What is wrong with Lexus? I went to my dealer hoping to buy an IS300 with Nav. and was told that they are not being delivered that way. The only way to get one is to order it, and wait 12 weeks. I'm on the East Coast, and the regional manager was at the dealership when I was there and he confirmed what I had been told. I guess I'll have to look at something else.

I have excellent credit. Does anybody know what lease prices should I be looking for. My other question is if the navigation is not touch screen where are the controls. Are they easily reachable or do you have to lean over?
  • kartahkartah Member Posts: 10
I believe the controls for the Nav is right behind the shifter, next to the hand brake.

The only thing that's bothering me and making me reluctant to buy the IS are the rear seats. They Don't fold down. All there is, is a Trunk pass through. Does anyone know if this "pass through" is big enough for a snowboard to go through?
  • nschulman3nschulman3 Member Posts: 125
I, too, was turned of by the fact that the rear seats didn't fold down on the IS. Fortunately, my wife liked the looks of the sportcross and we already have a wrx with a manual, so we bought the sportcross (whose seats DO fold down) and we thoroughly enjoy the car. If you really need fold down rear seats and don't want a manual, why not look at the sportcross. It is really the same car and IMO is better looking than the sedan. Of course, if you need a manual, then you are out of luck, since the sportcross is not available with a manual and the sedan does not have fold down rear seats.
  • jmessjmess Member Posts: 677
The SportCross won me over also. I use the fold down rear seats all the time. I can get my mountain bike in the back with the front wheel off. I just wrap it in a blanket and slide it in and out.

I love my IS300 but have been baffled by reoccuring noises I can't seem to duplicate for the dealership. The first was a sqeek in the drivers seat that will appear one day then disappear the next. It seems to be worse on rainy days. I informed the dealership but the only advice they had was to completely remove the seat then re install it...seems like a lot work when there could be an easier solution. The second is a rattle in the dash, again it doesn't occur everyday. If I put downward pressure on the dash with my hand it disappears. The last is a loud click or pop that will occur when I turn tightly into a parking spot. Sounds as if it is coming from the front ball joint or steering linkage. Has anyone else experienced similar noises.
  • jrct9454jrct9454 Member Posts: 2,363
...I think you'll find the dash noise to be pretty common, with the instrument binnacle being the prime suspect.

I got my 2002 Lexus (I don't know if any dealer still has them) for 42 months at $350 (including tax) with $3000 down (including tax, license, first month lease, bank fee).

It had everything except for the nav system.

oh, btw, I live in NJ, and don't know if the deal is applicable in other parts of the country.

As for baffling noises, I too am baffled. I love the car otherwise, but am reluctant to take the car in to fix rattling noises that I can neither locate or duplicate with any kind of consistency. The last time I dealt with rattling noises was with an 87 Nissan Pulsar, a sorry excuse of a car.

    My letter to Lexus

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Att:Soo Manai
    Re:2001 Lexus IS300 Paint Problems

    Dear Ms. Manai,
As per our discussion I have faxed to you a copy of the report by my detailer about the problems with the finish on my Lexus IS300. I have also enclosed a copy of a thread from IS300.net about this paint problem. There are literally 100’s of people that have posted about this problem. I would like you to note the post by is300soon, who had the exact same problem as my complaint, and who had his car replaced by Lexus. I am hoping to not have to go to the BBB with this complaint.
In my opinion I am driving a Lexus, not a Chevy. In the 2 years that I own this car, I have had 3 radios replaced, the dashboard replaced(damaged during the removal of the first radio), 4 rotors replaced for rusting(an item repaired in the 2002’s), 2 wheels replaced and 2 wheels repaired(Lexus told me they couldn’t be repaired, Wheels of America told me that Ralleye Lexus is their best customer), and all the tires recalled. This is in addition to constant complaints about the finish of the car. Besides the letter from my detailer that I have enclosed a copy of, I also had the car detailed by Penn Toyota when it was one year old. The Toyota dealer also told me to bring the car back to Lexus, that the finish is defective.
I find it amazing, that with the reputation Lexus has, that they refuse to do anything in the name of customer satisfaction. Elliot, the service manager at Ralleye Lexus, will not come to the phone for the last 6 months. He is always out of the office. Sheila, my service writer, has told me that she is stuck in the middle and must do what Elliot says .
I would like either the finish repaired, the car replaced, or the lease terminated. I am fed up with the response of Lexus, a company that supposedly prided itself on customer satisfaction. Please contact me at your earliest convenience.

