I'm so jealous! You have almost the exact car I want. A GS 5-speed with the power package, which seems to be a hard car to find. I would want a black one with a spoiler though. Anyway, congrats on your new car. You should enjoy it a lot. As for the seat, always push the seat back into place before rotating the seatback. Otherwise, it won't return to the original position. I will have to try what dbwells suggested on the driver's side as well, because my seat has always returned one click too far back and one click too reclined.
I'm also jealous of everyone's mileage! I just got 29.5 mpg in all city dirving with very little use of the AC. In other words, thats as good as it gets in the city for me :( I normally get 27.5 when using the AC all the time.

You bought a nice car. Hyundai has come along way. I read some place that Hyundai quality is better than Nissan and is fast approaching Toyota/Honda quality.
Gas mileage is low for the first 1000 miles or so and then it gets up into the upper 30's. I got 1200 miles on my 2001 accent GL and its still rising. I haven't driven on the highway much, 90 percent of my driving is basically city driving. My city mileage is around 32 or 33 MPG and still rising. Just don't accelerate fast. Shift quickly from 1 to 5 and keep the rpm's down.
I love everything about my car. Everything is an improvement over my last car, a 1992 mitsubishi mirage. My last car was extremely reliable but was a basic car. Only had a radio. The Accent comes fully equiped and after factoring in inflation, cost the same as my old car!
The only thing I wish I had was a tilt steering wheel. I'm tall. But Its not too bad once your in.

I've found one more thing to add to my small list of minor gripes about my new GS. Although the dome light is as bright as any I've ever seen, and the dashboard lights up like a Christmas tree (love those turquoise backlights for the meters!), the cargo light seems to shed about as much illumination as a birthday cake candle. It's better than nothing, but I still have to pull out a flashlight to see what's really there. I wonder if there's a higher-wattage bulb that fits the same fixture but wouldn't overheat or blow a fuse?

I've read posts from yahoo auto section concerning Hyundai vehicles.
Theres some people who have lots of problems with their cars and some people have none at all.
Why is this so ? Aren't all cars built the same ?
Sure there are manufacturing defects ,all car makers make some defective cars. But why does it seem hyundai experiences more defects ? Could it be poor quality control ? Or could it be poor maintanence or poor driving ?
Young adults buy more hyundais than any other age group. They drive the fastest and cannot afford proper maintanence or just don't care . If you don't care about your vehicle, it will wear out quickly. Older people have learned from their past auto's and know that maintanence is vital.
When I was 22 , I bought a 1982 ford escort. I drove it for 15000 miles before the timing belt snapped. That cost me $800 to repair.
The timing belt was the last thing on my mind. Never knew it had to be replaced!
Hyundai's are driven mostly by young people with little knowledge of cars and the people driving these cars just don't care about their cars. Alot of the problem cars you read about, are not maintained or there abused. Look on the road. Look how hyundai drivers drive.
Sure there are defects, but I think alot of the problems in the later models are caused by poor maintanence and poor driving.

There's no doubt that Hyundai has come a long way in the improvement of the QA/QC in the manufacture of it's vehicles ... but as the owner of 2 Accents (a 99 and an 01), I can attest that they are fine cars, however they still aren't at the same level as say Honda or Toyota ... almost, but not quite ... but then again, maybe that's why Hyundai's are less expensive ...
Back in the mid-80's to early 90's, I owned a Honda CRX and a Dodge (Mitsubishi) Colt consecutively ... both were great cars, very reliable, but the Colt just seemed to be less solidly built, or had "slightly" cheaper materials in it than the Honda ... My wife's 99 Accent reminds me very much of the Colt ... as does my 01 Accent, only to a lesser degree ... so there's no doubt about it, Hyundai continue to improve every year and it good value per $ spent.
I did once own a 94 Excel that was the worst dog ever to park in my driveway ...

Just a quick update on my Accent GS automatic, which just reached 4000 miles. So far, so good. The only thing that really bothers me about this car is that the engine is quite loud, especially when accelerating from a stop up to 25 mph. The power, although not impressive, is fine as long as you don't mind the growling engine. Otherwise, while cruising, the cabin is really quiet for such a small little car. The mileage hasn't really been great either, only about 22 mpg on mostly city driving. Overall, at this point I would give this car a B grade.

