On the way to work Monday the navigation system went out, it had the black screen with the Infiniti logo and a "DISC ERROR" message across the bottom. It was dead all through Monday and Tuesday and mysteriously started working again this morning (Wednesday).
I have become the victim of so many jokes at work that it is pitiful. This thing cost 15-20 thousand more than any of my co-workers cars yet mine is the one in the shop all the time.
I recommend turning off your caps lock as people tend to ignore messages containing all caps. Sparse and well placed emphasis will attract attention in an appealing manner.

We drove all 4 vehicles and initially the QX wasn't on the list. Wife shot down the Denali because it looked too much like a Yukon/Tahoe for the price. We both shot down the Escalade because we felt the price was too high for the features you get. Already had a Navigator and there was NO WAY we were getting another Ford product. The Toyotas and Lexus are underpowered, smaller and in my opinion overpriced. We were just about to settle for an 05 Tahoe(with nav system) when we passed by the infiniti dealer. We were both impressed with the features of the QX vs the price. MSRP on an 05 Yukon with sunroof, nav and autoride suspension was 48,300. MSRP on an 05 QX with sunroof (nav is standard) was 50K. Seemed like a no brainer to us. The QX has reverse parking system with camera, auto liftgate DVD nav AND 6 disc changer. All the GM stuff made you give up the 6 disc for the DVD. Combine that with a 4/60K warranty instead of 4/60 (we drive ALOT) and it was worth the gamble despite the reported problems I' read about. It can't be any worse that what we had with the 03 NAV. Which by the way has a HORRIBLE resale value part of which is due to them being sold at 10K below MSRP. I'll keep everyone posted on any problems.
Enjoy!!!
The latest brake fix is being advertised as the fix to end all fixes. But so were all the other fixes and they didn't work.
The roof-headliner rattles and vibrations have tsb fixes but they don't work either. My wife and I are tired of riding in our friend's Suburbans and Odysseys that are much older than our infiniti and noticing how the dvd players don't bounce all over the place and rattle constantly. And the qx56 is marketed as a luxury vehicle. These are just a few of the problems, but the shaking and rattling is so irritating.
The saddest part is the infiniti service. The first few times we brought it in they returned it with lines like " the brakes are better than new," and "the roof is 100% solid." Now they bounce back and forth from "it is that way by design" to "can we try an experimental fix on your roof and if it works we will use it on our other qx56s?"
I have rarely brought a vehicle into the dealer to have problems fixed and I have never had to do it twice. infiniti has had my vehicle 5 times and still won't / can't get it right or even close. I have currently waited 2 weeks for them to make an appointment with a dts (district technical specialist) to look at it. And once the appointment is made who know how much longer until the appointment date. It is aggravating.
If anyone is thinking that the quirks have been worked out on the 2005s they're wrong. The infiniti rep said mine, referring to the headliner, "shakes less than the 2005s." My opinion, after driving a 2005 for 1 week during one of the patch up jobs, is that the 2005s shake and rattle less than the 2004s but still far from what a luxury marketed vehicle should. I could have the same ride from a 1999 Suburban for $45,000 less.
Seems Im in the same boat as many others. I have approximately 4800 miles and my brakes started acting up. Took it to the dealer overnight and I was told that the rotors were not replaced but brushed per Infiniti's instructions. I had heard of the brake problems (and asked the salesman) before I purchased but was assured that it wasn't a widespread problem and if it became a problem Infiniti backs its cars 100%. Now im starting to wonder if they have the end-all fix, why are they only grinding rotors? I have yet to pick up my qx56 and im wondering if I should demand that they replace the rotors? My wife drives the qx primarily and with a 7 month old in the car Im not much for risk taking anymore. Anyone have any suggestions or is this common practice?
