    Yep, that's Very, very fair ... IF, you are livin' in Somalia and you have 20 or 30 AK47's to trade for it.

    The miles are nice and low, big help. It's a good color, more help, it has a slider and the chromes, more help, I guess all the "right stuff".

    But, $23,9 -- I don't think so.

    Let's say it's puuuurrrfect, not a scratch, the interior has been "hovered" over, it has 212 coats of wax and it has never seen rain .. and only driven' to the Sunday go to meetin's.

    They can't have a dime over $18 in it, lets say, it's the owners, Mothers vehicle .. and he had to put $19 in it, just so he wasn't taken out of her Will. $20,0 on the table and $21 takes it home.

    Or, the reality of it .. I'm thinkin' $19/$20,0 is more like it.

    $23,9 ...? This must be from the same dealer with the $28,0 Bimmer wagon .l.o.l.

    This one isn't certified but has their "150 point checklist". CPO units are running in the $28 range at BMW dealers.

    BTW, I asked you a few months ago on my parents' 99 Accord LX - I told you they hovered over the interior. You said in the low 12's. They got high 11's on a trade for a new CRV - acceptable to them as he gave them $2k for a 92 Caravan with 100K. That was to be expected I guess as CRV's are hot - no need for the dealer to reach.

    It just happened last night so there hasn't been an estimate on it yet. But considering the entire front frame around the engine is bent and the exhaust pipe running underneath the car is bent I would say that there will be frame damage and core support damage.

    Mother-in-law has another choice. She is looking at a used 2002 Infiniti I35. It's white, has 18K miles, on it, leather, full power, in Ellicot City, MD. (Between Baltimore and DC.)

    The 2002's are too new for Edmunds to take a guess. Could you please let me know what these are doing wholesale, and what a good retail price would be.

    Anybody know what happened to Bill? I am used to seeing him carry part of the load around here.....

    Wondering if anyone could give me some insight on a trade-in value or private party value on a 2002 CRV-EX. It's black with black leather, 15,500 miles, chrome wheels, alarm w/lo-jack, roof rack, privacy glass, 6 in-dash CD and several other minor add-ons. I bought it last December.     PLEASE HELP. THIS IS MY FIRST POST SO BEAR WITH ME. I AM IN "NEGOTIATION HELL" AND IT'S AFFECTING MY MARRIAGE. HERE'S THE STORY.....

    My husband has his eyes on a 2000 XLT Ford Expedition 5.6L 8-cylider 4-speed automatic with overdrive. Added options are leather seats, CD player and dual AC. (He called me from the dealership with the info). I promptly researched in all the "right" places for the value of the car. (Edmunds, stoneage, kelly, autotrade, etc.) Basically, these are the prices quoted from the different sources: Wholesale: $16,561 and Retail: $22,257. The car dealer quoted my husband a price of $23,900. (However, their website has it listed for $22,700.) By the way, this car is still under manufacturers warranty and only has 33,000 miles on it. (I check it through carfax and found that it had been reposessed and the dealer bought it from an auction). Later that same day, My husband and I went and spoke to the dealer and when he repeated the $23,900 price I countered with $16,000. He stated that he could not go below his offer for various reasons ie, low mileage on the car, the good condition, he has to make a profit, etc. However, because he was a nice guy, he would go down to $23,000 even. I then countered at $16,500.00. He was very nice and told me that he could not go down further. I then presented him with the price that was quoted on his website. The asking price was $22,700. He looked surprise for a moment and then consulted his manager who came out and took over the negotiations. He told me that the price on the website was a drop dead price and that he would honor that price, but nothing lower. I then stated that I would buy the car for $16,800 right now. However, he wouldn't budge. (So I wouldn't budge.) He stating a reason, I would counter it. He brought up lot fees and conditioning, I stated that was the price of doing business. He brought out an invoice that stated he paid $21,000, I brought out the edmunds True Market Value page and told him he paid too much for the car. No new pricing came up (although to be fair, he was the nicest negotiator I've come across. No rolling the eyes, no heavy sighs, no overt signs of agitation, etc.) After about an hour of this, HE ENDED THE NEGOTIATION WITH A POLITE "THANK YOU FOR COMING IN, BUT I DON'T THINK I'LL BE ABLE TO SATIFY YOU". After my husband and I left, my husband was highly upset with me. He said that my initial offer was too low and that I should have offered $20,000 to show them that I was serious about buying the car. I believe that if I offered the $20,000, they would have nickel and dimed me until the price was at least was they originally asked for it. (I was willing to go up to $17,500 because we already have a bank draft from our bank with a $24,000 limit, but nothing over that.) I feel that my last offer was fair and they probably would have moved that up to the $17,500 mark with processing fees, taxes, etc.

