I compared Edmunds TMV price ($18745)with Cars Direct price ($19570) or $825 difference for an Auto LE, w HI,BE, AB, N1. I offered a local dealer $19,000 for the exact car and he let me walk (He wanted 19,600).

Are there dealers who can work with Edmunds TMV price? Thanks for any info you might have?
  • jlabarrejlabarre Member Posts: 1
I purchased a LE with a 4 banger, auto, sunroof, abs, JBL sound and some cargo stuff for $18,200. The sticker was for $22,030. The dealer was offering $700 under invoice (19,900) and there is a $1000 rebate. I tried to offer $500 less because I really wanted a stick and was shot down, but got a good deal anyway. Plus I got free tires for life and 4% financing. This deal had to be completed by July 31st. This makes up for the lousy dealer experience from my last toyota (99 Rav-4).

Anybody has information about rebate after Aug 4th? Do I need to wait until then?
  • toledo19toledo19 Member Posts: 119
A dealer in N. Calif is running an ad today for the LE with AT at 16,688 after 1K rebate. This is for the Autos at 20,360 MSRP. The funny thing is it says" "50 at this price". Guess they want to unload these cars!

    "LE with AT at 16,688"
Is this the selling price or the out of door price?
  • toledo19toledo19 Member Posts: 119
I thought we agreed those were the only prices we would quote. :)

Toyota's web site now announcing Summer clearance event, expiring 9/2/03. I look for Toyota to be clearing out the 03's through October!
  • mackabeemackabee Member Posts: 4,709
You should be able to get both the rebate and the 2.9% at the dealer. Our region offers both to "sign and drive" customers which means your score qualifies you and no late payments on any accounts whatsover. Clean as a whistle.

I've been trying to negotiate a deal to buy a 2003 Camry XLE in KY, only to have the dealer tell me at the point where we are talking about a "walkout" price on the vehicle that he must charge me a 2% surcharge known as a Toyota Dealership Association surcharge to reimburse Toyota for national sales advertising! I've never heard of such! Has anyone had to pay this to buy a Camry in 2003? I can't believe that Toyota would seemingly give a cash rebate to its customers and then take it away, in the same breath, by charging its customers for the advertising promoting the same sales incentives!

    Help please!!
  • ral2167ral2167 Member Posts: 791
yes-- i paid TDA-- in ohio-- thats one thing i don't like about toyota compared to honda.... i suppose you can always walk... others here have said they didnt pay TDA.. i suppose it's how skilled you are and how much the dealer wants your sale....
  • daddydawgdaddydawg Member Posts: 3
I've told the dealer that it's a dealbreaker for me, and I mean it. Since Toyota will have different incentives starting tomorrow, the sales rep will have a "new" figure for me tomorrow. He better pray the "new" figure doesn't include TDA or other bogus markups!!
  • elvis333elvis333 Member Posts: 2
I've been negotiating with several dealers on a new Toyota Camry LE with ABS. I got one dealer down to 17500. Do you guys think that the new incentives will be better than the currently offered ones? Do you think this price is good (it includes all but tags). Thanks
  • daddydawgdaddydawg Member Posts: 3
you may wait to finalize the deal then, based upon rebates available tomorrow.
  • elvis333elvis333 Member Posts: 2
I hope the rebates increase tomorrow daddydawg. I read a post where they said that Toyota has started advertising a "summer clearance" which had new deals through the first week in Sept 03. I could not find that anywhere, has anyone else seen a promotion like this
  • toledo19toledo19 Member Posts: 119
I saw it at the toyota web site.

Remained the same for Camry in my region for August.

Ps.prices for 04 Camry to remain the same with the exception of the V6 SE which goes up a whopping $50.00! Yes! 50 bucks! Oh what a feeling!

All of the '04 Camrys went up by $30? Will there be incentives on the '04? What changes, if any, on the LE or XLE with the I4 auto?

check out alpha01's exhaustive list of features in the Toyota Camry thread. he pretty much details the 04 models.

    Which is better?

