I took my ES in yesterday with a slight leak of antifreeze, a rattle in the passenger slider, a cracked visor cover and the hard shifting tranny.
At first the writer was not willing to give me a rental car in place of my ES. Once I reminded him that the cost of towing the ES from my home to the dealer should it overheat would quickly exceed the cost of the RC, he relented.
Apparently, a hose clamp had backed off and was allowing some antifreeze to drip out. Not a big deal but it was important to fix it now.
As for the tranny, I had them keep it overnight so they could do the pressure test of the lines. The only thing they could tell me was that it was within "SPECS". I'll be sure to let them know should it fail that I have given them the chance. I still believe the shifting is abrupt.
They adjusted the passenger slider and ordered the visor cover without incident.
Over all they are doing a great job of servicing our ES. I am still rather leary about the tranny.
If anyone finds a solution let us know. I would like to take the neck brace off soon.
Hi all, just turned 17k in our ES. Next week she goes in for bumper recall. However, the check engine light keeps coming on. The light comes on and stays on for 1-2 days, then just as quickly goes off. Dealer said he will check, but I'm guessing that if the light is not on when I take her in, there will be nothing they can do. Has anyone had the same problem? Any suggestions?
I thought that the triggering device for the check engine light had a memory so that when they are hooked up to the computer at the dealer, the dealer can tell why the light went on. Anyone know for sure?
Make sure your gas cap is being put on securely with two clicks. Prior postings have indicated that a loose gas cap can trigger a check engine light that is difficult to reset.
If you haven't purchased yet, here's some info. We have an ES and for the most part enjoy it very much. Yes it could use a bit more power, however, it is fine. Good highway cruiser. ES comes with a lot of good stuff, especially the side air bags. It's a fun van to drive, we love the sunroof and 6 disc cd. One thing you may want to check out is gas mileage. Ours appears to be an exception rather than the norm, but it gets pretty poor mileage in-town driving, generally under 15mpg. If it weren't for the poor mpg, I'd classify MPV as excellent, however, right now I rate it as pretty good.
I seem to see the same issues pop up on other posts that affect my 2000ES also.
1.On cold start-up,(about 12 hours after shutdown)even at 80 degrees, my engine goes to 2000 RPM, and incrementally steps down to about 1400 RPM after about 30 seconds. Normal idle speed after about 5 minutes is 750 RPM.
The owners's manual says to wait ten seconds before shifting, which I've always made a practice of doing anyway, but 1400 RPM after 30 seconds seems way too high.
2.My sliding door windows rattle a little also sometimes if they are partially open. No problems full up or down.
3.The transmission gives a good jolt each morning after startup when going from 1st to 2nd and sometimes even after warm up.
4. The second row passenger seat rattles when no one is sitting in it.
Have any of you been told by your dealer that there is a TSB (technical service bulletin) out on these issues?
Have you been able to get the problems resolved by your dealer anyway even if they claim that Mazda has not notified them of a fix?
On the positive side, the van handles and rides better than anything I've had before, including some well-reviewed sedans.
I had some mild vibration at 65-95mph that was cured by rebalancing my tires at a local tire shop at my own expense, so I wouldn't have to hear the dealer tell me that they couldn't find a problem.
I have not experienced any pulling to either side.
The brakes were great when I had to make a panic stop.
I'm a little disapointed in the mileage. I get between 18.5-23mpg, 19mpg being the norm at extended 60mph plus speeds, lightly loaded.
Engine power is adequate and smooth, pleasant growl on acceleration.
Seats are very comfortable on long trips.
Kids love the factory video entertainment system which also allows any kind of external audio/video signal to play through the system via the aux. input.