    This is not the first time I walked away from the negotiating table. However, my husband feels that $20,000.00 is not too much to pay. Feeling a little guilty, I phoned the dealership and offered them $19,500 cash for everything. And was told that the website price was the only offer available.

    Question: Do I need to change my negotiation tactics (start low and build) or do I start with what I think someone would pay for the car (ie: midway between the asking price and the true market value??

    Please advise....My marriage may depend on it.

    ...well, understand it's not customary for a dealer asking $23,900 for a car to be kind to a 'customer' when offered $16,000. $7900 off isn't a 'counter offer', it's an insult. At least they were nice to you. What made you decide to offer a 'below wholesale' price on a retail car? Not trying to harp on you, but did you really think they'd accept? I mean, there's almost always some 'wiggle room' but not $7900, almost never even half that. I'd say as a general rule, about $1500 off the asking price is about as far as most will go. Otherwise, why even have an asking price? Or why not just put 'no haggle'? Or why not just price is super aggressively to begin with?
    Just as an aside, why was your husband mute during negotiations if he thought your tactics were out of line?

    Expeditions aren't exactly rare on the used market, but they're not distressed merchandise, either. BTW, is this a 4x4 or 2wd model? Where are you located?

    Prices I've found in the Tradin' Times in Chicago for Expeditions, just to give you an idea:

    00 XLT 4wd, third seat, no miles listed, $23990
    00 Eddie Bauer, 4x4, third seat, Mach III audio, rear air, no miles listed, $23995
    00 Eddie Bauer 4x4, no miles listed, $25498 (ow!)
    00 XLT, 4x4, 3rd seat, privacy glass, roof rack, step bars, no miles listed, $24995
    00 XLT, 4x4, third row seat, moonroof, no miles listed, $20589

    Cheapest one in this paper is $16940, it has no miles listed, I'm betting high, or that it's a screamer.

    Bottom line, you're not going to find one you like with low miles for under about $20k, at least not a 2000. Remember, these things cost $40k-ish new, so used they're a bargain, even at $20-23k.

    Find one you like, make a sincere, real offer, buy it and enjoy!

    But, there is no such thing as a $16/$18 XLT 4X4 Expedition -- unless, it has been hit more times than Joe Lewis, the interior has been used as a test area for Germ Warfare, and it has more miles than Oklahoma.

    A 33k, 2000 XLT, 4X4 Expedition (if it's nice) .. is doing 20/$21 at the block, so like I had mentioned before, the dealer did indeed pay what he said he did, plus whatever for service, tires, etc.

    Now, relax .. take another deep breath and decide on whether hubby can afford it or not --- Or, do we see you two, on the Jerry Springer show -- "wives who caught hubbys cheatin' with Expeditions". .l.o.l......

My first offer would have been $17,500 (but I don't think I would have gone too much higher than that. Expecting to be nickeled and dimed.)

    No. (I honestly didn't think they'd accept. (I would be in the thing right now if they did.) However, he did come down to $23,000 and I promptly went up to $16,500. He couldn't come down lower and that's when I showed him the printout from his website stating the car was $22,795. He then got his manager.

    Husband pretended to provide a united front with me. (He's usually good backup when we negotiate). A few years back, he and I had a disagreement at a car dealership that blew up. Outcome: We didn't get the car (a pontiac grand prix that he really wanted) and We decided that we would end negotiations first, come home and discuss it in the future. (I was suprised at his anger, because I didn't expect it. We're usually in 'sync on most things or have that JEDI thing going where we can sense each others moods.)

    Live in Virginia. Car in question is listed a 2WD on dealers website. Thanks for the info.

    #8668: I don't bite my nails and tap my feet. (I pull my hair and the bald patches are barely noticeable :-). Thanks again for the info. Now the hard question: Should I eat crow and go to the dealership and just give them what they asked for. Can afford it, I just don't have to have it. We have two cars and that's enough as far as I'm concerned but husband works hard, goes to school in his spare time and I think that if he wants it, he should get it. Would you go back to the dealership if you were me?

    Don't like Jerry, but don't be surprised to see him on Ricki Lake. ("Men Who Feel Stifled in Family Sedans and the Women Who Love Them"....

    Trying to see how much my 2000 Astro is worth. Its a sle ac, rear heat and air cd with cass., it has 26,000 and in very good shape, we live in Houston and I know the market is not great for used cars but so far I can only get 11,000 for the van. Is that not too low or is it just me?

    I researched here and found the blue book value to be aprox $2,000 for my 1989 Toyota SR5 (tacoma names was not invented yet then) 5 speed Manual, AC, Chrome Package with after market professional tinting, and 137,000 miles. I consider it in good condition (not great - but not poor either),
    the ac needs to be recharged, has always had an oil leak that even the dealer couldn't fix (cost me big $$ for nothing there) and may need front breaks though I just had them done less than a year ago. It also has some minor bumps and scrapes.

