cmm4, I did test drive the vehicle. The pulling problem wasn't as prominent on the test drive. I thought it was the road! It wasn't until I was more then half way home (with a sreaming baby, mind you!) that I noticed how bad it was. As for the power, I thought it adequate until I hit some hills, near my home, that were not on the test drive. Too much shifting going on down there in automatic transmission land!

I have heard a rumor that there is a $1,000 rebate floating around out there on the MPV. Anybody else? Also, a $500 rebate on the entertainment system?

We are looking at a white ES. There is also a program car on the lot w/6,000 miles. What is a good price for a new ES?

We have looked at all of the mini-vans. The MPV owners seem to be the happiest bunch! We drove a Windstar SEL last night. It was very nice, but we can't get over the reliability record. Odessy is supposed to "drive on water", but the interior is U-G-L-Y!!

    Appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Yes, there is a $1,000 rebate on the MPV. A few dealers told me this as I was shopping around. You might even be able to get more off then that. Don't forget to work from the invoice price only! This includes any options already on the vehicle. Remember the dealer holdback as well. Some dealers might be willing to sell you the van for invoice cost because they will still be making money on the holdback. Fair enough! Just be firm. There is always one dealership out there who wants your business more then the others! Good luck!

My husband and I recently test drove an mpv and were both very comfortable. The only problem is neither of us has ever driven a minivan before and don't know what to look for. We know we want a minivan, and with baby number two only two months away we need something soon (currently jam packed into Mits. Eclipse). We would like an Odyssey, but we don't know if we can wait. Also the mpv fits better into our budget. I have been reading about your problems and responses for days and would appreciate some advice. Should we wait for an Odyssey? Has anyone had better luck with the Sienna? Does anyone suggest another minivan? Your advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Nadria,

During your reading please notice the number of problems and postings of all the minivans you are considering. I believe you will find that the MPV has less of both, problems and postings. Certainly, budget wise anyone with an intelligent bone must seriously consider the MPV. You should also consider the unique features of the MPV that are not offered in other vehicles for the same price. i.e. Roll down windows, slide by side seating, tumble 3rd seats, and awesome sound system. I also found that the MPV's roof rack was extremely useful and well priced as compared to the ODY. Generally, you will find a fully loaded MPV with leather, roof rack and 6 cd changer for about $24 - $25k. Thats at least $3 - $5 less than the ODY without the dealer markup.

Finally, I think the features are extremely applicable to a family. Kids need air! They will spill and leather cleans nicely, and when they start to fit you can separate them with the touch of your finger. Word to the wise, Never ever never, put two siblings on the second row of seats without having captains chairs!

I guess the first thing you have to ask yourself is what do you need from the mini-van? Because if you don't know what you need or want, then a good salesman can make his vehicle seem to fit your needs.

For example, there is talk about carrying a 4'x8' piece of plywood in the cargo area. That is great if you do that. I've never done that in any kind of van during my 35 years of life, so that is a pretty useless feature. However, if I do need a large area (not just cubic volume, but area) then that is a useful feature.

Since a minivan is used to carry people, ask yourself, how many people are we going to have in here 90% of the time. If you can, take those people with you and test getting in and out of the van. We took our carseat and tested putting the baby (or a doll when the baby was with grandma naping!) in each vehicle we were interested in. Why, we wanted to know if there were any odd angles and contortions we needed to go through to get in and out of the vehicle. During the test drive, my wife check on access to the baby, with her sitting in many seats. And since she is the driver 75% of the time, she drove it on her daily trips.

We took the van home to see how it was to park in our garage. (With the exception of the Odyssey, we were not allowed a lengthy test drive.)

We tried all of the goodies and drove with and without the sound system.

Bottom line, make a list of what you want and be objective when the saleperson makes the pitch for his/her product.

There is a big difference between needs and wants. We all have both and you must satisfy all of your needs and a fair amount of your wants if you are going to be happy with any vehicle you purchase.

    Cheers,

    TB

very nice post. Too many vehicles are purchased as an emotional response (ooohh, that car is sooo cute!), or, because it is the "hot" thing of the moment (well, Biff and Sue have a Suburban, so maybe we should get one).

