I don't know if you remember me. I posted my experience in early september in which I was back and forth with you in regards to the HP of the SE Camry vs. Accord and what the Engineers of both dealerships Honda and Toyota stated in common. Here is what we got for everyone else:
SE Navigation Package, includes perforated leather-trimmed interior; touch-screen DVD navigation system with JBL Premium AM/FM single-disc CD player, eight speakers in six locations and FM diversity reception; manually retractable rear sunshade; and trunk-mounted cargo net. VSC and Side Airbag Package, includes Vehicle Stability Control with Traction Control and Brake Assist; and driver and front passenger front seat-mounted side airbags and front and rear side curtain airbags. Color-keyed rear spoiler with integrated center stop lamp. Heated front seats and Power-adjustable pedals. Aluminum wheels w/high performance all season tires. Auto-dimming rear view mirror w/compass, five piece carpeted floor matting (includes trunk matting). VIP RS3200 Plus security system, wheel locks and mud guards. Almost forgot, because Toyota wrote the brocures stating that the Navigation has a cassette player and when we received the first vehicle it did not include it, the dealership promised us that they will special order another Nav. system that has the cassette player included at no charge if this second vehicle does not come with it.
You guys will not believe the price before any taxes, rebates, etc.: $26,530.00. Also, the dealership has a coupon for $250.00 in which I will present to them at time of delievery and we are entitled to what ever incentives and rebates that Toyota offers at that time. The only down side is we have to wait till December for vehicle to be "Preferenced/Built". I don't believe that anyone can find a better deal than this.
My 03 LE V6 doesn't have too many options. I think the only option that it has is the JBL sound system. And no mine doesn't have side curtain airbags or VSC. I wanted the v6 more than the optional stuff and since I was on a budget ~ 22K I had to go easy on the options. But you are right, if I had to buy agian I definitely would get side curtain airbags. In fact I think it should be standard like front airbags.
P.S. hey why are you dissing my alloy wheels? I think they look ok.
look OK, but look at the wheels on the latest avalon, not that great
I got the le v6 for 22k with all fees, no options just the floor mats, jbl..but on delivery came with cargonet, trunk mat and the fake wood which I like..LOL, makes it seems like XLE camry
Your right, we just have different prferences. Thats cool. personally i cannot stand cloth seats, I get stuck on them now since I am used to riding on leather for my last few cars. I have had no problem with any auto climate system that I have run into. usaully the only thing I change is the temp up and down a few degrees.
I may be wierd, but my biggest emphasis on choicing a car is the interior look and feel. i figure that is where I will be most of the time, not sitting on the trunk or the hood as I drive. I have a few interior pet peeves. Exposed cupholders, parking brake in center console, cloth interiors, cheap headliners. I know these are nitpicky, but when I see these things in 30K cars it turns me off. I think the interior should be clean and functional and comfortable. The wood on the xle seems fine to me, for the price. If you want real wood, then pay 40-50K for a real luxury car.
Again, alpha, I have to disagree with you on the xle vs es comparison. Yes the es has some nicer features but when you look at its a car with 4 wheels to go from point a to point b, IMHO the camry xle is 80% of the es with a much cheaper price tag. If you think the es is worth the extra bucks, great, I just did not. In fact a friend that rode with me recently made the comment (not prompted by me at all) " This is as nice as a Lexus."
My goals when buying were comfort and ride quality and roominess along with quality and dependability. The camry is perfect for these. I have had friends with big suv's comment on how roomy the camry is on the inside. The camry is more roomy and bigger trunk than my 96 sable, yet it is shorter and easier to park.
To me the two disadvantages of the SE are the ride and the ugly stainless trim. I test drove an SE and did not like it. I have heard others on these boards complain of the ride quality on the SE. If you want a tight ride than go for the SE, but I was looking for butter smooth. I also found the leather in the xle nicer too. I got the impression from the SE that it was a bmw wannabe without really spending the money or effort on matching the bmw.
Not knocking anyone here. We each have our preferences and goals when buying a car. The camry has a lot of good choices to meet many different needs and desires. Hopefully there is something for everyone.
Great post. Thanks. Id be willing to be that you are in the majority when you state your preferences and why you choose the Camry- for its quality interior materials/appearance and butter smooth ride. Thankfully, Toyota has chosen not to neglect those who look for a little more roll control and sportiness, and thus, we have the SE with a good amt. of standard features and better handling and braking (and V6 acceleration) than the rest of the Camry line.
