Juice and Dennis - thank you.

While being by my sister in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn, every block had a large selection of Legacy/Outback models from over the years. I couldn't believe how many Outback's and Legacy's there were! I also saw my first Forester XS. Nice looking vehicle.

    Mark,

What part of Park Slope? That's where I grew up -- on Lincoln Place between 8th and 7th Ave.

There are quite a few Subarus in that area. I never really noticed it until I owned one!

I've been talking with our friends at i-club about setting up another little drive in the woods of PA in a month or so. I hope you'll be in the frame of mind to go out with us at that time.

I remember the Pine Barrens trip just a few days after Sept. 11. I watched the Towers burning from my office, while paisan was only a few blocks away running for his life. It felt good being with friends and driving the Scooby's (ok, Troopah too.:-))

The good news: Just received my Subaru "Best of Both Worlds" Sweepstakes flyer inside a junk mail blurb for the 2003 Subaru.

The bad news: I have to go to Balboa Subaru in San Diego to test drive the Forester and get a free ice-blended drink from Coffee Bean!

Thanks, but there's a Jacob's Java just down the street... bit closer than the 1500+ miles between me & San Diego!

    (grin)
    Cheers!

sounds like it would be nice. I'll keep an eye on the i-club board, as well as here.

Ken- My sister is on 6th ave between 4th and 5th. I never noticed before how many Subaru's are in the neighborhood-unbelievable!

Well spoke to an un-names Subaru insider about the testdrive of the new 2.5GT.

    Here are their impressions:

o Sport Shifter is nice, not as good as a some of the other ones out there (it auto-upshifts rather than bounces off the rev limiter)

o Fit and finish is excellent

o Suspension is significantly upgraded from previous GT and GT limited models

o New rims looks better than the old ones.

That's all I could get out of them.

Nice scoop, Mike. I'm curious how much more the sport shift helps wring out engine power. Any comments around that?

If anyone knows of anyone who might be interested, my Aunt's SVX is available earlier than expected and I need to sell the XT6. Here is what I have invested already...

    I'm in NYC.
Asking $2500 which is how much I spent on it.

    $1000 purchase price
$700 for the Clutch, Flywheel resurface etc.
$600 for the Air-Suspension conversion to coil overs
$125 for the Rack and Pinion
    $50 for the PS Pump
    $100 full tune-up
$125 for the Rear diffy (not installed yet)
    $400 for new mid-pipe + Catalytic
    Plus I'm including:

    $50 extra PS Pump
    $100 extra pods
    $150 extra set of rims

So I have invested so far: $3400 Plus the labor to install a lot of it. Also if someone wants the WRX rims we can negotiate them into the price as well.

If my daughter were 16, that may have been her first car. I'm afraid the timing is off by a dozen years or so. What about eBay?

We're getting by nicely. The wife could not withstand the heat on the 4th, and we actually had to leave early, during the fireworks. She's still half effaced (that's when the Cervix thins out to make way for the baby), but has not progressed over the last week. It's anybody's guess, literally.

Lasik? Sounds good. I know Hutch did that recently. I'm definitely thinking about it. Contacts are a royal pain, I'm just tired of them.

Will be the last shot. I figure I rather sell it to someone who really wants it before going the ebay route.

I last posted before leaving work on Wednesday, June 26th. Something wasn't right - I felt sluggish and hot. Went home, ate a few bites of dinner & fell into bed. Next morning the 'upchucking' occured along with the chills, shakes, severe body aches, fever - 24 hr bug time.

Well, 24 went on 36, and the fever topped 104' F. Dehydration time. Dreams and reality were beginning to merge as Beth looked for someone to watch Emily, control the fever with cold baths and ice blankets, consult with doctors, etc. I finally gave in to a 20 minute ride to the hospital ER at 7pm Friday night. After some basic test and a bag of IV drip, I got a diagnosis at 2am to go home and ride it out - just a virus.

Sat & Sun was more of the same. A human temperature cycling machine. 101 to 104+ in waves. Wild dreams, cold baths, tons more Advil, Tylenol & antacids. Beth on the phone demanding that the covering Dr. of our Med Group come in off of the Golf course and admit me to the hospital, and their refusal. Sunday night a theory by one of them that I might have Lyme or other tick borne illness, as I 'live' in the garden when not at work. Beth fills the prescription, but I can hardly stomach it.

Monday I finally get to see a covering GP (my reg Dr. is on vacation). The fever is down a bit, and he talks of Lyme. Most of the 'push and hit' exams come up normal until he hits my pelvis on the right side. Bingo. A ball of fire archs up from my hip area to my rib cage center. An Ultrasound "STAT" in this town takes two days to schedule, but after some yelling, gets done the next morning. I am feeling a little better and we stop for some breakfast. First real food in almost 6 days. Head home and Beth takes a nap. She is exhausted also. While I am puttering around the kitchen the call comes in that the results show something - please come in immediately. I left Beth sleeping and hopped into the SUBARU (see, we got there eventually....). Stony/sludge/infected/bloated Gallbladder. Report to the hospital in 1 hr to begin IV antibiotics.

Wednesday, 7/3, they did endoscopy to remove a stone in the common duct (a truly horrible and exhausting experience), then surgery to get the offending organ. They let me out earlier today, althought I am still running a fever. In total, probably the worst 9 days of my life. So now two weeks of rest before returning to IBM. Did anybody notice I was gone????

on Juice being the star example in a Business Week article on the US auto industry? Apparently he was SERIOUSLY considering somethign other than a Subaru! But thank goodness Subaru came through and kept him in the fold.

dated July 15, 2002. Article: "Autos: A New Industry", towards the bottom. Refers to A.J. Teixeira of Washington D.C., a tech support specialist. Of course, it could just be a coincidence -- there have to be a dozen A.J. Teixeira's in the D.C. phone book, right? But this A.J. Teixeira did buy a Legacy recently...hmmm.