    For the year, that's not bad -- if there is no rust, still runs good, deep in rubber and the interior and exterior can clean up and it looks 96ish .. then on a trade, you should be around that $1,5/$2,0 figure - depending on the dealer.

    $11 sounds about right .. or the ultra low $11's, if it's a nice and depending on the dealer.

    ...... The miles are a little stiff, but it is the right color .. and I'm sure it's all toyed out.

    At the Block, they are doing "around $22ish .. so figure transport $150, service $200, detail $100, a this and a that $150, pack $500 - so figure they might have like, $23,5 in it when it's all said and done .. $25 or so should take it home ...

    l..o..l.... if this is the vehicle that will work for you then, Yes.

    If you drive 80 miles to the east or 75 miles to the south, you are still going to pay in and around those figures for a comparable vehicle .. So, enjoy it - and no more anxiety..

    Any advice on my 2002 Civic SI. It was white with 1600 miles. 5-speed, sunroof, power everything, CD, and not a scratch on it. How much would it have been worth in that condition vs. after having the whole front end repaired? They have yet to appraise the damage but the engine was moved back several inches, the electricals around the engine are toast, the impact bent the exhuast pipe underneath the car which knocked the rear bumper out of line, and the front core around the engine is pushed back and damaged.

    I'm not sure if they can fix it but if they try to I would like a ball park of how much diminished value would be reasonable on a car that new.

    Although my parents got less than what you said, they were happy. The were able to get into an 02 CRV at MSRP with wheel locks and flaps tossed in. My dad went for some extras (window vents, step bars which I could've done for less) but what matters is the deal was to their satisfaction.

    Like you said, the price is the price today. The dealer could've had (25) 99 LX autos in heathermist sitting out back for all I know and the CRV took 8 weeks to come in. Similar to my Ody - we waited 12 weeks and then were offered $250 for our Escort which I sold to my SIS 3 months later for almost 8 times that.

    As for the BMW Sport Wagon - DW put the kybosh on it. "We don't need a new car"!!! I've learned not to fight. The next new car is mine and she is open to almost any idea - as long as it's at least a year away. Like I said, I come across these vehicles at the worst time.

    Gidday Terry & Bill,

    I have a 96 white Explorer XLT in good mechanical condition(clean) with all the options(leather,CD player etc)93K miles. The dealer said they wouldn't even keep it on their lot to resell because of the year. To get rid of it they would send it to the auction. What could I expect to get for it as a trade on a new Explorer from the dealer?.

    And saw a 1988 Saab 900 SPG Turbo(Special Performance Group)

    Factory CD, Slider, Ice Cold Air (according to the description on the car) stick shift, and cowhide to sit on, the color is mostly gray with 155K miles worth of nicks and dings.

    Just curious how much crack the seller is smoking asking $5500 for a 14 year old car.

    Thanks guys for the great service you provide. Do you think that places like Carmax are more likely to give you a good price than a dealer where you are trading in for a new vehicle? I am ordering a new car (audi a4), and will have a 3 mo wait while it is built, shipped from Germany, etc. Not sure how I should approach the value of trade in, since obviously I can't trade it in (96 Acura Integra LS sedan with 57K) now as I would have nothing to drive for 3 mos--
    Any thought about how to handle this besides sell it privately--I just don't have the time, or the inclination although I realize I would get more $.

    ...... Good question .. I wish I could answer it.... l..o..l....

    A lot of dealers will put a figure on a vehicle that they may not see, for a few months.

    I would have the vehicle detailed out .. so they can "see" what they are buying .. and they can put a figure in "writing", that you both agree on for the future -- keep in mind the vehicle will have to come back as you both "agreed" on -- that doesn't mean the back seat is full of piazza boxes and Satan signs grooved down the side ..l.o.l... try it with the dealer and see - or Carmax - or try to sell it yourself, which doesn't seem to be your cup of tea.

    THE right color combo .. would do a little stronger with the V8, but it will sell, you should be in and around that $22ish figure on a trade.

    I listed the GC described in message #8695 on autotrader.com. I have received no serious inquiries yet. It has been about 3 1/2 weeks. I have the price at $24,500 now. I'm willing to go down to $23,500 (payoff). I'd much rather sell it privately for $23,500 than to trade it in for $22,000. I'm getting anxious to get rid of it because all the current specials on '02 models expire Sep. 3. Do you think I should stick it out longer or go ahead and trade it in? How long does it typically take to sell a vehicle privately? Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Maybe this may work:

    Non-smoker, must see, must sell.
    $24,500 XXX-XXX-XXXX

    Give it a run for at least 14 days .. you will know in the first 7/8 days, with the holiday coming up -- what's going down.
