Hi, What did you end up going with, the Legacy or Sonata? I am in the same boat, can't make my mind up on which one to go with.

I love the shape / style of the Sonata but it doesn't have a great selection if you want a manual transmission and it's isn't AWD.

So do I go for the style / engine on the Sonata or AWD/manual with better trim on the Legacy?

    All input welcome.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
You can't drive "style". In fact, when you're driving you won't even be able to see the exterior of the car. But you will notice the shifter and drivetrain every time you drive.

Should be a pretty easy decision, unless you just like looking at your cars and not driving them.

I am waiting for my 2011 Sonata SE in red with black interior. Only options are Homelink, wheel locks,Cargo net and Ipod cable. I'm trading in my 2006 Sonata LX. I will miss climate control and leather but I'm told the 4 is as good as my 6. I sure hope so.
Also I have remote start in my 2006 and I can't get it in the 2011 SE.
    Any supporting comments.

I like almost everything about it except for the stupid spring pollen in Atlanta ruining my wash jobs. I enjoy people thinking it is a Lexus.

I find it very zippy for a large car. Can't compare to a V6 since I haven't driven one in years. I am more consumed with maximizing mpg.

I paid $25,750 through an Internet quote from Ed Voyles in Atlanta. Their online inventory indicated they have another in stock as of yesterday.

I can make all the voice command dials I need to, usually to wife or office. I can see the names on my touchscreen when they call me.

The 4 won't be as quick, smooth, or quiet on acceleration as your V6. If you will miss climate control and leather, why not get the Limited, or better yet wait until the turbo Limited is available later this year? That will be more comparable in performance to your V6.

    Excellent feedback, Thanks backy.

I have driven the Legacy manual, will try the Sonata manual during the week before I pull the trigger.

I do not want a moonroof and the limited only comes that way.
  • denp3denp3 Member Posts: 99
I also went from an 2006 LX V6 to the Limited.
    So far seems powerful enough.
Picked it up on 4-7-2010, so not many miles yet.
Time will tell. I was also concerned, but hopefully will be satisfied.

You don't have to use it. Just close the shade and you won't even know it's there.
  • denp3denp3 Member Posts: 99
I tried it with and without the parking brake.
    On without brake
    Off with brake

I'm interested to see if the paint process that Hyundai brags about on their commercials is better than their past paint jobs.
Paint has been a weak point in Hyundai quality. I just got done waxing a bunch of pits on my 2004. The pits showed up a couple yrs after purchase.

Also, why does Hyundai charge $200 more for white paint? I guess other makers do this but I wasn't sure why? Other than a way to make more money from people that like to get all the extras or something special. Is that it?
  • awahooawahoo Member Posts: 15
I have asked this question previously, but never received an answer. I know that when the Automatic Climate Control is set on "auto" the compressor is always on. What if you hit the "off" button and the "A/C" light is not on...is the compressor still on? The reason I ask is, that when I do this, the air coming from the vents still seems very cool, even though the outside temp. is 70-80 degrees.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Hyundai does not charge $200 for white paint. They charge extra for pearl white. Much different than plain white.

FWIW, the paint on my 2004 Elantra GT is still in good shape, although the car has been parked outside most of the past two years. There's some fine scratches (which I think a clay bar would remove, if I wanted to bother) and some small scratches I've touched up over the years, from parking lot wars. But still glossy like new. I wax it 2-3 times a year, and the automatic car wash I use in winter adds some wax but I don't know if that helps much.
  • gary045gary045 Member Posts: 81
I forgot to mention that the biggest eye sore is the paint peeling off the front and rear bumpers.
The paint peels off the bumpers like a bad sunburn and looks like crap very soon after purchase..
I hope the new paint process has changed things...

PS. what is the difference of "pearl white" and white?
  • syitalian25syitalian25 Member Posts: 303
I will use this all the time - thanks for the tip.
  • syitalian25syitalian25 Member Posts: 303
If you look in the Auto section of walmart they sell this thing called like the Original California Duster - it's a big shammy brush for the exterior of the car. Works great for getting pollen and light dirt off in between washes.

We discussed this a few days ago. See 2031 and replies.
  • pianotupianotu Member Posts: 10
The funny thing is, the word "Pearl" is also used in Pacific Blue PEARL, Indigo Blue PEARL, Camel PERAL, and Black Plum PEARL. I wonder does that mean it's the same type of "Pearl" paint of different colors, yet at no extra cost except for the White?

I'm not really expecting answers (I think I will eventually go with a Black Metallic) but it certainly is confusing...

I'm fairly certain the clutch in the compressor disengages when you turn climate control off. Because of the physics of how an A/C system works, the cooling element is going to stay cold for a while until the heat from the incoming air warms it back up to the same temperature as everything else; when it gets really hot outside you'll notice the difference more quickly. It'll still be cool air for a few seconds, but then it'll get warm.

