Just a reminder that every Thursday you can join the Subaru Crew for a chat session from 6-7pm PT/9-10pm ET. Stop in to talk about Subaru or just to say hello! Either way, I hope to see you there!
We had a slow start, but things really picked up and our Moderator, Bob, threw in some fun trivia to keep things interesting. I was on a roll until he started asking questions about things from before my time! ;-)
About that teaser, "Lucky", as she was christened, is in the shop getting a new power moonroof! :-) Some key features:
* ASC Model 750 * 17"x30" single glass moonroof, pretty big * one touch open, one touch close * closes automatically when keys removed! * sun shade * glass is tinted * complete new headliner installed, and nicer * over head light moved back * $895 installed * lifetime warranty
Pretty cool, eh? That puts my total cost at $19k plus tax, still not $20 grand even after taxes. Not bad for AWD, ABS, 6CD+tape, alloys, moonroof, cruise, keyless, etc.
They also carry wheelskins, so I ordered that. I'll sew it on the steering wheel myself. I have one and they are excellent. I had bought a cheap one and it was so inferior that we just took it off. Never settle for the cheap ones, lesson learned.
I'll share pics and more details in the Mods thread once we pick it up, should be ready tomorrow at 5pm.
Did you have a sunroof installed in your new legecy . If so how did it go .The reason I ask is that the way the roof above the the drivers seat is like 2 tiered . The factory sunroofs ,the glass is shaped like it to match . Very interested how it came out .
er, um, well I come home for lunch ya know! Then back home around 5:30. So, yes, assuming I am able to do so without recrimination, I head straight for Town Hall!!
sorry but I don't think anyone's looking at "Cleaning" lately....
In 2 weeks I'll finally have the time to give the GT the full fat wash and wax it needs. But I was thinking of giving the engine bay a once over too. Without calling in a detailer, can you all recommend any products or procedures for grooming the hamsters?
Karen- Speedy is doing much better now thank you. He must be a member of the Major League Baseball Players Assoc since it's apparently okay for him to take steroids :-)
Loosh: I idle the engine til barely warm. Baggie the alternator to keep it dry (sort of). Spray full strength SimpleGreen all over everywhere that's dirty, let it sit a few minutes, then hose it out (garden hose nozzle, that is... fire hose might be considered overkill) Recommend do all this before the exterior wash & wax, for obvious reasons.
Thanks to a willing acquiaintance recently bereft of his 1K break-in......
Well. Hmmmm. I want one. And at the same time, I am still quite pleased with my GT and the modest $$ I have put into her.....
We all know what the interior is like etc, so I will just give you my thoughts after having been allowed to wring this WRB sedan out on roads I know quite well.- 1st off, you better be holding on when this thing gets to 3K, because holy moly it goes like a scalded cat. The fastest car I've driven, fer sure. And it is a surprise the 1st time, since it really is a little pokey down low. then BAM boost all the way to 7K. Rilly rilly fun. Thank you SOA also for giving American buyers a decent swaybar. While body lean is still quite present in hard cornering, there is now enough bar to tuck the tail in smartly and with authority under throttle-lift corner entry. On OEM RE-92s the car was a lot more fun to toss around than the stock GC8 or BD. Steering was precise and well-weighted, although less communicative than the previous Impreza (and for that matter Legacy) set-up. All in all though I was very imprezed, and look forward to finding some sort of subie turbo in my future.
Getting back into my GT....well it sure is slower!! Ah well. But the Brullen makes up for some of it anyway. And the AGX+S-03PPs+Tower brace makes for a purty sweet handling Subie. So I wasn't toooooo disappointed. ;')
Local guy is selling STi V5 struts with GC coil-overs (using Eibachs) for $600.....hmmmmmm.........
Moonroof is nice. Fit looks factory, you really couldn't tell. It starts just at the top of the hump on the roof, so it's a little farther back than most single roofs, but serves the front and back seats.
They indeed replaced the entire headliner, bonus is that it's nicer. Padded and cloth covered now, instead of carboard-with-lint (which is class standard, not just a Subaru thing).
It doesn't seem bigger than my 15"x30" pop up, maybe because of the hardware around it, so the opening on my pop up is the same size or bigger.