> cracked windshield 1st cold day when using the defroster
> fuel pump that constantly had a load humming noise
> 3 of 4 front lenses (2 headlite, 1 marker lite) had water inside
> flood in front passenger floor every time it rained
> 3 sensors changed
> door lock mechanism replaced
> trans slipped constantly
> stuck in 4x4 every now & then
> radio replaced 3 times (1 time at 15K mi)
and not to mention that great Chevy loaner program....the local BUS stop...
all this for a $48,000 truck.....NO LOANER w/ all these problems..oh no wait, I got a loaner once. a Malibu they scraped together, was filthy dirty had 90,000 miles on it and smoked inside and outside w/ CO fumes....
couldnt wait to trade the Z71 in for the QX56. love the Q and we're on our 3rd Infiniti and the service is always excellent....a hard lesson I learned w/ Chevy....check out your dealer's service dept before buying from them....
I thought about the Caddy for a minute, but it was another GM product and your had to pay about $20,000 more (w/tax) than the QX56 to get the same options...The QX was a no brainer....and you get a free loaner....my brother in law has 2 Escalades and has same service issues I had with the Z71...and sometimes he doesnt even get a loaner.what a joke $68,000 for a Caddy and no loaner, typcial GM BS....BUY THE QX and save the $$$ and the headaches you are sure to get with the domestic SUV's
I hope the best for you, and am happy I got rid of my QX56 after owning for about 8 months!
Let me tell you what to expect.
What's bad:
Headliner vibrates, moves up and down (DVD's almost impossible to watch)
Brakes are horrible (replaced twice). When I noticed that third brake job is coming I decided to trade it (I feel really bad for potential buyer).
Gas milege 13MPG (it's expected)
Uses Premium gas only to get extra 5-10 horsepower. What kind of idiot at Nissan decided to use premium gas for 6000 lb. SUV)
Rattles and shakes going over rough roads.
Steering wheel shakes and moves left/right going over bad roads. Use both hands only.
Navigation periodically locks.
Window Up/Down modules were replaced.
Sunroof leeking (fixed sort of).
Very load roar under hard acceleration (infiniti says it's sporty????)
Noise from transfer case when using anything but 2WD mode. Now I understand why on test driver dealer asked to keep car in 2WD mode. Try AUTO or 4WD and you notice much more noise coming into cabine.
On chrome wheels I see rust coming thru.
Third row not split.
Resale value is horrible.
Paint had some particles (not smooth).
Cheap quality is everywhere (except wood and leather).
Basically this is Nissan Armada with chrome wheels, standard navigation, leather and four pieces of wood (doors and console).
What's good:
Good value.
Excellent powertrain
Lot's of second row room
Backup camera
Good service
Good warranty (you will need it for sure)
The sad part is that I've had only Nissan/Infinitis since 1995. Three Maxima's, FX45 and QX56.
First four were excellent, quality vehicles - maybe becuse they were built in Japan.
I traded FX(year old) because I needed more room. But QX56........ well, buy it and you will know.
Just do me a favor, before you buy QX, go and drive Toyota Sequoia, or LandCruiser.
Infiniti lost loyal customer because of this vehicle - I think it says a lot.
Good luck to all of you and enjoy whatever you decide to buy.
I have literally had my Feb.04 built over the rivers and through the woods, along with some beach 4-wheeling for miles. I also use it to tow a 6000lb boat from time to time. I don't have the luxury of another kick around vehicle, so I drive this thing everyday and sometimes all day. I too have had some very minor rattles that were fixed whenever it was time to change the oil (G35x was always the loaner for the repair) and when the QX came back, it was as if nothing was ever wrong to begin with. I just started to feel the brake jutter a couple of weeks ago. It goes in for the 11,500 this Monday and my dealer said they will take care of it then.
No desire to trade this one! But, I would be sick if I had the problems others have had writing in this forum.
Good luck!
Thanks alot,
Mishee
There was some chatter on the "freshalloy.com" website about mis-adjusted or over/under sensitive switches located on the underside on the passenger seat. I don't think that they are adjustable, so it needs to be replaced.
Quote from the QX-56 Shop Manual:
"Occupant Classification System Precaution -
Replace control unit and passenger front seat cushion as an assembly."
