My first 9000 miles included 30-50% highway miles and I averaged 30 mpg per tank. Now I am spending much less time on the highway and my milage has dropt to 26 mpg and on this last tank with no highway milage I got just 22 mpg. Is this normal decline with less highway driving? I was considering putting in a new air filter with 10000 miles on the odometer. We have also suffered some colder weather here in Tidewater VA. Today it is 35 degrees for a high. I understand the cold weather also decreases milage. I have been very happy with the car overall. Only a couple of times had I really needed more power than the I4 could muster. It handles the curves very well. I will probably put on stickier rubber when the Michelins wear thin. The upholsery is holding up well showing little to no stains or dirt. The radio is a great improvement over what is in the 1999 Odyssey. I just wish it has a cassette player since I have so many cassette tapes. Happy motoring "in one Accord."
"You put out some bad information. Honda does NOT automatically supply a loaner car on overnight warranty repairs"
Thanks for responding to that. I was just going to post asking if that were true. I asked my salesperson and he said Honda does not require it, but that if I 'came and spoke with him' he would try and get one for me.
I've had my '04 Accord EX sedan now for just over 2 months now and I must say I'm now impressed with the vehicle. Early on there was a problem with a LOUD windshield rattle that was addressed quickly by Honda by changing the entire rubber windshield seal. So far, no rattles have returned. The 4cyl/auto tranny combination is incredible. My brother assumed I purchased the 6 cyl when he first rode in the car, it is that smooth and powerful. After taking an 800 mile trip I really became a believer. Effortless power, excellent high speed handling. With just under 3k miles on the clock, I opened the Accord up to an indicated 105 MPH...very effortless, definately had more speed in it but safety/sanity made me back off. I don't want to start a 6 vs 4 battle but I can honestly say the 4 offers performance that satisfies me. My only "problem" other than the rattle was some idiot "keyed" my right rear quarter panel. Why do people do such things, very cowardly act. Anyway, a low comprehensive deductible and a great body shop has my ride looking better than new. My Accord, I think I'll keep her.
I have been getting similar mileage figures from the nav trip computer. Avg mpg ~27-28 mpg for mixed hwy/city driving. 34+ strictly hwy on long trips. Never less than 26. (i4 manual)
Just out of curiosity, what were the circumstances that the power of the i4 was insufficient?
One last thing, those of you driving your Accords well in excess of 100 mph are seriously endangering the rest of the general public. I don't care how safe you feel it is, how deserted the road you choose to defy death on is or how good a driver you think you are. I just hope you haven't had children yet so that you allow Darwin's law to work.
My experience is similar to yours--average split highway/city use is 24 to 25 MPG. City driving only was 22.6 and on a recent highway trip, freeway-only driving was 33.2 MPG. That's quite good for a 3200 pound car with plenty of power. I consider my '04 Accord EX-L 4 cyl. Automatic sedan a luxury/economy car...........Richard
I wanted to know my exact build date (you can find the build month/year on the driver side door panel, at least on the Accord EX-V6) and tried to find out from my dealer, who said they didn't have the info - they had to trade to get my car. I called the dealer they traded with - they didn't have the info on any of their paperwork, either. So, I tried HondaCare, and got a very helpful person, who tried everything she could think of. It seems it isn't information that they record or keep.
Isell or one of the other salesmen or owners probably can answer your question better than I, but somebody logged your vehicle in when it was delivered to the dealership. Every business, from Wal mart to the local dress shop, has a person who acts as a receiver to make sure merchandise is delivered so the manufacturer's invoice can be paid.
Somewhere, that information still should be on file. How can dealerships tally holdbacks and tax responsibilities without knowing when they received their vehicles?
My guess is that the office and sales types at the dealership probably don't want to take the time to investigate.
We get ranges. I'm looking for a red 5 speeed EXL Accord and we don't have one in stock. I can look at our incoming allocation and see I have a build date of 2/05-2/09. That's when it will be built.
Why would this be in the least bit important anyway? In nine years I've never been asked for this and I've been asked a LOT of questions!