We will do nothing, call the better business bureau. This from their main office.
  • superman5superman5 Member Posts: 154
can you post the the letter from main office? instead of your "non-bios" words "We will do nothing, call the better business bureau. This from their main office." I want to see exactly how they responded. On the side note, lexus do use soft paint but I've heard other car makers do also since these new paints are environmentally friendly so at least we are doing something for our children I don't really mind.
  • superman5superman5 Member Posts: 154
my IS300 is about to hit 1 year, so far no problem at all. I love my nav and my nice stereo. Handling on this car is simply awesome.
  • softhds1softhds1 Member Posts: 26
Nothing to post since they didnt even respond in writing. She called me on the phone and told me they will do nothing.
  • superman5superman5 Member Posts: 154
hard to believe but good luck with your car/problem =/ happy IS'ing
  • softhds1softhds1 Member Posts: 26
Why do you find it hard to believe? The BBB is now investigating my complaints, until now everything was fixed under warranty, but the finish on the car is awfull, even my service writer said so.

i was on the lexus site and saw 18/25 (city/highway) was listed for the sportscross. has anyone gotten better mileage than this? does anyone know why the mileage isn't as good as the reported gas mileage for the es300? (just as an example)

    thanks!!
  • jrct9454jrct9454 Member Posts: 2,363
The answer to the latter question is gearing. The IS has a much shorter final drive and tighter gearing overall than the ES. I'm unconvinced that this is completely necessary to give the car the punch it needs, and in particular, think a longer 5th gear would be a better choice, but no one at Toyota asked me.

Translation: the engine in the IS is noticeably busier at any given speed than the ES.
  • jmessjmess Member Posts: 677
Gearing for sure with the IS and I think it is a little heavier also. I have had an ES service loaner and it was a real yawner compared to the IS. It could get 40MPG and I wouldn't want one for my daily driver. The IS is far more entertaining car to drive.

I seldom check MPG any more but I would see the high teens in town with very short freeway hops. I was surprised to see 22 one time on a 240 mile road trip where I was driving the car pretty quickly; I expected to be in the teens based upon how hard I had been pushing on the pedal.

For me, after I drove my SportCross the MPG rating really wasn't a big concern. I have found the total package on a daily basis to be worth a few extra bucks at the pump. I have also found that I spend less on gas than I did with my former Tundra Pickup. Nice truck but you were still driving a truck after you filled up the gas tank. So depending on what vehicle you are jumping from the impact on your wallet may vary.

I never been to any long trip. With 20 miles to work (~70 % highway factored with traffic), the best is 21+, most of time is 19 - 20. None of the cars I owned ever achieved the max stated on the sticker. Different engine definitely related, my previous accord v6 has a little less power but get a little better mileage. Best mileage in my experience is 37 (civic hatchback), worst one burned 1/8 tank in 5 minutes idle - ancient pickup of my friend.

Any 2002 IS300s left still? How are the deals now with leases?
  • jmessjmess Member Posts: 677
If you find an 02 I would imagine they would be wanting to move it. You would have to check out the dealers in your area to see what is available. I don't think there was much of a price increase for 03 so in the long run you might be better off with an 03. I would think that with a little patience you should be able to get some where between 0-$1000 over invoice on an 03. I think it depends on the area your are in and how many cars they have on the lots.

Posted: Wed Oct 30, 2002 7:22 pm Post subject: Lexus Of Mission Viejo-Tried to burn me....but I caught them

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sat. 10-26-02 bought 03 - IS 300. I cut a check for $34,702 out the door. Wanted Lexus of Mission Viejo to install gold lettering-chrome wheels--spoiler. Called on Mon. to find out if dealer installed equip. was done. Got bad feeling from salesman. Went to check on car Mon. night and was told gold lettering was not in stock. Was also told there was some slight damage to car that they were in the process of fixing. I asked to see the car and after that cancelled the deal. The dealer -Lexus Of Mission Viejo- was trying to get the car into the body shop to do the repair before I found out about it and then sell me the car as new. These idiots are not to be trusted. They play like they are a cut above the rest but this experience showed me they are at the bottom of the heap. Don't go to Lexus of Mission Viejo...
  • hkyhky Member Posts: 71
What's their attitude like when you back out the deal? Two years ago, I went to an vw dealer, they tried talk me into buying their hail damaged passat and the fleet manager boldly stated "I could have sell you the car without telling you it has been hail damaged!" - the best they can do is giving a discount which I can easily get from another dealer without any damage.
  • iiceiiicei Member Posts: 3
After they had to tell me about the damage and I saw it for myself I asked them just when they were going to tell me about the damage. They just looked blankly at me and had no answer...Lexus acts like customer service is important to them....DON'T BELIEVE THEM...THEY'RE OUT TO SCAM US LIKE ALL THE OTHER CAR DEALERS OUT THERE.
  • jmessjmess Member Posts: 677
You should contact Lexus customer service and report the unethical behavior of the people you were dealing with. While I can understand your anger, you can't really say that Lexus condones this type of behavior. It appears some people working at the dealership have some business ethics problems. By reporting it to Lexus Corp you give them a chance to deal with the perpetrators.
  • iiceiiicei Member Posts: 3
I called Lexus Corporate on Wed. morning and told the whole story to customer assistance. They informed me that each Lexus Dealership is privately owned however they were concerned that dealers should conduct business properly. It was all-"so sorry to hear about that" and then she offered me a Lexus T-shirt. Haven't heard anything from them since then.
  • jmessjmess Member Posts: 677
You can always try and go a little higher up the food chain. Your right, each dealer is an independent. They spend millions on lobbying to keep it that way. Many of the car MFGs would love to own their dealers but there are a whole bunch of laws that prevent them from doing it.