I own 2000 MVP lx purchased in Sept. . Last week our van just died at a stop sign in a parking lot. Repeated starting failed. Used our Mazda curve side service to tow it to dealer. Dealer told us the Computer had failed. My wife picked up van yesterday but did not have a chance to really talk to the maintenance people. I looked at the report sheet and I'm still trying to figure out what they all replaced. (It looked like Greek to me). I'll have to drop by for a better explanation from dealer. Hope this is an isolated case because when the computer failed, the van just went dead with no notice and this could be a real problem in freeway traffic. I have not read of anyone else having this problem so far in this forum. It would be nice to have had the new plates on at least before seeing this type of situation occur. Hope again it is only a isolated problem.
Thanks for the info on the tire balacing. I purchased my LX in August and have been waiting until I take the van in for its first oil change to have the dealer check the balance or alignment. The slight vibration at speeds above 65 mph has been my only main problem thus far. Glad to hear that rebalancing cured your problem.
I occassionally get the slight rattle in the windows when they are partially rolled down. No seat rattles. I've learned to feather the throttle on cold start-ups to smooth out the shifting. My mileage has been fairly consistent at about 21 mpg in mixed City/Hwy driving.
rg:
Sorry to hear about your mishap. I believe that one other poster indicated a similar problem a few months back. Hopefully this will be your only incident. Let us know how everything goes.
My second row passenger seat rattles too when no one is sitting in it.
They did not find the problem and the rattle is still there, even if they added some kind of foam under the plastic part covering the sliding bar. Think they did this just to keep ME quiet...
Just a trick: Try AC/DC's Stiff Upper Lip album and I can assure you it won't bother you anymore... 3:oS
I posted a trick from the www.contour.org website about something they call the throttle hang fix. Essentially it is the insertion of a copper cap in a tube that goes to the Idle Air Control. I tried a hole a bit smaller than 1/4". The details are in one of the MPV's threads earlier.
If it is too small, you will probably trigger the Check Engine Light, but I opened the hole up a bit more and we've had no problems since.
I think ours runs between 1100 and 1700 RPMS depending on the A/C before it starts stepping down.
Not a big reduction, but I think it will help the longevity of the transaxle on those mornings when Mrs. TBoner is running late.
I know this may not be your problem but I sometimes get this irritating rattling noise but it turns out to be the seatbelt rattling against the door of the van in the second row seat. Just a thought if it might help you too!
I bought my MPV lx about two months ago. It has 1000 miles on it now without any noticeable problems. One thing that concerns me is that the length of time I need to start the van. Sometimes it starts right away when I crank it. But very often I have to hold the key there for a much long time to start it. I did not see any pattern like when the car is cold or warm. It seems to be quite random. Sometimes I can start it right away when it is cold. Sometimes it takes much longer to start when it is warm. Just wonder if anybody has a similar experience.
Has anyone done any home maintenance yet on their 2000 MPV yet. I was wondering how difficult it is for a do-it-yourselfer to do simple routine things like, 1)Changing oil and oil filter. 2)Changing air filter. 3)Changing spark plugs. Thanks for any input
Done 1, and essentially did 2 when checking if a K&N would fit and both were easy. If your parts store doesn't list the MPV, just look up the oil filter for a Ford Contour/Mercury Mystique with the V6 engine. I believe the motorcraft # is FL820S (probably some dashes in there that I've not listed)
3 is not impossible, but looks like it will be more difficult
I have a 2000 mpv with 250 miles on it. Between 60 to 70 mph I feel a vibration in the wheel and sometimes under my feet. Dealer has balanced, swapped and is now at the tire dealer trying to figure out why. Tires are Dunlops. Anyone else had this problem or any suggestions as to what it might be?
I have an LX with the Touring Pkg. (Dunlops) and I also have a very slight vibration at anything above 70 mph. I've noticed that the vibration does not seem to occur until speed approaches 80 (Yeah, I know, but we tend to drive real fast here in Metro Detroit). I've also noticed that the vibration is less noticeable than when I purchased. Of course I could be getting used to it. Mpwhee posted recently that a rebalance at an independent tire dealer cured the problem. I'm planning on having mine rebalanced also. If that doesn't work, I'm going to have it realigned.
