I assume the 9-3 is a base model, not SE (no power seats mentioned)? I think white is good in FL, not as good in Chicago, but from what I've seen, that car would probably sell for about $13k retail at my local (Perillo on Diversey in Chicago) Saab dealer. A friend of mine bought a 98 900SE (the immediate predecessor to your 9-3) 5-door, 5-speed, black with 51k miles for $12k about six-eight months ago from there. The cheapest '99 9-3 S they have right now (also w/56k miles) is stickered at $14.9k, which means they'll probably take $13k. So sounds like your dealer is more than a bit low, you could easily throw that in the Chicago Tribune for like $13k and take $12k, you'd do better than your dealer and the buyer will be getting a bargain, I'd say. You just have to decide if it's worth the work to travel to sell it. Good luck.

You'd be surprised how much of a difference that third seat might make on that Expedition.

.... Oooh, babe .. too many miles on this puppy and it will flat kill it on a trade. Not to hurt anyones feelings, but even with low miles, the Villagers aren't setting the market on fire ...

If it's super clean and it looks like it has 30k on it .. it will do in and around $3/$3,5 on a trade .. sorry.

    ... Hmmm, interesting ..

Even though it's 80+ degree's across the country, the smell of fall is in the air, perhaps cuz Football is on .. l..o..l..

Most of the Yankee dealers are already on the hunt for some of that 4X4 action .. the miles are stiff on this one, so no help there .. no 3rd seat, no help there .. -- but, if this is as clean as you say it is .. Ya know, knee deep in rubber, interior doesn't look like the Packers been having having practice and lunch there, and the exterior shows like it has no parking lot kisses or gang warfare. .. I gotta think it's worth more than $12, it's gotta be worth at least $13 on a trade.

I feel the biggest problem here is, you are trading at a Yota store .. kinda remember, in their eyes, nothing is worth more than a Yota, I would shop around. ..

I bet, if you put that in the paper (nice big ad!) for $15,9 .. you would see $14,7/$15,500 in a heartbeat ..

    Let us know ....

...... It's the right color, especially on a day like today, with all the rain and such .l.o.l...

No SE right .? the G Man thinks not ..

So Fields hit it at $8,0 .. let's see, it's a handshaker, that makes it tuff and the miles are stiff for the year .. not much going on here. It "may" be worth a little more on a trade .. but, not much more, even up north.

If you want some Xtra Jingle for this Svedish Vehicle, then you need to go down Retail Rd .. these are funny little vehicles, with quirky buyers. In the Orlando paper for $11,9 (for a quick sale) .. and $10,7/$11,5 should drop kick it off the driveway .. the handshaker cut's that buying market by 70%.

    good luck ...

    Terry.

For comparison, some Villagers that were similar that just sold at dealer retail to the customer.
    98 Villager 80K, $7100 Included 2year warranty.
96 Villager 105K, $3300, as-is but service checks verified good overall condition.

Realize that even if the dealer could sell it for $6000 absolute maximum on a good day, they will need about $2500 to cover the reconditioning and service checks and business related costs while they sit on it trying to find someone willing to buy it with 115K. Real world wholesale auction is around $2500, if it is in as good of condition as you claim add about $1000 for trade IF the dealer thinks they can sell it within 45 days.
  • dkuhajdadkuhajda Member Posts: 487
3.8L headgaskets are a killer and dealers know it, add the Ford transmission problems that they improved in the 96 model year and later and you are left with a vehicle most dealers will wholesale off at auction. Typical auction wholesale in average condition $1000 give or take. This is the kind of vehicle we see at the buy here pay here car lots all the time and you might want to go to one of them that is light on minivans and ask for an offer on the Windstar to get a better idea what actual dealer cash value is on it.

If the vehicle is immaculate, you have documentation for ALL service records as recommended in your owners manual, a recent certifiable inspection and you will be much better off selling it outright. It would go for about $3000 at retail in good condition.

There is a 96 Windstar advertised at a local dealership at $4,000 with just under 100K. Plus they offer a 30 day 3000 mile limited warranty on all vehicles and a 50/50 one year on the powertrain. They have had this vehicle since the Memorial day tent sale!!!

saw this in a dealers ad, and it caught my attention:

1999 Mitsu Eclipse spyder, V6, spyder, 51k on it. Usual power options. Not sure about the model (if there is a choice) or color.

Whats realistic retail in NJ, given the fact that summer is about over?

I don't even want to know what I can get for my maxima, so I won't ask.

    Terry,

Mom sold the 94 Cutlass (10,800 miles) I asked you about a couple of weeks ago. Asked $5000 like you said, local Texaco mechanic offered $4000, said battery was shot (could be true) and needed window motor (also true). Mom said split the difference, $4500 (lowest you said to take), he said sold. Had cashiers check from local bank in 20 minutes, he picked up the Olds on a flatbed, cleaned out the trunk etc., and brought all her stuff back to her. Maybe we could have got more, but no ad, no whining, and no need for me to go to Fla. to sell car. Thanks again.

