I see that many newer models have experienced problems with their updated navigator. Is there anyone out there who has replaced theirs on a 2001 and if so, what have your results been? Thank you.
I own a 2007 Odyssey EX-L with dvd and navigation. Well from the very beginning the navigation sucked. It does "ok" with long distance directions. But since I'm not a traveling salesman, a lot of good that does me. Good luck finding points of interest (POI). I thought updating the disc would alleviate the problems. NOT!!!!! I received my new disc ver. 4.73A about 2 weeks ago! Nothing has changed!!!!! I live in a major city in NC, and if I put in Walmart, it will give me one in Massachusetts or Tennessee! For some reason these two states seem to be really popular with my GPS system. I mean there are like 5 Walmart stores within a 20 mile radius!! I put in Dillards Department store, and it gave one in a city 200 miles away! The other day, I put in TJ Maxx, and it gave me one in Virginia. I am so sick of it. I have been reading all these posts, and glad to know that I am not alone, but am angry to know that Honda/Alpine is not doing anything to fix this mess. If you are thinking about getting a new disc, save your money. They are no different!!! I am going to send mine back for a refund. We all need to complain to Honda. They cannot just sit back and do nothing. There needs to be a recall. Built in navigation does not come cheap. Has anyone heard anything as of late, or gotten any good contact information for either Alpine or Honda? I would appreciate it!
I have a 2007 Odyssey EXL with navigation and have complained from the first day about the navigation system... to the extent that one or two people on here have told me to give it a rest. Of course, those people obviously are either rich or own Honda/Alpine stock because they tend to think complaints should not be made.
My nav system sucks to high heaven and the lowest hades, and Honda nor Alpine will willingly address the issue so I am going to let my state's lemon law handle it when the extended warranty expires! Basically, that's three unresolved visits to any dealer for the same problem and Honda has to take back the vehicle. I am glad to hear that a disc update does not solve the problem, at least!! I will not spend the money based on your comments. Honda just says everything is fine from the dealer all the way to the national office in California. Alpine does not even answer letters or phone messages.
Part of the so-called problem is I live in a rural area and Honda says the maps have not been updated. That sucks because the Lewis & Clark Expedition mapped not only Kentucky but Ohio and Missouri and Indiana 200 years ago or so, and by now, Honda and Alpine should have gotten on board.
I will give the system this much -- after I go somewhere and enter that location into the unit, things are basically ok. You're just going to have to figure out how to get there first so you can tell Honda where you want to go.
I guess if I owned Alpine or Honda stock, I wouldn't complain. Or if I had so much money that it did not matter, I also probably wouldn't complain. As it is, I paid over $2,200 for something that is unreliable, doesn't work correctly, but sure does make a nice-loking cover or front piece for the CD player.
I have never been overly happy with the NAV as well. The POI's are relatively few and some of the mapping is questionable. However, it generally gets the job done. Not nearly as good as a $200 Garmin but the Garmin lacks the integration so, [non-permissible content removed]-for-tat.
It sounds like your biggest complaint is the way it searches for POI's. I had problems with this at first as well and it turns out, it's operator error. The system is not intuitive though, which is why you're getting stores 200 miles away.
This "problem" has to do with the order in which you select different menus. Try this from the main nav menu: search places, shopping, sort by distance to travel or city vacinity, then input name. If you just search by name it pulls "Dillards" out of its [non-permissible content removed].
Another problem can be with how the names are in the system. A lot of times I'll do a city vicinity search and just type in the first letter and then hit list. You'll have to scroll through everything in that category that starts with a that letter.
What's really sad is that of the OEM systems I've owned, this one is actually the best. The system in my wife's Lexus is horrible even for my technical brain. She refuses to use it and has a Garmin mounted to the windshield. The Lexus also has a lot of limitations to features when the vehicle is in motion.
Thank you for posting the details to this update deal. I lost the postcard I received in the mail.
I've been putting off buying an update for quite a while. One time I came very close; but stopped cold when I read about a bug that prevented the system from letting you listen to the male voice. The female has a grating voice to me.
I'm now glad I waited though. It looks like they've added quite a few features and locations that I care about. I still have the original 2004 disc from when I bought my 2005 Odyssey. Hopefully they've improved the POI's for where I live (Riverside, CA); because this area was all orange groves at the time my DVD data was created.