If everyone took a very practical approach to this very expensive purchase, there would be a lot more happy drivers out on the road. Hey, maybe road rage would be a thing of the past!

Sorry to hear about your van drifting to the left. I certainly feel your pain. Like you, my 7 months old baby girl prompted us to buy our first new car for safty reasons. And we certainly enjoyed the styling and the tumble seat and the nimble size. However, the pulling problem ruins half the fun. All my previous used vechicles had pulling problems. And we are thrilled to drive in a rental car on long trips when the car goes straight down the road with no pulling. However, with this new van we have the pulling problem all over again. What a bummer. I guess we are pretty unlucky. I sent my van once to the dealer and they didn't fix it. So my confidence in them is gone. Although meera said she finally got them fix the problem after several trips to the dealer, I guess it's still hit or miss because your dealer didn't fix yours either during their first attempt. So at this point all I can say is hope you good luck on your next encounter with your dealership.

Baraby - how bad is your ticking sound? On mine, it is persistent ticking like from the valve tappets with too much clearance. This usually happens when the engine has too many miles on it. Is yours louder when parked in an enclosed space?

Since you will have children in child safety seats, pay special attention to the ease of entry, exit, and installation of both the seats and children. We didn't try our infant seat/base when we testdrove because our daughter had outgrown it by then, and I sure hope it will fit securely when we get around to child number 2. Installation of our toddler's safety seat was extremely frustrating until my husband moved the "slide-by" seat over 3-4 inches, got the safety seat as tight as he could, then shoved the "slide-by" seat back over. Now even I can get it tight using that technique. We had to get tether anchors installed, but maybe they're standard in new vehicles on the lot now (I think they can only be installed behind the second row.)

Our Mazda dealer was eager to have us test-drive unaccompanied-- didn't even try to come along. That gave us plenty of opportunity to try it in our garage, parking lot, highway, etc.... I also rented a van (another brand) for a day while we were trying to decide between van and sedan since I'd always said "I'll NEVER buy a mini-van."

We've had our MPV since September, and I still love it. (If only it got 30 miles to the gallon AND had a 250 horsepower engine, it'd be perfect.)

While I understand that most of the vans mentioned in this topic are probably still under warranty, many of you would probably be glad to pay a couple of hundred dollars to get rid of the problem.

One of the best resources I've ever found for dealing with alignment problems is a specialty frame shop. They have equipment to repair vehicles (including unibody) which have had their frames damaged. You may want to have them look at your vehicle to get a really accurate assessment of the alignment. They should also be able to determine whether any chassis/frame subassemblies are mis-aligned.

To find a frame shop, check your yellow pages. You could also contact body shops in your area -- they should know of reputable frame shops that you could try.

    Just a thought......

We got our MPV back yesterday from Mazda, no charge, immaculately cleaned and they paid for the two day rental. The A/C drain tube was clogged which caused the drivers side carpet to get soaked. They also had to replace the entire $300 airbag unit because the sensors got wet. Unfortunately the carpet was still soaked underneath as well as the layer of insulation. The service manager promised that if I dropped by tomorrow, he would have it fully dried out. If the carpet had been dry I would have been totally impressed.

I've owned an MPV since December, my mechanic bought an Odessey last summer. There is no doubt that if money is no object, and you can either wait or accept whatever unit is available, then the Honda is the top minivan on the market.

If you want the best minivan deal, that drives and maneuvers closest to a car, with the most flexible seating in any vehicle, then the MPV is for you. Check the MPV owner's lists for more info. Good Luck.

bule4me,I really notice the ticking at night time and it's not that bad. However, it's a new van - shouldn't be any ticking right? My cutlass ticks very load, and I'm sure my MPV is doing the same thing and will eventually get just as bad. will let you know what the dealer has to say when i bring it it (my service department here in Honolulu SUCKS!!). Not much choices here though.

I still love my Silver MPV.