Traction control can be self-defeating in some situations. I have found that in deep snow, it is sometimes better to shut it off. I was on an unplowed road in deep snow two years ago in my front wheel drive Lexus ES300 and kept getting stuck, while other front wheel drive cars were pulling around me. The traction control on that car cut back on the engine/applied the brakes, preventing me from getting any momentum. As to the shift lever, I too, am used to cars having a control that STOPPED at D, rather than at D3. I don't understand why Honda sets it up differently. When starting up, or going from reverse to drive, its nice to just move the shift lever back until you FEEL it stop, without looking. I too, have sometimes driven in D3 when I didn't intend to. Then I shift it into drive, but once or twice, assuming I was in D3, I inadvertently shifted into neutral, because I was, in fact, in Drive. I just would like to know the rationale of Honda having it stop at D3, instead of drive, like the rest of the automotive world.
We have a great Honda dealer in our area. Once I got a loaner because the dealer had to overnight a part. It wasn't a "Honda", but I got a loaner. I was planning to wait and they told me I can have a loaner. I think the Honda service dept. in Colorado are pretty good, but some are better. Go check out the other dealers.
I still accidently shift the lever to D3. Someday I'll teach myself to shift to D.
I've yet to shift the car into D3 unintentionally. Now I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong, that I always hit D without looking.
As for the exact build date - why *shouldn't* I know this? I've known for all my other cars. And, according to the Honda Care rep who called to find out if I had received good care from the first Honda Care rep (I guess she was still in training?), it's one of the most asked questions they get.
I wash whenever the weather permits - would like to do it weekly or even more often if required, but this time of year it's tough. If the temp is >39F I'll wash. I try to wax every two months, as I have a black Honda & it takes extra care to keep it looking good. I absolutely refuse to let anyone else or any carwash, clean my car.
I have 9200 miles on my 04 EX-L and can't say enough good things about the car. This has to be the best Accord, probably even the best car, I have owned. I had a 2003 EX-L coupe which I absolutely LOVED (had to part with it for an upcoming baby) but I find I enjoy driving this sedan even more. Maybe it's the XM.
The short answer is NO. I always park AWAY from others and walk the extra few steps to stay away from door dinging fools. If I see a vehicle taking up two spaces I would never scratch or otherwise molest the vehicle, that's a bit cowardly & childish, don't ya think? No, someone just got jealous of my rugged good looks and scratched my car. No worries, its all better now. My advice: keep your keys in your pocket, one could get hurt using a semi sharp instrument.
Cars keep getting faster these days....to expect some drivers not to go over the posted speed limit is naive. Its gonna happen, illegal or not. Remember, power corrupts.... Accords of all years are used by many as the car of choice to hotrod. Me, I worry more about makeup applying, newspaper reading, cell phone using drivers on the road. They will kill you just the same.
I've had my 04 LX about a week now and continue to find things I love about the car. Overall, I couldn't be more pleased.
One relatively minor issue for me is the lack of lumbar support adjustment. The average they have designed into the seat is a bit too much for me. Temporarily, I've put a little pad behind my upper back, which evens out the pressure up and and down my entire back.
Another thing I'm trying is tilting the seat a little more upright, which also seems to even out the pressure between my lower and upper back. I think I've had a tendency to tilt it too far back in the past.
Has anyone else had the same reaction, and come up with a solution?
I am not saying I do not think people are going to exceed the posted speed limit. I do it every day - but only by 10-15 mph MAX. I am not driving my HONDA ACCORD in speeds in excess of 100mph. Trust me, I am far from naive. I work in an emergency room and see the consequences of unsafe, impaired and careless driving every day. All I am saying is that it is foolish to drive any car that fast on public roads, especially a Honda Accord. Even more foolish to brag about it. And don't get me started on cell phones.
I too was trying to determine the build date of my vehicle. I was wondering how long my vehicle had been sitting on the lot - thought that might be the reason why the salesperson was so anti trading another dealership for the exact vehicle I wanted, or not telling me when they would receive from Honda the exact vehicle I wanted. You indicated dealerships are aware when they're receiving certain vehicles (ie a red Accord coupe). We're just curious, that's all....is that OK? Every other auto manufacturer tells you when the vehicle was built... Also, some recalls and TSB's refer to build dates (at least Ford's do) I've determined that my 2004 Accord EX-L 2.4L was built in August, 2003. I'm not wild about the fact that the vehicle had been sitting until last Saturday, but what're you gonna do.