A few newspaper ads in southern california:

LE Auto 10 at this price (The car I'm considering buying)
           MSRP 20544
           INV 18383
Sale Price 16745 (1638 below INV)
       Rebate -750
       You pay 15995

Cars Direct sale price is $1025 below INV

LE Manual all 25 at this price
               MSRP 19530
                INV 17528
Sale Price 15348 ($2180 below INV)
         Rebate -1000
           You Pay 14348

I have yet to request quotes from dealers over the net. Is it worth the time to request quotes and haggle with internet managers, or do the cars in the Saturday ads have equal or better prices than what an internet manager offers? Also, a sales guy told me to get the newspaper ad price you have to finance the car, and no matter what your credit rating is, they only give you 9.9%. He said his manager would not do a cash deal (what I'm considering) for the car in the ad (don't they have to honor the ad price regardless of cash deal versus finance deal?). Anyone else hear of this? If I have to finance to get a good price, I'll just pay it off when I get my first statement. Any suggestions would help.
  • mackabeemackabee Member Posts: 4,709
No, the only Camry that went up in price is the SE V6. And that's only by $50.00 dollars, all other Camrys (LE, XLE) base MSRP's stayed the same. Beginning September 3rd freight goes up to $515.00 on passenger cars and $540 I believe on trucks.

Be carefull, I bet there are stipulations (in fine print no doubt), that if you pay the car off right away you incur a penalty charge...I bet it is as much as $2500 or more. If it sounds to good to be true it likely is. I'd stay away from this dealer. I opted using Edmunds to query out internet pricing from dealers in my area. Over a week or so I got competitive quotes...more or less close to each other. The only mistake I made was going to a dealer who failed to provide an internet quote...after 2 hours of haggling they met one of my internet quotes then renegged. I sent the internet dealer an email that night saying I was interested. Essentially we showed up at the dealer paid for the car and left. I was hassle free---I could not believe it. I also felt as though I got a decent price for the area I was in. Good Luck!
  • mackabeemackabee Member Posts: 4,709
Let me guess, you went to the dealer that didn't provide you a quote to try to beat the quotes the internet dealers gave you.

I've actually had "internet" dealers out here quote higher prices than the ads. When I point it out, they say, "OK, I'll match that price". Go with the ad prices.

  • andrelaplumeandrelaplume Member Posts: 934
Sorry for the delay...I was not trying to play the non responding dealer against the others...actually the non responding dealer I went to is the dealer who has been servicing our used since we purchased it used from a 3rd part several years ago. In fact, it was their service that sold me on Toyota. When they failed to provide an internet quote I gave them the benefit of the doubt...and first crack at quoting a price. They explained they were just getting their internet sales set up and that was why I never got a quote. I was up front and explained exactly what I wanted, how their service dept had won us over during the past two years and how I hoped we could put a quick deal together. What I got in return was a price $1500 more than internet quotes, no desire to get the color and options I wanted from port and a basic argument that my price was garbage. After two hours of neotiating I left to find a phone call when I returned home matching the internet offer. By now all the internet offers were in and essentially the same price. I took my trade-car back this dealer to dicuss a trade price. After another 2 hours of futile negotiations we finally settled on a price for the trade and were about to sign the papers when a manager appeared of let me know they could not offer me the quoted price for my car. I walked out. On the way out I stopped at service to explain what happened and the fact that I would be purchaing the car elsewhere. I ask if they'd still be interested in servicing my car... too my amazement the service manager repsonded that service is a separate business and he'd love to keep our business. He also could not explain why a loyal service customer would be treated in such a manner...other than some of the salesman and their managers were [non-permissible content removed]-holes and try to pull crap like this all the time. Anyway I called the original internet service manager with the first quote, we met, they quoted a price for my trade, I said I wanted to go home and consider it, I emailed them back asking them to waive some paperwork fees and do a bit better on my trade price. To my surprise I got a nice note back saying the paper work fees would be waived, they'd give me another $300 for my car and also a estimate that it would take 4 - 6 weeks to get my car from port with the exact options I wanted. This all sounded too good to be true but about 5 weeks later we spent about 20 minutes at the dealer, signed all paper work and drove off in our new Camry. The best thing of all was that I ended up with about $1000 more for my tade than the original dealer...and they ended up loosing a sale from a loyal servoce customer.

