Older Honda Accords

If you guys had to choose between the new restyle Altima, and the "hold its value Honda Accord", which one would you choose?

I need to get a new car soon, and I am willing to wait to the end of the summer, so I need to get one of the other.

One other thing, I might want to trade in the 2002 car, for the new redesign 2003 Accord when they come out next summer.

What would you guys do?

i'd buy a 2001 right now if you're even considering a 2003 purchase. or keep your current car until 2003.... unless you have $$$, i can't see buying a new 2002 only to maybe trade it for a 2003. maybe you got bucks to burn, which is great...i'm just saying, if you need a car now, why wait? from what i see, accords are going for right around invoice now, and the 3.9% financing ain't bad. am i nuts?

My brother-in-law has a 99 Accord V6 EX. He brought his car in to fix a problem with his gas gauge, basically it would stick at the half tank point and not go any lower until the tank was close to empty, only then would it jump down to show the actual fuel level. He said after that repair, his "Check Engine" light has been on.

The dealer he went to claims to have replaced a few different components so far, but to no avail. Does anyone have ideas as to what the problem could be? Any TSBs or recall on this?

so if you buy a 2002 you may be stuck with it for longer than 2003 especially if start up of the totally new Altima produces some less than stellar quality.
What code is the check engine light producing. It's hard to diagnose OBDII without knowing exactly what the code is.

Curious, If you buy a car,like for say the 2002 Honda Accord which comes out in August, And i buy the car at Invoice, which i'm sure i can, cause i could of got the 2001 Accord, last summer at invoice, right after they came out.. but anyway.. as far as trade in value of the 2002 Accord in the summer of 2002, what would one figure it to be since there isn't a kelly blue book report out on it.

I know if i buy a 2001 Accord, as soon as 2002 get here the car is going to take a major deduct for trade in value.

For instance, in December i was about to trade in my 98 honda Accord EX-4cyld with leather, the car had 38k on it. They were going to give me 15500 for the car, but, i wasn't sure, so i waited till January, and since the year had roll over, Kelly blue book put my car at $13500,

so, if that is going to be the case, wouldn't it be wiser to buy the 2002 this fall, and trade it in before the kelly blue book value comes out on it?

Is the EX, a V6 or V4?? and if it is a V4 does it have leather?

Just purchased an EX sedan (4cyl./5-spd) Silver on grey cloth.

Amz997 - the EX comes in either V-6 or Inline-4. On the 4, you get leather with the EX-L package.

fxashun - actually, you'd whine more about the humidity than the heat if you live in Houston

2001 video review - good coverage, but I didn't notice any negatives about it - lots of positive stuff. I'd rather know the weaknesses of my future car so that I can gauge whether I can live with those weaknesses for a while.

Actually, I think this is a good time to get your hands on a Maxima - rather than an Altima with V6 or an Accord with V6. The performance for the current Maxima is still pretty good for the class.... whatever class that the Maxima is supposed to be.

I am looking to buy/lease a 2001 Honda Accord sedan or coupe. Does anyone know when Honda is coming out with the next generation Accord sedan and coupe. Is it 2002, 2003 or beyond? I am not certain I want to go with an Accord if Honda intends to introduce new generation models in a few months in 2002. If it is 2002, does anyone know where I can go on the web to see the planned or concept design. Many thanks.

The next generation Accord should be out in Fall, 2002 as a 2003 model. As is typical with Honda, you won't see any advanced information on it until a couple of months prior to launch date. (You may see the odd "spy" shot in Car & Driver or Motor Trend by, say, summer of 2002).

Watch www.vtec.net (Temple of VTEC) for info on the '03 Accord. I haven't seen anything yet, but they had one of the first shots of the current car before it was out. Detroit news also had this picture. You can also check www.mag-x.com, which is a Japanese car magazine site.

I have a 2000 accord EX and the light came on. Does anyone know if there is a way to reset the light manually? With the quality built in, i don't feel it is necessary to take it in to the dealer to perform the 7500 miles check. The check list for 7500 miles is basically inspection and change the oil. I can change the oil, but i don't know if it is worth 100 dollars to bring it to the dealer. Does anyone has the same situation? I would love to hear your opion..Thanks.

Maintenance and the check engine light are different things, if you have check engine light you better visit your dealer but maintenance light you can ignore it. It is very simple process but I don't quite remember, it was like insert the key into ignition-turn it to level II and at the same time push the little button under RPM gauge or some thing like that. I believe it is wrong some other folks will correct me.

The owner's manual explains how to reset the "maintenance required" light. I don't remember it exactly, but its like turn the car off then on agan and hold the trip odo button for so many seconds.

That owners manual has to be one of the most complete I've seen. It give details on how to change sparkplugs and other maintainance items that FoMoCo or GM just say to see the dealer on.

(Yes, I am a huge dork who read the owners manual cover to cover)

I reset this on my '98 about 2 weeks ago.

With the ignition off, push and hold the reset button on the dash (trip odometer reset). While holding the button, turn the ignition to 'On' or 'II'...the position of the key when the car is running. Continue holding the button for 10 or 12 seconds.

That should do it. If it doesn't, then I guess my memory is worse than I thought it was and you'll have to look in the manual.

I have two keyless entry fobs from an '01 Accord that I don't need. Is it worth trying to sell them somewhere? If so, site suggestons would be appreciated. Any idea how much they would go for (maybe it's not even worth my time)?

I hope I'm not doing anything wrong here. I'm not seliing them here, just asking if it is worth my while.

I negotiated the price with 2 dealers on Accord using email. I called them to arrange a date for pickup and both of them say they do not have any 2001 EX in stock.