Thanks for the response to my message (#8750). Realize a 2wd (even with locking rear?) would have a lower value here vs. the South. Wondering if TVM/Kelly actually differentiate 2 vs. 4 wd in their estimates, as I specifically noted this entering info on their sites...

    Expert folks have an answer?

I have a 97 VW Cabrio Highline with 44K miles on it. I am trying to get a good feel for the real world trade in value. It has leather seats, MT, and power everything. Does not have CD player. Condition would fit the "clean" category.

    What do you think?

....... How are you ..? thats a big move ..l.o.l..

It's a 2WD and the miles are a little stiff for the year .. if it's a clean one, knee deep and needing -0-, then it should do in and around the $22's on a trade ..

If they are at a flat $20, then something is wrong (damage, paintwork, interior is bad.?) . .. if, the vehicle was ruff and had 50k, it would do $19/$20 for the Dallas boys.

    I hope this helps ...

  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
..... Well you are a NJ boy .. and most of the dealers, are lookin' to get out of converts up there ..

Miles are stiff on this one .. but it's pretty to look at. They were doing a big # about 6wks ago up north, so depending "when" they took this in trade, can be a big deciding factor .. I'm gonna guess, if they took it in on trade 6/8 wks ago, they "could" have over $14 in it .. if they took it in recently , maybe the $12's ... so, go from there and see what happens.

    rroyce10,

Thanks. It be a little hard here-between paying state income tax, a pending winter, and a lack of scenery I was used to in TX (and I don't mean trees)..Haven't run into Hillary yet!

Why such the difference between what you and the dealers are saying and what TVM/Kelly is quoting? Are these just plain bull? All I can figure is the coin the dealer wants to get selling to the wholesaler, and his subsequent pound of flesh, which would put her back in the high 20's. Just need to tell mama to hang with it?

luckily i have a computer in my room.. but why the hyundai stigma??? i saw a 2001 elantra with 11k miles going for $8900. so i would have the bulk of the 5/60k warranty left. also for the same car (prism/corolla) your talking about 2-3k more. i think hyundais get a bad rap these days. im on message boards constantly researching and much of the time people rate their hyundais higher than toyota or honda. also i thought i would get a sweet deal because of low resale value, but i see them going used for the same price as new.

i know your the expert here but why are some many sales people so anti hyundai??? it looks like there are many happy hyundai owners out there and many more dissatisfied toyota and honda owners lately.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,345
Thanks Terry. Kids got the convert bug last weekend, riding in their uncles S2000.

The spyder is at a Toyota dealer, listed at $14,995. Might have to stop by and check it out. Looks OK, but needs an interior detail. Also came from Texas, based on the dealer emblem on the rear (Houston).

When you guys get a moment, I've had someone expressed interest on my 2000 Saab 9-3 Base model. The car is due to be turned in (from it's lease) at the beginning of this December. Here's what you need to know:

Good Condition: The rear bumper definitely needs to be repainted (from parking on the lovely streets of NY of course). The Driver's side Fog Light casing cracked (but the fog light still works). There's a scratch by the Passenger side rear wheel well (From My Mother driving through some HOT ASPHALT). The wheel well scratch is only noticable when you get really close.

    Silver Exterior
    Charcoal Leather Interior
    Automatic Transmission
    35,000 miles
    2.0L Turbo 16V I-4 (185hp/185 lb-ft torque)
    Power Glass Moonroof
    Heated Seats
    Power Windows/Locks/Mirrors
    Manual AC Blows cold
Manual Seats (Power was only available on the SE at the time)
    Cruise Control

    Did I leave anything out?

The buyout on the car is something like $16 & change. I know the car isn't worth that and since the new 9-3 is coming out in October that my car is pretty much going to go to auction. How much should I tell the guy?

I've still got the original Michelin MXV4 tires on the car that came with it.

I just glazed (3M) and waxed the car over the weekend and thanks to some thick sheet metal and good paint, the car looks great!

I'm posting this here because you guys are here quite a bit...

Can you tell me if you've heard this: There is rumor that MB is settling a suit involving oil issues by offering to extend the warranty on all 98-00 vehicles to a total of 10 years/ 100k miles plus a $35 coupon?

Apparently, there was a class action brought up because of synthetic vs. regular oil with respect to maint schedules.

FWIW, I saw a couple go through EBAY a month or so back (just watching), basically the same as yours. Very clean, from a local high-end used car dealer. BOth had about 60K miles, and went for about 12.5K. Adjust for condition and miles, and make up a number, which has to be less than 16K.

    I'd guess 12k on a trade?