You may be waiting for a front passenger seat. Good Luck!
Let us know how you do.
Infiniti Spruces Up its Dealerships After 15 Years (Inside Line)
Maybe some of that money will trickle over to engineering and QC....
Steve, Host
Here goes:
1) the sunroof shade was ripped across the middle
2) the wood grain trim on the passenger door was MISSING
3) the mud flaps were cracked
4) the middle row seat warmer buttons were missing
5) there was only half a tank of gas in the truck
6) there were "make $5000 a week flyers in the truck (NO JOKE)
AND FINALLY 7) the SUV squeeked!!! :lemon:
Ok so my point still continues"
We picked up the QX56 in February of this year 2005 and it has been back to the service department 14 times since then. We were told that there is nothing wrong with this truck, that all these problems are normal, and that if we wanted we had the option of calling our service department whenever we have a problem with the brakes (shaking and rattling) and that they would pick the truck up at our home.
By the way, the reason for the shaking and rattling is that they are using cheaper, SMALLER rotors, so that Infiniti can sell more of their defective vehicles to the public, hoping that no one will speak up about it. We have had the brakes repaired 4 times!
Also, our center console (you know, the one that holds the dvd player)completely detached itself from the inside roof of the truck and was hanging by a piece of plastic. Thank God no one was in the truck!!!!
By the way, that is what this junk is made of......PLASTIC!!! If I wanted anything plastic I would have bought some Tupperware!!! :P
And they (Infiniti) think that the general public that buys/leases their vehicles are stupid. Because if they didn't think this, they wouldn't try to make excuses like "that's normal" or "we'll pick it up at your house" or "Recall? Why would there be a recall?" or whatever excuse they can come up with.
I have tried speaking with our salesman, the owner of the dealership, headquarters, but apparently they are defective too!!!!
PLEASE DO NOT PURCHASE INFINITI PRODUCTS! Or better yet instead of me telling you what to do...make an educated decision and research a vehicle before you get suckered like the rest of us. GOOD LUCK!
Think of driving of driving in mountainous roads. Downhill braking too frequently and the brakes overheat and lose their stopping power. That is the reason for lower transmission gears so the engine acts like a brake and drag on your forward and backward motion so you don't overuse the brakes.
I am thinking about whether to purchase a Navigator or QX56. I am definitely leaning to the Navigator although I am a Nissan fanatic. Currently driving a 2001 Pathfinder with no problems.
Thank you to you all who post your QX56 issues and resolution. Please keep it up because the Nissan fanatic in me is still hoping the issues are resolved before I have no choice but to purchase the Navigator.
Thanks for update on your problems.
What year is your QX and where is your dealership that fixed your problems?
What were all of your problems? You did not mention the frequent and seemingly unfixable problematic brakes on the QX even though Infiniti promised fixes since June 2004. You did mention the squeaks and rattles but what was causing them?
Most importantly, what did they do to solve the problem for good? Can you be as detailed as possible?
You are giving me hope for the QX as I am hessitant about the Navigator. Also, I read the Navigator forum and problems are not as numerous as the QX56. Not to say that there will not be but I am in a position of choosing the lesser of two evils. The Navigator being the lesser for now b/c of all the QX56 recurring unfixable complaints.
Thanks in advance.
PS..- I have 29,000 miles on the car. This model infiniti is NOT a :lemon:
You figured us out, Snowbound. I paid $55k so I could drive a $35k FX35 for a few days every other month while my QX is being serviced. I just love the challenge of squishing my kids three car seats across the back seat of that no-frills, little FX. And oh, how I love that hour and a half round trip to the dealer.
But you know, hmm... maybe there are a few problems with the QX? Maybe the brakes really are wearing down every few months for some owners. Just because you got lucky doesn't mean everyone with problems is "out to get Infiniti."
I just got every brake related part replaced for the fifth time. Maybe the fifth time is the charm?? Let's hope!
P.S. In PA, Nissan just did a buy back on all their full size vehicles (Titan, Armada, QX). New Jersey should be soon to follow suit!