Keep us posted on what you find out at the dealer. I'll post my findings also. I'm curious if there are any other posters with the Dunlops who are experiencing this problem?
Make sure they do an alignment also. That's what was wrong with mine. Actually the dealer didn't do the alignment they sent it to an independent shop. Good luck!
Purchased an LX with rear air, touring package, 4 seasons and a moonroof. Took delivery with 50 miles on it since I had it sent to a dealer that was actually farther from my home from a dealer that is 3 miles from here. Long story, bottom line is dealers shouldn't try to clown people, or a buyer just may get what they want even if they have to travel to get it. Anyway, my van has a May sticker on it so I am bargaining that it came off the line late enough to have problems of earlier production. I will certainly submit posts of any problems I notice if they occur. I thank you all for the feedback which was quite helpful in my decision making. For the writer from Oregon...I purchased in McMinnville, all over the phone. Salesman was very direct, and didn't try to fast talk me. Was off work the day I took delivery...so I actually never saw the man. Just liked his style of business. My mom was also impressed with their organization when we arrived. I bought at 500 over invoice, then 1000 rebate. Brought my own financing at 8.35 so did ok for the deal. Others meeting same price but I have a problem with the schmoozing so I made a trip down on Sunday. Had rented an MPV a couple weeks ago for a trip to the coast, sealed the deal. Though of buying used through rental company but there are none available. 2001's are not changing except configuration of packages, and a slight (net) price bump of about $400. Edmunds info. Good luck to you and thanks again to others. Oh yeah, mine is sapphire blue, gray cloth. Everyone says it is a nice color, pretty in the sunshine....yes the sun actually shines in Oregon. Been quite a lovely "Indian Summer" Shelby's Mom.
Way to go - that is the package I was looking at too. I really like the blue, but I think my heart is set on red. McMinville, huh? Who was the salesman? that is only about 1.5 hours north. You must be from the Portland area if you came south. Not sure if I want the ES or LX - I would be happy with either. I have only seen three vans on the road in the Corvallis/Albany area. I feel like they must be family as I smile and wave as they drive by. They probably think "there goes another nut case". Still holding out for the 3.0L Looking forward to hearing how great your van travels are. What does Shelby think?
I wrote an entire (lengthy) response for you and then lost it trying to "Hide" it so others don't get bored. Now it is quite late so I will put out another post tomorrow with more detail. Shelby has not been in the van, except for the rental. She did fine then, though she has always been a great traveler...Salesman's name was Mark Ellingford (Jim Doran Auto Center). They only have a white DX though. Here in Beaverton, there were about 18 on the lot(less one Sapphire Blue), Hillsboro(only one visit there) - had 5 or 6. Lived in Corvallis during high school long ago so know exactly where you are. If I get waved at next time I am that way I will wave back! Have you checked Eugene or Salem for prices? I would also check with Mazda on that engine upgrade too. Or are you waiting for the ice to come and go? I was going to wait too until my truck started shivering in the morning cold. Back from SO CAL after 20 years. But 1 year since I decided I needed a new vehicle so I shop slower than most. More tomorrow.
Did you ever put the Amsoil in your transmission? I've been thinking about doing the very same thing when the time is right (only have 450 miles on the van), and am wondering if you've noticed a difference.
No, MochaVan has been neglected, sorry to say. I have been way too busy to give it the thorough fluid swap I plan, but soon, very soon. Gotta replace the windshield in it now, as a rock nailed it the other day, CRACK!!!
Don't you just hate it when you hit that "Post" button too early? Gotta lay off the Caramel
I'll have the tranny fluid switched prolly after things are less insane at Casa de Java (never?) and at work, and promise to post the results. Been so very busy this fall. But, you know what they say, "idle hands don't get the chores done." Oh, that's what the wife says! haha.