I've read a few references to a heated outside rearview mirror. Is that included on the U.S. model, or is it one of those things like tilt steering wheel and fog lights that are only available outside the U.S.?
  • destro2001destro2001 Member Posts: 15
You are correct, options like tilt, fog lights, and heated mirrors aren't available in the US (and probably not canada either).
  • dashingwavedashingwave Member Posts: 22
Does the 2001 Accent GL come with a tilt steering wheel ? / I read some place that it was standard on the 2001 model. Can't find it on my steering wheel.
  • lngtonge18lngtonge18 Member Posts: 2,228
No Accents come with a tilt steering wheel. In my opinion, it doesn't need one anyway as the wheel is perfectly placed, unless you are over 6'2".
  • sfarkas2sfarkas2 Member Posts: 12
I have both on my 2001 Gsi and it was standard for this package. Its the Canadian sport model with the 1.6l engine and a number of other features. The tilt steering may be arguable. While there is a lever to adjust the height of the whole steering column, it only moves a matter of about 3 inchs (total steering wheel movement)

Last January I leased an 01 Accent GS, 2-dr Hatchback, with Automatic, CD Player, 1.5 litre engine ... and it came with a Tilt Wheel (which I leave in a fixed position, as I'm not a very big guy) ... didn't even know it had tilt until after I took delivery ...
  • lngtonge18lngtonge18 Member Posts: 2,228
Ok, correction is in order. I should have said no tilt wheel is offered in the US.

After 6 months / 7000 miles, I've had the speedo cable changed as it was making a loud rattling noise. Got the car back and THE NOISE IS STILL THERE (although at lower engine speed). Strange problem I think, anyone have any ideas? (Otherwise happy with accent)
    Cheers!
  • dashingwavedashingwave Member Posts: 22
Push for the lowest price you can get. Don't believe hyundai dealers when they tell you they are losing money if they sell below the sticker price.
I got a 2001 hyundai accent GL with a/c and free oil for life and a tire guarantee for $8400 plus tax and reg. fees. This car was brand new and it was 5 speed manual. It was also a year end model. If your looking for cheapies, shop at the end of the model year. The sticker price on this car was $11,250. They sold it to me for $8400.
I guarantee the dealer didn't lose money on this car. If you pay $11,250, the dealer is making about 3 grand. There's alot to negotiate!
So far I've driven this car for 1500 miles and its a honey. The a/c and heat is really powerful!

I have a 1995 Accent 2 dr model. I have 129,000 miles on it, and have been very happy with it. I love the way it handles and zip around in it. It's a sort of pink color, which I get teased about, but the registration says it's Barcelona Red. I get an average of 35 mpg for highway/city mixed miles. I've noticed if I load the car down for my camping trips I get even better mileage! Aerodynamics at work!
I love it. I have a manual transmission, which I had to replace at about 96,000 miles and with the old warranty it wasn't covered anymore, I also had to replace my alternator at about 110,000. The battery went totally dead so it made the air bag light come on that I had to have reset by the dealer, and lastly I just did my first round of brake work on the car at about 125,000. So for a new clutch and transmission, a new alternator, and brakes on all four wheels, plus some other brake stuff that was replaced so basically in six years and 129,000 I have put $1,200 in a car I paid $9473(including sales tax and an am/fm cassette deck added--only option I had added to it). I live in NY State so we have roads that are salted and it is just started to rust a little on the passenger side. I really love my Hyundai and would get another one. The only annoying problem it has is this past summer my passenger window jumped the track so it's hard to open and close. If I bought a new hyundai I would get air conditioning in it.
I used to have a subaru justy and it didn't get gas mileage as good as the hyundai, and it always cost more to repair.

today i was going home and my windows fogged up real bad. I turned on the defroster and it cleared up in a second. The defroster in the accent is superb!
I'm planning on getting a cargo net for my trunk. How much does a hyundai dealer charge ?
  • lngtonge18lngtonge18 Member Posts: 2,228
I hit 20,000 miles on my 00 Accent L. Everything continues to hold up well. This car is an excellent value for those who want cheap transportation that is also comfortable, quiet, solid, and refined.