I feel bad for all of you who are having issues with the navigation system. I have tried a handful of GPS units, both built-ins and portables. None have come close to the features that are offered to me on my built-in Honda Navi. I've tried Land Rover, Toyota, BMW and Ford built-ins and they are all less intuitive and did not allow for any input while driving over 10 mph. I've tried a couple megellan and garmen units and have never been quite happy with their ability to give easy access to the options I care about and have consistently taken me off the freeway just to get back on it a couple miles down the road because it's a shorter distance.
The main trick for the Honda navi (and I saw someone else mention this) is to select the options in the right order. If you want to get all of the closest Walmart's to your current location, you push Menu, Places, Shopping, then top selection but I forget the wording (something like Search Nearest), then select By Name. If you select By Name after pushing the Shopping button, you get a pretty irrelevant listing of stores from anywhere and everywhere.
Anyway, this is turning into a long post and I really just wanted to thank ocuihs for posting a link to purchase the discounted map/poi update DVD. Thanks!
I moved to Canada, and apparently Columbus was wrong. The world must be flat and ends at the US border according to my navi. From my searching today, it would seem that Honda has not bothered to make an update for the 2001 (black disc) navi that includes Canada. Somebody please tell me I am wrong, or that there is a hack for the white disc to make it work in my 2001, or, or... is it just a losing battle? :confuse:
2001 (version 2.60 - black disc) can be upgraded to version 4.73 white dvd (USA south dvd) where it will covered about 100 miles/160 km NORTH of the USA border.
If you need additional North Canada coverage, you may purchase Canada DVD (gray disc).
Oh Oh Oh Ody - I drove up to San Francisco with my eldest child last weekend. He was moving me there - and half way up the Coast emy GPS said "door open blah blah blah" The kid is cute and talented but no tech wizard. I've been googling, reading my "War and Peace" owners manual and basically learning new curse words for a week. Then I found you! I haven't even tried this yet but the mere fact that I learned where the darn thing is located "under the seat" has made me happier than a brand new pair of Christian Louboutin shoes -
I own a 2002 Odyssey and I am using a Garmin 250 {speaks directions but not street names}. It is handling both the USA & Canada very well. If ever I buy my next Odyssey I will not take the navigation option but just use a Garmin that speaks.street names, Garmin map updates are easy via your computer. I keep it on the tray between the seats on a 'Garmin tree'. Window and windowsill mounts are outlawed in Ontario, Canada. A Canadian
My 2009 Accord navigation system can't find my home. It can find the pre 911 address which was good about 15 years ago.
It CAN NOTgive directions from/to any street that is not a State of US highway. You are on your own in the middle of a city except for a dotted line that shows the straight line direction. There IS NOT audible NOR visual directions to a point that is not on a State or US highway.
I drive around with a TomTom sitting in front of the very expensive Nav system.
Where is the customer outrage??????? or any HONDA concern?????
I believe there is a way to allow the system to route you on "unverified" routes. I had to change that setting early on as well. Yes, the POI's are lacking and the routing is questionable. My Garmin does a far better job. But the integration is top-notch and as sad as it is...the Honda system is still better than many other OEM's I've used. My wife's Lexus system is even more frustrating and lacking. I usually bring the Garmin along as back up.
I feel for you, man!! I own a 2007 Odyssey that we love in every possible facet except the nav system which does not measure up to a $200 over-the-television sales pitches. I have been castigated and ridiculed on this site for my complaints in the past but I don't worry about other people because I have an out -- first, an extended warranty that is a long way from being used, and a state lemon law for the life of the warranty.
Since my original complaints, I have visited a couple of very large cities and the Honda unit works fine there. But, take it to the rest of the world and you're on your own, plain and simple. I don't care a whit about the integration that everybody talks about. The nav system is inferior and was from the get-go. There is no customer outrage and you can forget about Honda concern. I have talked with Honda national on a couple of occasions and all I get is a story about how Alpine made the system and how it's a little short on some aspects of updates and so on, but no one is willing to go the mat and get Honda to fix these things. If you write Alpine, you'll get no reply.
In short, Honda is done with you when you give them the money or send in the payments regularly. And I have owned more Honda cars than this one so I know a little about the usual practices of Honda customer service. It's usually top-drawer -- but when you have a legitimate complaint about which they are doing nothing, you get shut out in the cold. Again, though, an extended warranty is going to change that one day!!!
