'96 Acura 3.5RL - Dark Green w/ 78K miles, Premium trim (loded w/ the exception of navi)
Shape wise, I would say it's average - couple scratches here and there...

The car is located in Chicago area...

My guess is somewhere around $13,500 +/- couple hundred $.

    ???
    Thanks

2000 Maxima SE dark green, tan leather, all options (bose, 17" wheels, 6 cd changer, moonroof, etc.) 5 spd, only 9800mi. The car is perfect, there's only a small (1") scratch on one wheel.

My lease on a '98 Toyota RAV4 2-door soft-top model is up in a month, and I'm deciding if I should walk away or possibly buy it to use as a trade-in.

My Lease-End Purchase price seems low compared to comparable models in the market (like $4K+ Cdn), but the real issue is the soft-top. This softtop model was made for < 2 years before being discontinued.

I dont know if this helps me (because its rare) or hurts me (because it was obviously an unpopular model)

    Any opinions?

not sure what it is worth, but I need a car and would consider it at a good price, since it fits my criteria of room/equipment/fun to drive, plus it is a stick.

Where are you, and why are you selling it if it is so nice and new?

had a chance to drive the GS400. Way faster than I was used to. Seemed to have a nice combo of ride/handling, but everything is relative. I could live with it, though it did have a small trunk.

It was brown metallic, I assume this is the poo poo brown, which wouldn't be my first choice, but is also why the car is fairly cheap.

What would be a good price for a GS300 then, based on auction figures? Assume a decent color (I like green and blue).

Thanks for the great service, guys. I'm about to trade in my 98 Protege LX with 28,000 miles. It's a 5-speed, unfortunately, and doesn't have any other extras. I'm in NC, and the local CarMax offered me $7,000, which is in line with the KBB "good" level. It's in perfect shape, but I certainly am not going to steam clean the engine or anything like that.

    Any advice?

    Thanks.

Let me down easy. We have a 98 Blazer LS 2wd 4 door with all the options but leather. It has 37k miles and is garage kept, very clean. What's it worth on a trade in?
  • 96_i30_5sp96_i30_5sp Member Posts: 127
We need to buy a house and I'm trying to come up with 20% down for it. The car is very solid and hasn't been to the dealer for any warranty work. I'm not desperate to sell it, just looking for an idea of what it's worth.

    Hi Bill, Terry and everyone,
I recently purchased a well maintained ( with dealer service record) 4-door 98 Acura Integra GS-R with 12,500 miles on it for $15000. I live in Chicago. The car is in like new condition. Is this a fair deal? Another car that I consider is Saab 97 SE turbo for 14,500 with 33000 miles on it? did I make a right decision? Thanks for your help

.......Good guess.....you are probably close to the money.....but, a little closer to the minus side....I'm thinkin' more towards that $12,000 ish figure or maybe less....with no help with those miles...

I like the 3.5 RL's but they are a little cold ...and stiff with competition..

    Hope this help's

Not too many years ago, the dealers would comment (and show the maintenance record) of the clean, mint condition one owner car. Now it seems that most "pre-owned" vehicles are purchased at auction. Don't dealerships ever keep and sell the vehicles traded in at the dealership?
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
......ooooh, you guy's with your meat clevers....

Maxima's are stil holding pretty good ...it's got the Bose and the wheels ..spoiler I hope...and the miles are right..color is ok..but that darn 5 speed..Oh well, this will work for you as far as price goes...Those are running through the block at that $17,500 to $18,000 figure....

    I hope this help's

....Those little bugger's are still popular....and it "seems" that ...the door's and soft top "might" not hurt it too much.....but, I would really have to have more info...tran's, stereo, wheels, miles..etc....pay-off..?

  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
.......I like those GS400's...I have had a couple of them....I bought one a couple of weeks ago..Cinnabar..with a new set of Ronal 17" LVU wheels and spoiler.....I liked it, and it sold in about 14 minutes....

I don't much like the brown...and Bill is right -- these vehicles are really priced on color...I will pay a extra $500 to $800 for a pearl, silver (cinnabar...Bill doesn't like that color either..l.o.l.) ..etc....

But, if the miles are right....and the vehicle -is all there- ..and the price is right....Hey, go for it - if you like it....

No sale, blue huh....the GS300's ...I think, we are still talking ..98's ? .. --- are running around that ( low miles 35k or less -- needs nothing and look's new ) ....are in that that $26,000 - $27,000 ish range...if it's super nice..25k or less I have seen them get close to $28,000.....like anything else......if they are real nice, and the miles are real low....they will get a little more money.....That' one thing that's hard to shop....miles.....

Damn... so much for Acuras not depreciating fast... That price pretty much puts it in the Honda Accord territory!!! Good thing I bought the car at the dealer auction (went w/ friend) and paid wholesale...
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,330
Thanks Terry. My front runners right now are the '98 GS (sorry Bill), but that could change once my wife sees it, '98 528i (a perennial favorite), '98-'00 S70 of some variety or a new Acura TL (can get a blow-out price). A new Passat GLX could be a sleeper.

All these cars will be in the same vague price range (25-28K), so it's just a matter of picking the right one.