As a side note, I recently purchased an 02 Mitsubishi Lancer OZ Racing Rally Edition. I will now be able to see firsthand whether there is any difference in reliability between a car built in Japan and one built in Korea. So far, 650 miles, and I'm already taking it back to the dealer for 2 small manufacturing defects (both front seats are very difficult to slide on their tracks and the driver's side rocker sill extension has a paint defect).

Has anyone purchased a cargo net from a hyundai dealer ? How much did it cost ?
  • forrestwforrestw Member Posts: 1
The one reason I was going for the Hyundai(Accent) is the warranty, but after a closer look it is actually very limited in scope. The 10year/100,000 mile powertrain is very nice, but the 5year/60,000 mile only covers accessories. Paint is covered for 3 years, radio for 2 years, brakes for 1 year etc... There is not a lot that I can see that is actually covered for a full 5 years. I guess that is why they call it a "Limited" 5 year warranty. Anyone wish to elaborate on this.

    Thanks - Gump

I've had my 2002 GS for a month now. I've put about 1600 miles on it, and I've had no problems so far. I find it very comfortable, and I really enjoy driving it. (In fact, I find myself looking for excuses to drive it: "Can I get you something from the grocery store?" "I'll take Christopher to his music lesson tonight." Etc. :-) I've averaged 32.3 mpg over my last three fill-ups in mostly suburban driving. All in all, I'm very pleased with it to date. (My wife drove it for the first time last Sunday, and she threatened to take it and make me drive the minivan! I _hope_ she was joking... :-)
  • lngtonge18lngtonge18 Member Posts: 2,228
I believe the cargo net costs between $30-40. Very cheap and it is useful. Even keeps 12 packs of coke from sliding around.

As for the bumper-to-bumper warranty, yes, you aren't covered for paint, radio, brakes, clutch, or AC freon for the full term (just like any other manufacturer's warranty). However, anything else that breaks on the car is covered. This includes: AC compressor, alternator, water pump, power steering pump, suspension, oxygen sensors, ignition, anything electrical, and anything in the interior. This is quite a few items! Seeing as most companies only warranty these items for 3/36k, I'm very happy with the 5/60k.
  • wmmillerwmmiller Member Posts: 15
Does the cargo net work with the hatchback, too, or only the 4-door? What's involved in installing it? I noticed a couple of hooks in the cargo area that look like they might be for that purpose, but I wasn't sure. (I have the GS model, if that makes a difference.)
  • lngtonge18lngtonge18 Member Posts: 2,228
The cargo net is for both the sedan and hatchback. I have the hatchback and it works great. Those 2 hooks are meant for the net. However, there are 2 hooks that need to be installed at the bottom of the cargo hold directly below the other two, where you see those plastic screw heads. I don't have these 2 bottom hooks since I "took" my net from an open unsold car (hey, they screwed me big time on the deal so I thought that was the least they could give me, LOL). I assume you get the other 2 hooks if you buy the net from the dealer. It's not necessary though. The top 2 hooks hold the net in place; it's just that the bottom of the net isn't as stable and swings some without the bottom hooks.
  • wmmillerwmmiller Member Posts: 15
Thanks for the response. It seems curious that they would install two of the four hooks needed for the cargo net, eh? One would expect either all or none.

In any event, I called my dealer and ordered one. They didn't have it in stock, but they said it would take 2-3 business days and cost $28. I'll report back on my experience after I've installed it.

intonge 18, I thought that I would do my first posting on here. Like I said, I own a base 2000 Accent. I have 9600 miles on it and have owned it for 20 months. I bought it for just basic transportation and I usually buy my cars new and drive them for 10 years or more. With my wife's health concerns, I need to find an automatic. I have even thought about buying a GS or GL Accent model with an automatic. That way the big depreciation would not be as big of a factor. I really just have two complaints with my Accent. The first one is sometimes the brakes make a rubbing and scraping sound. I have taken it to the dealer. They checked the brakes and found nothing wrong. The service manager said that sometimes the brakes build up a thin film of rust. The brakes have seemed allright recently. The second complaint is the paint and finish seems to scratch to easy. But overall, I really love it for what I bought it for and that is basic, no frill tranportation.
  • perry40perry40 Member Posts: 94
Brake rotors sometimes develop a thin film of rust, only if the car has been sitting unused in a humid or wet environment for a few days, or a week or so. Rust wil not stay on the rotors if the car is being used, as the brake pads will scour it off! As for the paint, I've noticed that my black 01 Accent GS scratches easily too ... try keeping a good coat of wax on your car.
  • brc3brc3 Member Posts: 13
Has anyone bought a GS or a GL automatic recently? I thought I would ask to see what price range they are selling for.

