I have had this for sale since December due to coming up traveling plans and can't take the car with me. Now I have to deal with this disaster. I can't sell my car knowing that it has a problem.
Have you had any luck at all on yours? Is the problem identified and resolved? Do you know if there is a lawsuit of some kind going on at the present time? Recalls?
Any info is greatly appreciated
Thanks.
How long did it take to get the issue resolved through BAR? Is this only in California? I am about to google them! Thanks for the info.
Read through the horror stories on some of these forums (personnaly - trans, water pump, 3 windows, sunroof, one caliper, tie rod and some other minor issues) and you want to have a warranty. Mine now has 109,000 miles and it has generally been a good vehicle, but I now consider it a grenade (the sunroof just died - this one was only 2 years old) I will drive until it kicks.
2004 Land Rover Freelander HSE
It's a know problem with the Freelander.
I`VE BEEN READING THE FORUMS SINCE BOUGHT MY SE3 ON MARCH, 2004, BUT NEVER POSTED A MESSAGE. MY SE3 HAS NOW 110,000 MILES IN 5 YEARS, AND AT THE BEGINNING I WAS A LITTLE AMAZED ON HOW BAD THE VEHICLE RESULTED FOR OTHERS EVEN THOSE WITH LOW MILLEAGE FREELANDERS. THE COOLANT LEAKING PROBLEM WOULD ALWAYS PERSIST FOREVER AND EVER, THATS BECAUSE THE PARTS RELATED ARE PLASTIC MADE, THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME EVERY 30,000 TO 60,000 MILES, THAT INCLUDES THE EXPANSION TANK, THERMOSTAT AND MAYBE A HOSE, THE REPAIR COST ROUNDED $150 TO $350. BUT, RECENTLY I HAD SOME SEVERE COOLANT LEAKING FROM THE WATER PUMP AND THE LOWER RADIATOR HOSE. FOR NOW, THE LEAKING HAS STOPPED.
ORIGINAL BRAKE PADS FADES TOO FAST, IT HAD COST ME A PAIR OF NEW FRONT ROTORS. BEFORE THE NEW ROTORS, EVERY 5,000 TO 10,000 MILES I HAD TO REPLACE THE PADS. BUY BRANDS LIKE PAGID OR MINTEX THAT HAD LASTED LONGER. I ALSO THINK THE ORIGINAL ROTORS WEARED OUT TOO FAST, SO I FOUND A PAIR OF AFTERMARKET BREMBO ROTORS AND AFTER THAT THE PADS HAS LASTED MUCH LONGER, COST $200.
AMONG OTHER THINGS I'VE CHANGED ARE: THE SHOCKS (AROUND $1,000 AND THE ORIGINALS LASTED THROUGH 80,000 MILES), AND ENGINE MOUNT, A SUSPENSION BAR, A COIL (SPARK PLUG), GAS FILTER, FEW TIMES THE COOLANT TANK /THERMOSTAT, THE MUFFLER BROKE AND WELDED IT, AND OF COURSE THE COMMON MAINTENANCE LIKE THE BELTS, ETC...
THE REASON THAT PUSHED ME TO WRITE, IS THAT I JUST TOOK OUT THE SUV FROM THE SHOP A MONTH AGO WITH THE LOWER RADIATOR HOSE AND WATER PUMP PROBLEM TO STOP THE COOLANT LEAKING PROBLEM, AND THEN THE ENGINE STARTED TO FLOOD WITH NO POWER FEEDBACK. THE SHOP TOLD ME IT WAS THE UPPER INTAKE MANIFOLD (PLENUM CHAMBER?) THAT COST AROUND $1,200 WITHOUT LABOR. IM SO FRUSTRATED, MY SE3 GAVE ME GREAT SERVICE BEFORE THE 100,000 MARK, AND AFTER THAT HAS BEEN A PROBLEM AFTER PROBLEM. AT 120,000 GOES THE BELTS CHANGING FOR ABOUT $1,500-$2,000 AND THAT WOULD BREAK MY ACCOUNTS. IF AFTER THE INTAKE REPLACEMENT IT DOESN`T FAILS SO FREQUENTLY, I`LL KEEP IT, BUT IF ANOTHER THING THING EXPLODES RIGHT AWAY I`LL SELL IT. HOPE MY EXPERIENCE COULD HELP SOMEONE. ATT. BETOC
Best day I ever had was the day I traded in my 2004 Freelander for a 2009 Subaru Forester. I lost a ton of money on the Freelander, but I bet I would have lost more on repairs if I had kept it. I keep telling people to just dump it and not hold their breath on a class action law suit. You'll sleep better.
I also had the coolant leak issue. I tried working with my dealer and LR North America. Their goals were to keep me confused and for me to buy an LR3. They won't help you. Just keep telling others about your experience with Land Rover -- you can revel the day they go out of business. I'm seeing fewer and fewer of these pieces of junk here on the Eastside of Seattle.
It started out with a simple issue with the door locks. No big thing. Replaced under warranty. Then it started jumping into a downhill descent type four wheel drive mode when you slowed down. It also would stall and just quit while driving. Turned out to be a pump and compression issue. Replaced. Then we had all kinds of issues with the maintenance department and coolant. It kept leaking and you could smell it in the heater. They attempted to fix it several times with no luck. One time they left a rag wrapped around a hose next to the fan belt. Another time they forgot to fix the water resevoir which is why I took it in to begin with. However, they did contact me and say my sunroof was not working and they would fix it. Guess what, when I picked it up it was still broken!! And they had forgotten to put water back into it.
Eventually the heads started making a noise and then valves are gone. It is out of warranty. When I found someone to work on it he found other issues. The valves are gone and the cam shaft is broken. THANKS LAND ROVER!!
I am now in the hole close to $4000 and the vehicle is worth less. I am also still financing it so I have no recourse but to pay to fix it or watch it rust away while writing checks on it.
Run from Land Rover! The products are inferior and the company could care less.
This is happening to too many Freelander owners to be merely coincidental (as other posts here have insinuated). Good luck!

