I've owned mine for four years now and still love this car. As a man who has owned many fine cars, this one stands out as exceptional. I'm considering a change, drove the BMW330, Audi A4, Lexus IS300, none seemed so temping after returning to my good old J. It has an interior that continues to please, speaks quality in volumes, is a very fast stable high speed cruiser, handles beautifully and rewards enthusiasm. I'm only sorry the resale value is is low. Guess its unique look isn't attractive to most. I've had no problems after 60,000. Have driven it in snow on ski trips and got away with it. I still love this car, but am also restless for something new. I'd recommend one to anyone as long as its been cared for, there should be no problems. They are pretty bullet proof with less then 100,000. Good Luck!
I agree. I test drove the new Lexus IS300 and thought that it was lame, much like a waay overpriced Nissan Maxima but less powerful. Acuras are nice but very tight and uncomfortable unless you can afford a 3.5RL. The other acuras are like souped up Honda Accords. Lexus are nice but waay overpriced even used, you'd have to shell out almost 25k for a decent used one. I like BMW but they are really small and not too reliable unless one gets a 740i. Mercedes are ok but small and expensive. So for the bucks I love my J30t over almost all other cars. It rides nice it corners well and has plush luxury. Sad that Infiniti decided to quit making them tho.
I recently upgraded my entire system on my J30 and have the original CD/Tape/AM/FM head unit in prestine condition for sale. There is nothing wrong with it, but I wanted to add a CD Changer and some amps to my car, so if interested let me know - my e-mail is: majeskyj@yahoo.com
Does anyone know of a good website that sells factory standard Infiniti chrome J30t wheels at discounted price? I'd like to spruce up my J30t with some new wheels.
I was at the dealer last week for a oil change and i asked if they were ever going to make the J again. They said that in 2003 a new rear wheel drive car will be out. They dont know what they will call it yet, but are thinking about calling it the j.Lets keep our fingers crossed!
Hi..I've enjoyed reading all the postings and finally decided to write. I have a 1997 J30 with 14,000 low use miles on it. I am wondering if anyone knows if by NOT using the car regularly I am in the long run causing it harm. I have a friend with a Benz that wasn't used much and ended up having to spend alot on repairs from lack of use.I don't want to be in that situation! Any information would be really appriceated. Thanks in advance for your thoughts!
I do know that the seals will go bad. i let my J30t sit for 1 year while i was out of the country and i had to spend about 2000 on new gaskets and seals to stop oil leakes. You need to drive your car! Not to mention the other rubber parts that could rot like bushings etc.
I have the chance to buy a '93 J with only 40,000 miles on it for about $10,000. It's in great shape and runs very well. However, the interior has the smell of smoke. Does anyone know of a product or products that can REALLY remove this odor? Any help would be appreciated.
Just bought a '93 J with 54,000 on it. My wife really loves the car. She'd like to get some accessories such as; gold emblems, gold exhaust tips, etc... Can anyone suggest a website or other outlet that would offer these things? Thanks in advance.
I'm having a mechanic check out a '94 J with 51,000 miles on it. He says that when the car is warm and in gear but stopped, there is a pronounced knocking sound. He's not sure if its serious or not. Can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks
I have had my J30t for two weeks, nicest car I've ever driven. Sometimes I turn corners just to enjoy the feel, what is it? Also: Question- I experience an occasional whirring noise when I am backing down the driveway. The dealer said the brake calipers make a noise when they release. But what I hear is a whirring noise that lasts about 2 seconds then stops until the next morning, I do notice the brake peddle softens slightly when the noise starts. Is it likely the brakes? And what does it take to fix? Thanks for all the good comments.
I am going to test drive 93 J30 this weekend. This car already has about 110k on it, and the owner want to sell it at $5,500. He said the car is in good shape and runs great. Can anyone give idea what should be right price, and what to look for when I test drive.
I did some studies, and they said this car need to change timing bell at 80,000k. Is it right, and how much it normally cost, because I may have to change the timing bell if I am going to buy this car.
Nissan injectors don't seem to be made for California formulated gasoline. I had an '86 Maxima that started smelling like gas. I was braced for a huge repair bill, then found that Nissan had issued a recall which replaced all my injectors and solved the problem. Wouldn't it be fair for them to the same for the J30?