......It's a trauma.....Do we want style and sport...Do we want style, class and sport ....or do we want style, class, sport...and groovy look's ...l..o..l...

Well, the good thing is....you are looking at very good vehicles..all of them..Just drive them all.... --- See, most people's range get's so blinded ... My neighbor is killing me -- He's comparing a Park Ave, Eldo, Saab and a Mazda Millenia....I just run to my car when I leave, what is he thinking.?...l...o...l......

Acura's are wonderful vehicles.... and a 4 dr Gsr..with low miles is a good find
And the price is reasonable.....and that Acura will be running when the Saab is being made into little wooden shoes......l....o....l......

Thanks for the estimate on the 2000 Maxima. I just came from Carmax and they offered me $18,500. They couldn't find any blemishes on it, in fact the notes said "well maintained SE with auto climate and CD Changer". :)
  • goralgoral Member Posts: 149
I don't know the name of the auction, but it's located south west of Chicago (in either Alsip or Midlothian - 126th and Central to be exact).
I bought it last January - w/ 59K miles, the selling price was ~$17K + auction fees + my friend's (more like acquaintance ) commision + TTL. Out the door, I paid ~$19K.
Still, for this car to depreciate this much is ridiculous... I should have bought '99 Passat (w/ 25K miles) - my friend would have sold me one for < $17K out the door...

Regarding the Accord - I know it's not worth QUITE as much, but the Accord's MSRP was probably ~$23K, whereas the RL listed at $41K. Even if the Accord sold @ $22K and the RL @ $37, that's still $15K difference that's down to $3K after 5 years... :(
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    OK...

I think $12,500 or so on the RL, Terry may be light on it but that color is a bit weaker here in FL than it will be in Chicago.

As far as the Maxima goes.. $17,500 is what I think... to $18K if it's super nice.

  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Well,

I dont really have much Canadian Data... but my thought is to just turn it in. I'd run it by a few Toyota dealers and see what they might give you for it compared to your lease buyout.

Poo-Poo Brown BAD! Nooooo Poo-Poo Brown. See why it's cheap? Good luck shifting that car in the future.

Hmm... 98 GS300? I'm with Terry... $27K Be wholesale... now that I go and review em a bit... So $29.950 on a Silver one is a good price. Of course offer em $28K and all :)

    NOW GO DRIVE AN XJ8!

    Bill
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
Yup... $7K is fair for it if it's in nice shape. It is a stick, but it's also low miles...

    Well,

I clicked on your profile... 2WD SUVs in the northeast are a bit weak. Especially with the fluffy white stuff on the ground...

Still, I'm pegging it at approx $12K.. perhaps a bit more but it is a 2WD in the winter...

    Sorry :(

  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Welll......

You stole it! I could see that car doing that at auction with those miles!

Good job! :) And... IMHO, SAABs are problematic and weird...

    But thats just my opinion...

    Well,

With the advent of leasing... the super clean, low-mile 1 owner trade is much scarcer. However when we do get em I do tout them a lot. I wish I could get more...

  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
Well, at least youy did buy it right. RLs as a rule have weak resale... Integras do well, and TLs also seem to be strong, but those RLs fall hard.

    Still, I think it's a nice car!

........Not to bore you with this silly stuff......But, most dealer's will keep..advertise and do everything they can, to market this -- low mileage, 1 owner, creampuff....

But, perhaps because of timing, color, barometric pressure, alignments of the moon..etc...this 1998, xyz car with 21,000 miles on it..and new tires, the oil and filter has been done every 3000 miles plus this person has over serviced it...etc.....just won't move. ....... --- I scratch my head...look out the window...I will talk to my self and say..Gee whiz, if I was looking for a XYZ car that's it.!..That's the cleanest one I have ever seen....no miles, perfect condition...it's "Cleaner than the board of health...and twice as sanitary".....what's up..? --- and the next thing I know..90 day's later, off it goes to the auction......and, the next thing I see is , It's at a store down the street...and it sell's in 1 day.....Go figure....

This is a very un-perfect business ( contrary to what some people think ).....but, that's the flea's that come with the dog.......but, anyway....I always hunt for those low mileage, clean cars.....because, everyone want's one...

    Maybe this makes sense...

Will even well known value holding cars still hold their value when 8-10 years old with high mileage? I typically keep my cars about 7-8 years and average 25,000 miles/year. Even though its a Toyota when I looked at trading it in, the car dealers low ball their offers despite what I've looked up on Kelly's Blue Book. At what I'm getting offered it's better that I run the car into the ground for another two years. It's '94 so I figure on not even considering trading until late 2002 and put 200,000 miles on it.

Is there any particular reason WHY RLs have such poor resale value?
Makes me wish I had bought a Q45... At least I knew they were dropping like a stone :)

'99 Ford Expedition 4x4, White, 4.6L V8, all options excpet 17" wheels and tires.

38K miles, OK condition, Colorado vehicle.

    What say you?

I ask because this is my vehicle and the lease is coming due in a few months. Looking for some good, impartial data to compare to my residual to help make a decision as to whether I should buy my truck or not.