Because I'm curious, that's why. Every car I've had (4 prior to this one) had the exact make date shown - I figured all cars did.
It doesn't make a "twit of difference" as in if it was made on the 6th, I wouldn't want it, but the 7th, I would. And, frankly, it shocks me that Honda doesn't have a clue EXACTLY when cars were produced. Seems to me THEY would want to know - wouldn't it be interesting to know that all cars with the shifting seat problem had the seats installed on the same day, and that's why some of us have the problem, and some don't?
Why does it surprise anyone that someone wants MORE information, rather than less? Why in the world do you care that I, and obviously others, want to know the exact make date? If it's one of HondaCare's "most asked questions" as the HondaCare person said, lots of people want this information.
If honda posted the build date-then they would have to discount monday cars-supposedly the worst build day of the week:)
I mean it is bad enough people looking for J built hondas and those without the wonderful Michelin energy tires-now add monday built cars to that list of hurdles for the poor sales guy.
See Message #13343--my '04 EX-L came from all over the world. I guess I should be happy that final assembly was in Japan, but Ohio Accords are surely excellent, too.
I really don't care if any parts were made on a Monday......uh, well, maybe I'd prefer a Wednesday engine and tranny......Richard
What is important to one person isn't at all important to another.
"Most asked question?" really?
In nine years, I've been asked (I thought)every question known to man but NEVER, ONCE has anyone asked me the exact date a car was built.
But...that's O.K....whatever floats your boat.
I guess I focus on the things I find to be more important...to me.
Having said this...Honda go's by VIN numbers to determine when a car was built. Like someone else said, it's possible the car was built on two different days depending on production schedules.
I wasn't picking on you, I just didn't and still don't understand why it would be important.
What day is the car built? When the first two hunks of metal are bolted together or when the last little piece is installed?
I would say the build day is when the car actually 'comes to life'. Some people say that life begins at conception (i.e. the first bolt is tightened) but others say the birth day is when the car becomes a sentient being (the suspension and drive train are installed).
Could there be a more important question for us to ponder?
I'd be kinda sensitive to things that hurt folks too. But in my experience I'm much more attentive the faster I go. All of my tickets have come AFTER I have slowed down to "normal" speed and my attention level starts to waver.
In fact I'd go so far to say many other drivers are probably the same way. Eliminating the racers and speed junkies, the fear of a $$$ ticket hightens the attention level greatly. Not much to look for other than cops and the road when you start getting up there in speed.
We agree on one thing - what is important to another isn't necessarily important to me, which is exactly why I ignore the posts that aren't important to me. I was responding to another's post with information that I had. I thought this was how this board worked, isn't it?
And, yes, really, - that's what the Honda Care rep said - "most asked question" - I guess she would be as shocked as you seem to be to hear that you have NEVER ONCE been asked that.
As for more important questions - important to whom? Is there a test or poll somewhere to determine if a question is important enough to ask here?
Someone must have slipped something into my drink, because I'm starting to *like* my Accord's styling. I'm not a person to like something just because I own it--usually the opposite happens. I start to dislike it more after some initial dislike.
When I first bought my Accord, I couldn't even see it in my mind's eye when I wasn't looking at the thing. Uh-oh, I thought, *that's* not a good sign. After a couple months of ownership, I'm starting to really appreciate the exterior design. In many ways, I think the design cues are subtle and take a bit of time to appreciate.
When I first started my car search i thought I might end up with an Altima--the design really appealed to me--at first. The Altima never made my cut because I got tired of the design before I ever drove one.
I'm thinking that the Accord is going to look better a few more years into it's generation while some competitors won't be aging very well. However, I'd still like to see a re-design of the tail light assembly--the one component I still have an issue with.
What do you think about your Accord's exterior? Is it getting better or worse for you? Am I delusional?
