You're very welcome, Petoz. A 36 month, 15,000 miles per year lease of a 2005 S4 Sedan through Audi Financial Services right now should have a base lease money factor and residual value of .00065 and 54%, respectively. Your dealer was correct, gas guzzler tax probably cannot be residualized.

You're welcome, markrogo. I checked with a few of my sources yesterday, and the RX 400h is supposedly scheduled to go on sale on April 15th. Lexus actually finally introduced an initial lease program for it if you are interested. There is a ton of demand for this fantastic vehicle, so as one might expect there is no lease support on it. How long did you want to lease it for and how many miles do you need again?

No problem, dguptaofnj. Now that I think about it, it is actually fairly difficult to estimate lease payments for leases through Toyota financial Services because its residual values are usually based upon vehicles' base MSRPs and certain options cannot be completely residualized. Calculating sample lease payments the way that most banks do, I came up with 3 year, 12,000 miles per zero down, pre-tax monthly payments of $343 for the 4Runner and $378 for the Highlander, but these trucks' actual lease payments may be a little higher than this because of the unusual way that TFS' calculates them.

Hello jjdnu. Audi Financial Services' Premier Purchase Program is what is known in the industry as a balloon note program. Balloon notes are very similar to leases in that they provide consumers with low monthly payments and the option to purchase their vehicles at the end of a specific period of time for a pre-determined amount of money. The main difference between balloon notes and leases is that with leases, the banks' name is on your vehicle's title, while with balloon notes yours is. Balloon notes are not nearly as popular as leases are, but they have become a little more so recently, especially in states like New York where the vicarious liability laws that exist there expose banks to unnecessary liability if their names are on the titles of vehicles that are involved in accidents. I do not personally keep tabs on the details of manufacturers' balloon note programs.

    Hi Car_man:
Thanks for your reply. The monthly lease payment is $283, $0 down, 48mo, .00209mf, $8821 buyout. I plan to purchase at the end of the lease(the only reason I am leasing is b/c my company allows me to deduct $200/mo. of lease but not purchase payments.) What do you think? Thanks.
    P.S. Your site is awesome.

Hey jbtwo. You would be better off having the dealer that you lease your new vehicle from cut you a check for your trade, rather than using the proceeds as a down payment on your lease. I always advise consumers against making any sort of down payment when leasing. I do so for two main reasons. The first is if your vehicle is totaled in an accident or stolen during your lease, your insurance company pays off the bank that you were leasing it through and your down payment essentially disappears. The second main reason is that down payments on leased vehicles do nothing to reduce their lease-end purchase prices. So your lease-end purchase option price for your new vehicle would be exactly the same, regardless of whether you had put the entire proceeds from your trade down, or had made absolutely no down payment at all.

I am not personally familiar with how sales tax is calculated on leased vehicles in your state, but you may be able to find out more informaiton on this subject by visiting one of the following sites: CyberDrive Illinois or Illinois Department of Revenue.

All of the cars that you mentioned are very good vehicles. The two that probably have the most attractive lease programs available on them right now are the Lexus ES 330 and the Infiniti G35 Sedan, but a lot depends upon the MSRPs and selling prices so we would have to calculate some lease payments to figure out exactly which car will be the cheapest.

Thanks keeferb. Many domestic vehicles have terrible residual values. So much so that companies like General Motors, which took an absolute beating on the stock market yesterday BTW, artificially inflate their vehicles' residual values, often by as much as 10 points just to make them even leasable (is that even a word?). Congratulations on your new Pathfinder. It is an excellent truck. Enjoy!

You're welcome, elag1. Acura is not providing any sort of lease support on either of these cars right now, so the TL's money factors would be exactly the same as the ones that I mentioned earlier for the TSX. AHFC's residual values for a 36 month, 12,000 miles per year lease of a 2005 TL without navigation should currently be 60%. Its 39 month resid should be 56%. I have not seen its 42 month program.