To those who have the 02/03 LE V6 - I did not mean to come across as "dissing" your alloys, I just feel that it was an odd design. I'm guessing that I wasnt alone, because Toyota has changed the design of the 04 LE V6 standard 15 inch alloy, and to me, it is a bit more agressive, visually interesting, and an improvement.
I know we've just entered the 04 model year, but I wonder whats in store for the 05 revisions. Last time around, I liked the changes to the exterior (of the 2000 Camry) and the equipment levels increased a bit as well. Time will tell. ~alpha
If Toyota sticks with the 5 year plan for major redesign, 2007 probably the year. 1982-1986, 1987-1991, 1992-1996, 1997-2001, 2002-present. Hope to see a hybrid version.
But what I was talking about was the mid-generation "freshening" that Toyota does on nearly all its mainstream models, which occurs in the 4th model year of that generation. For this Camry, the 4th model year would be 05. (02, 03, 04, 05, 06).
For the last generation, Toyota made the grille more attractive, increased tire sizes, moved to the jewel-like taillamps, added some content to most of the trim lines, and the 4 cylinders gained a few hp and torque, as well as better emissions ratings.
I just purchased a 04 Camry LE 4 cyl. with automatic, ABS brakes & floormats in Atlanta, GA for $17,808 (after the $750 rebate) plus $1,297.59 7% state sales tax. That breaks down to $17,288 for the car (after the rebate), $499 documentary fee & $21 title fee (plus $1,297.59 sales tax for a total of $19,105.59 OTD).
This came out to $1,010 less than Edmunds TMV of $19,317 for my area including Edmunds' listed destination charge of $515.
Let me guess, you bought from Atlanta toyota? They were the only one that I contacted that had a $499 doc fee.
When I bought my 4 cyl xle in May they matched another dealers low price but then wanted to add the $499 doc fee. When i explained that the other dealers price included their doc fee, they suddenly stopped returning my emails. So much for Atlanta toyota offering the best prices. I bought from the other dealer, whos slogan is going to be number 1. I am sure you know who that is.
"This came out to $1,010 less than Edmunds TMV of $19,317". Thats why I do not even look at TMV. I always just look at invoice price. For some reason in our area, the 4 cyl is around $900 less than invoice, plus rebates. This pricing is also refelected on carsdirect.
Sorry I made the wrong guess. Not sure if I talked to Team or not, but of the 4 or 5 I contacted, Stone Mountain had by far the lowest price. Hope you enjoy your new camry.
I am interested in buying a Camry LE 2003. Our local dealer only has one that has all the options that I wanted. I want side air bag. The price I got from the dealer is a little bit higher than what I've expected... Here is the invoice that he faxed to me:
MFG Base Price 17191.00 Total factory options: 688 (ABS --$258, side curtain airbags -- $430) Total port options (Pre delivery services -- $25, vehicle fueling -- $7.8, mud guards -- $75, carpet mat set -- $119): 226 Delivery / Processing/ Handling: 525 T.D.A. 218 M.A.F. 275 2% Holdback MSRP 397 PIO holdback 20 1% Finance reserve MSRP 198
Total: 19738 Sale price is: 19938 (he wants 200 over invoice)
The out of door price for this car is: 19704.
This car has 200 miles on it already. The color is Phatom gray pearl
Can anyone tell me if it is a good deal? The reason I am interested in 2003 is that I can have 1000 rebate plus 400 college graduate cash back. Otherwise, I'll go after a 2004 Camry.
But they're charging you for gas? Wow. Also, in my region, 2004 Camrys are available, since Friday, with $750 cash back, so its not that big a difference. Maybe you should shop around a bit? That way you wont have a year old car right off the bat.....
Not sure about your region, but in the SE in May i was able to order an 03 XLE 4 cyl with the options I wanted and I paid $300 below edmunds listed invoice price, minus a 1K rebate. I never even saw the invoice at the dealer. All of the extra stuff on the invoice is fluff, except for the delivery fee. The way I calculated what I wanted to pay was I looked at edmunds invoice price for my base vehicle and added options at invoice and delivery charge. This came to 22.3K. A local dealer had a build your own and make an offer website. I did that and offered 22K and I told the dealer that my offer included any doc fee he charged and I would get the rebate. he agreed and ordered me the car, just like I wanted it.
I agree with alpha, shop around and do not get hung up with finding the exact car. Toyota has a good system for letting the dealers look at inventory for their region. If they cannot find your car in the region, it is simple enough to order it. Mine took about 6 weeks.
I've never bought a new car before. I read the rest messages on this board and learned that most new cars' mileage is under 100 miles. Is 200 miles too high for a new car?