Bought a new Sonata Saturday. Long process. By the time the car was prepped & ready to inspect, the service dept was closed. A problem before we even moved the car. The front passenger door won't open from the outside. This is not the door handle problem I've read about. That was a problem with the inside handle. Dropped it off this morning at the dealer. I'll post later what they find out.

Anybody have or hear of similar problem?

I thought perhaps that the extra charge for the White Pearl Paint was going to be for a luxurious metallic tinted custom paint feature. Look at it! Its not an expensive 0ff-white creame coloured paint like an Audi or another expensive import, its just a plain- jane White, period! Its looks like the industrial white-wash paint Ford has used for decades on its Trucks and Vehicles. Ok, for a house or fence but not on a car, sorry! I searched several dealerships to find a Pearl White Sonata to see with my own eyes what this upgrade was all about. You`d think they would have charged extra for the red paint since that is the most expensive automobile finish.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
I don't think you actually saw the pearl white paint, if you think it's plain-Jane white. The SE I saw with pearl white was not plain-Jane, whitewash white, but had depth and color to it. Are you absolutely sure you saw the pearl white paint, and not regular white?

It's worse than I thought. Both dealers here (ABQ) are owned by Larry H Miller, and they both are adding $2999 to the MSRP. Actually, they added $3999 to one of the Limited models putting over $32K. And, (get this) they cover over the consumer disclosure at the bottom of the add-on window sticker, you know, the one that says "this is an add-on price and is not from the manufacturer" or something like that. I guess a lot of people are falling for it. While I was there I accidently overheard the conversion of someone buying one and they were paying full MSRP plus the $2999. I guess these guys are depending on enough buyers being stupid, and it's working.
  • phill1phill1 Member Posts: 319
Am I mistaken or not? I thought that the 2011 Sonata was only available in one (1) color of White? I don`t care if the White Pearl is on the GLS, LE or SE, Pearl White IMO is identical to the "Oxford White" Ford has sprayed on its F150 and Focus Wagons alike for the past decade! To charge a premium upgrade for a generic White color selection is silly. Is there a metallic essence or special clear coat tint that misses the untrained naked eye?
  • dash5dash5 Member Posts: 421
According to the Hyundai site and Edmunds it's only available in one type of White:

    http://www.edmunds.com/new/2011/hyundai/sonata/101216524/colors.html

phill i'm not sure why they upcharge but I think I've seen that for white before in other cars, although I cant remember which make/model it was. The 200 bucks seems to be stressing you out though, pick a different color! ;)

That or tell the dealer you're not paying 200 bucks more for white just for peace of mind.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
I don't know what you saw or thought you saw, but when I saw the 2011 SE with pearl white there was a definite, unmistakable metallic character and depth to the paint, not at all like a plain white. Are you sure you didn't see 2010 Sonatas in the plain white? I think it would be very hard not to tell the difference between a plain white and the pearl white.
  • hmma007hmma007 Member Posts: 19
Phil, I'm not sure what paint you're looking at but I can assure you that the white on a 2011 Hyundai Sonata has flakes of mica in it that gives it depth and "sparkle." It's not cream-colored unless it's an effect of the dealer's lighting, perhaps the white isn't the color for you. We have a interesting finish we call "Shadow White" that is icy blue and color shifts at different viewing angles.
  • phill1phill1 Member Posts: 319
Nope, its not the $200. that bothers me at all. I just ordered a 2011 Ford Fiesta SE 5 door Hatchback in Candy Red Metallic and gladly paid the extra $180. paint upgrade! I`m replacing a 2006 Kia Rio5 hatchback. Funny, no extra charge for the Candy Red Metallic color in Canada according to the Ford CA website. Guess thats just included in the inflated price of the vehicle in Canada. I DO like White, but obviously I need to have my eyes examined. I don`t seen the sparkle "mica" or metallic that your describing in the Pearl White. Think Im going to wait till the 2012 model gets released with perhaps some new and more exciting colors to choose from! My old 2006 Sonata w-moonroof (light-silver) looks dated now but with only 33K miles on it, it still runs strong and tight!

What options does it have and approx price with no trade.
  • hmma007hmma007 Member Posts: 19
:confuse: Are you looking at one indoors under florourescent lamps or outdoors under natural lighting? Under flouro lamps the white appears a bit flat, under outdoor lighting the mica is a lot easier to see. :confuse: I wish I could be a bit more helpful, the white is very nice if you can see the mica/metallic in it.

Just got word today (4/12) that my car was shipped from Alabama by rail on Friday (4/9 ). Should be at the dealer by Saturday ( 4/17 ). My deal is 12% of MSRP and $5400 trade for my 05 Elantra in fair conduction.

I am looking to lease a 2011 SE with navigation before the end of April and have been quoted $279/mo with $2k down, for 36 months, by a local Atlanta dealership.