ingtonge18, you mentioned that you were screwed big time on your deal. When I bought my 2000 Accent L, it was a pretty much straightforward, simple transaction. Of course, I did not have a trade in, did not finance, and did not get any dealer installed options (like rustproofing, fabric protection etc.) or extended warranty to complicate matters.
  • perry40perry40 Member Posts: 94
Funny ... the windshield washer pump appears to have stopped working ... I checked the fuse (O.K.) and the fluid tank (2/3 full), yet when I pull the wiper stalk, no squirt ... I can't even hear the pump whirring?? Any ideas on this ... can't drive a car (01 Accent GS) here on the East Coast of Canada this time of the year without the windshield washer working!
  • lngtonge18lngtonge18 Member Posts: 2,228
I made the mistake of walking in with no intents of buying and thus no preparedness and then walking out with a new car. I had been turned down by 2 other dealers on basic cars, so I was shocked and ecstatic when I found a dealer who could finance me as a first time buyer without checking my income, requiring a huge sum down, or requiring a cosignor. Without my info in front of me, I was pretty clueless on how to deal on a car. I did it the wrong way by just working the payments and not actually the price of the car. To make a long story short, the dealer made a pretty penny off of me. At least I got the money back that was charged for some sort of road hazard warranty. It was a learning experience to say the least.
  • aldagaldag Member Posts: 81
Sounds like a good item to get fixed under the warranty. Could be a switch problem, connector problem, pump motor failure, possible ground fault. A check with a meter can narrow it down. As for my 2000 Accent L, I just topped 21000 miles and it is working great. I was able to fix the sunshade clip with glue.
  • perry40perry40 Member Posts: 94
Yeah, I'm bringing it in to the Dealer tomorrow, eventhough I don't have an appointment and I'll likely be late for work ... both my wife and I drive Accents (she has a 99) and for the most part we love the cars ... however, it's these little malfunctions that crop up a couple of times a year that we find really annoying and the inconvenience of shop visits outside of the regular 2 scheduled service checks per year per vehicle. Hyundai has come a long way in the past several years, but the little bugs make me feel that the overall build quality still isn't up to the standards of Honda, Toyota, or even Mazda ...

I just bought a 2002 Accent GS and need a car rack. The dealer did not carry any. Has anyone installed one, or have any experience with a car rack on the Accent?
  • petcarpetcar Member Posts: 4
Prices/deals seem to vary by region. The best price I found was from CarsDirect.com. My local dealer matched it for the 2002 Accent GS automatic I bought yesterday. The price was below invoice.

petcar, Thanks for the information. What region of the country are you in? I am in Ohio.

'01 GL 7700 miles. Still runs fine. Replaced rear bumper (and frame realignment) cost the guy who hit me $900. Looks good as new, no rattles, etc. The cargo net screws have stripped-out!!! Gas fill-up...realized (as the Owner's Manual says) to NEVER top it off! Always nice and full when the pump handle clicks off. I have always clicked the gas cap 3+ times to avoid the "Check Engine" light...but the light came on the other day! The dealer service guy says drive it a few days and the light may go off. It hasn't, so I'm going to take it in to have them check it and to have them fix the cargo net screws. I'll keep you posted.
  • perry40perry40 Member Posts: 94
Same thing happened with my 01 Accent several months ago ... Check light came on & stayed on for a number of days; took the car to the dealer who found the cause was a loose wiring connector on the auto-tranny's "pulse generator" ... the collision may have loosened yours.
My "no squirt" situation was the result of a faulty windshield wash pump, which was replaced at no charge by my local Dealership!

