.

Hello Gentlemen. I was wondering what you could tell me about the value (private party sale) of a 1992 Honda Prelude Si 4WS. The car is a 5-speed manual, has aftermarket 17" wheels, AC, Sunroof, Dual Air Bags, ABS, Power Windows, Power Door Locks, Red (faded hood, roof, decklid, & mirrors) with a black interior. I think he is still on the original clutch! Oh and before you send me to my room, the guy is in Orange County, NY. How much should this guy ask for it? Thanks in advance.

What, did he drive this thing to the father land like ten times in four years? Ouch. I'm gonna guess on a trade he *might* get $3k, I think even that would be a stretch considering the miles, low level of equipment and blue. Oh yeah, and it's a Breeze. I'd tell him to stick it in the paper for $4500 and see what happens. Experts?

I may buy a Jeep Grand Cherokee tomorrow!!!!

It is a silver JGC Special Edition with leather. No other options other than what comes with the SE package. It is a dealer demo with 4000 miles on it. It is 2wd with the I-6 cyl. engine.

Dealer wants 25,500 the 3,000 Jeep incentive would make it 22,500.

    Is this a good deal?

    Please answer quick!!!!

Well, he is basically giving me 2 grand off of invoice for the 4,500 miles on it. Plus the 3 grand rebate from DC.

DO manufactures give dealers money or incentives on Demos....either to use them or sell them?

Look at it this way. If this was a USED 2002 JGC, silver, leather, 4k miles, I-6, 2wd, 10 CD cahnger, no slider, deep rubber, lookin sharp, what would it bring on retail road?

    .... Good Morning ..!

Ya got no slider it's a 2WD and it's a 6, not much going on here .. -- Used, maybe in and around the mid $18's, could hit $19 cuz of the low miles .. the dealer would be asking around $22ish and would cut it from the herd for around $20ish, if he had too ..

The dealers do get some $$ for the Demo's, this one has been online for the right miles (4,5) .. you should be able to buy the new one for invoice, minus demo allowance $600, minus the $3,000

    Hope this helps ...

..... Good Morning ..! How are you ..?

Do they still make these things .l.o.l..

Ok, let's take a look here .. whooo, lot's of miles going on here .. 4 banger, gheez what can I say, might be worth "around" $1,5/$2,0 on a trade, it would depend on what the "eyes" see.

....... Sounds like a nice one .. miles are fine, cold package, V6 lotsa help there, it's got all the toy's, right color, these are hot little buggers and will sell like "yesterday" in Philly ...

IF it's like New, on a trade probably in and around the mid $15's or so, could see $16 on a push -- Retail Rd .. drop it in the paper for $18,9 and see an easy $18 -- handshaker holds this one back a little, but these sell like popcorn with a V6.

..... The Buicks still sell well, but the miles are no help here, but power seat is the saviour, right color and you have brand new sneakers .. on a trade (if it's jam-up) .. you should be in and around that ultra high $7's.. maybe even $8 if it's a "baby doll", plus it's a Buick dealer you are dealing with.

The Avalon is priced Right .. it's a loaded up XL with leather and the right stuff and low miles .. don't let this one get away, they are few and far between ..

    Good Luck ...

I could only help on the ancient Contour/Mystique. Of course I couldn't provide any numbers, but delivered the general bad news.

So Bill and Terry, what sort of fun were you having on your short vacation from RWTIV?

Don't tell me you guys actually had to work, LOL.

    TB
Who knows you guys probably do work pretty hard to be where you are today.

..... I just got back from the Buick Open last night, I had to watch my boy Tiger hit a few balls, he needed a few tips from me .. (Yeah right. .l.o.l...) .. he's getting pretty good at this. He should turn Pro ... oh Yeah, he is.

    Terry :-))

    ..... Oooooh, ouch .. 220k ..? Wow, sounds like a commercial to me ..l.o.l..

This is kinda a weird one, HUGE miles and the vehicle still looks and runs good, but you have the AWD hanging over your head IF it coughs up, if it does big $$ .. well $2,0 is all the money on the wholesale side, $3,9 on the retail side.

If you ever get junk faxes that won't stop (Like from a highly obnoxious Auction in West Orlando...)

I found a GREAT way of stopping them.

Feed a sheet of paper, 8.5" x 14" halfway Into the fax. Tape another to it as it's fed in halfway...

Continue to feed till the bottomof the first sheet is already fed through. Tape a 3rd piece between the two to create a loop.

Then make sure you have typed in BOLDLettering (30-point works GREAT) on each sheet...

"STOP SENDING ME JUNK FAXES! HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO TELL YOU PEOPLE"

Do it at 6pm on Friday :)

just in case you guys are still out there today, I was still asking Terry about his post or asking for help regarding the Navigator situation..

    karz10 Aug 8, 2002 5:20am hopefully that makes a link to post #8373

trying to clarify the values of 2000 4x4 / 4x2 Navigators

for example..going to look at a 00 blk/tan nav w/ navigation 4x4 20k mi. somebody tellin me not to pay more than $28,8 as I recall Terry said something about them doin 27ish at the block, make any sense? car fax shows clear title, dlr says local trade w/ verifiable service

on the 4x2's i was confused about the 24 block / 26 he would have in it and the 27.5 numbers as i referenced in that post

thanks, sorry if i confused you earlier, or if post was too long

Could you provide estimated trade in and private party values for:

    1992 Acura Integra GS-R (2 Door HB)

    Engine: 4-Cyl. 1.7 Liter, 160 hp VTEC
    Trans: 5-speed manual
    Mileage: 107,000
    Color: white
Location: 90mi N of New York City

    Optional Equipment:
    In dash CD player
    Clifford Alarm
    DC Sports Stainless Exhaust

    Standard Equipment:
    AC (Still blows cold)
    PS, PW, PL, PM
    Tilt Wheel
    Cruise Control
    AM/FM Stereo Cassette
    Moonroof

High Mileage snow tires are mounted, but they still have a good amount of tread left.

Paint and interior are clean, non-smoker.
There is a small (3x5") dent in the plastic of the bottom right corner of rear bumper (below the 'main line' of bumper).

Major services done by dealer, oil changes in between done myself (on 7,000 mile intervals).

The timing belt (due at 90K) has not been replaced, as I have been shopping for a replacement vehicle for a while now, and decided to postpone that expense.

    Thanks for sharing your expertise.

    Dave