So in short, my goal was to avoid all human coontact and negotiations...not to try to screw anyone. I gave my dealer the benefit of the doubt and ended up with 4 hours of stress and aggravation...

I am looking to buy a Camry in Delaware. Does anyone have any buying experiences or knowledge they can share? What kind of deals have they gotten? What are the "advertising surcharges"? Thanks in advance.

I had the exact impression with Stevens Creek Toyota in San Jose, CA. A great service Dept., but awful sales staff. I ended up buying an 02 Camry XLE at a Volvo dealership and got great treatment. I find MOST Toyota dealerships to be loaded with pushy, a hole salesmen!

Edmunds is good at estimating a fair price for the car. What you really should do is get a few internet estimates. Edmunds might say a fair price is $17.7 but if you get 4 internet estimates from dealers in your area for $18.5 AND you shop a local few dealers who also offer the car for $18.5 then what do you do....essentially you pay the $18.5 and feel good that you got a good price for your area OR go searching for the car in a more distant area OR you simply opt for a different make/model. To me, I am not so concerned about having the absolute bottom line best price in the country but rather feeling as though I did not pay more than any one else in my particular area. And if the particular price for my area is way out of line with what the car is selling for elsewhere....meaning that I must drive 6 states west to save $1000, then I'll likely just go with another model if that $1000 break the bank (for me)

I think the reason why Saturn is so successful (in addition to their service) is that there is no feeling of buyers remorse...you know you paid the same price as they guy down the street. In fact I believe the mark ups on the Saturns are far greater than the Toyotas and other makes. Why the dealers have not figured this out bewilders me. I guess there are those folks who really enjoy sticking it to the dealer and getting that rare unusually low price...and those saleman who love finding that one sucker that they can take advantage of now and then. You would think just as much money could be made (with less stress for all) if the prices were the same every where for every one.
  • mackabeemackabee Member Posts: 4,709
That would be a perfect world. However, you would then have price fixing which is illegal. Or better yet why doesn't everyone just pay MSRP like at Saturn and be done with it? Believe me, if you paid MSRP for TOYOTA then all the salespeople would be really nice to you!

I am not sure how you can get 1500 rebate. In my area(Chicago), only 1000 program is running. Anyway,I got mine for 19050-1000=18050,with ABS and SUNROOF. If taking out these two options, I probably could get a basice Camry LE with ~17000.
  • socalguysocalguy Member Posts: 6
In southern california the internet quotes I've gotten range from 17800 to 19000 (before rebate) for LE automatic with msrp $20544 (dealer says invoice is 18600, Edmunds INV is 18383). One dealer runs weekend ads for $17488 (before rebate-20 at this price) and another $16995 (before rebate-10 at this price). They each have 150+ on the lot, so I anticipate they'll be running similar ads for a month or so to sell through, and there is a potential for the rebate to increase. I think I'll wait until mid-September to buy. BTW the rebate is 1k until 9/2, not $1500. The holdback on these runs about 400 and I believe there is a factory to dealer incentive of 800. Minus these from INV and you get a dealer cost of 17400. Mackabee, How do these numbers comparee with what you are offering in VA? What is your internet quote for this car at MSRP $20544.

I am in Milwaukee and see a ad. price for 2003LE/auto trans $16595 after $1000 rebate and $400 college rebate, plus dealer offer 10y/100K Mile extend warranty. I just made a internet quote for 03LE with ABS/Moonroof for $18400. I don't know if I should buy it now or wait until middle of Sept. The 1000 rebate will expire at 9/2. So will there be another promotion from factory?

Sale price is 17999.00 on a Camrey LE automatic.

There is a 1000.00 reabate which makes it 16999.00
PLUS another 1000.00 for recent college GRAD.

I am trying to see if I can get the car price down to 17500.00 before rebate.

My mom wants to add 2 dealer installed options...a spoiler and the wood laminate on the dash board. I guesstimate that these will run abou 600.00.