Our MPV ES just passed 11,000 miles, and we couldnt be happier. The ride and comfort are great on long trips, and the engine does no lug, it has adequate acceleration and power to go 80 mph all day long. I think our van is finally broken in, 22 mpg on trips and mileage around town is over 20 now. These changes seemed to take effect at just past 10,000 miles. This is a quality vehicle, without the high price of the Odessey (I refuse to pay at or above invoice).
Hello all. i have had my MPV since and love it for the most part. I would like a little better A/C and the tires-Yokahama-are awful! Otherwise we have enjoyed it. I had it at the dealership today to do the front bumper fix, and they also told me there was a recall on the computer. Some of them will accept a "reset" and some have to be replaced, which mine does. Anyway, the service tech the check engine light goes off and on with no warning, and there is nothing wrong with the van. just thought I would pass this on, as I had not gotten anything about it in the mail.
I have Yokahama tires and they are going to have to be replaced before winter sets in here in Tennessee. Does anybody have a recommendation? I have the LX with 15" wheels. I am trying to find a Yokahama dealership in my area but no luck so far
Mazda Corp. knows very well about the vibration problem around 60 mph. Our new 2000 MPV was in the dealership for two weeks. New, perfectly balanced tires corrected the vibration. You should have the tires balanced with a Hunter 900 balancing machine to make sure they are OK. It took 5 tries to get a decent set of tires on our MPV.
Bring your vibrating 2000 MPV to your dealer and tell them that Mazda knows about this problem. We were told by our dealer that their Mazda rep. called the national Mazda engineers to help solve the vibration problem with our MPV.
We started to look into the Lemon Law but ended the effort when the new tires made our MPV tolerable on the highway.
Congrats on getting new tires! I can't get anyone to return my calls. The shaking is coming back again and I know the only way to fix it is new tires. I guess I will start calling again. I just don't feel we should have to pay for new tires when they were ruined because the van was out of balance from the factory. When you say it took five tries, do you mean they tried different tires five times or you had to bug Mazda five times? I'd appreciate any hints you have for getting new tires from Mazda. I know others have bought tires themselves.
We bought the first set of tires and returned them after finding they did not help much. Our dealer told us they tried 4 different sets of tires before the vibration stopped. I guess the dealer finally took the MPV to a tire dealer to make sure the tires were perfectly balanced.
So, the last set of tires was the 5th set that had been mounted over the two weeks the dealer had the MPV. This gives insight into the lousy tires that are being manufactured and put on new autos.
Also, we returned to the dealer at least four times, over the two week period, to test drive the MPV. We refused to accept the MPV until the vibration was gone.
Good luck with your dealer. Our dealer treated us respectfully and worked hard to solve the problem. (I think they got tired of dealing with us because we were so persistent. I wrote a small volume about the whole episode in order to document the events in case the Lemon Law would apply.)
There is a Mazda customer service center that you can call and talk with a real person. This service is supposed to coordinate communication with you, your dealer and Mazda in order to start the problem solving process. Your dealer can give you this toll-free number.
thanks for responding. I have called customer service several times. they were supposed to get the dealer to get back to me. I've also tried to get a meeting with the regional manager. They are trying to blow me off. I guess I'll keep trying.
To AlexV1, I have had my DX since Feb now have 15,000mi. My van has used no coolant at all,I would definetly get it checked by dealer.I have noticed the idle speed fluctuation but it seems to coincide with accessory usage ie;cooling fan or blower. I have not experienced the tranny problem. I hope this helps.
I own a 1995 MPV 4WD and the transmission housing corroded where it sits on the cross-member and broke away. This was due to the contact of the cast aluminum housing with the steel cross-member. It cost $902.00 to repair. Has anyone had a similar problem and received any satisfaction from Mazda?
Has anyone else noticed that the sliding door handles are really hard to open? My 5 year old has to pull on it with all his might several times to get it open. My mother, who is kind of petite had problems openning it, and myself, I have to give a good pull to get it open. I took it to the dealer and they said they adjusted it, but I did not notice a difference. Anyone else having this problem?