Looking at an older truck for hubby. We will have no trade in (long story). I drove this truck today and it seems good except for a suspicious temp guage (probably a temp sending unit) needs an alignment, and a rough tranny.....it shifts, but is abrupt. Its sitting at the ford dealer and they say they passed it through the shop with flying colors and has been there for 2 months. Ok, here goes:

1995 Ford F-250, XLT, x-cab, Powerstroke diesel, auto, 4WD, pwr windows, locks, pwr driver's side seat, am/fm cass, a/c, silver & white/gray, nice matching canopy, running boards, tires 50%, cb radio, electric brake controller, no moose encounters or other accidents, one owner, looks like an '01 inside and out, runs perfect. Now for the miles....are you sitting down?? If not you better sit down. This gem has 161,620 miles on it. The dealer is asking $11,995, but my long time friend who is a salesperson there says they are in it around $8500 or so. I'm thinking $9500 is all the money and a bag of eskimo pies. What do you think?

Referring to your msg#8776. The reason that the numbers you see here differ from the popular "books", is, the simple fact, these guys put their money where their mouth is every day. The "books" are compiled from public records that may or may not be accurate and are certainly out of date by the time they are published. From my experience, and it goes back a looong way, the numbers you see here are about as close to reality as you'll find anywhere.

Recently, my wife and I started looking to buy a new Forester or possibly RAV4 (leaning towards Subaru Forester). Anyway, I wanted to see what they would offer for our '94 Toyota 4Runner SR5 V6 4x4. Our 4Runner is fully loaded! I've obviously checked the TMV on edmunds, but wanted to see what a "real world trade in" might look like. My 4Runner has 94,800 miles; Automatic; sliding moon roof, power windows, doors, antenna, tilt, cruise, CD player, towing, luggage rack, etc. Does not have leather seats and a winch, but basically has everything else! I was offered $3500 and $4100, both amounts seemed like an insult. ANY HELP??? I feel like I'm being taken... so we just walked out!! But, I'd like to go back with some "real world" info ;) Thanks! .... The figures do seem low .. but, what does this vehicle look like ..?

Is it clean, is it deep in rubber, does the interior look like a 99, is the exterior few in lumps, bumps and parking lot kisses .? What does it need .?

Kinda keep in mind, how you view a your vehicle can be totally different than how a dealer will perceive it .. anytime you go to trade it, have that puppy cleaned and detailed.

All that said, I would think the vehicle is worth in and around the strong $5's on a trade - it's a V6, 4x4, slider, it has all the right stuff .. and the miles are low for the year.

    I hope this helps ...

...... There is a few miles on this little darlin' .. but it seems to have all the right stuff, Ecab, 4x4, stroker, XLT, plus it's a nice color .l.o.l.

$11,900 ..huh.? Seems fair ..... if, it has a brand new Yamaha 1100 jet ski in the back of it.

I'm with you, $9,5ish ... just make sure you make the adjustment for the AMC ..

I posted a question about a week ago regarding my 01 Grand Cherokee. It's a Limited, 4x4, V6, leather, white, beige leather, cd changer, and sunroof. I'm in the St. Louis area. It's listed on autotrader.com for $24,500. I have received three inquiries in the past 4 weeks, but no one has been serious. It was mentioned that I try the local newspaper, but I am concerned that I won't get any results there either. Is the price too high? Do you think the local newspaper is worth my time and money? Are the Jeeps just not a good vehicle to sell privately? Do you think a $22,000 trade in allowance is possible on a new car that's sold at invoice? I'm getting anxious to get rid of it and get a good deal on a 2002. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

..... Shawn, you may want to .. also.. put that "fat daddy" in the largest paper in your area with a big, fat, 5 liner ad ..

I'm not a sold person on the autotrader deal ..

    Maybe this may work:

02 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited, loaded,
Like new, Leather, sunroof, alloys, etc.
    only 12,000 miles. Adult driven
    Non-smoker, must see, must sell.
    $24,500 XXX-XXX-XXXX

Give it a run for at least 14 days .. you will know in the first 7/8 days, with the holiday coming up -- what's going down.

A quick sale of $23,5/$24,0 might work ..

    good luck ....

    Terry.

PS. Just make sure, it looks like a "baby doll" and have all the service stuff and history sittin' on the front seat.

PSPS. Don't get too greedy, you know your finances best of all .. don't get shy at $23/ $23,2/$23,4 .. well you get the picture.

    ______________________________________________

    Shawn,

Auto trader is fine for folks that have lotsa time and get a big kick out of lookin' at the color prints of their vehicle ..

But the "market penetration" sucks .. you need to get in the paper with a Big Fat 5 liner ad.

It's white .. right.? and you are waaaay up in the north beach area. (man that was some kind of tornado you guys had) .. it's a handshaker(no help there) but, the miles are low for the year, it's a highline so you got all the stuff.

It is actually a 2000 that I leased in December 1999 so the car is technically 3 years old so I understnad it can seem as if I have a 2 year old 9-3 with 35,000 miles. I wish I could have leased it with a stick, but the car actually has a slushbox (as long as you're calling a stick a handshaker). I wasn't looking to trade it in, but sell it to someone (and make a couple of bucks) who expressed interest instead of just turning the car in. I wanted to know what I should tell him my asking price is. Thanks again for your help!

Don't feel bad:) The car is leased and if worse comes to worse, I'll just turn the car in;)