I recently purchased a 1993 J30 with 36k original miles from a Lexus dealership and paid $7,900.00 for it. Any advice out there from J30 owners? Did I get a good deal? Is there anything I should be wary of? (*I called a local Infiniti Dealer before buying it, and I got lucky - because they sold the car to a Dr. and had all service records on it - verifying the actual miles) Also they said I could buy a 2-yr 24k warranty for $800.00 - is this recommended? I read someone getting a 100K warranty - how do I get that?????? Thanks!
Edmunds says the true market value for your car is around $10k. You got a very good deal indeed. As far as a warranty goes, I strongly recommend it. After doing considerable research into Warrantybynet (I spoke with the insurance company that underwrites the warranties)I purchased a 48 month/50,000 miles policy from them for $1,280. It covers everything except the audio system. You can find them at www.warrantybynet.com. They even offer an 8 month payment plan at not interest. Good luck on your J experience.
We should all set up a time to be in a chat room. If you are on AOL lets set it up! What do all of you think? It would be great to swap info in real time.
I am about to purchase a '93 J30 for my first car. The dealer wants $5299 for it. It has 99,800 miles. New transmission, new tires, new timing belt. Excellent condition, quiet and smooth. I drove/tested it yesterday. Here is what I came up with and I need to get some advice on what the problems are with this car.
#1) Trunk Solenoid is broken (last owner tells me that that is the problem. Trunk wont open with remote or from the interior release. only the key will open it.)
#2) Sunroof makes sound when open or close button is pressed but doesnt open all the way. It only goes UP about an inch but Doesnt slide open after it goes up.
#3) Bose Factory cd player makes a continuous loud hum when power is on. I pressed power on the reciever and it makes a loud hum througout all the speakers. When I press cd, radio, or tape it still makes the sound. The hum doesnt get louder when I turn the volume up, but I can hear the radio lightly when the volume is all the way up.
#4) Click sound from the rear, I only heard it one time during the whole test drive. The last owner says it is the rear struts. He had them replaced and it still didnt fix the sound. He says he cant get rid of the random click sound.
Please reply with help. I have no experience with J30's like you guys do. What do you think the problem is and how much could it cost to replace/fix it. If it is simple enough, I will do the repairs myself to save $....
One of the known problems with this vehicle is the electrical system. The trunk and sunroof problems could be related to that. Whatever the problem is, you can count on it being expensive to repair. Remember, this is a luxury car. The components are not cheap. Also, the Bose stereo on all J30's tend to go bad. To fix the problem you'll need to remove the unit and send it to an authorized Bose repair facility. You can find one at www.boserepair.com. My unit is with them as we speak. Not sure what the click sound is. It could be a bad bushing allowing metal to metal contact. If you want my opinion, I recommend that you pass on this car. The problems you see could only be the tip of the iceberg. There is a reason this vehicle is selling for so little. If your budget is limited, I suggest you get a Honda or Toyota.
Well, Ive looked at many '93 J30's here in my area, driven many of them. This one has steering like butter, no rust, and it is the smoothest, quietest, and cleanest, of all of them. It also has average miles (98,800) for a '93 (considering 12k mi p/yr). The other '93 in this area have 120k+ miles and they want 6k-7k. And with this vehicle, Ive met the previous owner, have all service records, manual, clear carfax report, so Im looking at this as a good investment for a first car. Ive spoken with a boserepair.com tech and he said that the problem is a power relay thing that has to be replaced in every nissan/infinity car every 3-4 years. Cost about $50. And I can probably fix the sunroof myself with a repair kit. And the solenoid I will purchase off ebay and install myself.
The reason it is low priced is not because it has problems, it is because I was going to buy the car from the previous owner directly before he traded it, and the owner told the dealer that. So the dealer convinced that guy to trade it and they will sell it to me for $500 over what they gave for trade value, so that way it relieves and covers the previous owner in taxes, future problems, etc. My dad has been in the auto industry for 25+ years. He says its a great car as well. I looked at toyotas and hondas acuras, and they are ok, but they dont impress me like a J30 does at that price (and all the other teens in my area have those crappy wannabe race import hondas and toyotas with the fake xenon bulbs, hahaha, and I WANT TO BE DIFFERENT AND ORIGINAL. Im looking to spend as little as possible because I intend on adding 18" chrome wheels ($1500) and low profile tires ($500) and maybe lower the car an inch or two ($200). and have it repainted with 3 base coats of black, 3 clear coats, and 3 bake process ($900+), and add a infinity powered subwoofer to the existing bose system ($250).