My left sliding door is extremely hard for my kids to open, 7 & 10 yrs old. I'll be taking the MPV in for servicing in a couple of weeks. I'll definitely have them take a look at it. Hopefullly, this will not be a nagging problem.
1 year and 21,000k later we're still loving that van. Some early veterans may recall my wife got dinged in rear bumper 3 days after picking it up. That was repaired but we have had some paint peel which we should be getting redone one of these days soon.
None of the problems that I've just scanned through have bothered us.
Only annoyance is the sunglass holder keeps flipping down. Any real quick solutions for that?
Should be taking in for service one of these days but we never seem to have time.
Our dealer wound up replacing the sunglass holder twice. Seems to be OK now. We also had to get the CD changer replaced - it's on order now. The changer stops changing after playing an entire CD (seems like when it gets warm, the mechanism hangs up). I think I'll have the inside rear view mirror changed, too - it's really distorted in the night position. Other than these little niggling things, no problems in 3000 miles so far.
To MPV owner/s who also have the 6-cd stereo with or w/o the RSES features: I have noticed lately that on cold morning starts, the AM Radio has no reception (just static noise) and so are the lower frequency FM stations (below 92.5 hertz). After the cabin and system temp is warmed up, turn off the engine and the system, then re-start stereo then everything works great. Am I the only one having this problem? I have not read this type of problem in any of the previous posts. Will appreciate any response.
I drive my MPV for business. Have about 30K since March,2000. Haven't had any real problems, but made the mistake of driving the Honda. Way better driving, in my opinion. Ford engine scares me, sounds at idle bother me, but otherwise, I am very happy with the design/funtionality of it. Looks great also. I get about 22MPG Hwy.
Like other posts have stated, the drivers side sliding door is sometimes hard to open. My 6-year old is only successful about 50% of the time.
Of more concern to me is that the same door often does not close properly and leaves the "door ajar" light and courtesy lights on. This happens whenever my 6-year old shuts the door and frequently when I do. I am always worried that I will forget to check and my battery will be run down.
Soon, I will be calling the dealer about these items.
Has anyone else experienced the problem with the "door ajar" light.
have seen posts about sliding doors and kids recently. i have 17k km in my mpv so far and no problems with the sliding doors.
i also drive my dads 93 plymouth voyager one out of 4 times, ride once a month as passenger in my friends 96 dodge caravan to our company hq meetings, and up until 4 months ago had a nissan axxess which had the lightest sliding doors in any van. still, even in the nissan axxesss i feel the doors should not be left to children below 8 to close by themselves.
as a safety practice, i ALWAYS seat my 5 year old and other young passengers FIRST, check if they are properly belted, then check to make sure no arms or legs are in the way.
I also WATCH carefully that no body members are sticking when sliding the doors, and being the one closing the door means i can stop midway (and have done so several times) if something suddenly sticks out. i guess id also be one of those who would NOT feel safe about power sliding doors either.
I two have had trouble with my eyeglass holder, mostly when the weather is cold. I have had my Saphire Blue van for about 9mos and love and enjoy it more each day. My 86 year old mother loves the hand holds over each door for ease on entry and exit. Of course my two Greyhounds think it is their van and let me drive it to and from work and chuffer them on weekends.
I have LX with 6 disk changer. Right now it is about -10°C outside and I didn't notice your problem with radio. The van stays all day outside by the office so it gets pretty cold by the time I have to drive home and both radio and CD player work just fine. I'd check yours at the dealer...

as a safety practice, i ALWAYS seat my 5 year old and other young passengers FIRST, check if they are properly belted, then check to make sure no arms or legs are in the way.
I also WATCH carefully that no body members are sticking when sliding the doors, and being the one closing the door means i can stop midway (and have done so several times) if something suddenly sticks out. i guess id also be one of those who would NOT feel safe about power sliding doors either.
thanks
