When you compare the 04-06 with the 07, it makes the 07 look MUCH more modern!

Actually, I love the look of the 07. Can't wait till it comes out.

I really want to like this car. I have a 2006 GLS that is high quality throughout.

But the back end looks like it is drooping, to me. I think it is the character line swoopng down under the tail light. And I'm not crazy about blue lighting. Love the front end though. Hope they upgrade the drivetrain soon. Any rumors there?
  • tsgeiseltsgeisel Member Posts: 352
Well, the purple lighting rocks. Driving at night it's not so bright that it's a distraction on the road.

I don't know if the blue they're talking about is the same (I'll be a little disappointed if it is), but if so, that's a good upgrade. Especially if the other console lights are also the same color...

    FUEL ECONOMY from Press Release

    City Highway
    5-speed manual 28 mpg 36 mpg
    4-speed automatic 28 mpg 36 mpg

Well, those numbers are not quite what I had hoped to see . . . BUT, that said, given that Hyundais (including my 2000 Sonata) are a bit thirsty compared to their Japanese counterparts, it *STILL* ain't shabby!
  • snakeweaselsnakeweasel Member Posts: 19,592
Do you have a link to that press release? Hyundais website has no figures nor does the EPA's website.

I found it - it's under Specifications for the 2007 Elantra.

Thanks, but I will still wait to see what pops up on the EPAs website.

I rather like the listed features in one of the press releases. Not only does the 07 seem to come with a fair list of standard equipment, it apparently offers the rear seat center arm-rest, which is something I have always liked in higher end cars: makes traveling in the back a bit more comfy.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Very interesting that the 5-speed and automatic numbers are the same. However, if these hold up (by the EPA) they would substantiate the marketing claim at the '07 Elantra's launch that said there would be a 4 mpg improvement. The numbers for the '06 automatic are 24/32. There is only modest improvement for the 5-speed mpg numbers, however--I think those are 27/35 for the '06?

I'd not use that expression: what if the accusations start to fly that WMDs were hidden in an Elantra trunk?!
  • snakeweaselsnakeweasel Member Posts: 19,592
    I'd not use that expression:

You were never in the service were you?

Sad part is I *WAS* working for a defense contractor right out of college (the first time I went - I'm back again in my 30s).

I was referring to the hidden WMDs in Iraw. That "failed intel" was government work - but not even close!

It was a play on words.
  • snakeweaselsnakeweasel Member Posts: 19,592
We used it a lot when I was in the service.

About WMD that is highly debateable but since it is way off topic I will leave it at that.

Considering that the smaller Civic get's 30/40 with automatic and less with manual transmission, those numbers are not THAT disappointing.
The only disasappointment is th use of a 4 speed automatic instead of 5 speed on the Elantra. Another 2 MPG gained by use of a 5-speed automatic and it would have been close enough to a Civic in mileage while still having a roomier and hopefully a slightly more quiet and comfortable ride than a Civic.
Maybe in 2 or 3 years, there will be a new engine and transmission for the Elantra.
At least this "old" powertrain will be prone to less problems than an all-new design.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
And how about that fuel economy on the '07 Elantra, eh? About as good as that of the smaller, less powerful Accent.

That is a government website. You may be waiting awhile.

Consider that if the fuel economy numbers were not official, Hyundai's website would probably say "Estimated".
  • snakeweaselsnakeweasel Member Posts: 19,592
It does have several 2007 models on it. I compared the EPA site against what the Hyundai site had for a few of the 2007's that they had. In some cases they were off by 1 MPG (not a big deal but still off).

The new Elantra is supposed to be the same length but wider and taller. Base price is supposed to be under $14,000 from what I've read with the new safety equipment. Can't confirm a hatch version yet and with the Tucson in the same size class although a SUV the hatch could be in jeopardy. The new Kia Rio will have a hybrid version but the Accent initially won't. Disappointed that the 07 Elantra will still have a 4 speed auto vs 5. My 01 hatch now has 63,000 miles and has been trouble free save for having to replace the wiring harness and the ETACS module that controlled some electric functions under warranty. The doors were locking on me after I left the car and deliberately didn't lock it. Some say it's supposed to do that. Don't know. Anyway, some Elantra models had a water seepage problem that corroded the wires. Worth asking about if you are still under warranty. Given the many safety upgrades for 07 one should be looking for a steep discount to buy an 06.

The doors were locking on me after I left the car and deliberately didn't lock it. Some say it's supposed to do that. Don't know.

It's not supposed to do that, but it's very easy to do because the lock button on the remotes sticks out and has a hair-trigger. So my '01 Elantra frequently self-locked just by having the keys in my pocket. They fixed that with the '04 models; the lock button is recessed in the remote.

Base price of the '07 Elantra is supposed to be under $14k but that is for a GLS that has less convenience features than today's GLS (and is probably w/o destination charge). For example, A/C, audio system, power locking, remote locking with alarm, and heated mirrors are all extra. But on the plus side ABS and six airbags are standard, and there is more equipment available as an option such as CD changer, heated leather seats, 16" alloys, and rear center armrest. I figure the GLS with Premium Package is the minimum trim I would want.