I've got a 97 J30 with 54,000 miles, had it for a year and love it. Question...is it really necessary to use the premium unleaded or could the "middle" grade be ok? I've gotten mixed review on this. Thanks.
I have a 94 J with 52,000 miles on it. I really enjoy it as well. The manufacturer has specifically stated that unleaded premium gas is required for the car. I know there's always the thought that they are being overly cautious and you could probably get by with a lower octane fuel. But why would you want to risk damaging your engine to save about $1.50 per tank? You might be spending on average (depending on how much you drive) $80 - $100 per year more for fuel. A new engine is just a little more costly. Don't be penny wise and pound foolish. If you love your car treat it right. Give it the proper fuel. Good Driving!
I've had many cars in the last 45 years, and my 93 Infiniti J30 is one of my all time favorites. I'm an industrial designer and I know 4 other prominant designers that have the same car. I think it's a classic design, and will go down as one of the all time greats. I've had very few problems with mine, and it looks as good today as it did 8 years ago. It was a groundbreaking design when it was introduced, and it still turns heads today. I've added 17" Enki wheels and low profile tires to mine which only improve the appearance. The handling and performance is outstanding. I love this car, and I plan to keep it for a long time!
A guy that i work with has a BMW 325i and another guy drives a 300M. Both are nice cars and newer than my 95 J30t, but when we all go to lunch in my car they just rave about the ride. It just goes to show you how timeless the j is. i wish the back had more leg room. That is the only thing that i would change about it.
to Janimac and all other J30 owners... YES YES YES!!!! PREMIUM!!!!! A "friend" tried midgrade...blew a sensor (O2 I think) and the dealer did NOT cover it under the extended warranty. Remember your behind an engine built for the Nissan 300Z, high performance, great power, even scares some drivers that don't know what I have under the hood. A small cost to pay for all this Luxury and Fun...Good Luck!!!
Every time I fill up the J I cringe. But I remember that this car was 35 to 40K new. If you cant afford to but gas in it you should not have goten it. I think the J does 0-60 in 8 sec. But it feels much faster. I would not want to hurt it with cheaper gas.
I have a '94 J30 with 52,000 miles on it. I purchased it about a month ago. I truly like the car a lot. However, there is one thing that is really bugging me. Between 30 and 40 mph and again between 60 and 70 mph the drive train makes a loud, annoying "moaning" noise. It is most pronounced when de-cellerating between 30 and 40 mph. The noise is a low-pitched howling noise that seems to be in sync with the speed of the car. But only between the speeds I mentioned.
Its not random. It does it every time. I don't mind the sound of the engine noise (throaty) when you really step on the gas. But this noise is very distracting. There is no discernible vibration, and the car runs perfectly. Does anyone have an idea what this is? Is this common to the J30? Is it a design flaw or can it be corrected? Also, does this have anything to do with the Harmonic Balance problem I've heard about? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
I'm considering buying a 95 J30t with hail damage. The hood needs to be replaced and the roofline has some hail damage as well. Any opinions on whether to buy a hail-damaged J? I think I can get it for about $7500--it has 55k miles and is flawless on the inside. I've read all the previous messages and I'm really impressed with the car--I just don't know whether to spend this kinda money on a hail-damaged J. Any thoughts on what a new hood costs? Please let me know. Thanks in advance for your advice.
This is a common problem periodically with J30's. Your doorlock timer sensor is bad. You'll need to have it replaced. I have had to do this with my '94.
I just bought a 97 J30 with 36000 miles for a great price. What a beautiful car! I love the ride and handling. It truly has a refined luxury feel to it. I am currently in the process of shopping around for an after market warranty, since the manufacturer warranty just expired. I plan on putting 17" wheels and new tires on it after a year or so. Any info/suggestions on wheels and or warranties appreciated.
Congrats on your purchase! I recently bought a low mileage '94. I checked around pretty thoroughly and found that Warranty Gold had a very nice bumper-to-bumper "Diamond" plan service warranty that covers nearly everything on the car. The price compared favorably to other plans, and they have been given some very positive comments on another board here at Edmunds. I haven't had any claims as yet. But, based on my research, I would recommend them. You can obtain a free quote at www.warrantygold.com. There are other online warranty companies. You can find many of their names at the following website: www.warrantyreview.com. Mike Ames
I have always liked the looks of the J30 and found it to be quite unlike all those other derivitive cars, even looking fresh and timeless today.