Thank You, Car_man. One of the Toyota dealers quoted me $378/Mo for 36 Months., $1000 down on a V6 AWD Highlander Limited ( MSRP about $35.5K ) and $373/Mo for the 4Runner Sport V6 4WD, with the same terms as the HL. The HL is loaded ( the only things missing are NAV and DVD ), but the 4Runner just has Sunroof, Rear Spoiler and the Upgraded Audio ( MSRP of $31,350 ). There is something wrong with his calculations, definitely on the 4Runner Sport V6 4WD.
I can lease the Acura MDX Base for $399/Mo for $999 down, 36 Months Lease. DO you think that is a better deal than either of the two Toyota's ?
Thanks so much. You have been very helpful.

Can't thank you enough for this information!! It will help tremendously....
If you don't mind, I may need to check back with you in a couple weeks to see what changes April brings to A6 3.2 MF/lease program --
Will you have insight to this on the first of the month?
    thanks again !!

I say thank you car_man. I have been
trying through the dealer and also BMW financing to explain the rent charge to me. They both refer me back to one another. Stonewall. You saved the day. I had been putting too much emphasis on the negotiated selling price of a 525i and overlooked the MF completely. Never again.

    Car_Man...

I went to my local dealer found out that the 2006 E350 Sedan was available rather than the 2005 E320 I had you comment on in an earlier posting.

Could you please provide me with the 39 mth, 15K miles/yr money factor, residual, and any "dealer cash" for a 2006 Mercedes E350 sedan located in NJ.

    Thanks in advance

I've been reading this forum for the last couple months and found a lot of great advice -- thanks! Our 2001 volvo s40 is coming off lease, and I wonder if you could help me figure out what a fair lease would be on the 2 replacement cars we're considering. We want a 3-yr lease with 0 down, 12K miles/yr. We live in New York.

    Option 1.
    Volvo v50 2.4i
MSRP $26,685 (includes $695 destination charge)
Selling price $24,314 (includes option of stability/traction control; also includes $1250 loyalty incentive and X plan discount)

    Option 2.
    Honda CR-V EX automatic
MSRP $24,065 (includes $515 destination charge)
Assume sale price of $22,730 (Edmund's TMV in our area)

    Thanks for your help.

    dear Host,

Could you please provide current money factor rates/residuals for MB CLK320 Coupe/E320 for 36/48 months lease. Are there any specials going on right now?
    (cars.com shows 0.002876/57% and 0.002872/48%

Actually, the capitalized cost is $26,779. The $28,058.05 I gave you would be the out-the-door cost on a purchase with tax, title and doc fees. So if I have my math right, I am figuring a lease of about $293.44/month with only paying the first month lease payment and aquisition fees at inception. Does that sound right?

By the way, thanks a lot for your help- you really provide a great service for us lease newbies.

    Thanks for your reply.

I am presented with an option from the dealer to purchase a 2002 BMW330xi this week at $27.5k. The dealer will do a certification (CPO), new tires, brake pads and inspections and extend the warranty to 100k.

The residual value is $25,280. With three payments left ($550) I am currently over the mileage by 7,300 miles at 20cent per/mile. (Current mileage 52,300 miles.)

I am looking at another lease option this time for 20,000 miles/yr.

The vehicles quoted thus far are:

    1) Infiniti M35 msrp 51240, dealer quote 49,000 and pmts of 699/month two years $1700 in deposit, fees.

    2) Audi A6 msrp 51820 and quotes 49,262

Lease mileage is .15 cents per mile in excess of 15k....25 cents per mile if you exceed it.
    Lease Example with $2,000 down...
    36 month lease, 20,000 miles/yr.
    Base Payment $692 plus tax
15,000 miles per year would lower the payment by $60 from the 20k mark.

    Question:

    1) Is the BMW deal a good one to pass on?
    2) Are the quoted leases fair?

    Thanks for your time.

Thank you very much - I still say coupe in conversation - can't stop catching myself!

You've been a great help. I have something to go to the dealership with now. (Now, if I can figure out if I like the TL, G, or ES330 more, I'd be perfect!)