That's how mine finally got fixed, the dealer sent it out to a shop. If mine wasn't fixed the service manager said the next step was a machine to check the frame. Oldjakd from the cruisers forum got fed up with his dealer and had a shop fix his shaking/pulling van. The dealers don't seem to have the right equipment for these problems.
  • rrbhokiesrrbhokies Member Posts: 108
Thanks for all the encouraging posts about the vibration and pulling. It's comforting to know that It's not in my head and that there are other's out there with similar problems.

If you recall, around the 65-70 mark, the vibration was just terrible. If you let go of the steering wheel, you can see the steering wheel shake back and forth on it's own. Additionally, it still pulled to the left despite the dealer doing a re-alignment.

I rotated the front tires only from left to right. I inspected the tires while rotating them and I believe that they may be "cupping". Anyways, after rotating them, I found the vibration to be even worse than before and now my van pulls to the right!!!!

Therefore, I am under the suspicion that my tires are bad and one or both tires probably has a slipped belt or something. Additionally, the cupping has probably damaged both front tires.

I can't do anything this week, but next week, I'm bringing the van back in and requesting they inspect the tires and replace them under warranty. I first complained about the problem when there was only 1K on the van, so even though the van has 5K on it now, they better not try to pro-rate the value on the tires.

My concern is now about the rear tires. I don't know what condition they are in. I'm going to have them check them at the very least, but I'm not sure If I can demand they replace them also, since I don't know that there is anything wrong with them.

Finally, what replacement tires should I expect to get, or better yet, request to get? I have the 16" tires from the touring package. Those are the Dunlops. It doesn't seem like the Dunlops have been very good tires, so will I likely get the same tires or have they changed them?
  • rrbhokiesrrbhokies Member Posts: 108
I almost forgot. This afternoon, my wife went to use the rear wiper on the van and it she said it didn't work. When I went to look at the van, I found the rear wiper dangling down hitting the bumper.

Although the wiper arm is still attached, you can spin the arm clockwise in full circle. However, it doesn't work. You can hear the motor trying to do something, but somehow, the rear wiper came unattached.

Has anyone experienced this problem? If so, is it something I can fix, or should I have the dealer look at it when I bring the van in for the tires?

Boy, I'm hoping I can eliminate these pesky little problems. If I can get the tires fixed and the wiper fixed, the only thing left standing in the way of a near perfect minivan is the sunroof that doesn't have a deflector!!!! Still can't use that sunroof without causing too much noise!!! I'm holding out for a factory deflector though instead of rigging up one from Pep Boys or something. I'm not that desperate yet.

One last thing. Gas mileage is holding steady at 18MPG. I can live with that.

Re: "I rotated the front tires only from left to right."

I am about to rotate my tires for the first time, at 5000 miles. It is my understanding, from the owner's manual (8-30) and elsewhere, that the tires should be kept on the same side of the vehicle and rotated front to back only. The manual also says to rotate every 3,750 miles. This seems very frequent. Is anybody rotating their tires this often? Thanks for any recommendations.

rrbhokies, You might find the tire reviews at this site useful.

I took my 4-week-old LX with 800 miles to the dealership service department for the van pulling to the left problem and to at least report the down lean on the left side (about an inch measured from nearest body part behind rear wheel). When picking up the van, they had not performed any work at all, and only told me that they called “Tech-line,” which was explained as a service they call when the dealership technicians don’t know how to fix a problem. Supposedly, the dealership will call me back so I can take the van back in when they do know how to fix it. Anyone ever heard of “Tech-line?” I haven’t seen it posted anywhere here, so I don’t know whether it’s Mazda-exclusive or a general service for under-trained technicians. From reading postings here, I'm relatively sure I can eventually get the problem fixed, but I'm wary that it'll be a headache to do so.

No matter what I try, those rear floor vents keep on blowing warm air...

Anyone having the same problem ?

BTW, I too have the front, upper vents almost not blowing any air when on the upper & lower vents position... Think it's a characteristic, not a problem as I read earlier posts.