Holla for a Dolla!!!!
I had my brake's replaced over a week ago, and I still feel like something is holding the car back, my mpg has gone down to about 12.1 mpg, (used to be 14.9), and it feels like my car is all over the road with some pulling to the left. The techs checked it out last week right after the brake kit was installed because I told them something was wrong and of course they are telling me nothing is wrong. Anybody else having these issues?
Anyway, we had a blast with the thing in the sand and water. I came home after the week and pressure wash the hell out of it. That was a year ago and no problems since (outside some sand under the plastic cover on the running boards. I say go for it and have a blast!
I have only had problems with those damn brakes. Hopefully someone at Infiniti will get it fixed. Everything else in this vehicle is perfect. It rides (obviously) much better than the Hummers I used to own and is a lot cheaper to operate (reasons not to own Hummers).
Anyway mud and snow are no problem, I have found through experience this last winter to use the Auto mode of four wheel drive, it is without a doubt smarter than me regarding lost wheel traction. I experimented in manual and auto 4x4 modes and when not needing low range I just put it into auto 4x4 and drive. It is cool hearing and feeling the drive line do its thing when the going gets rough.
I am glad to hear of your adventures, and your family's satisfaction with your QX56, but I'm also glad to hear that I no longer have to deal with the Infiniti models! I also know 4 other locals that have gotten rid of their QX's due to the same brake problems.
I hope you don't end up eating your words in the long run, and I hope your family continues to stay safe. You are one of the few without hard feelings through experience!
I am happy to report that my dealer answered the call with my QX56 brakes as well. I was in for a normal service (LOF and such) and advised the service writer that my brakes were again pulsing. He immediately looked on their inventory listing and notified me that they had the latest corrective action parts sets in. I advised him to go ahead witht he installation.
Well long story short I just completed a 1400 mile trip and my brakes are the greatest. I have never been so pleased. The first 200 miles or so were a lot of extra effort (as someone had reported too) but after that they really do stop forward motion with the slightest of pressure. They put all new pads on all four wheels and larger and thicker rotors on the front. I inquired as to the root cause and they stated something about poor heat disipation on the originals and the newer rotor design and pad media will disipate heat much better. Well for now I am completely satisfied with the fix. I will report back in 5000 miles with a longer term experience.
Took the car to Kelly Infiniti in Danvers, Ma. this morning, met with my service advisor. He said they would shave the rotors to fix the problem short term, because of a lack of parts available to the dealers. They are coming in sporadically, and they never know when or how many are coming.
Took off in my I35 loaner, they called me back 4 hours later, said they rec'd enough parts in the delivery this a.m. to fix mine, and I drove off.
Bottom line: GREAT TRUCK, GREAT SERVICE!! Even Lexus has issues with their cars (I had an ES and 3 GS's in 6 years). But it's how they deal with it that matters. These guys couldn't have been any more accomodating, almost Lexus like. I drive off thinking "that was easy", and will forget in a couple of days that there was even a problem.
People comment on how beautiful the truck is. Took 2 other couples out Sat. night, and they each remarked how comfortable and smooth it was for a big truck. That coming from a Landcruiser and M500 owner.
No complaints here...just praise...
I've read all the reviews both here and yahoo on the QX, Escalade and the Lexus LX 470. Almost every reviewer loves their Escalades and some of them are on their third one. Very very few bad reports.
The QX has many many absolute horror stories. I'm not only warned off the QX ... I'm now very negative on Infinity and Nissan in general. This is too bad as I was very excited about the QX at first. I was truly thinking it was the newest and best of the three.
The Lexus may be dated but at least it works. The Escalade may be just an American behemoth but their owners rave about them and they look pretty good.
It sure pays to dig deep when researching vehicle purchases. Thank goodness for Edmonds and Yahoo people who report on their vehicles. I would never have known the truth by reading the professional reviews. Obviously they are not interested in the real dope. Evidently they are beholden to the manufacturers.