Although I have never driven an Accord and initially disliked the redesigned 03 exterior, one reason I choose the Camry over the Accord; I too am beginning to like the exterior of the Accord. The Accord could very well be my next car. The Camry is a fine car too, but the Accord has been rated higher than the Camry by just about all the magazines.
Maybe I am a little more sensitive to reckless driving as an ED doc but I highly doubt your attention increases as you go faster. Dateline NBC is on now, they just got finished describing a phenomenon called unintentional blindness where you are paying so much attention to one thing that you fail to see something else. ie. you may be keeping a sharper look-out for cops but you are more likely to miss the slow moving vehicle, piece of road debris, unexpected curve, construction work, pot hole, slowed traffic on the other side of that hill, guy on the side of the road changing his tire... you get the point.
It sounds like you are not including yourself in either the 'racer' or 'speed junkie' category. Also seems you driving record disagrees given all your tickets.
Look, I'm a reasonable person. I understand that there are unsafe drivers out there for whatever reason (distraction, intoxication or just plain old stupidity). I just hope that I'm not in the wrong place at the wrong time when you or someone like you accidently kills or severely injures someone.
And my "speed junkie" ones. That's when I'll admit I'm wreckless. But when I have my cruise set 100mph I have never been caught speeding. Now when I slow down the "flow of traffic" I have several 75 in a 55s.
The speeding that is admittedly dangerous is the times when I don't want that other car to pass me type of speeding. I get caught up in that on occasion. Yeah that's dangerous. No doubt.
"Speed Junkie" is the main reason my LS400 has "T" series tires on it. I might run out and try out the 155 MPH top speed. That's why I drive a Civic SI instead of something with a V6. Also why we bought a EX-L instead V6. That's dangerous stuff speeding for the sake of speeding. But it's quite a rush doing 145 with lots of throttle response left in you 300ZXTT...So I sold it.
But daylight driving at 100-120MPH isn't all that dangerous on many rural interstates. Making the blanket statement that "speeding it dangerous" is about as useful as "say no to drugs" since everyone knows a pothead who cleans up every Monday and carries on a very successful life. The interstate was designed so that there aren't supposed to be surprises. Long and flat with limited and well marked curves. I don't know where you live but try some Interstate-20-75-16 in Ga or 75-95 in Fla.
But I guess giving driving tips is kinda regional cause I can't for the life of me figure out how people in the North East are staying warm tonight.
Why is speeding 100 or greater hazardous, "ESPECIALLY IN A HONDA"??? I have owned 4 BMW's & 3 Porsche's and the brakes and tires on my Honda 6 speed coupe are as good or better than any of those. True, I can't hang the corners at 100+ like I used to in the Porsche, but a good driver in a modern, properly equipped car is safer(on dry, uncongested roads)at 80 or 90 than the majority of the idiots that I see out there every day. Contrary to what the idiots in DC would like us to believe, speed doesn't kill - it's reckless driving, alcohol, poor driving skills and just plain inattentiveness. Oops, I left out a biggie - failure to adjust your speed to road conditons, i.e. snow, rain, sleet, fog, etc.
Build date - most asked question - malarky! She probably tells everyone that thier question is the most asked to make you feel more important. Month and year should be more than adequate, but I'm sure the orignal dealer knows when they received it!
I liked the new Accord styling, but wasn't wild about it when the latest model was introduced in Sept., '03.
When I started shopping for a new car 11 months later (last August) it was the Accord's INTERIOR that was more important for me. I see more of the inside of the car than the outside and the slick instrument cluster and high quality interior fittings mean more to me than the exterior which I think is quite nice, too.
I think that any car that runs as well and is a comfortable as the new Accord will soon look beautiful to the owner now matter what it looked like initially.....Richard
Plus most interstates have plenty of room to the sides to see them coming. I am afraid of being hit by deer our here in the boonies where I live. That's reason #2 I don't speed at night.
Besides it's only Proteges that get hit by deer. I think nearly every member of that forum has ben hit.
Wreckless....That's a good one Talon. You get my drift though.