One time I had a really nasty experience with an alarm company - I fedex-ed a letter to the corporate ceo (required signature) and also filed a complaint to a federal agency regulating them. Two days later the local company president called and fully apologized and resolved all the issues without any question. Hope you can find another good dealer somewhere.

is tire rotation a must? i did tire rotation for 5k and 10k but for 15k i just did oil change but no tire rotation, is it a must or may be skipped?
i look at 15k service list, it was exact same as 5k but few more check ups but nothing more , i decided to do oil change only at a local shop. $200 vs $20 bucks. does everyone does oil change only or full/major/minor services all the time?
  • jmessjmess Member Posts: 677
Rotation is supposed to prolong tire wear but it isn't mandatory.

I change my own oil; the IS isn't the easiest car to do an oil change, but it isn't hard either. I have always handled service via the alacart method; just pay for what I can't or don't want to do myself. I also use the 7500 mile intervals.

for lexus, when do the new models usually come out? does anyone know of any changes there may be to the sedan/sportscross? thanks!
  • jmessjmess Member Posts: 677
The 03s have arrived at the dealers. Not any significant changes over the 02s.
  • paulfromdcpaulfromdc Member Posts: 1
Can those listed prices be correct? The Edmunds list price for a 2001 is more than for the 2002.

Also, I find it tough to belive the avg retail price for an IS 300 is now 24k.

    Paul
  • jmessjmess Member Posts: 677
There was a significant price reduction around Feb02. MSRP for my SportCross went down around $3K; most of it was in the option package pricing. It appears that the Edmund's price is about $500 lower than that for a similarly equipped 03.

Does anyone know if there is a "break-in" period for the IS? I mean from the moment you drive out the dealership, is there a period of X amount of miles should be driven before the engine is considered ready? I know that some new cars you're suppose to drive it 1000 miles first before being able to drive up to a certain speed, does that apply to the IS at all?

    Thanks for any info.
  • jmessjmess Member Posts: 677
The engine was ran in at the factory as part of their quality control.

The breakin period is more for the gearbox and rear
differential. Taking it easy for 300-500 miles will give all the parts a chance to get to know each other. I focused mainly on not doing full throttle loads on the drive train and varying the speed when on the highway.

The engine is so smooth that I found it pretty much impossible to drive the IS below 55 for 1000 miles as recommended in the manual.

A journalist with a major newspaper wants to talk with consumers who've bought entry-lux cars (e.g. BMW 3, Mercedes c-coupe, Jag X-type, Audi a4, etc) in the last year, ideally buyers who were new to the luxury brands, to talk about how they like their cars and why they bought them. Please respond asap by Wednesday, December 4 to jfallon@edmunds.com with the type of vehicle and approximate amount you paid for it. Thanks!

I'm very interested in the IS300 and have narrowed my search to either the IS or a G35. Either way, I'm going with a manual, but have reservations about the IS because it doesn't come with stability control. Those high-performance tires are awesome for dry conditions, but scare me in wet or light snow conditions. Even if I switch to all-seasons, I still would greatly prefer stability control. Why did Lexus remove this great safety feature for the manual??? Will it possibly be offered on the 5-speed in the future? I hope so, otherwise the IS is off my short list.
  • jrct9454jrct9454 Member Posts: 2,363
...it's my opinion that the G35 wins on just about every level. You're focusing on one reason, but there are a lot more - better ride, more room, better pricing structure, actually usable trunk space, etc.