Here's a naive question. Infiniti tells me I'm 'either approved for the lease program or not,', and Audi tells me 'Honda slides the scale based on credit score'. (My credit is fine, but I don't want to fill out a credit app at either dealer until I'm ready to pull the trigger) Does Infiniti really only have 1 tier for leasing?

    Thank you sir...

I posted the other day asking for info on the 9-3 Arc. I'm also interested in info on the Linear. Can you give me MF and residual info for 24 and 36 month leases at 12k miles per year. Also, is the lease cash and bonus cash the same on Linear as on the Arc? Thanks again for your help.

    >>1) Infiniti M35 msrp 51240, dealer quote
    >>49,000 and pmts of 699/month two years $1700
    >>in deposit, fees.

You really should get ALL the numbers if you are getting a lease quote: what is the money factor and the residual. I assume 20k miles per year?

I am surprised you could get so much off the new M - most dealers are not discounting them at all (unless you are on the VPP and work for Nissan).

$699 does not sound that bad if that is 24 months, 40k. I didn't see M35 numbers for that, but the M45 numbers for 24/30k are 71% and 0.00168. So I figure it drops 2% or so for 20k per year on the residual and 1-2% because it is the M35. So 68% of $51,240 = $34,843.20. Using the M45 MF gets $730.72 per month base payment.

I assume the $1700 out of pocket would be $700 or so first month and the rest is the acquisition fee and tax/tags?

Does not sound that bad at all - but I have not seen the exact figures for an M35 2yr, 40k lease.

Okay so I have done all the preliminary legwork to get narrow my choice down to a 2005 Acura MDX Touring Package with DVD and Nav (YD1895JNW) in the Nighthawk Black Pearl W/ebony interior.

The best quote I have been given is $40,259.00 including $570.00 destination. I was told that the only additional charges are Virginia sales tax (5%), tags and $100.00 processing fee.

So...I feel this is a pretty fair deal. I am now moving to the "let's talk about financing" stage.

    36 month/15,000 mile lease.

I am going to trade in my 1993 Acura Vigor with 109,000 miles because I don't want to deal with the hassle of selling it. (It's been a wonderfuly reliable car!) So they will tell me tomorrow how much they will give me for it, but for the sake of argument let's say it's $2500.

    QUESTIONS:
    1. Must I put that money into the lease deal or can I put half toward the lease and put the rest in the bank?

    2. I see many of you asking about what type of money factor you should expect. Isn't that dependent upon an individual's credit rating? My credit is good. What kind of money factor should I expect?

    3. What kind of first payment can I expect?

    4. Do you find that shopping around for a lease deal is beneficial? Any places you'd recommend?

Thank you in advance for all your words of wisdom. I am sure I will have many more questions so I hope you will all put up with me.

The current offer I'm getting on the Nissan Altima 2.5s is "0 down, $245 a month plus tax for 24 months."

The dealer says that the Residual would be 69% and a money factor of .0006. Selling price is $18,950.

When I plug in these numbers I get $218 a month.

I'm a little concerned that Car Man says that the residual should be 59%. I'm also still confused with how you can get $218 a month with 59%.

I am negotiating a lease on a 2005 Nissan Murano SL AWD with Leather package, Bose system etc.

MSRP around $35,000-$36,000. Looking at 42 months, 18,000 miles needed.

They will give me about $2,500 for my car on trade.

Lease rates are coming in at $390 or so per month.

What's a good lease deal on this one?