Does anyone know if that's a good deal? I was previously quoted $375 with $400 down by a different dealer. Needless to say I passed on that.

Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!

I bought a Pearl White because I have never seen this beatiful white. Obviously Hyundai has used this white a while, but this white looks really beautiful on 2011 Sonata. I DO see the sparkle "mica" in my Pearl White.

My red SE is awaiting my pickup tomorrow. I bought it from Huntington Hyundai. They gave me the best deal with a trade in of my 2006 Sonata. I got Homelink,Ipod cable, wheel locks, and full carpeted floor mats. With Huntington every other oil change is free. They have been doing that for us since 2002. My salesman is Bobby Awn. He's great to deal with.

How many miles was on your 06 Sonata and how much did they give you on trade.
  • schdyschdy Member Posts: 233
I had 13K miles and I got $10.5k plus the tax difference. Comes to approx $11,400
  • schdyschdy Member Posts: 233
Does the new Sonata have Quartz Lights. I guess I'll find out tomorrow.
  • tuckerdogtuckerdog Member Posts: 29
The outside handle on my new Sonata has been fixed. They tell me the car was a swap from another dealer out of state. Said the other dealer did the fix on the original door handle problem. But when doing so, messed something up with the outer door handle. So no big deal.

My car is white & I can see sparkley bits in the paint, in the garage under the light of a plain old lightbulb or outside in the sun.

I brought up the website of SouthWEST Hyundai on the southEAST corner of Lomas & Wyoming....here's the link:
    http://www.southwesthyundai.com/new-inventory/index.htm?SByear=2011&SBmake=clear- &SBmodel=clear&SBbodystyle=clear

And, I'm finding the prices to be relatively normal as far as MSRP goes. You should only deal via email with the internet/fleet manager. Let him know you are going to be shopping around the southwest, including neighboring states, looking for the best price, and you'd like to know what his best offer is. Then, email dealers in Tucson, Phoenix, Denver, Durango, wherever within a day's drive.
Make em' battle, and then throw the best price back at Larry H Miller and wait for them to match or beat the price.
    Good luck.

I never saw a cargo net as an optional goodie. One was never offered verbally. I do have a generic net I can use, but can't locate any hooks in the trunk to attach it to ( other than two that are on the floor of the truck ). Where are you folks attaching the top of the net?

    Thanks,

I'm not really expecting answers (I think I will eventually go with a Black Metallic) but it certainly is confusing...

All you have to do is go to an auto store and price a quart of quality pearl white paint. The price is absolutely shocking.

I don't think this is the forum for a dealer salesperson to try to sell cars!!!
  • schdyschdy Member Posts: 233
I received my new red SE today and I'm getting a lot of passerbys stopping to ask what make is my car. I'm still reading the manual. Bluetooth connected easily. Much to my surprise I see they ommited the ash tray and cigarette lighter. I don't smoke so no problem. I do miss the lighter socket in the trunk of my 2006 Sonata as I would keep my battery operated cooler plugged in along side my golf GPS.
Ordered the mud guards from Shark as the Dealer has no info on when available.

    Hey Guys,
I just bought the Hyundai Ipod cable from my dealer and he stated that the engine should be running when you plug in the cable to the vehicle and the ipod should be off when making that connection. Others have said that the vehicle should be off when you plug in the cable....???
Any idea what the method is actually?

    Thanks

    Hello,

It's my first time buying a car and below is pricing I got from 2011 Sonata limited from one of my local dealers via email.
    ================================================
    2011 Sonata Limited
    26200 MSRP
    24840 Sale Price
    -2000 Down Payment
    +2178 O.C. Sales Tax
    +437 DMVs
    27455 Total Amount Financed
    2.9% for 36 months = 797
    2.9% for 48 months = 606
    2.9% for 60 months = 492
    ==============================================
What do you experts think of this price?
I am going to try to lower the sale price as low as I can, but I just want to know how much to expect. I am also planning on contacting more dealers.

    Thanks in advance.
  • spyderonespyderone Member Posts: 54
Based on the numbers you posted you should have financed $25455 if they gave you credit for the $2000.
  • syitalian25syitalian25 Member Posts: 303
I leave the cable plugged in but disconnect the iPod/turn the car on and off all the time with no problems. I wouldn't worry about it too much.
  • denp3denp3 Member Posts: 99
Mine came in with the cargo mat and net option.
It was a car that came into my dealer that way.
Didn't have the wheel locks like some.

I got $9350 for my 06 LX with 36000 miles on it.

    Hello:

My wife owns a 2008 Sante Fe which has a gauge for each individual tire tracking pressure. I like this feature but I believe in the 2010, it only tells you a tire is low on pressure and not which specific one.

Cany anyone tell me if the new sonata has a similar way of tracking like the Santa Fe?