Thank you for your suggestions, Alpha and Masspector. It seems the dealers in my area don't have much flexibility. It's my first new car and I don't have any experience.
As per many individuals I spoke with, nearly all of them got their vehicles with about 4-6 miles. Some had no more than 10 miles. I would not accept a vehicle with more than 10 miles, it leaves questions. Were they using that vehicle for test drives or a demo car from another dealership. Mia9, I would not have accepted a car with 200 miles, sounds like a demo. A demo vehicle, almost everyone hammers the vehicle during test drives. Bottom line, when you go to pick up your vehicle, you should look it over with a fine tooth comb, because once you sign acceptance of delivery and drive off, its yours. We did this for our 04 SE V6, it had fine scratches on the clear coat, interior color was wrong and the Nav. system did not have the cassette as promised. We refused delivery, and to compensate us for the inconvenience the dealership is selling us the newly ordered car at their cost. Also, it had 11 miles on it, and as per Toyota of California the vehicle departed from Kentucky with 2 miles on the odometer. So it was driven approx. 9 miles at the dealership. I pointed all these infractions to the general manager who is now dealing directly with us.
I have an offer for a Demo car which has 10,000 miles. The offer is $22,000.00 no fees. Is this a good price. The car was supposedly driven by two salesmen. It appears to be in excellent condition but my question is why isn't this car considered to be a certified vehicle as opposed to a Demo? are Demo really worth the money? I would appreciate any assistance on this one.
A dealer is offering to sell a 2003 Camry LE V6 Auto ( Sunroof, CD Changer, Keyless entry ) with almost 12000 miles on it for $17650. Is that a good price?
10000 miles on a demo I would probably not buy, what is the actual discount you're getting? (what would the same car cost brand new with no fees?) demos can be abused during test drives to test the engine, brakes etc.
Need a big favor. What is the best way to shop for a new 2004 Camry LE 4 Cyl Automatic with ABS, security upgrade, mat and mud guards. Should I send an email to every dealership and ask for quote. Any suggestion? I am in Oklahoma. Seems to me the price in OK is always higher than other places. I would not mind going to KS, TX or even MO at all. Any good deal among these states. Please advice.
finding a 4 cylinder camry with ABS is not that easy...check the dealer's web sites online, by now they should have a website with the prices, try to find the the dealership that has your car first(or go to toyota.com and find the dealerships)..BTW mudguards don't come on a camry, a dealer can install it afterwards...I guess you can always just order it from kentucky with the exact setup you want
find the invoice of the car(not MSRP) with the options you want at a site like costco.com, auto services and offer no more than $300 above invoice it would help your negotiation if the car is on the lot and not be a special order
Does anyone here know something about advertising fee? I look through most of the posts here and found out most people didn't pay the advertising fee.
I saw the dealer's invoice which has the advertising fee. I asked him to waive it and he told me that he cannot do it because he paid this to Toyota and I need to pay him back.
Why there is such a big difference between dealer's invoice and the invoice I found from Edmund or Kelly blue book?
In NJ, the only Camry LE 4s on the lot are with ABS and floormats, or ABS and the sunroof upgrade package. So, ABS is easy or hard to find, depending on where you are. The LE 4 auto/ABS/floormats stickers for about $20,880. Go to carsdirect for appropriate pricing in your area.
I'm currently looking to buy Toyota Camry LE 2004 4cyl. This is the quote I got recently.
Base MSRP $20425 Option A0 Extra Mile Option Package A $970 Option P4 Vehicle Shield Package $349
Total MSRP : $21744
One dealer quoted me : $19770 + TTL Other dealer quoted me : $19979 + TTL with "few" oil changes and tire rotation
I live in Texas so there is no rebate right now on 2004's. There is 0% financing for 36months. Could some of y'all advise on these deal ???? Thanks a bunch.
PS. I appreciate everyone who participate here. I think it's great that some of you share these info to help someone like me(who knows nothing about buying cars). Thanks.
Are ok, but not great... My best advice would be to go to Carsdirect.com, and price the Camry with features that you want. Carsdirect will ask for your zipcode, which will provide you with an idea of what deals are available in your area. Best of luck.
That sounds kind of high. I agree with alpha, the dealer add ons are worthless. An LE auto 4cyl in the SE is somewhere between 17-17.5K. Even excluding the Southeast $750 rebate I get 18.7K in SE on carsdirect. Follow alpha's advice and use carsdirect to get a feel for your market. You should be able to beat CD's price by a few hundred dollars if you negotiate well.