The wild card is dealer proximity to where you live - Infiniti dealer coverage can be spotty in some areas of the country, even more so than Lexus. That aside, I would go with the G35 without hesitation.
  • absolutelyred1absolutelyred1 Member Posts: 3
but what did Infinity do to the rear end? Ugh.
I still get a smile on my face when I see my IS in the garage. It's more of an emotional decision for many of us, don't really care about the comparison stats. They provide information only to a certain point.
Love the way the IS drives, love the manual shift, the way it absolutely hugs tight to the road on curves, great brakes, more than sufficient HP. It's pure fun. As far as I'm concerned, my IS is a definite keeper.

IMHO after spending a year with VSC on my SportCross I would like the car a little more without VSC. It cuts in too early for me. I go into a corner and I know the rear end is going to rotate and I am already counter steering and the bloody VSC buzzer goes off and the bloody computer tries to straighten out the car screwing up my corner exit. Thanks but no thanks, I am perfectly capable of doing it myself. My car has the E-shift, with a 5 speed the VSC would be even more intrusive because you can get more power down in the corners. I wouldn't hesitate to buy an IS without VSC. I would however never buy a Sports Sedan without a limited slip. Don't be fooled by traction control it doesn't even come close to the real thing. The only reason the others don't offer an LSD is because it costs more. The only way they get a way with it is most buyers don't know the difference between traction control and a real LSD.

My advice about winter driving is look at the cost of your insurance deductible and the time it will take to get the car bought repaired if you crash it. Then go out and buy a set of winter wheels and tires. Nothing beats a good set of snow tire when things get slick. All season tires are a compromise for all seasons. The IS tires work really well on dry and wet pavement. A good set of winter tires works really well on snow and ice. All season tires fall behind all year long.
  • birdman579birdman579 Member Posts: 151
I certainly agree that the G35 is an awesome car, but the price difference is a factor. The IS with a 5-speed is $32,355. A G35 with the premium, sport, and winter packages is $34,270. This is as close to equipping them the same as possible. Both have Xenons, sunroof, leather, auto-dimming mirrors, etc. The IS has a LSD and center armrest, the G has stability control and a more powerful engine. Pricing may change slightly when the 6-speed is available in the G. This just compares MSRP, you can get a much better deal on the IS from the dealer and Lexus is offering 3.9% financing for up to 60 months. The difference ends up being several thousand dollars.

After having driven both, I think the IS is more nimble and fun to drive, but not as much raw power like the G35. The interiors are both fine, neither are great. The exterior styling award definitely goes to the G. The IS is nice, but still looks too similar to a slammed Civic. And although it might be a insignificant to some, the G gets positive reactions from everyone I talk to. The IS300 is much more ordinary.
  • jmessjmess Member Posts: 677
I wonder if the IS would look better if it had more power than the G35? Look at how ugly the WRX sedan is. The G35 sedan shape doesn't do much for me. The G35C shape does work well for me and you can get an LSD.
  • birdman579birdman579 Member Posts: 151
I'm not that impressed with the WRX no matter how fast it is. The difference is that the Subaru is more of an economy car and can be had for about $25K. The IS and G are entry-level luxury sedans costing over $30K. I expect a more expensive look from cars costing that much.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I prefer the IS300 much more than the G35. It's the G35's ugly rear end that seals its fate for me as well. Also, the profile of the car looks like the Altima's a bit. Total turn off.
  • kartahkartah Member Posts: 10
I just picked up my IS last Thursday. And it's almost ready for the first 5 thousand mile service. It's so much fun to drive I just can't seem to get my hands off the beautiful 3-spoke steering wheel. And when I finally get out of the car I find myself standing in front of my garage admiring it.

My friend has a G-35, I took it for a spin and did not find the same feeling that I got from my IS. Both brakes feels about the same (quite sensitive), both have decent interior, the G definitely feel a bit roomier. But, perhaps it's a matter of taste. The G just didn't do it for me. Also I'd have to agree with the general consensus on the rear end styling of the G, it's a real turn off.
  • bjtjpsbjtjps Member Posts: 15
would be nice, mostly at the low end for pickup. i opted for the IS because of the manual - that limits the field considerably - and i also thought it was more fun than the G35. as for exterior styling, i don't care much for the rear of the G35, but both are unique - not many of either here in this area.
  • jmessjmess Member Posts: 677
The IS is styled more for the young at heart. If you parked a debaged IS and G35 in a high school parking lot I would bet the majority of the kids would gravitate towards the IS shape before the G35. Some may call the IS juvenile but I am 50 and I don't get tired of kids telling me how cool they think my SportCross looks.