    Thanks.
  • dwynnedwynne Member Posts: 4,018
    From the Nissan web page:

2005 Altima 2.5 S Auto w/Splash Guard, Protection Pkg & Mats (model #05715/05215) subject to availability to qualified lessees through Infiniti-Nissan LT. $1,699 initial payment required at consummation. Includes $1,500 consumer down payment, $199 first month payment, $0 security deposit. MSRP $20,620 includes destination charge. Net capitalized cost of $19,042 includes a $550 non-refundable acquisition fee ($795 non-refundable acquisition fee for residents of New York and Rhode Island). Dealer discount required, which may affect actual price set by dealer. Monthly payments total $4,776.72. At lease end, purchase for $14,434.00, plus $150 purchase option fee (except KS & WI), plus tax, or pay excess wear and tear plus $0.15 per mile for mileage over 12,000 miles per year. Lessee is responsible for maintenance and repairs. See participating dealer for details. Offer ends 03/31/2005

14,434 / 20,620 = 70% residual. If you plug these numbers into a lease calculator you get a MF of 0.0002 to get the $199 per month payment. They are rolling the acq fee into the lease. If you don't want to put anything "down", then we add $1,500 to the cap cost: $19,042 + $1,500 = $20,542 net cap cost. Plugging this into the calculator shows a payment of $261.50. Your dealer is discounting the car more - but must also be charging you a doc fee or something. To get $245 a month your net cap would be $20,150. If we take your selling price (they say) plus the $550 acq fee this leaves $650 missing.

But as you can see, if you take Nissan's advertised special and pay nothing down you would be paying MORE than what your dealer is asking. So your dealer is not TERRIBLE - just needs to be a little better. I saw an ad for a Boston area dealer showing the 2.5s for $149 a month with $0 down - but even if they made $0 on the sale I don't see how they could do this.

    Hi krishno22,

Here are my numbers for your case:

Scenario 1, you pay first month, acquisition fee, title and license at inception:

    MSRP: 20,550
    Price: 18,950
    Cap Cost: 18,950
    MF: 0.0006
    Residual: 69%
Paid at inception: 1st month + Acq. Fee (550) + Title + License

    Calculations:
    Residual Value: 20,550 * 69% = 14,179.50
    Depreciation: 18,950 - 14,179.50 = 4,770.50
    Depreciation Per Month: 4,770.50 / 24 = 198.77
    Rent (financial) Charge Per Month: (18,950 + 14,179.50) * 0.0006 = 19.88
    Payment (before sales tax) = 198.77 + 19.88 = 218.65

Scenario 2, you pay first month, title and license at inception, and the acquisition fee gets rolled into the lease payments:

    MSRP: 20,550
    Price: 18,950
    Cap Cost: 18,950 + 550 = 19,500
    MF: 0.0006
    Residual: 69%
Paid at inception: 1st month + Title + License

    Calculations:
    Residual Value: 20,550 * 69% = 14,179.50
    Depreciation: 19,500 - 14,179.50 = 5,320.50
    Depreciation Per Month: 5,320.50 / 24 = 221.69
    Rent (financial) Charge Per Month: (19,500 + 14,179.50) * 0.0006 = 20.21
    Payment (before sales tax) = 221.69 + 20.21 = 241.90

As you can see, it all depends on what "zero down" means to your dealer. Pay attention to what the contract says and make sure the money is going to where it is supposed to. I believe though that the MF and residual your dealer is giving you are right and current. At the end of last month the terms were 70% and .00021, as Dennis mentioned.

One last thing to consider, the residual differential between the 12k and 15k is 1%, so getting extra 6,000 miles of allowance will cost you about $205, as opposed to $900 if you had to pay for them at the end of the lease.

    Hope this helps.

If you go to the Nissan web page and look at the specials you should see the exact deal I posted: $199 a month with a 70% residual. The offer expires at the end of this month - so it must still be good.

Okay, I read all this stuff and plugged my numbers into the calculator, but I can't recreate the current offer. These are the specs, what am I doing wrong?

    Saab 93 Linear
    Selling price $27,570
    24 month/12K
    Residual 59%
    MF .00001
Acq Fee $3350 (this is the "due at lease inception" #, includes "down pmt., sec. dep., acq. fee & first mo. pmt." I also added the $350 disposition fee into this figure - not sure what that is)
When I plug all these numbers in, the calculator gives me $659.72 monthly pymt. Saab is offering $248.21. What am I doing wrong?