If I take any sizable trip today, I program the Honda and I also make absolutely certain to take my QVC Cobra with me for backup. Am I ticked off? You bet!! But it looks like you and I are about the only ones willing to tell Honda the bare truth -- the thing just don't cut the mustard for the average customer who lives somewhere other than in a major, major metropolitan area.
We just purchased an 06 Odyssey Tourning and I believe the DVD in the navagation system is still the original. I know I can get a new update for a couple of hundred bucks from Honda but are there reliable sources for used ones out there? If so what do they usually go for?
I've never found an aftermarket option for the DVD. I've also never found enough improvements to the OEM DVD to warranty the cash to upgrade. I was checking out an '09 not too long ago and it was still missing some common POI's and also a major road that's been there for 6+ years.
System is repeatedly locking us out and requiring the entry of the 4 digit code in order to proceed. Battery not disconnected or in need of a charge. Anything else known to cause this? Thanks
We just purchased an '08 EX-L w/o Navigation and would like to buy a Kenwood or Pioneer system for Nav / Bluetooth and backup camera all in one. My question: is there any navigation system that will fit into the dash and look like it was factory installed? i dont want a big screen on my dash. Please suggest. :shades:
You wrote: "This "problem" has to do with the order in which you select different menus. I tried this with my 2005 Honda Odyssey and the "sort by distance" or similar option was not there at this point of the process. Anyone with a 2005 Odyssey get this to work? Does the newer DVD work like this?
Now if I already have a route in, I can do a search by vicinity, but just looking for a Blockbuster video is ridiculous.
Ok, I just walked through mine again to make sure. Mine is an '05 with the oldest nav disc possible.
Menu, Places, Shopping, All Shopping, Input Place Name, Distance to Travel:typed in Dillards
Gave me a Dillards starting with the nearest (about 70 miles....are they still in business??) and then on from there.
One thing I have found though is the names of places are all over the place. I've searched "outback" for outback steakhouse...and some were "out back steakhouse" and others were "the outback steakhouse". But yes the Ody nav is pretty lame either way. Blackberry helps me find things and then I can put in the address to Ody nav and away we go. Usually.
I'm being transferred to Germany and am taking our 2007 w/Nav system with us. We're trying to get our hands on a DVD covering Europe. I know the current system only has the U.S. and most of Canada.
Anyone know of where to get a Europe DVD? Anyone every hear of the Alpine system being compatible with another company that might have a Europe DVD?
Hello sandsmurphy, I just shipped a 2009 Odyssey with Navigation (EX-L R&N) to Germany in June. I have never even driven it but I did mess with the Navi in the U.S. I have actually not yet seen a Navi Odyssey on any of the Army/AF bases here yet, though there are many of them driving around without Navi. It is not sold here, in fact I think the Odyssey is ONLY sold in NA. Also the AutoExchange dealer in Germany will not sell a Navi version even if you ask.
Once it gets here I plan to go straight to the German Honda dealer (Händler) here and find out about a German Navi DVD or if it might work. If you find a solution first please post it. Thanks
they do have handas in europe with navi, i thing as long as the navi disk is white that you get from a europe dealer it should work, hardwear is the same.
I have a 2006 with the original disc.I was going on a little trip and a friend had a 4.62 disc and loaned it to me out of his 2008.after loading it.It now says out of data base range. So I put my old disc in and now it says this disc is not compatible with new soft ware. Can anyone help me out Bruce
I have an 07 EX-L w/navi and the only place it's been confused is about 150 miles north of St. Paul, MN. It didn't recognize a couple of the secondary roads, wanting to take me miles out of the way to get where I wanted to go. Luckily I had a map (remember those?) otherwise would have tacked on an hour or so extra driving time.
Other than Minnesota, it's been absolutely reliable all the way from Chicago down to the Keys, back up through the east coast states, across Canada from Niagra Falls and out to rural Kansas. Maybe I should just be happy that mine works (for the most part). Honda should have plugged it into the engine sensors to do mpg, though. That was the only disappointment on my EX-L.