I checked with Dunlop earlier this year. They said rotating at 3,750 miles is more often than necessary and 5,000 to 7,000 miles is more reasonable. I also asked about the rotation pattern and they agreed that a crisscross pattern is recommended (front tires straight back on the same side, rear tires diagonal to the front --- right rear to left front and left rear to right front.
  • meerameera Member Posts: 50
It sounds like your tires have been ruined because your van has been out of alignment so long. This is the case with ours. The cupped tires are now on the back. My understanding is when it's out of alignment only the front get cupped since that's where the steering is. You should tell your dealer to rotate the tires (front to back) and send it out to make sure it is really aligned. Mine is driving fine even though the back tires are cupped. If you have them rotate the back to the front you should be able to tell if the back tires are ok. Since our vans seem to be twins- I bet your back tires are ok. Is yours a 7/99? Good luck!

Response to posting#230:The wipe arm's connection to the base is loose. Pull the base cover open and tighten the nut connection. I had the same problem a week after I purchased the MPV. The mechanic fix it in 2 minutes. Good luck!
  • rrbhokiesrrbhokies Member Posts: 108
Yes, mine is a 7/99 also. If I remember correctly, we have virtually identical vehicles (LX, Dark Green, Touring Package, Sunroof). How close am I????

I can't get to the dealer until next week, but I'm going to push them to do a full check on all four tires, plus check the alignment. I'm sure they are gonna love me trying to tell them what to do, but I've been inconvenienced for too long now to let this go any longer.

bertwang - Thanks for the tip on the wiper. I'll go see about it. I'm not sure what you mean by the base cover though. Could you be more specific??
  • rrbhokiesrrbhokies Member Posts: 108
I did it!!! You were absolutely right. the nut on the wiper arm was loose and I just popped the cover, found the nut and tightened it. Works great!!!

I don't know if that's how all wiper arms are attached, but I'm not sure I like the fact that it's only held on by that little nut, nor do I like the fact that it appears that the nut comes loose this easily.

Had the nut loosed just one or two more turns, the entire wiper arm would have fallen completely off the van. That would have been real nice, huh???

A word to everyone: Even if your rear wiper is working properly, you may want to check the nut to make sure that it's fully tighened and hasn't come loose at all.

One more quibble regarding the wiper arm. Most rear wiper arms have some kind of plastic rest for the rear wiper to rest against when it's not in use. The MPV has none. I'm not an engineer, so I'm not sure if it really needs one, but I thought it was worth noting.
  • agt_cooperagt_cooper Member Posts: 202
Most wipers I've seen have a "geared" post that is attached to the motor or drive system, then the wiper arm has a grooved hole that mates to the gears of the post. The nut simply holds the wiper arm snugly in place. Perhaps the factory worker was having a bad day when your van's wipers were attached!

If you're concerned, you could use a little bit of "loctite" on the threads of the nut to make sure it doesn't loosen again.

I have noticed that when starting to brake at very slow speed (parking) I will sometimes hear a single click from under the van. There's been no change in braking performance otherwise. I wonder if it has anything to do with the brake force proportioning valve. Anyone else heard this click?
  • windeyewindeye Member Posts: 9
Yes, I've heard the same thing. I am not clear how
the brake system work. But so far everything
is OK with our LX (more than 5000miles).
  • cmunizcmuniz Member Posts: 604
I haven't noticed it on my MPV, but I hear it in our trooper and it's caused by the switch that turns on the brake lights and disengages the cruise control. I suspect it is the same thing in the MPV and only heard during the relative quiet of a slow stop in a parking lot. I am not a mechanic, but suspect it has no affect on braking.
  • mbk05mbk05 Member Posts: 1
Our LX is still going strong after 10 months/19000
miles. Just finished an 1100 mile trek from NE Texas to Northern Iowa and the van handled great. The only problem we've encountered was with a defective left turn signal switch. We noticed it started blinking twice as fast as the right. The local dealership replaced it without any problems. They also made an adjustment to the emissions sensor that Mazda sent us a recall
notice about. Gas mileage averaged 23 mpg/highway on our trip with the AC & Cruise.
  • meerameera Member Posts: 50
I guess our vans just have their birthdate and shaking problem in common- ours is white LX Sec pkg. I like the green, but hubby's car is almost the same color. Thought that would be too weird!