I would like to buy a 03 Camry LE or SE, but even the lowest offer I got from local dealer is above the invoice. The car has air bag, ABS, invoice - rebate = 18497, my offer is 18870.
Why can't I have a good deal? I am at OK. where should I go for a cheap Camry?
Not sure why, but not including rebates 4 cyl camrys in Ga have been $900 less than invoice. Most of this can be accounted for with the set fee and tda being knocked of the invoice. Why not try to get a cheap flight to Ga and then ship the car back. I would think total cost would be around 1K for that, but if u can save 2-3K its worth it.
I am also looking for 2004 Camry LE with ABS, side curtain + security system upgrade. I am in OK too. Seems to me Toyota dealers here would not sell invoice price. Let me know that you find. I'll give you an update also on what I find.
I live in NC and bought a new 2003 Camry SE 2.4 L manual in Birmingham, AL. It came with ABS, Einki 5-spoke Alum. wheels, and plush mats. All for only $18,900. The car is great but the buying experience at Hoover Toyota was a mini series of incompetence on the part of the dealership. Too long a story for me to tell you guys, but Mother Toyota did hear from me.
Installed a K&N airfilter on it and an earth grounding system. Runs even better now.
It is not easy for find good deal on camrys in the south. I shopped around in both Louisana and Mississippi for over one month and still could not get a good deal. I finally decided to pay money to save time. My final for LE with side airbag, ABS, etc for $20,105 (everything included). It is a 2003 car. If I go for a 2004, I won't be able to get the 1000 rebate.
My experience is go for an American car in the south.
I am not able to buy a 03 camry below invoice. The camry dealers just don't budge. Also, they want to sell me all kind of trash, such as window etch... I ended up with a 04 Accord EX, with $100 below the invoice, 1.9 APR. The Honda dealers are much better, and they didn't ask me to buy any other option.
brazilgoal- Excellent- your car sounds great, and so does your deal! What was MSRP, if you dont mind me asking... and which color did you get!
mia9- Time is money, so you probably DID save yourself some money buy negotiating a reasonable price in a shorter time than a phenomenal price over a long time. Im sure you'll be happy with your Camry. Again, if you dont mind me asking, what was MSRP? And which color did you get!!
xifeng- You purchased an outstanding vehicle. The Accord is a tremendous value and a precision machine. Unfortunately, the South/Southeast Toyota region is NOTORIOUS for attempting to rip people off with extra cost, useless items, such underbody coating, rustproofing, etching, etc. Thankfully, dealers in other regions are more reasonable.
my MSRP is $21,504. The invoice the dealer showed to me is $19738. The selling price is 19,891. Then I got the $1000 rebate after everything is taxed. But I paid $153 over invoice. Most of the dealers charge me $300 over their invoice in the south. Their invoice including TDA, etc which is not included in Edmunds TMV.
In today's Dallas Morning News, there is an ad from Toyota Vandergriff in Arlington, Texas( suburb of Dallas). It says "save $3,000 off MSRP on '04 Camrys in stock. We've got 100 Camrys in stock." Unless it is a trick, it sounds like they have some good deals. This dealership was not open when I bought my 2003 Avalon in July and a used 2001 Camry for my son in August 2002 so I have no personal experience with them. However, the Oklahoma shoppers who are having trouble getting deals might want to give them a call and see if the prices are for real.
I have to agree, atlanta usually has pretty good pricing. Team toyota in atlanta is advertising on radio this weekend for le around 16,900. I assume that is auto with no options. Not sure if it is an 03 or 04.
alpha--i bought from a SET dealer and had no problem with the etching, etc. I agree with you that SET sometimes forces options on in stock units, I have seen that before. Like on the highlander they order all of them with the towing prep pkg. On my camry, i had to order it anyway, so they did not try to add any of the junk and even in F&I they did not try to sell me anything extra at all. Just filled out the loan app, that was preapproved, odo statement and bill of sale. In and out in less than an hour.
CarsDirect and Atlanta Toyota both come back with a price of $22175 ($25310 list)for a 4cyl xle with the premium plus package. My local dealer in NJ won't come close to that price. Are these 2 dealers legit with their prices, or will there be suprises? Any other choices for "great" deals?
Are you REALLY going all the way to Atlanta to get a CAMRY? They sell 400,000 of these vehicles, and there are PLENTY of Toyota dealerships in NJ- where are you located? I'd recommend Dayton Toyota in South Brunswick. Who is your "local" Toyota dealer (really, in NJ, thats a relative term, as there are SOOO MANY in most areas).