    >> you that Mazda is providing $1,000 customer
    >> and $1,000 dealer cash on leases of the '05
    >> RX-8 through its captive finance company.

I dealer with very aggressive pricing told me 0.00320 MF and 50% residual on a 36mo/36k lease - so that sounds about right to you?

I looks like I can do these deals for an 05 6mt RX-8 w/GT pack an NAV - $33,685 MSRP:

Captive MAC: purchase price will be $31,080 - $2,000 in rebates = $29,080. Assuming I pay acq fee and tags at signingw/first payment, then with 0.00320 and 50% then residual is $16,842.50 and the base payment will be $486.88.

3rd party bank: 0.00215 (I should get a discount on this rate) and 49% . I am not clear if I get the $1,000 rebate or not if I do 3rd party (I know the dealer does not get the other $1,000). Cap cost in this case will be $30,681 (w/o rebate) and residual is $16,506 so I get $495.20 base payment. If I DO get the $1,000 with my own financing, then I would get $465.27 per month. Both of these would be a little less if I get a discounted rate.

A similar left over 04 would be $28,739 if I don't go through MAC. With a MF of 0.00251 and a residual of $15,030 would be $490.67.

I don't know what the MAC 04 lease numbers would be, but there is a $2,500 MAC rebate that would apply. IF the residual was the same as the 3rd party and maybe a 0.00350 MF it would be $455.80.

Finally, if I purchased the 04 car via MAC for $26,239 (not counting tax) and getting about 6% from MAC it would be $507.27 for 60 months, w/o tax and $542.78 w/sales tax.

So I guess I need to get the 04 MAC lease numbers and find out if I get the $1,000 for a NON-MAC lease so I can tune the choices a little more.

Car_Man, as always, you provide impeccable info. :-).

The dealer told me I could get the car for $200 over invoice because I have a GM supllier's discount code. So by looking at Edmunds data, I get the following for a SAAB Arc 9-5 Wagon:

    MSRP = 37050
    Invoice = 34653
thus my price would be aprox. 34853

Can you provide lease numbers based on that?

    Thanks again

I have just been offered the following lease on a new 2005 Acura TL. Purchase price is $32,000.

DOWN - $2500 cap reduction plus tax plus first month's lease and waiver of security deposit.

TERMS - $350/month with 12,000 miles per year for 48 months.

    Residual of $17,000.

Is this a 'slick deal'? Need to know if I should go for $340?

    Car_man,

Can you provide me the residuals and money factors for 36/39 and 42/48 whichever months you have access to and are the best combination (with or without Nav, if it matters)? The car would be registered in AZ. Thank you so much.

Is the 27,570 the msrp? If it is, I think you have to subtract 5350 of cap cost reduction/dealer cost reduction/manufacturer lease support from the msrp. Your cap cost is then 22,220 and your residual is 16,266 (59% of 27,570). See if that works.

Does anyone know whether or not you can transfer plates on a lease to lease with the same dealer? My dealer is telling me no, but the DMV is telling me yes. The dealer states that the plate basically belongs to VW and they have to turn it into the DMV when the new lease starts.

Need some help on what to expect on lease of Mazda RX-8.
I have never leased cars before, and I'm not a very good negotiator as well. Are there any promotions by Mazda going on in Southern CA?
Will someone share his/her experience leasing Mazda RX-8?
    Thanks much!

I picked up an Altima lease special in the Boston area this week. The always of course claim to not have any of the stripped models but I got one with very little for $170.04 per month with no money down -- except for the $500 college grad rebate for which I don't qualify. I chose to pay it upfront so I guess the lease would have been about $20 more per month. My cash out of pocket was:

    $550 acquisition
    $299 doc fee
    $500 college grad
$178.99 first month (including sales tax)
    $135 in registration fees
    FOR $1663 out the door

This Altima S has fog lights, mats and coat protection.

    Good luck to all!

The RX-8 is a poor leasing car. The residual on a 3 yr, 36k lease is 50% from Mazda and 49% from third party lease banks. This is well below what you would want.