I have been boning up on my knowledge of the car, reading all the posts here, checking reliability ratings on the net, and trying to get all the information I can. I'll be in a position where I can finally get one and I want to know if there's anything I should look for when I buy and any major things that may go wrong after I own it. I am considering only the 1995 and 1996 model year. Any help or comments, links, whatever, would be GREATLY appreciated.
Don't rule out a low mileage '94. The '94 was the first year with the 105,000 timing belt and heated seats. As far as exterior/interior and drive train, they're all the same. Except the '93 had a 60,000 timing belt change and no heated seats. One important thing to look for is a harmonic balance problem. The J30 has a two piece differential. In some cars there is a vibration from this. If the car you test drive has this vibration (its in the drive train area) I suggest you pass on it. The problem is not correctable. If there is no vibration problem, then go for it. Some of the other things that are commonly found as problems with the J30 are not real major, just annoyances. Good Luck
I thought about ruling in 1994 but thought if I were to go with an aftermarket, Internet warranty, then it would be hard to get one. I don't know. I haven't really checked that yet. I ruled out 1993 completely because of the timing belt deal and because you got heated seats in all the other years and then got the 6 speaker Bose system. But I'll include '94, if I see something special!
Now, I need to play a little "What if?" What if the car is coming close to that 105,000 mile mark; how much does it cost to replace a timing belt? What if the car does start to vibrate like a cheap motel bed; what does that signify in the long run? I call myself a car man but it's the little things you have to watch out for. LOL
And since I'm on the subject of questions (sorry!), I have one regarding those HID and faux HID headlights. I was thinking that once I got my J30 I would like to jazz it up a bit with those faux HID headlights, giving it that white/bluish tint that the new Q45 has (about the only thing I'd do to the car because I want it virtually untouched by aftermarket crapola; some people just get stupid with aftermarket stuff, ruining some cars which don't need the add-ons, i.e. the J30).I plan on trying some of the ones advertised on Ebay.
Has anyone used these or the real ones? Are the headlamps on the J30 suitable for this?
I recently purchased a '94 J30 with 51,000 miles on it. You can probably get one for about 10,500 from a private party or 11.5 - 12.0 at a dealer. I also bought a 36,000/3yr "diamond" extended warranty from Warranty Gold. This covers nearly everything on the car, with a few exceptions and a $50 deductible. There are plenty of warranties available to you for a 94 or higher as long as the mileage is below 100k. BTW, I wouldn't recommend buying a J with nearly 105K miles on it. Look around and get one with lower miles. You won't regret it.
Hey there! Thought it was 95+ with the 105K timing belt.... If not sorry... As far as after market lights.. don't bother... I tried them and did NOT like them at all. Someday I'll own a Q with the real thing. I own a 96 bordeaux red (deep maroon), with 70K miles and just put a new set of BFB Goodrich tires on... What a difference! actually smoother than what my J was. Question: Does anyone know where I can find a key like the original platinum that came with the car? I need a spare but would like to have the original style key. Thanks!!!!
Dames, I wouldn't buy a J with 105 thousand miles either. I may buy private party but I'm also thinking of going thourgh this brokerage place in town that sells cars at wholesale or can get you the exact car you want. They happen to be online too (www.autobrokersonline.com, I believe). At one point, they had a '95 Touring J30 for $10.9 and it only had 78 thousand miles. So, I may go through them.
Tex, I read all the posts and I must say that the Bordeaux Red is my favorite color, next to Champagne Gold. Whoo-hoo! Hot stuff! But what I cannot see is you trading in your J30 for a new Q45.
That car lacks something, like the new DeVille, don't quite know what it is. Maybe it's a little too progressive looking, not quite preserving its luxury stance. The '97 to '01 Q45 was an extremely elegant vehicle; I downright loved the way that car looked. Before the redesign in '97, I'd have taken an LS400 over it. But when they redid it for '97, it was stunning, with 10 times more sex appeal and more luxury elegance than the LS400. The only thing I did not like was the decreasing of the engine size and horsepower.
They did away with the J30 after '97 and so didn't have time to screw up it's looks. Maybe that isn't such a bad thing.