Let us know how it goes next week at your dealer. We're supposed to find out about getting those two bad tires replaced next week. The steering wheel is still holding steady. We've put almost 5000 miles on it since they fixed the alignment! Yesterday it hit 11,111 miles!
  • 1pedro1pedro Member Posts: 1
What you discribed as a deffective turn signal, may very well have been a burned-out turn lamp. I had a Sable several years ago in which if a bulb was dead the blinker would click faster.

My MPV was brought in from another dealer about 400 miles away.It was all cleaned and serviced when I got it.How can I tell when it was made.I think it was a real early model.
  • rs27rs27 Member Posts: 1
I have used the info gleaned from Town Hall Talk over several months to make a decision on my new car purchase.
I selected the MPV ES and was able to get an $800 under invoice deal. I felt so confident that I made the right decision until four days into ownership the transmission failed!
I took delivery of the vehicle with an odometer reading of 20 miles. I drove a total of 270 miles (city/highway)until the problem occured.
The dealer is currently replacing the transmission which is a very extensive process. Almost everything under the hood is removed including the front suspension/struts. It's ugly!!
I would like to hear from anyone with knowledge of a job such as this as to their thoughts of how it should turn out. Will the integrity of my MPV be compromised?
The mechanic believes it is a Ford transmission that is in these vehicles.

We just got out MPV last month. Emerald Green LX with Security Package and rear air (made in 09/99). We LOVE this van accept for 2 problems I have had though...

    1) Alignment problems, leans left. We brought it in a week after we got it and they did an alignment but it did not work. The second time, they replaced the 2 front tires, aligned it and balanced it. Works great now, not alignment problems

    2) Front end makes a "popping" sound at low speeds (turn corners, accelerating, decelerating and going into reverse). It does NOT make these sounds from a cold start. After driven around for a half hour, the popping starts. At high speeds I do not notice it. I can also hear the sounds if I rock the van. I took it in (also when I took it in for the alignment problem) they said it was the front struts, so they replaced them. But it still does it. Going to call them tomorrow for more help. Anyone else have/had this problem? Do you know what the solution is?
  • gordobrgordobr Member Posts: 4
I unfortunately had a similar problem with my new ES. After one month I had trouble shifting and then would go forward in reverse. My dealer had to replace the transmission. It has been about a month and the car now runs great. No issues at all. Although I am not happy about needing a new transmission, Mazda and the dealership were excellent about fixing the problem.
  • tboner1965tboner1965 Member Posts: 647
I would have said the springs are not seated correctly, but believe that should have been noticed when struts were replaced. Strut bearings, again should have been noticed when struts replaced.

I would check motor/transmission mounts. Can you make the noise occur be rocking the van back and forth instead of up and down or left to right? If the noise is present during forward/backward rocking, I would suspect a loose or fail(ed) mount.

You indicated rocking, but did not indicate the direction of the rocking.

I hope it is the mounts and not a complete transmission.

    Cheers,

Just got back from a two week vacation, that included 2,800 miles on the van!!! I will post more details in Cruisers. In response to postings over the last couple of weeks:

We ran the AC all the time. Temperatures ranged from 85 to 90 and humid. Air worked great. Used the recirculate feature to cool the van down, then clicked over to fresh air. Usually ran the front air on 1 or 2 and the the rear AC on 1 or not at all.

No problems with pulling. Is the pulling primarily associated with the Touring Package, 16 inch tires, and Dunlops???

Sorry to hear about transmission problems. Perhaps the silver lining is better now than later???

    Take care.