In addition, the Mazda money factor is pretty high. They DO have $2,000 in lease cash to sweeten the deal but it does not lease well.

The best deal going now is to pick up a left over 2004 for cheap. Mazda has $4,000 in rebates if you finance the car with them. In addtion, dealers are selling them for invoice or up to $1,000 BELOW invoice. This means you can get a new 04 for as much as $5,000 below dealer cost - which is a pretty hot deal.

Where are you located in So CA? You want an automatic, right? What color or colors would you consider and which options? You want AT LEAST a sports pack car - since this ads the stability and traction control and HID lights. The touring pack (is overpriced) and adds the Bose stereo and moonroof, the gran touring pack is thr touring plus leather, bun warmers, mirror heaters.

Let me look and see what is availble near where you live and what the dealers that have them are saying.

You can e-mail me at: y2k_c5 (insert at sign here) yahoo.com if you prefer.

Carman, do you have any lease data on the Volvo C70?

    I'm considering leasing a 2004 C70 HPT Manual. 3 yr 12k per year.

    Thanks!

Remember there is a $5,000 cash to dealer incentive on the C70 to help them move them out (it is 1/2 the way through the 05 model year and they have TONS of these on the lots).

One of my local dealers has 14 on the lot and is advertising an LPT with an MSRP of $41,410 for $34,410.

I am pretty sure Volvo financial does not want to lease you this car - since you will be bringing it back at lease end. They can't get rid of them now, so they don't want it back :-)

I would GUESS that like on the Volvo "R" cars the cash is only good for a NON-Volvo lease. You can get your own quote (and get the lease) over at www.leasecompare.com . I put in an HPT for $36,000 with 1 mile on it and got a residual of $20,632 with a MF of 0.00251 and a monthly of $613 + tax. You Volvo dealer may have a non-Volvo lease bank that could give a similar or better number - if not you can do the deal with LC. Keep in mind this is leasing a USED car - we are WAY past the cut off for getting a left over with new money - so the rates will be higher.

    Hi Car Man,

Well I did a little more hunting and I found my car (2005 RX 330 FWD) via Car Direct. They have quoted me a money factor of .00115 thru Lexus. Is there new support from Lexus for the RX330. I thought the rate was .00145 at the best? This was for a 36 mos Lease and %53 for Residual

BTW, I understand from the dealer that if the cap cost is under $40,000 then the pre-purchase mileage is .10 at time of lease and .15 for excess mileage at the end of the lease. If the Cap is over $40K then the mileage is .15 prepaid and .20 after the lease. Since my Cap Cost is at $41K, I am planning on putting an additional $1000 bring my cap down to $40K. I calculate a saving of $450 by me doing this. Have you heard of this before?

    Thanks,

    Jim

my wife and i have been planning to lease the z4 so we checked out the local dealer last saturday.

Sales guy we talked to said he could do 4K below MSRP on any 2.5 even if we ordered one new. This after i told him about my research that most ppl are paying invoice+ (500 to 1000)-incentive(2500). So, the cheapest one on the lot was 38kmsrp/34K selling.

About lease, i mentioned website deal, he said they would do a 0.0245 mf with 59% residual for 10K miles/36 mos. He says additional 0.00045 is because they need to make 'some' profit. Can i get a better deal that this on both cost price & lease terms?

    TIA

Sounds like a good deal, I saw this posted - but it is for an AWD w/NAV so the residual is likely a touch higher.

    Dennis

    2005 Lexus RX330 AWD w/RSE & NAV

    24 mo/15k mi – 57% Residual Value – Money Factor .00205 Base Rate
    36 mo/15k mi – 52% Residual Value – Money Factor .00125 Base Rate
    48 mo/15k mi – 43% Residual Value – Money Factor .00125 Base Rate
    60 mo/15k mi – 35% Residual Value – Money Factor .00205 Base Rate

    Add 2% to residual for 12k mi/yr