I was interviewed for a Wallstreet Journal article on the Forester, but I never bothered to see if they used my quote. Maybe I'll go to the library and see.

that maybe Juice has a new baby? Even with the holiday weekend, it seems like he's not around much. I know he said his wife was often uncomfortable, so they weren't going to go far, if anywhere. Juice!? Oh, Juice?!

Finally had an opportunity to get out on a relatively long trip... 650+/- miles to Baker City OR & back for wife's HS reunion...got a pleasantly surprising 27.5mpg both down & back, at let's say 75 half the time and 70 the other half. Nice ride, a few twisties on I-84 SB btw. Pendleton & LaGrande, and a good time was had by all. Grace had a chance to show off her bald hubby to her ex-fiance with the pony tail :)

Couldn't bear to look at all the dead bugs on the nose of the car, so took advantage of a slow day otherwise and finally got around to a wash/clay/wax job... No, I didn't wax the wheels... I'm slightly OCD, but I'm not nuts :)

    Cheers!

    Juice- Congrats on the quote!

Steve- Ouch! That story certainly doesn't give me much confidence in the medical community's ability to make what should have been an easy diagnosis.

Speaking of gas mileage- I drove to western NC to visit the folks over the weekend and got a personal best of 31.3mpg which enabled me to drive 400 miles without the low fuel light coming on!

Holy cow, Steve, glad you feel better.

That was my evil twin in Business Week. Just kidding.

So I've been in Autoweek, Drive, and now Business Week. I've officially used up my 15 minutes. ;-)

Had a great weekend, 4 days of fun with my daughter and wife, highlighted by a boat trip on Saturday, down the Potomac. My company picnic was Friday, too, but you could feel the budget cuts - no freebies at the door this year (last year every guest got T-shirts).

Dang, Frank, you already had me beat and now you've stretched the lead. I have only managed 30.4mpg.

    -juice

PS Baby: you guys will know within 24 hours, at most.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Anyone know if the print copy of Business Week will have that article? If so, I'll get a copy.

Thanks for the well wishes and positive thoughts.

It was still a pretty rough weekend, but this morning I awoke to feeling, for the first time in two weeks, like I had finally 'turned the corner'. For anyone interested in rapid weight loss, I highly recommend this plan. Total aversion to food works wonders. Haven't been this light in 10 years!

For someone who is often referred to as the 'Energizer Bunny', I feel totally out of my element. Worst part is the 10 day driving restriction!

Wow, Steve, sorry to hear about your infected gallbladder. Sounds like that was a terrible experience for you and Beth. Glad you’re on the road to recovery.

juice, Yes, you’re quoted in the printed copy of Business Week. I was visiting my in-laws in Boston when I read the article. If you can wait a while, I’ll ask them to save the issue for you.

How much are the royalties? ;-) Seriously though, how did the author contact you?

On the trip to Boston and return, I got 28.4mpg in the 00 GT wagon, averaging 70-75mph (save Connecticut, at 55-60mph). We left Boston at 4am on Sunday. Once they stopped fighting over pillows; the kids settled down and slept. Around 8am (IIRC), we crossed the George Washington Bridge, looked south to admire Manhattan’s skyline, and were surprised when we could barely make out the island. Smoke from the Canadian forest fires created a haze that almost swallowed Manhattan. The smoke followed us south; Sunday afternoon, the haze painted the Maryland sky orange. Quite eerie.

The early morning departure made for a pleasant drive in the GT, even through the normally congested sections of 95 in CT and NYC.

    Cheers,

Bob: Business Week knows that I'm a seasoned industry analyst and...

Man, even I think that sounds like nonsense! I can't fool myself!

PRLady from Edmunds.com put me in touch with them. They called me to get a quote relating to their article, plus some opinions. It was a nice conversation.

She's actually put me in touch with a few folks. There is a thread right here on Edmunds. Usually they are looking for something very specific, in my case it was shopping across several categories (SUV, van, car, wagon). They might look for people who bought Orange cars in June, stuff like that.

How's that huge road contruction project in Boston going? Is it worse than our Mixing Bowl?

    -juice
  • miksmimiksmi Member Posts: 1,246
The "Big Dig", or Central Artery/Tunnel project, is amazingly complicated, more so than the Mixing Bowl project on I95 in No. Virginia. I was mostly in the burbs but went downtown twice. I rode the T (subway) to my first Fenway Pahk game (Sox beat the Blue Jays; it was 105 degrees on the field). I drove the GT to the Science Museum in Cambridge, dodging Big Dig construction - thank goodness on a weekend. The Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge, the widest cable-stayed bridge in the world, is gorgeous.

My son enjoyed the museum, especially the exhibit on, what else, the Big Dig. A map of a few blocks around the museum shows the Gordian knot of utilities moved: Western Union (telegraph!), brine (!) ducts, steam, telco, storm drain, sanitary sewage, sewage/storm drain, fresh water, AC power, DC (!) power (street car anachronism?). What are juice and I talking about? http://www.bigdig.com/ PBS has a show on July 24.

Was it really "overwhelming" to pick the Legacy or did they swap out "no brainer". ;-)