I hadn't heard that the Accent hybrid had fallen behind the Rio hybrid. I thought both had been delayed to '07.
  • joe97joe97 Member Posts: 2,248
To the best of my knowledge there will be a Elantra hatchback offered but not initially.

Accent/Rio is still being green-lighted until the currency issues are worked out to a reasonable solution. Look for the Accent hybrid to drop first in the market, and followed by the Rio hybrid (has always been the plan and there are no change in development).

I, for one, think those EPA figures for the Elantra are impressive, and it looks as though Hyundai has delivered on its promise.

Overall, this just may be an even more compelling package in its class than the Sonata is in its; hopefully Hyundai won't peddle this vehicle at firesale prices- there's a post on the edmunds.com Inside Line homepage about a guy who purchased an LX ($25K MSRP), for under 19K! Thats great... but if Hyundai isnt turning profit it could affect the product pipeline....
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
I am wondering about the discounting on the new Elantra too. Here's why: pricing for the '07 Sonata has been announced. Depending on trim and options, pricing is down from 2006 or just a little over. So now for example the Sonata GLS, with all the safety equipment including ESC and large-car room, starts at under $18k including destination. Current incentives on the Sonata I4 are $2000 total rebates, $2000 Hyundai-to-dealer cash, and a markup of about $1500, plus there's 2% holdback. So if incentives on the Sonata are maintained, it would be possible to get a Sonata GLS for under $13k. Now I expect the dealer cash will be cut back for the '07s, at least initially, but considering a stripped '07 Elantra GLS will list at about $14k, then to bring it up close to the Sonata GLS (A/C, stereo, full power) you need to get the Premium package, the list on the Elantra could easily be $16k. So I think there will be incentives on the new Elantra fairly soon after its debut, unless Hyundai finds a way to cut back on the incentives on the Sonata.

You know, you just went to where I was thinking myself given I plan to buy in either 07 or 08.

I'm guessing the slow car market may fuel (forgive the pun!) the drop in prices across the model line: the whole industry is doing not-so-well right now.

It bodes well from a buyer's point of view, though.

A bunch of off-topic posts are now gone... if it's not about the '07 Elantra, the post is likely to do a remarkably accurate impersonation of David Blaine.

Yup... we can stray a tiny bit, but when it gets off-topic AND personal AND political... ugh, bad combo for an automotive forum. I'd rather scroll through a couple dozen posts on potential interior carpet colors for the new Elantra. Ecru? Taupe? Off-white? Cream? Tan? Beige? The possibilities are nearly limitless (though my attention span is not).

www.hyundaiusa.com, go into the Sonata section--it has been updated for the 2007 models. You can see pricing when you do "build your own".

The word I hear around the net is that there will, in fact, be an HD Elantra hatch (or possibly Spectra5-style wagon). However, popular wisdom calls for a 2008 model year release. I wasn't an Elantra fan back then, I think the 2001 XD Elanra was only available in sedan form, and the hatchback first debuted as the GT in 2002. I think it will be the same with the HD- sedan this year, hatch next.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Actually the 5-door GT debuted in the U.S. in mid-2001 as a 2001 (2001.5?) model. Maybe the HD will be like the new Accent--sedan late this year, hatchback middle of next year.

This is pretty technical for people like me, but there are interesting tidbits to be gleaned from it, e.g. there appears to be an option for user-configurable automatic locking and automatic headlamps.

Thanks! In thinking of the Accord/Camry, looks like the Sonata GLS 4 5A with power driver's seat (similar to a Camry LE), is about $19,400 hold destination price static. Thats $1600 cheaper than a comparable Camry.

Indeed, this does pose an interesting situation for the Elantra, which seems to have moved a bit upmarket from before. If the Sonata is moving out around $16,000, I wonder which vehicle consumers will chose? From the pictures only, I prefer the Elantra's interior. (And for reason of the interior alone, were I to go with a Hyundai Motors Family sedan with a 4 cylinder, I'd take the Optima-plus it has the 5A).

I could have sworn there was strong rumors about the '07 Sonata featuring a revised interior?

  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
"If wishes were horses, beggars could ride."

Hyundai isn't in the habit of doing major changes to the interior or exterior in the 2nd year of a new model. But they did add a new color scheme for the interior, will be adding XM radio later this year, and have addressed the lousy manual height adjuster by making the power seat more readily available. Not too shabby for Year 2.
  • alpha01alpha01 Member Posts: 4,747
Agreed, but there was much banter on these forums about upgrades to the interio.

the back end of the 07 Elantra does look a Corolla(the headlights and shape of the back end.) The headlights of the 07 Elantra look like they came off the 02 Sonata.

The interior of the 07 Elantra looks promising though and nicer than the current models interior. I just don;t like the 2 tone plastics that Hyundai is using now(to each his or her own.)

I think Hyundai is going too conservative with their styling. The 01-06 Elantra looks better on the outside than the 07. Thats my opinion.