Now they tell me I have to wait for 2 weeks to get the accord...

is their a waiting period on Accord?
BTW the price is 20498 + tax + 125 (tags)

I know guys who'd kill just to get the excess Accords off their lot. Where are you looking for the car? I guess it's possible they're out of stock, but that's not the norm.

My California dealers have spoiled me. $300 over invoice isn't bad if you consider the margin it represents over cost. You can always hit the internet to find one sooner.

I doubled check the light indicator and it was the maintenance light that i came at 7500 miles mark. I did consult with the manual and sure enough, the reset instruction was what you described and shared. I appreciated your input and advice. I'm looking for a used Accord or Camry, 97 or 98. Called an ad in the Kansas City paper, ended up with a wholesaler. said he buys cars coming off lease at local auctions. same as dealers. one owner cars. prices are less than dealers, of course. for example, 98 Accord LX, 30K miles, AT, he's asking $13,300. Similar car w/ 36K, $12,900. This is between the private party ($13K)and dealer price ($15,200 certified)I found on Edmunds.
I do plan to take any used car to a diagnostic mechanic. Any input? I'd appreciate an e-mail.

well my pristine 2001 LX V6 naples gold coupe is no longer pristine after 3 weeks.... while loading my golf clubs i noticed a dime-sized piece of paint chipped off the bumper by the rear license plate... it appears while someone was parallel parking they may have just barely tapped my bumper-- at least that's the best i can figure out what happened.....no indentations, but still, poor poor pitiful me.... and here i thought with no body side moulding, i'd only be worrying about door dings sooner or later....i may have to hire Baretta and his bird Fred to find the culprit..... funny how life turns out... as the noted folkie Prine once sang in song, "if heartaches were commercials, we'd all be on TV."
i wonder how my pristine 1999 solara is doing with its new owner...

Yes, there is a waiting period for Accord. DUe to aggressive financing to make Accord #1 this year, dealers are running short on Accords (Specially EX ones) My friend got a car which intown dealer traded with the other dealer (100 miles away)

They are now out of any EX Accords & their prices are getting away from invoice. Friend got 200 over, now they are not ready for even 300. (might change with the proper supply)

This shortage ( I believe limited area/region) is being created by dealers. they are not pulling enough cars from factory to satisfy demand in order to jack up prices. Accord body will be changed next year around september. I don't think that the current demand is this much high.
Oh! one thing that I like to mention, if dealers keep selling cars $200-$300 over invoice?? they won't be in business long time. The invoice that the customer thinks it is invoice is not actual invoice. This is what I believe.

I was driving a Buick Regal 3.8 liter for 10 years. I will be leasing an Accord EX this weekend, but I can't seem to make up my mind between the 4 cylinder and the 6. I've city tested both...and while I think the 4 may have enough power, I'm not totally sure.
Are there any opinions out there? Is the 4 noisy on the highway?
One more request...Green Gold or Red?

Your 3.8 has power on the low end. In contrast the accord L4 needs to be revved up to get going. So the L4 might SEEM slower. I have not had any issues with a lack of power with my L4 Accord on the highway. And since gas prices are on everyone's mind the 4 might be better. I'm getting 28mpg on the average. My Accord is noisier on the highway than any Regal I've been in but it is tire noise and not the engine. It fades into the background after a while.
As for the color...go with what makes you happy. I got silver because it came with the quartz colored interior. I found that interior color very appealing even though I was set on tan when I started looking. Try it out :-)

I asked my brother-in-law but he hasn't responded yet. Since the fuel gauge was sticking, I imagine that there aren't too many things that would need to be replaced to fix the gauge problem. Only thing I can think of is if they took apart the dash to fix the gauge problem and something wasn't wired properly, inadvertently putting that Check Engine light on. Will get back to you on this one.

'92 is a good year. 72K is low mileage too. The price seems almost too low. Check for previous accidents, service records, etc. Get it checked out by a qualified mechanic.

The 92' Accord should be an efficient, reliable car as long as the previous owners maintained it properly. I suggest checking the maintenance records and ensuring they followed Honda's service recommendations for the car, and having a trusted mechanic check it out. Be warned that Accords have an expensive 90,000 mile service, though. That's when the timing belt needs to be replaced, and it's wise to replace the waterpump and other belts as well even though the manual only recommends inspecting them. This service can be as high as $800 or $900 at the dealer.

I own a 91' Accord with 135,000 miles on it right now. My wife and I bought it about 5 years ago while we were in college, and it's simply the best car I've ever owned. I've owned 4 Toyotas also, but none of them have compared to our Accord. I still trust it each day during my 80-mile work commute.

Saturn is the most reliable U.S. brand, but they still don't hold up as well as Hondas. You didn't mention what year Saturn you're looking at, so it's hard to make any specific recommendations.

Thanks for the advice guys...yes I plan on checking the service records and I have a good friend of the family who is an excellent mechanic so I'll be having him check out anything I'm thinking about buying. I was also thinking that it was a little too good of a deal for a car with such low milage for a '92. But I guess I'll just take a look at it, the service records, and have the mechanic look at it. It depends on who owns the car, if it's some little sweet grandma who just doesn't drive a lot that's one thing

As for the Saturn...I don't have a particular one in mind, my mechanic is very into Saturns because they are reliable, get good gas milage, and are much less expensive to fix (compared to a foreign car) should something go wrong...even typical maintenance costs. My problem is I don't want a manual because of the insane traffic in this area and 95% of all the used Saturn ads have been for manuals.

we have a few cars at home with trunk liners. They are pretty good for putting dirty stuff and easy to clean. The cargo net helps prevent stuff from flying around in the trunk, especially useful with the somewhat slipper rubber liner. If you don't intend to carry wet or dirty stuff in your trunk then you'll probably can live without it.