I got a black Camry with no rear spoiler but with a sunroof instead. Beautiful car. Got for $2,500 under MSRP for $18,900.. The dearship had thougth they ordered an auto matic trans. but got a mual which was what I wanted and they what they did not want - therefore a great deal for me.
Just did a speed test with it coming back from Greensboro (I-40)yesterday. The speed governor would not let me take it beyond 120 mph. Drove very well, but just don't that fast in traffic!
The prices are legit, but you are right there are some gotchas to look out for.
First, CD is not actually a dealer. They will take your order and then try to find the car at a local dealer that they are set up to do business with. One problem with this is that CD lets you create cars on paper that do not actually exist on any lots. The problem with CD is that I could not get a definative fixed price from them. I saw the price on the website, but when i called them (three different times) to see if this price included a doc fee or SET fee or TDA, I got three different answers and prices.
As far as Atlanta Toyota goes, they do not have the best reputation in Atlanta. I am not slamming them as I have never done business with them, but the rumor in the area is that they are high pressure and use low balls alot. I did email them a few times on my camry xle purchase in April. They met my lowest price offer but then wanted to add a $499 doc fee (the highest I saw in the area). When i emailed them back and said that my price included the other dealers doc fee, i never heard back. They also kept wanting me to come in to talk as opposed to email.
Treading lightly here as not to violate the member agreement, but there is another dealership in Atlanta near the real big piece of granite we have here (if you get my drift). This is where i ended up buying. If you go to their website, they have a pop up that advertises build your own car and then make a price offer. I did this. The invoice pricing tracked edmunds exactly. My car came to 22.3K invoice. I offered 22K and I get the 1K rebate and they accepted. I expected some tricks like Atlanta toyota had played with the doc fee,etc...but when i went in to order the car the price was the same. the only issue was that the salesman said by law they had to include the $379 doc fee for everyone, so he lowered my price by $379. So i ended up at 22k + TTL - 1K rebate. This was all handled through the dealerships internet dept.

it's a plain jane camry-- nothing special...
if anything, i'd go at end of month if there's no real hurry-- but offering a little over invoice seems reasonable. $200 over invoice, right?
or, just read what people are paying by reading posts here, and offer right around that price.
it isn't calculus. am i nuts?
find the invoice of the car(not MSRP) with the options you want at a site like costco.com, auto services and offer no more than $300 above invoice
it would help your negotiation if the car is on the lot and not be a special order
I saw the dealer's invoice which has the advertising fee. I asked him to waive it and he told me that he cannot do it because he paid this to Toyota and I need to pay him back.
Why there is such a big difference between dealer's invoice and the invoice I found from Edmund or Kelly blue book?
Thanks for your suggestions.

Base MSRP $20425
Option A0 Extra Mile Option Package A $970
Option P4 Vehicle Shield Package $349
Total MSRP : $21744
One dealer quoted me : $19770 + TTL
Other dealer quoted me : $19979 + TTL with "few" oil changes and tire rotation
I live in Texas so there is no rebate right now on 2004's. There is 0% financing for 36months. Could some of y'all advise on these deal ???? Thanks a bunch.
PS. I appreciate everyone who participate here. I think it's great that some of you share these info to help someone like me(who knows nothing about buying cars). Thanks.
My best advice would be to go to Carsdirect.com, and price the Camry with features that you want. Carsdirect will ask for your zipcode, which will provide you with an idea of what deals are available in your area. Best of luck.

PS- those "option package" sound like BS to me.
for Juanda - no not after sales tax and title tags..the price 19770 + TTL. What do you think of this price with the options I mentioned?
Thanks again for any input.
Why can't I have a good deal? I am at OK. where should I go for a cheap Camry?
A guy told me he is going to buy it 2000 lower than invioce.
Buy a same car at Oklahoma city, I need to pay $3000 more.
I want to live at Georgia!
Installed a K&N airfilter on it and an earth grounding system. Runs even better now.
I love "my car".
My experience is go for an American car in the south.
I ended up with a 04 Accord EX, with $100 below the invoice, 1.9 APR. The Honda dealers are much better, and they didn't ask me to buy any other option.
mia9- Time is money, so you probably DID save yourself some money buy negotiating a reasonable price in a shorter time than a phenomenal price over a long time.

Thanks for your input. I'll contact the dealer in Arlington.
alpha--i bought from a SET dealer and had no problem with the etching, etc.

Just did a speed test with it coming back from Greensboro (I-40)yesterday. The speed governor would not let me take it beyond 120 mph. Drove very well, but just don't that fast in traffic!
I love "my car"