The overhead was moved back, so that serves the back seat only now. The map lights work in front, so that's OK. They put a panel with 4 buttons on the space behind the map lights.
It has 4 buttons. Open does just that. Press quickly and release and it's one touch open, cool. Hold it and you control how far it goes. The next button is Close, which works the same way. Then is Vent, which also works the same way, one touch or hold it. The 4th button programs what happens when you remove the key from the ignition. It's normally green, and will close the moonroof, whether it is tilted or open. Press the button, and it glows red, telling you that it will not close automatically (say, to vent fresh air in a garage).
Very nifty, better controls than any factory roof I have ever heard of, personally.
They had a brand new Camry on the lot, with the Monroney. They said they do more new cars from dealers than owner cars.
Bonus - they sell wheelskins and ordered one for me for $35, no shipping.
Ms. juice is very happy, says the car "has it all now". My feelings exactly.
When they installed the moonroof did they have to remove the roof rails on the roof . Or does the legecy not have them . I ask because I'm very interested for my outback.
When I inquired about the moonroof (same model as juice's I believe) on our Outback, they said that they would trim the roof rails back a bit. I believe they also would move the dome light back, just as juice's.
Just one question the pics couldn't answer...where did you have your moonroof installed? From your pics, they did a real nice job. The price seems right too. I'm really itching to get one for my Forester.
After playing with it for a while, some more cool features I've figured out. If you have it open, and press and release vent, it will close it all the way, then open the vent. If the vent is open (tilted), and you press the Open button once, it'll lower and go all the way back, and open.
Smart. So no matter what you want, you only have to press one button a single time to get it.
Mark: no rails on the Legacy L. But my Forester had them. At that time, they cut them shorter and reinstalled the strips for an extra $70. But man, I should have gotten this nifty power moonroof!
The shop was Adler & Mandell in Rockville, MD. They are ASC certified, and basically an upholstery shop. The headliner, for example, looks perfect. You can tell that is their specialty.
My pop-up was $300 (plus $70 to cut the rails short). The power roof was $900.
Last night while I was out for dinner I saw a Wintergreen Legacy L like yours but with WRX OEM wheels. It looked great in a sort of understated as opposed to flashy way. I normally have my digital in the car but not last night. I would have taken a pic of the Legacy w/the WRX wheels for you. There is also a 00'/01' OB wagon in my neighborhood with all the cladding painted the midnight granite pearl color to match the non-cladded upper part. The first time I saw it I did a doubletake. I thought it was a raised L model until I looked at it longer. I'll try and get pics.
I think I'll give them a call this Monday. I'll be sure to mention you as a reference (maybe they'll have something in their advertising budget for you).
I got into the pool to catch a little girl named Aurora as she was born at home on thursday! So we slightly beat ms. juice and mini juice, but I wish y'all the best birth you can dream of. the stats: Aurora Rose Volk July 11, 2002 9# 10 oz. 21 1/4" at home, in a birth tub, 7.5 hour labor, midwife attending. cheers, steve-v santa cruz
Steve: Brooke (14 months now) was 9 pounds, 11 ounces and right about 21 inches long too. We were quite shocked to see her that big; everyone expected a 7 pounder.
Congrats to you & your wife. Hope you're getting SOME sleep!
I was reading my first issue of Subaru Drive this weekend (bought and '02 Forester in May), when I saw the "Bear letter," in which you describe the lineage of bear-related license plates your vehicles have had. I got so excited that one of the Crew was in the mag that I told my wife. Big mistake!! She just shook her head and sighed. Now she thinks that I'm spending too much time on the Internet!
NO WAY I'm I gonna bring up the whole "Juice is in Business Week" thing!
jim_loves_cars Jul 15, 2002 12:41pm Yeah, I made sure I let the crew know I was in that issue. I had sent Drive a picture with that letter, but they opted to not print it. Nevertheless, I'm still proud!

What company do you get Sube rentals from in M.B.?
We're driving down this weekend, and a British co-worker and his wife are flying down for a few days to sample the Southeast.
-Dennis
I've gotten them twice in MB, both times with NC tags on them. Probably dropped off from Wilmington or Raleigh-Durham.