Anybody check out that new Scion Tc coupe. That's one sweet looking ride. I'm gonna be looking VERY closely at those when they come out.
Although I like the exterior styling a lot, the interior is what really sold me on the Accord too. When I first looked at the Accord, I drove to the dealer on a whim, because I was mad that my Taurus broke down and I spent 8 hours and $800 getting it fixed (not to mention missing a day of work). I did not really think I wasy going to buy a car. But when I sat in the Accord, I was stuuned. I thought the car would be too small for me. But it has a beautiful, comfortable interior, even for fat guys like me. Now that I have adjusted to it, it feels far more comfortable and roomy than my Taurus, although headroom is a bit less with the sunroof. That's OK though. I'm not too tall and I always wanted a sunroof. I looked at the Camry too, and although it seemed nice, it didn't wow me like the Accord, and the interior felt smaller and was defintely less "high tech" than the Accord's. I have my car two months now, and it still amazes me.
i still like the exterior styling of my 03 EX-V6 in the gold/beige color. i got the windows tinted as well, so the chrome stands out a little more. the BEST part is that the part between the front side windows and the back side windows is painted black, so with the tint, it almost looks coupe-ish. my Jettas were always body colored between those two windows, so the line was "broken" except in my black Jetta.
the front of the new Accords, in fender area, is actually kind of muscular looking. the crease above the front wheels is nice. the side view is great too. the rear looks great, but can look bad in some colors i think. also, the dual tailpipes make a huge difference to me. makes the car automatically look more substantial.
all that said, coming from Jettas and Cabrios, the Accord still feels HUGE to me. my next car will not be as big. probably TSX size. bigger than Jetta, smaller than U.S. Accord. i can't use all the space i have, and it seems almost limosine-ish to me sometimes!
LOVE the interior. wish the interior lights were blue instead of white, but at least they aren't red/orange. (puke).
dust90: What I don't get is how you can even begin to rationalize that driving any vehicle over 100 mph on public roads is safe under any conditions. True, most of the time you will get away with it and I'm sure it's lots of fun. I used to drive my '72 Mustang convertible like a jackass also when I was in high school. In retrospect I am lucky I didn't kill myself.
Under safe conditions (i.e. closed road or track), I am sure your Accord is a capable machine. I don't think the sedans are as capable. Honda Accords are not sports cars, they are family sedans. Yes they can go fast and have good driving dynamics but this does not make them sports cars (or even sports sedans). The new V6 6sp coupe may be an exception.
gee35coupe: As long as the "pothead who cleans up every Monday and carries on a very successful life" does not get behind the wheel while intoxicated, I could care less what he does. He is not endangering my life by his actions. Reckless drivers are.

An individual dealer may decide to do this on their own however depending on the circumstances.

Do you protect from dings by straddling two parking spots in the front row instead of parking way in back away from the other cars?

When I started shopping for a new car 11 months later (last August) it was the Accord's INTERIOR that was more important for me. I see more of the inside of the car than the outside and the slick instrument cluster and high quality interior fittings mean more to me than the exterior which I think is quite nice, too.
I think that any car that runs as well and is a comfortable as the new Accord will soon look beautiful to the owner now matter what it looked like initially.....Richard
Besides it's only Proteges that get hit by deer. I think nearly every member of that forum has ben hit.
Wreckless....That's a good one Talon. You get my drift though.
Anybody check out that new Scion Tc coupe. That's one sweet looking ride. I'm gonna be looking VERY closely at those when they come out.
the front of the new Accords, in fender area, is actually kind of muscular looking. the crease above the front wheels is nice. the side view is great too. the rear looks great, but can look bad in some colors i think. also, the dual tailpipes make a huge difference to me. makes the car automatically look more substantial.
all that said, coming from Jettas and Cabrios, the Accord still feels HUGE to me. my next car will not be as big. probably TSX size. bigger than Jetta, smaller than U.S. Accord. i can't use all the space i have, and it seems almost limosine-ish to me sometimes!
LOVE the interior. wish the interior lights were blue instead of white, but at least they aren't red/orange. (puke).