Every year when the new DVD hits, I stumble out to the dealer to check out an Ody with the new version. It has improvements, but I still find a lot of 5-10 year old roads missing....as well as tons of POI's that my $200 Garmin has. I've never been able to justify the cost for the DVD. It works pretty good, but I always have a map and even my Garmin on backup when going into unknown areas. Seems like a better plan than spending the money on their "updated" DVD. The Ody NAV works pretty good most of the time though, particularly when you have a good idea of where you're going.
I purchased the Honda over the Toyota primarily because of the navigation system! Can you believe that in a Toyota you can not input while driving above 10 miles per hour? My wife would not be able to do her job as navigator. A recent review in PC Magazine shows that in-car system require fewer repairs than the others. There have not been any new posts in a few weeks, and many negative posts. In the 3 months I have been playing with the Honda Navigation, I have read the manual cover to cover. So, I would like to hear some more tips about how to get the most out of the system that we are stuck with. I am a Magellan owner, sorry Garmin users, and love my Magellan. My Magellan always takes a long time to acquire satellites, and I have had to return it for replacement during the warranty. But, I love it, the database is great! The database in the Honda leaves a lot to be desired. And interestingly both get their information from Navteq! Go figure. So, I hope to generate some more discussion here, and see how we can help each other.
I've mainly started using my blackberry for POI searches and then just plug in the address to the Ody NAV. Works pretty good...but again I still usually glance at a map before relying on any of the GPS units for longer trips. They all do some goofy things. Not sure if you've tried this tip...but you can "fly" ahead/around your route using the pointer and see the route or other roads you might be interested in.
I own the 2009 Honda Accord with Nav system. Fortunately the Nav system is recessed into the dash which leaves a shelf area in front of it that is just perfect to hold my TomTom.
The Honda Nav system cannot find my home which has been here for 60 years. The TomTom cost about $600 3-4 years ago and is much better than the Honda system.
I've heard there's an aftermarket Alpine system that's very close to the Ody system in terms of integration/looks (the Honda NAV is built by Alpine). I've seen quotes of around $1,500 for that one. I recall someone on another site pricing all the parts, wiring harnesses, etc. to do the OEM install at somewhere around $4,000 (before labor if you can't do it yourself). Honda/dealers don't sell the factory nav as an add-on. But yes, anything is possible with deep enough pockets.
I BELIEVE THERE IS AN ALPINE NAVI THAT FITS IN THE DASH SINCE THE ONE ON THE ODYSSEY TOURING IS MADE BY ALPINE I SUJEST YOU DO A LITTLE SEARCH ON THIS TO MAKE SURE IT FITS.
The Pioneer is probably better than the OEM nav as well. My garmin beats the pants off the Honda system, but it's not as big of a screen and nicely integrated....I likely wouldn't buy the OEM nav again if I get a choice.
Save your money on the factory nav. I have a 2005 Odyssey and to upgrade it it is going to cost $265 form what Honda is telling me and I have to get it from Alpine. You are better off getting a Garmin or one of the other GPS systems. To upgrade those it is $70. Just my 2 cents.
I've seen some old discussion on this but haven't seen anything recently. I have an '09 Odyssey and am in the military. Just got to Germany and I'm trying to figure out how to get European disc(s) for the NAV system. Anybody got any ideas on this? Thanks.
I still have not solved the 09 Ody Navigation issue here in Germany.
The Honda dealer here tells me that the German Hondas have a completely different system but the maps are still from NAVTEQ. That said, I am waiting for a discounted 2009 upgrade disc to come out for the Euro market on ebay.de, ebay.co.uk, etc. As far as I know any disc older than 2009 will not work, but I don't want to waste 300 euros to find out.
The second problem.. once you HAVE the 2009 disc for the euro market, it is region-coded for europe. The Honda Navi DVD drive under the seat (and the RES system by the way) are US region-coded (Region 1). So, once the Euro Navi DVD is in my hand, the first thing I plan to do is copy it onto a DVD-R/+R, code it as region 1, and pop it into the drive in the car. Who knows what will happen then??
Let me know if anybody has found a solution to this!! I am getting tired of driving around Germany with my TomTom sitting right next to my Navi screen on clock mode.
My 07 Odyssey's Navigation system will not switch to the black screen at night when programmed on the Auto setting. I can change it manually, but that a pain.
Anyone experiencing the same issue, or have suggestions to remedy the problem?