I actually thought about getting a new LR2 but have completely soured on the entire Land Rover line. It is sad that such a great name has been reduced to this.
Do what I did and just trade it in for a dependable car. I lost tons of money, but at least it stopped the bleeding. I sleep better now to boot!
replaced and fan belt, too. Constant squeaking of front brakes and a new set at around 15-16K miles, these were replaced once more with no improvement. The truck only had 10K+ miles on her when i bought it, as I think it was a previous service loaner. Also going on it was the sunroof, again replaced. Issues with the tranny, serviced. Then finally the big one-the dealer told me that my engine was gone and that it would have to be replaced. They held on to it for 2 months and still no engine. After over 3+ months in a rental, at their expense, they finally gave me one of their service loaners, brand new LR2. I liked that truck so much that I was able to swing the payment on one. I guess that I got lucky because the dealer was willing to give me $14K for my Freelander, which was still sitting on their lot waiting for an engine. I ended up eating about $2500 on the deal for the LR2 but it was probably the best alternative at the time for a new vehicle, which I bought about 1 year later in Feb 2008. That truck sat for almost 5 months before an engine was found for it. Of course instead of sending the car to auction, it was put back on their lot for resale, it only had about 21K miles on it. They did find someone else to buy this truck because I have seen it around while driving and in for repairs when my LR2 is in for service. I really love my truck and so far have been pretty fortunate as it is mostly Volvo and not Tata on the inside. I was just glad to finally be rid of that truck.
If you had any integrity whatsoever, you would furnish me a similarly used better designed LR model as a swap, I won't be holding my breath.
Just chiming in with this overheating issue. My HSE has been in the shop at Land Rover-Hornburg (L.A.) 3 times in the last month. On first visit was told I needed a new radiator (clogged and leaking) and a new hose which I paid for to the tune of $1700. Temperature gage light came on within two days of receiving my HSE back. Returned to Hornburg two more additional times to only get it back and within two days have the same thing happen. Here I am now three days later after receiving it the last time with the same issue. The service manager alerted me to this issue after I paid for my radiator and this is how I found all of you in these forums and many more on numerous websites, youtube.com, etc. Will be calling Land Rover North America again tomorrow as well as the lawyer posted here - Howard A. Gutman (his info at 2nd link below), the BBB, Bureau of Automotive Repair, the NHTSA, etc., etc., etc....

Too bad the Engines all fail and there is nothing you can do about it. landrover doesn't have the B@#$s to issua na egine recall. the hille descent comes on at it s own free will when you try to slow down. CV boots, rotors, pads, drive components, bets all wear out or break repeatedly and WAY before the recommended service intervals.
i haven't seen anyone else mention this one yet.. The windows all stopped working on my wifes '03. they make agrinding noise and won't move up or down. The worst part is that they won't just stay shut. landrover quoted me $250 each. when its raining sometimes the rear windows fall down an inch or two if you hit a bump. The kids get wet in the back seat. They don't go up on their own so you have to pull over, open the door and pull them up with a hand on wither side of the glass....
this is so fun! i am getting my car to the point where everything has the illusion of being in working order then selling it back to a LR dealership. They can suck it.
these guys are going to be out of a job soon...
I received an irritating letter in the mail yesterday from Linda Julyan from Land Rover Bellevue. She wants me to buy a new Land Rover from them. The letter starts:
"Greetings from all of us at our dealership! In a few days you will have driven your 2004 Land Rover for five full years."
Do they really think that any Freelander has lasted for 5 years, or that anyone who suffered for this long would be foolish enough to buy another one? They should keep track of the people that they went out of their way not to help. This way, they can significantly save on postage and trees.
It's like a knife in the side, but still kinda funny. Let 'em waste the postage! :lemon: :lemon:

To end the story, as soon as it left the shop I put up for sale, and sold it for $ 5500.00. Thank God. Landrovers you can go to hell.
Good luck.