I'm buying a bike rack for my accent Gl. Any recommondations ?
I saw a nice one made by bell- rhode gear. Walmart sells it for $58 dollars online. It attaches to the trunk. Just hope the trunk can handle the stress of a swaying rack!
I love my 2001 accent GL! My $8400 was well spent.
  • dashingwavedashingwave Member Posts: 22
Do hyundai dealers in other parts of the country advertize their cars for real cheap like they do in NY. The dealers here are advertizing 2002 Accents for $5700 dollers. I was lured into the dealerships with an ad like this and ended up paying $8400. All the hyundai dealers here are doing this. It borders on being illegal.
  • lngtonge18lngtonge18 Member Posts: 2,228
They don't do that in my Florida town. They advertise Accent 2 doors at $8995 or $149 a month.
  • wmmillerwmmiller Member Posts: 15
I promised a report on my purchase and installation of a cargo net for my 2002 Accent GS, so here goes.

I ordered the net by phone from my dealer last Friday and received a call yesterday that it had arrived. It cost US$28 plus tax.

The package comes with the netting, lower hooks that must be installed, and an instruction sheet. Installation was really easy. The hardware in the package consists of two studs and two T-shaped anchors that screw onto one end of the studs. The other end of the stud has a very coarse thread, like a lag bolt. Next, you have to remove the two plugs that attach the interior plastic trunk wall to the sheet metal of the body. These are somewhat like the wall anchors you use with sheet rock -- a unit with a central screw that forces fingers apart to grip the hole. When you unscrew the center, the entire unit pulls out easily (the instructions talk about prying the unit out with a flat-bladed screwdriver, but that was completely unnecessary in my case, at least).

Next, you screw the stud/anchor assembly into the holes. This also is very easy; just don't overtighten the assembly in the hole or you'll run the risk of stripping it (the only thing gripping the threads is a thin layer of sheet metal).

The final step is to hook the loops at the corners of the net over the existing hooks at the top and the newly-installed anchors at the bottom.

If you haven't seen one of the nets, it's two layers of netting open at the top to form a bag into which small items can be inserted. Stretched across the trunk, it also divides the storage area into a narrow space near the bumper and a wide space between the net and the rear seat, to accommodate items of various sizes. It looks to be pretty handy for keeping stuff from shifting around with the motion of the car.

I have not seen a Hyundai dealer do this, but here in Atlana, there is a Dodge dealer that does it. What they do is show a picture of something like an Intrepid and say its about $15,000. In small print, they say that price is after $3500 down! Talk about deceiving!
  • petcarpetcar Member Posts: 4
brc3 - I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area. The car market here was depressed until the 0.0 APR campaign by car manufacturers. Hyuandi does not offer this, so it put some pressure on the dealers. Also I negotiated and bought on the same day - the last day of the month (Nov 30), actually just a few hours before closing. That added extra incentive for the salesman since it gave him a last minute chance to make/improve his sales quota for the month. Good luck in your negotiations.
  • majorthomechomajorthomecho Member Posts: 1,331
I have seen the trick with advertising a low "selling price", but when you examine the fine print, you see the "selling price" is AFTER the customer has put a couple thousand down.

I have seen a Hyundai dealer do this. BTW, this Hyundai dealer also owns a Dodge dealership and a Mazda dealership but, he does not use the same trick in the advertisements for those.

Why that is I have no idea.
  • claywaterfillclaywaterfill Member Posts: 534
I guess the owner of those dealerships feels the average Hyundai shopper is looking for an extra low price. Maybe he feels the average Dodge or Mazda shopper is too "smart" to be fooled by this deceptive advertising stunt. I'm not saying this is the case--please don't bombard me with responses--I'm wondering if the owner of these dealerships feels this way?

If there are any Accent sedan owners in this thread, there is a new thread for the Accent sedan in the sedan board.

See my post #1597 in the Sonata board for the latest on the labor strife at Hyundai Motors. This might affect the availability of Accents.

How happy are you with these tires? Have they performed well? Worn well?
  • aldagaldag Member Posts: 81
I have just over 21,000 miles on my 2000 Accent. I just rotated the tires and the ones on the front (which were previously on the back) are like new. I anticipate perhaps 40,000 miles to these tires, barring road hazards. I think this is excellent wear characteristics for tires that come with an economy car. The one disadvantage I have noted here previously is a notable loss of grip on wet surfaces. This may have something to do with the weight of the car. I won't be able to compare until I eventually replace the tires, that might take a while. Keeping the tires fully inflated seems to improve the grip.