I think it's also tied to the dash light brightness (adj with the trip knob/button). If the dash lights are turned all the way up it has the daytime nav screen. I recall having some issues with this at first as well. The trick was to turn the dash lights one notch off the brightest setting.
I have a 2000 Odyssey and the Nav system sometimes does not want to work. It give me a error message stating that the door is open or the dvd needs to be formatted or there is no dvd.
Hi Bryan and Vanguy11 I have the same problem with my 07 Ody that we took along to Germany. Can not get the Nav to work. Did someone contact Alpine Europe/Germany? Does anyone know how to make the RES region code free? Please email for further discussion: schunderfamily@t-online.de Thx!
I lived in Germany most of my life and was active in the expat community around Frankfurt. In the past few years I met several people who brought cars with them to Germany and several of them experienced the same problem you are having. Unfortunately, the region coding does seem to be one problem that has no solution I'm aware of. As you probably know, many DVD players can be "hacked" to be region free but the factory installed DVD systems, including Honda's, have no workable hack. The navigation system doesn't either.
You mentioned re-coding the disc on your computer but in my experience the navigation DVDs have security protection that prevents this.
By the way, I bought a 2009 Odyssey Touring when I arrived in the States and use the video-in jacks in the rear to plug in my portable DVD player (Medion brand bought in Germany) and we watch German DVDs. That doesn't help you much but at least I can sympathize!
Normally you need a remote control or at least front controls to hack a DVD player. The NAV system has none of this. While the discs may be security protected, there are several free utilities on the internet that get around the security protection. I'll probably just need to bite the bullet and buy a set of discs and try it. I found a place in England that can sell me the Region 2 discs. Haven't gotten back to me yet on the price.
I own a 05 Odysee. Tried to upgrade the Map data. Got disc reading error constantly. Took it to dealer. They could not do anything. They put the old sw back or so they thought. It does not work. Screen locks up. Route calculation does not work for long distances. I am being told that I need a new unit, which a lot of bull. Honda wont help. It just is not worth it with so many nice GPS units out there. Do not waste your money on GPS unit, especially by Honda.
I wanted to know if other people have the same observations as I do regarding this vehicle.
Recently I visited a local dealer to look at and test drive the Honda Odyssey. After the visit I have several questions.
1. The digital clock. I found the clock difficult to read during the daytime. Reflections and its location way over on the passenger side of the dash and lack of contrast, made it virtually unreadable. Is it backlit during hours of darkness? Does anyone else have trouble reading the clock?
2. Electrical outlets. One in the front and one in the back! Could someone enlighten me as to to total lack of these items. There is one located on the lower front dash! The minivan that I drive now has 3 at this location.I use all 3 many times (my Iphone, her CD player and call phone.) How does one add more outlets at this location? And why the lack of additional oulets at this location? The 2nd row passengers have none! They either have to reach forward to access the front one or reach behind them to access the only one located at the 3rd row? Again, why the lack of these outlets? The 3rd row has only one outlet wat in the rear, driver side. My 2002 minivan has these outlets at numerous locations throughtout the vehicle. Why Honda reach the decision to offer only 2 in the entire vehicle baffles me. Children and adults nowadays use many different electrical devices requiring these type of eletrical outlets.
How do people get around this lack of outlets. I was told that one can purchase an accessory/adaptor that piggybacks into 2 or 3 outlets from a single one. Is this true? And what about the then need to run wires from the 2nd row passengers to either the front or rear locations? I see images of multiple strands of wires running throughout the vehicle.

Thanks
Bruce
Other than Minnesota, it's been absolutely reliable all the way from Chicago down to the Keys, back up through the east coast states, across Canada from Niagra Falls and out to rural Kansas. Maybe I should just be happy that mine works (for the most part). Honda should have plugged it into the engine sensors to do mpg, though. That was the only disappointment on my EX-L.
The Honda Nav system cannot find my home which has been here for 60 years. The TomTom cost about $600 3-4 years ago and is much better than the Honda system.
What a mistake the Honda purchase was.
Anyone experiencing the same issue, or have suggestions to remedy the problem?
Thanks
Any suggestions?
I have the same problem with my 07 Ody that we took along to Germany. Can not get the Nav to work. Did someone contact Alpine Europe/Germany?
Does anyone know how to make the RES region code free?
Please email for further discussion: schunderfamily@t-online.de
Thx!
Thanks in advance,
Steve