We finally got to evaluate the ac on our 2k lx model w/ rear air. We live in Texas and have had some mid 90's weather. After about 10-15 minutes we drop the front to 1 and but leave the back on 2 and everyone is happy. Just be sure to use the recirculate setting to get maximum cooling.

had my sapphire blue mpv for a week now. have had none of the problems mentioned here so far. while i am still in the breakin mode, ive tried in 2 or 3 occasions to run at 110 kph (65 mph).

at those speeds i hear a very slight wind whistling somewhere in the front area. this isnt really a problem but am just wondering: is this common with the mpv or should i bring the van to the dealer for a look see while its early?
  • dlncmaydlncmay Member Posts: 27
Hmmmm, no whistling w/ our Black LX. 9,000 miles and not even the first whistle while it works. Have it checked.

    My 2 cents.

Do you have a roofrack? They said it could cause whistling if it's installed crooked. You should mention it to the dealer. Congrats on the van. The blue is really sharp. We have white with 12k miles and a roofrack. It was whistling on one road trip back around 3000 miles. They did all this measuring of my roofrack but never got back to me about whether it was installed correctly. I haven't heard the noise again so I just forgot about getting an answer from the ridiculous dealer. good luck!

dlncmay - at break in mode this van aint at work yet, just having fun playing (-:

meera - thanks, originally i didnt want the blue since i just traded in my blue axxess, but my wife liked this color. now its beginning to grow on me too.

i have no roof rack so will check other possibilities and will let you guys know if i find it. when all else fail ill bring it to the dealer.

to all... what power issue? this van runs great!

Just read that Mazda will be issuing new tire pressure decals to all MPV owners. Does anyone know what the proper inflation pressure should be?
  • cyclerklmcyclerklm Member Posts: 26
    35 PSI, for 16" wheels/tires.

    NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 00V113002
Vehicle Description: Mini vans equipped with original equipment 16 inch tires.

Owners will be sent accurate tire information labels and owner manual inserts. In addition, owners of MPV's with 16" tires will be advised to check their tire pressure to make sure that the tires are inflated to 35 psi. Owner notification is expected to begin during June 2000.

    This info is available at

Is it safe to assume since my MPV has the 15" tires it won't be recalled?
  • dispatch1dispatch1 Member Posts: 30
I just got my MPV ES in the last week and checked the tire pressure today. I went by what the decal said, but will add 3psi to them tomorrow.

I haven't noticed any pulling problems or some of the other things people have been reporting, but my windshield wipers seem to "skip" when operating. The windshield wipes nice, but the noise and seeing the skipping action is irritating to say the least. Almost like I was running the wipers when the windshield was dry (I hope I am giving an accurate idea of what is happening). They skip (but wipe) on the down stroke. Any idea how to fix this?? The noise(eh, eh, eh, eh) is bothering me.

I bought an MPV on 6/20. That evening, when spouse drove it, we noticed a little wind noise coming from passenger side. (I should also say that dealer sold two IDENTICAL cars that day and I did not get the one I drove. But after arriving at price, etc., I left dealership to pick up a kid from camp... So I was there with restless kid and in a caravan that had been acting up and whose last repair bill hasn't arrived in mail yet.
Anyway, I also failed to notice what at first appeared to be water spots on trim on driver's side (driver's and second-row passenger) windows. I called next day and dealer said to bring car back and they'd have a look. They said detail man could clean and buff trim and it would be fine and to make an appointment for following day to have both problems resolved. I dutifully did so and waited while they discovered 1) they could not fix air leak and wanted me to make an appointment for a week later with an air-leak specialist who visits weekly... Detail man worked on car with no results and they ordered trim, so appointment was set for last Friday. I called Friday afternoon to make sure work was done and service dept. told me work had been completed. And today, receipt ($0 -- warranty work ) was ready and waiting. It said that wind noise was equal on both sides of car (not true) so no work was done. And it said that trim was replaced under windows. It was replaced under ONE window. Supervisors were (of course!!) gone. I didn't have to sign anything saying this was satisfactory work or anything, but really!! My questions: What should I ask for when I call the service manager on Monday? Are a lot of people having wind noise from one side? (Ours is not noticeable except on freeways/tollways.) Other than these rather small problems, we love the car. But I am beginning to hate the dealer. Glad they were supposedly doing trim work instead of engine or transmission. It would not be so clear to me that they had signed off on work not done!