I guess I'll save the faux HID for my friend who just purchased a Millenia. Has anyone put any aftermarket wood trim in their car? I've been looking on the net at different places that sell it and found some places that use walnut that matches the walnut in the car. I saw at Ebay Motors where the aftermarket wood thing went horribly wrong! Someone put what seemed to be birch trim inside! That color wood looks like s**t in the J.
I put an after market wood kit in my '94 with tan leather interior. I ordered it from Joshua Tree. They're on the net. I ordered the factory match wood kit. The company assured me that if it didn't match, they would take it back and waive the re stocking fee. When I got the wood kit, it matched perfectly. I was truly amazed, since this is real wood. Unfortunately, two of the pieces had defects that were definitely noticeable. I ordered another kit and it was 5 shades darker than the factory color.
After much haggling, the factory agreed to remanufacture the two bad pieces and attempt to match the color of the first kit. Well, this finally worked out OK. I used the other pieces from the first kit and the two new pieces from the remake. It took 6 weeks to accomplish all this. But, it looks great. Everything matches extremely well. The guy at Joshua Tree is just a re-seller. He orders it from a company that makes them in Mexico and drop ships them to his customers. One thing to make sure of is that if you purchase a wood kit from any of the on-line companies that you get a guarantee that it will match the factory color. Good Luck.
Do you have a site, Dames, with pics of your car? Does the kit compliment the car or overwhelm it? I suppose that is a dumb question; you own a J30 so you have some taste.
No Web site with or without pics. The full kit contains a few pieces I didn't use. I didn't need to use the pieces that were already in the car, and there's a piece that immediately surrounds the shifter. It fits under the shifter surround. It is fitted over the shifter itself. After installing wood on the shifter surround and the cup holder lid, the piece immediately surrounding the sifter was definite overkill. The piece that goes around the beautiful clock is incredible. All the other pieces are very tasteful. It dresses up the car without being ostentatious. This has made the interior a real beautiful place.
I wen to Joshua Tree and saw their offerings. It seemed like a fairly stand up place; and their prices seem to be in keeping with most sites, if not a little higher. I also saw one or two sites, can't remember which, that had some factory matched pieces. But alot of the sites on the Net seem to be subsidiaries, more like fronts, for other bigger sites.
I have noticed that with some of these kits overkill is standard. LOL I would never use them all either, especially not to cover up wood that si already in the car! And the clock piece with the two vents on the side, that just cries out for some wood. I can't wait to finally get my own J. :-)
Was trying to buy an extended warranty from Warranty Gold but if you're J has 70K mile they won't do it... My J just hit 70K last week so I'm searching for another company. Bscblue: Love the bordeaux but shows all scratches and pits, Drives me crazy!!! I'm using GS20 and the scratches disappear. The pearl white color is one of my favorites. I was in Orlando and saw several J's with that dark blue color that I've never seen here in Texas. What color is yours? Thanks for the spelling correction Pat!!!
Oh, Pat. I'm sure they all noticed. I noticed the first time I came to the Town Hall and looked in the J30 section. I'm just wondering why no one said anything sooner.
Tex, I'm just in the market. I'm looking for the perfect J. I've seen some and have been trying to find a good deal and a good car. I'm patient though. I have studied EVERYTHING about the car. Even drove a co-worker's J. I am becoming ultra-prepared for ownership. LOL
I was wondering, what is GS20?I have a purl white 95 J30t with the gold emplims, and I have a few scratches on it that I would like to get out. I tried going to the dealer for touch up paint, The guy said not to bother because it was a 3 step process that never works on the purl white.
I purchased my J 2 years ago from Carmax, Its a great place to shop for J's They may have 5 to 10 on some days. I purchased mine for about $2,000 under blue book. Check out the web site its worth a look. (carmax.com)

I saw at Ebay Motors where the aftermarket wood thing went horribly wrong! Someone put what seemed to be birch trim inside! That color wood looks like s**t in the J.
Good Luck.
I have noticed that with some of these kits overkill is standard. LOL I would never use them all either, especially not to cover up wood that si already in the car! And the clock piece with the two vents on the side, that just cries out for some wood. I can't wait to finally get my own J. :-)

Tex, I'm just in the market. I'm looking for the perfect J. I've seen some and have been trying to find a good deal and a good car. I'm patient though. I have studied EVERYTHING about the car. Even drove a co-worker's J. I am becoming ultra-prepared for ownership. LOL