Do you think it is worth haggling to get the car down to 17500.00? 16999.00 for the car is below edmunds TMV, Consumer reports wholesale and Consumer digest invoice price?

And can the deal get much sweeter in September?

Finally my mom really wants the lunar mist metallic (silver).. She does not want any any color! Do you think there will be any left of tha color in Sept? How do actually find out how many of a car a dealer has. They always say they only have 1 left!

    Thanks for any feedback.

Yet Saturn does it and sells cars. I tell you, I bet if Toyota set a more reasonable MSRP and only sold at this price (Like Saturn) just as many cars would be sold.
  • mackabeemackabee Member Posts: 4,709
yeah, they sell cars but not as many as Toyota does. As of last month the Corolla was ahead of the Honda Civic by almost 20,000 units, Camry led the Accord by about 8000 units. We outsold Ford, Chrysler, and Chevy in total passenger car sales. Saturn is nowhere to be seen.

Prices I paid for an LE Automatic w ABS Brakes, upgraded Radio + mats in Mass area $17,599 + 5% tax + $95 processing fee + tag/title + emissions check ($120 in all). MSRP was $21,134, invoice $19,067, manufacturer $1000 off + dealer $468 (max dealer discount was $654, but off higher price)

Other dealers offered $17,499 for same options but jacked up the processing fees to $200, which comes to the same thing. Given these fees are not regulated in Mass they can range between $75 to $200.

There should be no other fees other than this.
  • masspectormasspector Member Posts: 509
Toyota does have one price (MSRP) shopping in Canada. Any word on how that is going? I heard it is going well, but that was over a year ago. Of course that is to be expected with such a monopolistic approach.
  • cmore38wcmore38w Member Posts: 5
In reply to masspector, the one price shopping in Canada (only Quebec and Manitoba) is getting lots of complaints from all consumer associations and the CAA. It appears to be price fixing and Government intervention and/or charges are possible......
  • masspectormasspector Member Posts: 509
There's no appears about it. It is price fixing. At least it is in Canada where the govt cares about their citizens, so maybe it can be changed. In the US, you would be called a bleeding heart liberal for even suggesting that the govt step in in rectify an unfair trade practice.
  • lunarmistlunarmist Member Posts: 41
For message # 459, are you in Eastern or Western Mass ? In Western Mass the price of $17499 is for the MSRP of $20544, but if I drive 20 minutes into Connecticut it becomes $16995.

Is your processing fee the same as a "conveyence fee" ? Here the Conveyence fee is around $170.

Lastly, what does Toyota generally do for incentives after September 2nd on the left over 2003s ? I want a Phantom Gray Pearlwhich all the dealers seem to have a few on their lots.
  • kernatkernat Member Posts: 5
This was in western mass. The MSRP is for a Camry LE w ABS brakes/upgrade 3-in-1 radio/carpets. The lower MSRP is for the standard model.
"Processing fees" are also referred to as doc fees and as I mentioned they are not regulated in Mass. Lowest doc fees in Mass so far is $60 dollars ($95 is more typical, $200 means they are ripping you off). Other than tax, title/tag and emissions (if you want them to do it), you should not be charged anything else.

I think incentives will continue in September, there are still many Toyotas left around. You should get the color you want, most dealers will swap one in for free.

As for Connecticut's price, there should be some fine print (i.e., after $1000 down), else it is a great price.

    Regards,

I'm interested in buying an 03 Camry LE Automatic with side airbags, upgraded stereo, and antilock brakes. When I check both Edmunds and "another" car website, both of them say that the invoice price for this vehicle should be $19289. However, 3 dealers I've worked with in Virginia are telling me that the dealer's cost on this vehicle is anywhere from $300 to $500 higher.

Any idea why there is this difference? I can't get any of the sales people to 'fess up.

Right now the lowest quote I have is for about $18900, which would be $17,900 after the 1,000 rebate. Does that sound like a good deal? I was hoping to get it a little cheaper, especially since it's the end of the year for them. Gosh Toyota salespeople are hard to deal with - LOL!!