    Thanks!

    Brentwood,

Just thought I'd let you know that I got $6,500 for my Millenia S w/ 130,000 miles, cracked windshield, bad CV Joints and check-engine light on...trade in. The Audi/Jag dealer has a big used car operation catering to people that would like semi-luxury cars but can't afford new. Therefore he didn't need to wholesale it out, but could recondition it himself and sell it. As I said, the car still ran GREAT, but I'm now sitting pretty in my new A4.

I opted not to sell private party because I had no clue how much money it would take for me to get the check engine light off...knowing that most people don't like buying used high mile cars w/ check engine lights on. Though my registration was paid, the tags were 2 months overdue since I hadn't been smogged - and w/ O2 sensor warnings I may have been a gross polluter - didn't want that. On top of that, I've heard horror stories about waiting months and months, with no bites. By that time I would have done the repairs, and not recooped any of them in the trade in.

Thanks again for your input - it did help give me a reality check (though I do think you were a little on the low side...but hey, don't all people trading in their cars think that ;-). The dealer the day before said at the high-side he'd be able to give me $5K (more in line w/ your estimate, but still higher), but most likely less. So when I got this offer w/ a good price on the car I had to take it.

Thanks again for being a great help to us trade-inners.

P.S. Sorry for this rambling message - too busy at work to go back and make it more readable.

I remember, some of you guys promised to give me a hint about trade-in value of my car. It is
2000 BMW m-coupe 19K miles, RED, good condition.

P.S. It is not M3 coupe, it is m-coupe - like z3 but 240 hp.

...........Good question, ....I'm thinking, because of the Lexus ES300 and LS400...and a bevvy of others..5 series Bimmers..Toyota Avalon's etc....

The RL, really never found it's niche...It was too small, to compete with 400's it was to expensive to compete with the 300's....it didn't have enough ponies to compete with the Bimmer crowd....and, it was way overpriced to compete with the Avalon drivers......Don't mis-understand me.....I love the RL's....and, I have gone and gotten a bunch for customers...It's a lot of car for the money...is it the best looking .maybe not,..the fastest ..heck no, .....But it's probably a best buy on the used side.....and, they don't break.....

    Maybe this makes sense....

    Well,

That's a tough call. Basically, anything with 175-200K miles on it is going to be a car worth very very little.

It's a matter of what we can even get for it on a wholesale level. A 96 Range Rover 4.6 That I know of (Beluga Black.. Beige Leather... PERFECT condition, a really nice one) Just sold wholesale for $9,500.

    150,000 Miles.

    That's what killed it...

  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Well,

Umm, First please dont take this personal :)

I think a lot of it is what Terry said. Basic V6 Engine when the other Luxoboat Japanese cars had V8s, Weak and Bland styling, a real lack of Image, and it was a touch overpriced IMHO.

Also Acura doesnt have the "cachet" of other Luxury brands. I think the Integra is a big part of this...

    Bill
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Well...

$19K or so is where I'd say the money is on it on a wholesale level.. $22-23K or so retail.

I'd certainly try negotiating with Ford Credit tho.. it's worth a shot!

    Bill
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
Wow.... you did VERY Well! That's about what the 60-70K mile ones categoried as "clean" are doing at auction.

Terry, what were your thoughts on this one?

    Bill
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
If I remember right this car is in New Jersey... And this assumes a nice back bumper.

I'd peg the actual wholesale on it at around $27-28K or so right now... I dont have a lot of data to go on (There arent many of them around) but a few with much lower mileage (5K-10K) have sold for $30-32K...

Hope this helps. Terry, what do you think?

    Bill
  • goralgoral Member Posts: 149
    No sweat :)
It's only a car, not an extension of my ... :)
As a matter of fact when I went to the auction, I didn't even plan on buying it... I was actually looking for some nice BMWs or Audis, but nothing special was available at that time.
I bought the car in an emergency...

Anyway, thanks for the info... my wife will probably have to drive it into the ground (hopefully not before I finish off my '91 Legend w/ 116K miles :) )

As rroyce stated, even with it's shortcomings, it's still one hack-of-a-car...
  • michaellnomichaellno Member Posts: 4,120
Thanks for the info on the Expedition. So, in 6 or 7 months, a wholesale value of approx $17K would be about right.

Have to see what Ford says as we get close to lease end....
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
Yeah... the way youre going my guess is you'll be closer to 50K miles... that should be fair.

What's on your contract? And if Audia8q sees this... he knows Ford Credit far better than I.

.......Well my friend......If I were you, I would be already out, and celebrating St. Patricks Day......that's the whole ..."Coma Se' Yama.....and a bag of chips" .......I see them all the time at the auctions...almost clean, 50k running through at a $7,000 ish number.....So, you must have the luck of the Irish.......

    Enjoy....

.........I think Bill is pretty darn close.....The miles bother me a little.....I was at the Big Manheim( PA ) last week, and saw a few run....none got close to $30,000.......I think, with the vehicle all set to go ..and perfect -- $28,500 might, be the end of the world.....But, like Bill say's .....they are not around a enough yet, to stablize their own market.....

    hope this helps
